Kansas State University is a remarkable
place offering a unique opportunity to
become culturally competent through our
American ethnic studies department.
This is the only department of its kind in Kansas.
Even just taking the intro class
it will change like immediately, you
cannot sit in that class and not take
something very like powerful from it.
Once I leave the door I start realizing how
the things that we've talked about
relate to everything- everything in the world.
It allows you to have better
relationships with different communities
that you're not a part of and be
open-minded to these differences and
celebrate these differences.
American ethnic studies allows you to see people
for who they are and for what they
experience that should help you better
navigate how you treat people
Understanding race and ethnicity has
become central to living, working and
even functioning effectively in this
multicultural world.
Ethnic studies taught me to understand America's major
ethnic groups, African Americans, Asian
Americans, Native Americans , Mexican
Americans, Latinos and these groups are
already the majority in many states.
What we teach is innovative and
interdisciplinary. We combine and draw
from the social sciences and the
humanities. This interdisciplinary
approach to race and ethnicity is part
of what makes our graduates so
interesting and necessary to employers.
It kind of helped me feel to want to go
to law school. Going through American
ethnic studies especially learning about
more about how black people are treated
in this country and especially in the
child welfare system and because I am a
black woman, it felt like I really
needed to be in that profession to not
only be an example but to also give an
experience that many other people that I
will be working with don't really have.
Ethnic studies knowledge is
interdisciplinary combining sociology
history and culture.
With an ethnic studies major or minor you have a true
competitive edge on the job market
employers from many lines of work favor
American ethnic studies graduates.
They did look at my resume and they saw that
I had American ethnic studies on there
and so it started whole conversation.
So they were very very happy that I had
that background.
Ethnic studies created the foundation and gave me the knowledge
to understand why those things happened
through history and theory and law.
American ethnic studies has changed the
way that I view the world.
My degree has given me the tools necessary to engage
the world in a new way.
You cannot function in today's multicultural
society without American ethnic studies knnowledge.
