AND THE DAMAGE AS THE MAYOR
MENTIONED IS WIDESPREAD.
J.D.
MILES JOINS US LIVE FROM THE
FIRST COMMAND RESPONSE CENTER.
WHAT IS HAPPENING THIS MORNING?
Reporter: HERE AT THE TXDOT
OFFICE SOUTH OF I-20 IN CANTON,
THIS IS WHERE DOZENS OF PEOPLE
IN VEHICLES ARE CONSTANTLY BEING
DEPLOYED TO THE TORNADO RAVAGED
AREA.
WE'VE GOT DALLAS FIRE RESCUE,
THIS IS THE SEARCH AND RESCUE
VEHICLE.
15 FIREFIGHTERS TO HELP OUT
WITH THE CAUSE.
I'M ALSO TOLD THERE WAS A
CONTINGENT OF FIREFIGHTERS TO
HELP WITH THE SEARCH AND RELIEF
X -- EFFORTS.
BEHIND MY SHOULDER IS THE
COMMAND CENTER.
THERE ARE MORE RESOURCES ARE
GATHERING FOR WHAT WILL BE A
VERY LONG DAY.
THERE ARE SEVERAL DAMAGED AREAS
AS CANTON'S MAYOR JUST TOLD YOU
ON THE PHONE AROUND VAN ZANDT
COUNTY AND HENDERSON COUNTY.
SOME OF THE WORST ARE WHERE A
CAR DEALERSHIP FACILITY WERE
WIPED OUT.
MANGLED CARS AND TRUCKS, DEBRIS
FROM THE STORAGE FACILITY SHOW
THE POWER OF THIS TORNADO.
THIS IS AN AREA WHERE TWO OF
THE FIVE FATALITIES TOOK PLACE,
A MOTORIST ON I-20 AND ANOTHER
PERSON'S BODY FOUND NEARBY.
WE ARE WAITING ON THE IDS FROM
THE DEAD.
MORE THAN 50 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN
TREATED AT AREA HOSPITALS.
NOW THAT IT IS DAYLIGHT, SEARCH
AND RESCUE CREWS ARE HEADING
OUT TO LOOK FOR ANYONE WHO MAY
BE TRAPPED OR INJURED TO SEEK
HELP.
THE TORNADO PLOWED THROUGH THE
AREA AS LONG AS 35 MILES LONG.
THE GOVERNOR WE HAVE HEARD HAS
ACTIVATED TEXAS 2 TASK FORCE,
AN URBAN SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM
THAT WILL CANVASS THE AREAS.
THERE ARE MAJOR POWER OUTAGES
THROUGHOUT VAN ZANDT COUNTY.
WATER IS OUT BECAUSE THE POWER
IS OUT AND THERE WAS DAMAGE TO
WATER TOWERS.
CITY AND COUNTY LEADERS ARE
URGING PEOPLE TO STAY AWAY,
AREAS UNDER SECURITY WATCH HAS
BEEN DAMAGED.
THEY ARE ALSO TELLING PEOPLE TO
STAY AWAY FROM THE HUGELY
POPULAR CANTON TRADE DAYS,
WHICH HAPPENED TO FALL ON THIS
WEEKEND.
EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NOT HIT BY
THE TORNADO, THEY ARE TELLING
PEOPLE TO STAY AWAY BECAUSE
THEY NEED AS MUCH RESOURCES AS
THEY CAN TO GET THROUGH THE
TORNADO RAVAGED AREAS.
MORE ON THE DAMAGE COMING UP
THROUGHOUT THE HOUR LIVE IN
CANTON.
J.D.
MILES, CBS11 NEWS.
THE RED CROSS IS ALSO ON THE
GROUND HELPING SURVIVORS AND
FIRST RESPONDERS.
JOINING US ON THE PHONE NOW IS
TAMMY PRATER.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SERVING EAST
TEXAS.
GOOD MORNING.
GOOD MORNING.
CAN YOU TELL US FIRST, WHERE
CAN PEOPLE GO FOR HELP THIS
MORNING?
FIRST OF ALL, WE HAVE TWO
SHELTERS OPEN.
THE FIRST SHELTER IS IN CANTON.
THAT IS LOCATED AT THE FIRST
METHODIST CHURCH AT 600 SOUTH
BUFFALO STREET IN CANTON.
WE ALSO HAVE A SHELTER OPEN IN
EMORY AT 329 NORTH TEXAS STREET
IN THE EMORY CIVIC CENTER.
THAT IS FIRST AND FOREMOST THE
FIRST PLACE THAT PEOPLE CAN GO.
ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE NEEDING
A PLACE TO STAY THAT HAS DAMAGE
TO THEIR HOMES.
WE WANT TO TAKE CARE OF FAMILY.
WE KNOW THAT MANY PEOPLE
LOST EVERYTHING LAST NIGHT.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GREATEST
MEANS THAT YOU ARE SEEING RIGHT
NOW?
IN THE DAYS TO COME, WE WILL
HAVE A BETTER FEEL FOR EXACT
WHAT IS NEEDED.
OUR GOAL RIGHT NOW IS JUST TO
MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE
IMPACTED HAS A SAFE PLACE TO
COME IN.
IT IS STILL RAINING IN EAST
TEXAS.
WE WANT FAMILIES TO COME IN AND
HAVE A PLACE WHERE IT IS WARM
AND SAFE AND THEY CAN HAVE A
HOT MEAL AND BE TAKEN CARE OF.
WE WILL HAVE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT,
MENTAL HEALTH CARE BUT
BASICALLY, WE WANT FOLKS TO BE
COMING IN FOR THAT IN THE DAYS
TO COME.
WE WILL BE OUT HITTING THE
STREETS, DISTRIBUTION AND
RECEIVING, AS PEOPLE BEGIN
CLEANING UP AND DIGGING THROUGH
THINGS.
AS WE MOVE ALONG, WE WILL HAVE
A BETTER FEEL FOR THINGS.
RIGHT NOW, WE DON'T REALLY EVEN
KNOW JUST EXACTLY HOW MANY
FAMILIES ARE IMPACTED.
OUR VERY FIRST THING WILL BE TO
START WORKING WITH LOCAL
OFFICIALS WITH DAMAGE
ASSESSMENT.
SO YOU KNOW, IT IS HARD TO SAY
WHAT THE NEEDS ARE RIGHT NOW.
AND, YOU KNOW, WHICH OF THOSE
LIKE WATER AND SO FORTH WILL BE
TEMPORARY AND WHICH WILL BE
MORE LONG-TERM.
BUT, WE WILL BE WORKING WITH
LOCAL OFFICIALS TO SEE WHAT
THOSE NEEDS ARE SO WE CAN MEET
THEM.
A LOT OF NORTH TEXANS ARE
GOING TO WANT TO STEP UP AND
GIVE RIGHT NOW.
IS THERE ANYWAY PEOPLE CAN HELP
IMMEDIATELY?
ABSOLUTELY.
THEY CAN GO TO REDCROSS.ORG AND
MAKE A DONATION.
THAT IS THE QUICKEST WAY TO
HELP.
WE ARE ALREADY ON THE GROUND
FEEDING IN OUR SHELTER AND
TAKING CARE OF FOLKS.
SO THAT IS ALWAYS THE QUICKEST
AND BEST WAY TO HELP.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING
US THIS MORNING.
GOOD LUCK OUT THERE AS YOU WORK.
TO REITERATE THE INFORMATION,
SHE SAID ONE OF THE SHELTERS IS
OPEN AT FIRST METHODIST CHURCH
LIFE CENTER, 600 SOUTH BUFFALO
