Gowdy picked by GOP steering committee to chair House Oversight panel.

The Republican Steering Committee on Thursday backed Rep. Trey Gowdy to become the next

chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

The move — if confirmed by the full Republican Conference — would put the South Carolina

Republican at the helm of a contentious probe into President Donald Trump's decision to

fire FBI Director James Comey.

Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, is known for chairing the House Benghazi investigation

and has also been a leading member of the Intelligence Committee's probe of Moscow's

interference in the 2016 election.

Gowdy would replace outgoing Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), who will

resign at the end of June.

Rep. Steve Russell (R-Okla.) had also put his name in for consideration to replace Chaffetz.

House GOP leaders encouraged Gowdy to run upon learning of Chaffetz's looming departure.

He is a close ally of Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)

on a panel composed of unpredictable Freedom Caucus conservatives with rocky relationships

with leadership.

"Trey Gowdy possesses the experience and deep commitment to transparency and accountability

necessary to be the House's next Oversight chairman," Ryan said in a statement.

"He has proven that he will always look out for taxpayers and seek answers from the bureaucracy."

Gowdy has also clashed with Trump, although he later served on Trump's transition team.

Trump once retweeted someone calling Rep. Trey Gowdy a "Benghazi loser" after Gowdy

backed Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) in the GOP presidential primary.

Trump also accused Gowdy of being soft on Hillary Clinton over her use of an unauthorized

email server.

It is unclear in wha direction Gowdy will take his panel's part of the Trump-Comey

investigation, which has quickly become one of the most contentious political scandals

in modern American history.

While the House and Senate intelligence committees have jurisdiction over Russia's meddling

in the U.S. election, questions of obstruction and how Trump might have tried to influence

the probe fall more into Oversight's purview, at least in the House.

Democrats worry that Gowdy will use the gavel to protect the White House or focus the investigation

solely on leaks to the media that make Trump look bad.

Democrats' distrust of Gowdy stretches back to his work on the Benghazi probe, which they

believe was a witch hunt against Hillary Clinton.

Republicans praise Gowdy as a top-notch independent investigator, and at least one White House

aide has worried that he could become a thorn in Trump's side.

POLITICO reported that Gowdy has made a conscious effort to shield himself from an appearance

of being too closely tied to the White House: When the Trump-supporting Great America PAC

donated $5,000 into Gowdy's campaign account in March, he returned the donation.

My story is about how I chased down a Muslim man to pray for him.

We just got back from our outreach to Greece.

My team and I were helping with a local ministry and their church service.

This Muslim guy came in. I'm guessing he was 19 or 20.

He was really highlighted to me when he first came in.

So we were doing the church service and all that, and at the end I walk into the foyer area.

And he's sitting there talking to members of my team, and I wanted to talk to him, but then

He was just like, "Okay I have to go."

So I turned to someone on my team and was like, "I really feel like I was supposed to pray for him."

And they're like, "Go after him!"

And so I call over another guy from our team

because it's not culturally acceptable for a girl to approach a guy.

I was like, "Hey come with me!" So we chased down this Muslim guy.

We ran across the street when we weren't supposed to and didn't follow the traffic signs.

But we did it anyway. So we ran across the street and I said,

Hi, I'm so sorry I didn't get to meet you. And he said, "Hi my name is Joe."

And the Holy Spirit just told me that his name was actually Joseph.

And so I said, "Hey, is your name in English Joseph?" And he said, "Yes."

So the Lord started to tell me words of knowledge for this guy.

So I asked if he knew the story of Joseph, and he said, "Yes." And I was like, "Okay so

you know that his brothers betrayed him,

beat him up, and threw him in a pit.

And he said, "Yes." And I said, "Well I feel like that's the same thing that happened in your life.

That there's people that you trusted who betrayed you and who've thrown you into a pit.

But God wants you to know that He sees you in that pit in that pit,

and He's not going to leave you because He's good enough to be with you

even in your darkest hour."

And tears started to come to his eyes.

And then I said, "And also I feel like, just in the story of Joseph,

when he was sold into slavery people came and made him do things that he didn't want to do.

You're here, and your doing things you don't want to do.

But God's telling you that He's going to restore everything back to you.

Every bad thing that's ever happened to you and your family, God's gonna restore you.

And it's not because you're doing anything for Him, it's just because He loves you.

And so I asked him if I could pray for him, and he said, "Yes."

In Muslim culture this is how you pray, and so I put my hands like this and began to pray with him.

And I just prayed a blessing over him and his family, that the Lord would watch over them

and keep them safe. And that He would provide for every need that they had.

And that it would be a sign of God's faithfulness to them.

And so after the prayer was over he was like,

"I can't believe you prayed for me out here. We didn't go into a building or anything."

And I said, "Of course not, God is everywhere and He hears you no matter where you are."

And I said, "I really do feel like God is going to bless you and your family."

And he said, "Wow, I'm just so glad that you came and chased after me."

And I said, "Well God loves you enough to have a complete stranger chase you down to let you know that He loves you."

And he's like, "Okay well I'm late for work." And I said, "Okay bye!"

And it was just a moment where God was really talking to me about how

He actually wants to engage with the nations.

That it doesn't matter whether your Muslim, or Buddhist, or atheist, or the darkest pit of Satanism.

God says that He loves you and He's after you.

It was just so much of a testament that God's like

you have the ability to chase down Muslims and love them because I love them.

- Hi there.

One thing I've been looking forward to is the opportunity

to test out this traditional tie machete

that you may have seen in our recent video

how blacksmiths make machetes quenched in oil.

Really nice piece of work.

Our rotisserie mount system has multiple hang points on it

as you can see there's one, two, three branches off that.

So if the fire gets too hot,

we can just raise the beef up

above the flames.

Big chunk of tenderloin beef.

Maybe move some of woods will you?

I think the fire's getting too big.

- It's enough, it's enough like that.

- It's good?

I think another way of stopping the meat from burning

is to just continuously turn it

if the fire does get a little bit too big.

one thing slightly different about this camp site,

I wanted to show you is

you may know that we normally like to camp

close to a running creek and this guys,

we're actually just camping next to this tepid pool.

So that water is definitely not drinkable

in the state that it's in.

It's also quite dirty,

as obviously there's a lot of organisms living in there.

I just wanted to show you over here

our new water preparation system

that we started using and that we're still testing.

This is the MSR Guardian.

So expect to see this coming out

in a few of our videos.

So what we do is I fill the orange bucket

with water from the tepid pool

and then I let it sit for about 20 minutes

and then it's safe to start purifying

and pumping that water through the system.

So over here inside my MSR dromedary we have,

that right there is water that's been purified from the pool

we've used quite a thin stick for this rotisserie

and what's happened is the beef

is not really grabbing a hold of the wood.

So we decided to turn it with a knife at the moment.

As you turn the stick, the meat kinda slips around it.

Ideally that stick would be probably 50% thicker.

So about half an inch.

So it's only about probably a third of an inch.

Whoo, the fire's nice and hot.

Probably dropped to about minus one degrees tonight,

but next to this fire, we'll be warm and toasty.

And there's that purified water.

Crystal clear.

Straight out of the dromedary.

Well campers, that beef will be ready soon

and sunset is coming very early tonight,

that's because winter's coming.

Tomorrow morning we're gonna move the camping site.

And we look forward to showing you the next destination.

Because winter's about to come,

there's no risk of a fire spreading into the bush.

We often see this

That fire could've been smoldering for a month.

See the smoke just gently coming out of there,

which I wanted to show you.

So obviously,

part of the back burning campaign.

And this is what the government

will only do their back burning

in certain times of the year.

So you definitely can't do this is the summer.

Just another reminder of why

you should always extinguish your fire before vacating.

So that hole down there,

that's where the fire's coming from.

Burning deep underground, possibly for weeks and weeks.

So today we've hiked about 15 kilometers

and there is what I wanted to show you today.

That is dinner time on the second night.

So that's just the left over beef

from last night being re-cooked.

Because that big beef rice we cooked was

1.5 kilos last night,

so that's enough for two nights.

You don't need to refrigerate food out here,

it's quite cold, there's a bit of vinegar going in.

Similar recipe to pork adobo.

That's beef with onion, potato, carrot,

vinegar and soy sauce being one of the main ingredients.

Ideally this campfire would be

a little bit higher off the ground.

As you can see.

Back out on the trail, it's a few weeks later.

Just wanted to take this opportunity to show you

another campfire system that is,

we didn't have any rocks.

So we just have the fire straight on the ground.

It's a bit wet around here.

I got the wood drawing rack on top,

so the fire was burning last night.

And in the future, I think I'll only use

the half fire rocks circle system

that you've seen in our other videos.

Because it's much better smoke control.

So we had a couple of sticks 'cause we cooked beef again.

Different levels, and for our rotisserie burning here,

there's the higher one and the lower one.

Because we're losing so much heat

we had to have the rotisserie very low in the end.

Quick look around,

there's a tripod to hang all the gear on.

It's a system we always like to use.

There's a nice piece of flat ground where we had our tent

directly on the trail.
