Top 10 Myths About

Guns

10.

Suppressors (aka Silencers)

This myth regularly shows up on lists of lies Hollywood tells about guns (right next to

"if you run out of ammunition, throw away your gun").

Suppressors, sometimes called silencers, are designed to reduce the speed and sound of

the gas that propels the bullet out of the barrel of the gun.

The way a cartridge works is that a pin, or striker, in the gun hits a primer (usually

on the round,) which ignites powder and sends the bullet projectile out of the barrel.

By slowing the escaping gas, you can reduce the amount of sound produced.

It can also work by reducing the speed of the bullet, reducing the sonic boom or crack.

Again, you can reduce the sound, but not eliminate it.

On most rounds, you can get a 30-40 decibel reduction.

In quieter rounds, like the popular small-game .22 caliber, this means a pretty significant

reduction in volume from around 140 db to the 110-120 db range.

But still, that's a very loud sound, and repeated exposure can result in hearing loss.

You should always have hearing protection when using firearms.

9.

Semi-Automatic Firearms

When I say "semi-automatic", many people have an image in their head of a man on a

rooftop with an M16, pulling the trigger and firing off thousands of rounds (again, thanks

to Hollywood).

This is a false image.

In a semi-automatic firearm, whether it's a pistol (like the Glock 17), rifle (including

the controversial AR-15), or shotgun, when the round is fired, the expanding gas from

the cartridge launches the projectile and then opens the chamber, ejecting the spent

cartridge and, if available, using a spring system to slide the next cartridge into place

ready for the next trigger pull.

The gun will not fire the next round for you, and most guns are designed to prevent this

from happening.

This works out to one trigger pull per shot, similar to how you have to pull a trigger

in a revolver to fire the next round.

Fully automatic weapons, that fire multiple rounds with one trigger pull, do exist, but

they are mostly illegal for citizens to own in the United States (you have to go through

some serious federal licensing headaches).

8.

Assault Weapons

There's a lot of debate over the use of "assault" weapons, but sadly, there's

not a lot of actual information.

So let's sort through what we actually have.

Many gun rights advocates argue that there is no real definition of an assault weapon,

and they would be incorrect.

The term "assault weapon" was legally defined in the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban as

a semi-automatic firearm with a detachable magazine, that contains characteristics one

would find on military firearms.

Simply put, it's a civilian version of a military weapon.

Gun control advocates argue that assault weapons are much more dangerous than the average hunting

rifle.

And they are equally wrong.

The vast majority of add-ons that turn a hunting rifle into an assault rifle are mostly cosmetic:

pistol grips, folding stocks, flash suppressors – things that the shooter may appreciate,

but have no real bearing on the function of the gun or on its ability to fire rounds.

These are semi-automatic weapons: one trigger pull per shot, just like a revolver or your

granddad's hunting rifle.

7.

Stand Your Ground

In the US, while you do have a right to defend your life with deadly force, there are two

basic theories on how to apply that deadly force in self-defense: duty to retreat, and

stand your ground.

A few states in the US use a legal standard called "duty to retreat," which basically

says that, while you have the right to defend your life with deadly force, you need to make

every possible, reasonable effort to get away from your attacker before using that deadly

force.

While this sounds nice in theory, in practice it means that a person who has to use deadly

force to defend their lives may have to appear in court and be tried as a potential murderer,

spending tens of thousands of dollars and potentially ending up in

prison for the rest of their life, all because someone else tried to kill them and they didn't

want to die.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have "stand your ground," or "castle doctrine".

Basically, this doctrine states that whatever space you're occupying at the moment, you

do not have to leave that space, in order to defend your life.

If someone is coming to kill you, you can pull your weapon and stop them with deadly

force.

Some states that have this law also protect those who've used it from criminal and civil

liability.

Again, it's great in theory, but not so much in practice.

There have been dozens of cases where judges and juries have grossly misinterpreted these

laws, acquitting people who chased down attackers out of revenge.

Between the extremes, you also have a patchwork of laws around the country that fall somewhere

in the middle.

Some states allow a citizen to only use the castle doctrine defense in their homes.

Other states say they don't really have a duty to retreat in law, do so in practice.

Gun laws are very complex and that's why it's very important to know what they are

before you purchase and use a firearm.

6.

Magic Bullets

Every so often, there's a new concern over a new type of "cop killer" bullet that

will magically defeat everything in its path.

The truth of the matter is this: there is no such thing as a magic bullet.

However, knowing how your bullet will behave when it reaches its target is crucial in deciding

what kind of bullet you need to choose.

Let's talk about hollow point bullets.

Hollow point bullets are designed to dissipate their energy into their target, reducing penetration

into the target, thus lessening – but not eliminating – the likelihood of coming out

the other side and harming someone else.

In contrast, a full metal jacket is designed to penetrate its target, and continue until

it slows to a stop.

That's why hollow points are usually recommended as a good personal defense round; it's more

likely, should you have to use it, to stay in the bad guy and not harm anyone else.

Over the years, design names and manufacturing tricks have given some a great deal of concern.

The key to remember is that, at the end of the day, there's not much you can do to

a bullet to make it more or less dangerous that hasn't already been done.

5.

Self-Harm

You may have heard that you're 43 times more likely to kill yourself or someone you

know than you are to kill a criminal with a gun.

This statistic is from a study done by Dr. Arthur Kellerman back in 1986, and is used

by gun control advocates to challenge the usefulness of owning firearms.

But is it a myth?

And the answer is: kinda.

The devil is very much in the details of the strongly criticized study.

Part of the problem is that Kellerman, in his study, only focused on gun deaths and

not gun use, ignoring incidents where guns protected, but did not take, life.

He was also criticized for failing to provide complete data, recognize contradictory studies,

and include suburban or rural areas in his studies.

However, common sense does dictate that people who own guns are more likely to use them than

people who don't, often in tragic ways.

Statistics show that more gun deaths occur via suicide than by homicide and accidental

shootings combined.

My personal advice is that if you do choose to own a weapon, please make sure that those

who you trust have a plan to remove your guns in case you show signs of suicidal behavior.

If you are having suicidal thoughts, please get help.

In the US, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Helpline at 1-800-273-8255.

4.

It's Easy to Buy a Gun

After tragic events, there's often a focus on how firearms are acquired by members of

the general public, usually focusing on strengthening requirements and restricting access to certain

types of weapons.

The result has been a series of laws that have been designed to keep guns out of the

wrong people's hands.

If you've never bought a gun, you may be surprised at all the hoops you have to jump

through to get one.

To start off with, many states have some sort of licensing or permitting process for guns

and gun owners, which can take weeks or months to complete.

Once you have your permit or license, you have to meet a fairly long set of federal

requirements (age, legal status, mental status,) in order to purchase a firearm.

Federal firearms license dealers are required, by law, to do an instant background check

on you, to make sure you're not on the FBI's long list of people who aren't allowed to

own a gun.

Only after you jump through all the hoops, are you allowed to walk out the door with

your gun.

Even private sales between people can be very complex.

There's also the part where you have to pay money for your gun.

Guns, in case you've never been shopping for one, tend to be expensive, and fluctuating

supply and demand can quickly drive prices up.

Even in the cheapest of times, guns are an expensive investment.

You can easily expect to spend $300-600 on a decent lower-cost handgun, rifle, or shotgun,

and it's very easy to spend more.

This doesn't include the cost of licensing, accessories, and ammunition.

Training classes and range time are also prudent investments that can cost big money.

If you go hunting, purchasing the right equipment is a big investment, as is the investment

of processing your harvested meat.

Used guns can save you some money (usually 20-30%) on your investments, but make sure

to have them checked out by a knowledgeable person before you buy them.

3.

You Need a Big Gun

"Why do you NEED an AR-15?"

It's a common enough question by those who favor gun control, and if your focus is personal

defense, a smaller weapon would probably suffice.

When we get down to simple practicality, a lot of people who look at guns get weapons

far more powerful than they actually need, and in doing so, can put others at risk.

If you live in an apartment complex with people on the other side of the typical apartment

paper-thin walls, while it may be cool to own a larger caliber handgun like a .45, you

take the risk that a missed shot (which you are legally liable for) will go through the

wall and injure someone other than the person coming after you.

A smaller caliber firearm with the proper bullets can defend your life without creating

a higher risk of injury.

The same concept exists for hunting.

A lot of deer hunters tend to favor large rounds like the .30-06 Springfield (called

the 30-aught-six) to take down their prize whitetail.

The problem with the .30-06 is that in areas where the distance between you and the target

is likely to be less than 100-150 yards, the 30-06 is overpowered.

A less powerful round, like the 7mm or 270, is plenty powerful to quickly take down a

deer and not do major damage to the carcass.

I've talked to some hunters who encourage people to hunt deer with a teeny little .22,

but I ignore them because a .22 is more likely to cause the animal needless suffering, than

to actually take it down.

The key here is to think of guns as tools, and you need to pick the right tool for the

right project.

If you wouldn't use a 30 pound sledgehammer to pound in a nail for a family portrait,

then you probably shouldn't use an overpowered gun to hunt squirrels.

Similarly, if you wouldn't use a tack hammer to try to break up concrete, you probably

shouldn't use an under-powered gun to take down a grizzly bear.

2.

Gun Control and Crime Rates

One of the biggest debates in the US is whether gun control actually reduces the rate of crime.

Gun control advocates point out that other countries with heavy gun control tend to have

lower murder rates, while gun control opponents point out that, where strict gun control has

been implemented in the US, violent crime has skyrocketed.

So what's the truth?

Well, if we look at the top 20 cities for murders per 100,000 residents, we find that

nine of them are in seven of the states with the strictest gun control laws in the country

(Newark, NJ; Baltimore, MD; Oakland, CA; Philadelphia, PA; Stockton, CA; Washington, DC; Chicago,

IL; Pittsburgh, PA; and Buffalo, NY).

However, 11 of them are in states that have fewer restrictions on guns, with the top three

most dangerous cities (New Orleans, LA; Detroit, MI; and St. Louis, MO) all in states that

have a lack of gun control.

So what can we draw from this?

Well, the first thing is that gun control doesn't actually work.

Even if Chicago isn't as violent as New Orleans, it's still a violent place to be,

where handguns were banned up until recently and yet, mysteriously, people were still murdered

with them.

Scientific studies have backed up this conclusion.

It's like the laws against illicit drugs: those drugs are illegal and yet, people who

shouldn't acquire them still do so.

The solution?

Well, there is a correlation between gun violence and another metric: socioeconomics.

To put it simply, the same cities you tend to see on the top of the murder list are the

same cities you see on the top of the poverty rate list.

So the question then becomes: what can be done to lift those poverty-stricken areas

out of poverty?

If you come up with a workable solution, let me know.

1.

The Second Amendment

Lots of international folks wonder why the US doesn't just ban all guns, and the reason

is found in our Constitution: the Second Amendment.

The problem is that most people don't really understand what the Second Amendment means,

and the result is a lot of arguing on both sides.

So I'm going to try to help clear things up.

First, let's look at the text: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security

of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Now, to today's folks, the second part of the Amendment is fairly clear, but that first

section gives us a lot of pause.

Gun control advocates argue that, since most states have replaced the militia with the

National Guard, then the right to keep and bear arms for the average citizen isn't

really covered here.

Therefore, gun ownership is a privilege, not a right, that should be revoked.

The problem: that's not what the Amendment says.

You have to consider the historical context.

The US was a country born of war, where the average citizen could grab his musket or Pennsylvania

long rifle, walk out the door, and join up with some other average citizens as a small

militia group.

They could be used to conduct small raids against the British and their militias, to

weaken the armies prior to everyone fighting in the big battles.

When the war was over, the standing army was heavily reduced, and militias would be called

up if needed.

In other words: the militia was, pretty much, the military of the country.

This leads us to two elements of interpretation.

First: since common men could be called into service to protect the country, they would

need to be armed, and so, the right to bear arms would have been needed for national security.

However, the other element is that, because these men had just fought a Revolution against

the British militia and government, the right to bear arms represented the right of the

citizens to protect themselves against a tyrannical government.

In order to keep the government in check, the right to bear arms was needed.

This second interpretation is backed up, heavily, by the recorded discussions on the amendment

by Patrick Henry, Noah Webster, George Mason, James Madison and, ultimately by the Supreme

Court in US v. Cruikshank and Presser v. Illinois.

In other words, because a person could be called up to militia, and because our government

could become a tyrannical dictatorship, the right of the people to arm themselves shall

not be infringed.

Where the real debate kicks in, is whether this right can be limited.

And the answer to that question is: yes.

Much like your first amendment rights don't cover slander or screaming "fire" in a

crowded theater, your second amendment rights can be limited within reason.

The Supreme Court has said, in US v. Miller, that the government does have the right to

restrict access to certain firearms – in that particular case, a sawed-off shotgun.

There's also been a few cases – including the recent District of Columbia vs. Heller

– that have determined the rights of the government to restrict firearms access to

felons and the mentally ill.

In other words: the Second Amendment protects your right to bear arms, but can be reasonably

limited for the purpose of public safety.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery Explained - Dr. Jordan P. Farkas, The Breslow Center, Paramus NJ - Duration: 1:36.

The following is a conversation with the highly acclaimed and widely published Dr. Jordan

P. Farkas of The Breslow Center for Plastic Surgery.

The conversation centers on male breast reduction, a procedure that is rapidly gaining in popularity.

Gynecomastia is a problem for a lot of men.

It encompasses having too much fullness of the upper chest.

This can be a result of the patient being very fit and over time the muscle that they

gained has now been substituted for fat, or that they are taking medication or actually

born with a significant amount of breast tissue.

There are different treatment modalities to be able to take care of both of these problems.

If you had a lot of weight gain and then lost the weight, the skin envelope may be deflated.

That would require an excision.

It can either be performed just below the nipple or at the undersurface of your chest.

The optimal goal of the operation is to maintain you having a flat, more masculine chest as

opposed to a more female chest, and having it be more voluptuous.

The gynecomastia procedure can either be with just the excision, or usually with liposuction

involved with the excisional procedure in order to really address what the problem is

or the excess breast tissue.

The operation is performed here at the Center with a board-certified anesthesiologist, and

the recovery is generally well tolerated for about two to three weeks.

We generally recommend that you wear a compression garment to really help with the post-operative

swelling and oedema that can happen with the liposuction.

If you desire complete honesty about your needs without any pressure, look no further

than The Breslow Center.

The Breslow Center – you'll love the way you look.

Love will always give love back #30

Part Two

I invite you to watch the first part of #30

For Truku women

the most important skill was

of the

weaving

Girls

age of about 14

more or less

am not sure they were forced or..

more like it was just a tradition

that

mother called for

a tattooist

to visit

a specialist, who

was professional in tattooing

a face!

Cause Taroko tribe

tattooed ladies faces

it was from up the temple here

goes down the face

around the lips

up to the other temple

really good loocking

reminds me of a snake skin

How did they tattoo?

They did it traditional way

similar to one of my tattoos

that i made while was in Sabah

made by 'hand poke'

their traditional way was same

just the hand poke was

wasnt just one needle

but collection of needles

line or few lines of

needles

tattoo lady placed them on a girls cheek

that needles collection

which stick out of wooden hammer

or something looking like it

and 1, 2, 3 poke, poke, poke

3 times each or something

not sure, i had 3x each poke

and when it bleed

and skin was broken

it was showered with..i am not sure what..

black powder

coal or

other black dust

Women and men

had full respect to elder generation

as an old person means

knowledge

and knows how to hunt, how to weave

to get the right animal etc

knows how to make tools

elderly knows things

in general

Habits, legends and stories

skills and background

from generation to generation

were passed in songs

old people sung to young

and so on

Those song survived till today

and thanks to that

people in Taiwan could reproduce

that folklore

This is so so huge

like a ball

huge

beehive or something

Daddy

daddy monkey is coming..

monkeys went all that way

at 6am this morning after sunrise

all this way

monkeys dad

monkeys are everywhere

on the trees

on the ground

jumping and playing

its about 40 or 50 of them

unfortunatley cameras batery is dead

so we are recording using Nexus

tweet tweet.. did You hear that? :)

[Flat ground + nice view = can sleep]

We met Mr Greene...oh yeay..cause..

we moved to the other section of the park

and then we saw museum and all that

not sure where was it [Buluwan?]

So in the section where was the museum

etc

it was mini cinema with 20 mins long movie

and i couldnt wait for that movie

i was staring at the big poster

i was fascinated

at the museum also

i was fascinated how they lived

and

we met one gentelman

who was working over ther

in the Park

in section around the museum

and he asked me why am i so excited

so i told him that am fascinated about that truku tribe

and while am here i want to learn something, not only climb the mountains

so he started to tell stories

etc

And i said i am waiting for that little movie

That gentlemen said to me

oh, because about year earlier or so.. around 2013

People had a meeting with taroko tribe

and interview them about their history

And so they made this movie

like a theater based on true story

And they recreated it

and made feature film

about Truku life

and i wanted to see it so much

and Mr Greene said that the whole movie is in Truku language

with Chinese subtitles

with no English, and he said i will understand nothing

i replied that i dont mind

i will try, at least i will see it

and so Mr Greene

who i am grateful to

gave me a present

i think i have it here with me

a CD

This one, CD

Thank You thank You thank You

oi, dont move the camera!

My operator Bartek moves the camera and pisses me off

"Echoing Taroko" bla bla bla

i can not read all that

It is beautifully told

but in chinese

but i saw the movie

but why did he give it to me?

for free, yet its worth ~350NTD

He gave it to me as he told me it has English subs

he didnt want any money

and in general he is a great man!

And so i wish to say Thank You to Mr Greene!

as i saw this movie

much later, after i receive that

as it was hard to see it inside my tent (^_-)

And what else i wanted to tell You...?

that i fell in love and all that

made a whole.

But why?

I think its because of the rainbow!

right?

And later on...on the way to Hualien

we left Taroko and hitch hiked

la, la ,la, bla bla and so we hitch hike

And what had happen??!

The car with 3 people in has stopped

elderly couple

and younger boy

i think older than me, yet younger than them

and those 3 people

took us in

it was sound of their language

they didnt speak any English

they spoke in strange language

mixed up with Chinese

Well and what happened

They were one of a few

people from Truku tribe!

who

took us hitch hiking

They were on the way to the church

they are believers

am not sure Catholics, but i think yes

they are believers

and erm...

they gave us a lift

we travel with them many hours

and we talked all the way through

we laughed

i cried out laughing

we sung

It was..a driver male

a lady

and some

boy

but why did they take us?

not because they are hitch hike fans

but they were worried that someone may kill us

if we will stand by the road with the thumb up

they wanted to saved our life

so they took us

and then they learned what was going on

am not sure they even understood

but they took us, spend with us few hours towards Hualien

they took us for lunch

real Taroko style

they were elderly couple

that lady was so beautiful!!

i cannot remember that man as sat in front of me driving

but that lady

i had such a good time

laughing, singing, talking

really super person!

So those people

who took us hitch hike

they

were going to the church

to help, deliver and locution something

cause i think

same as American Indians by Amazon river

as most of the tribes

accepts

Christian faith

and so this couple also

from Truku tribe who we met

they were Christians

on the way to

to

the church

They also took us to the village

where Truku tribe lives today

and we met one girl over there

all of them where involved in church life

and that girl spoke in English

and explained to us a bit

When we hopped of the car

to meet the girl, see the house and the church..

we all wanted picture together

and the best bit is..that i am 158 cm tall....

i mean.. 156...

okay, i am 155!

oh dear..alright! i have 154 cm

ya, i am...erm...so thats why am wearing a hat :P

cause am not high hills kinda girl

and this lady was...about a head shorter than i ammmm

yet she was so so beautiful!!

with beautiful voice

and just so positive!!

we talked for hours having no idea what about!

and so this is the story of Taroko...

because of that rainbow i think

that this whole love towards Taroko

gave the love back

from Taroko people

and i am so happy i can make this episode

because it was so superb!

and i hope i will see them again

maybe i will have a chance to talk to that girl again

I found my travel diaries

where may be any info

so i hope i will refresh our friendship

i dont think they are facebook and email kind of people

so maybe somehow via post officeand letters

And so thats all of it!

Dear Subscribers

if You liked this episode

i would like to ask for thumb up please

thank you for watching

it was quite long episode

but so interesting!

if You

wish to see more of same kind

but You didnt subscribe the channel yet

then dear viewers

i invite You to subscribe it

You can also press the bell

which is next to the "subscribe"

botton

any legeds

any legends

or tales

please comment down below

lets share, talk, learn

something new

or just remind

please drop a line below

leave comments

thank you so much

for watching

my movie about head hunters

because later on...when..

lets say..

Japanese pushed in that land

then Truku people, Truku brave males

and so they had to bring one head of a Japanese each

more stories like that

were all around the world

dear friends, thanks for watching

as i said, leave some comments, thumbs up and subscribe this channel

soon more similar movies will come out

on this channel

as during my 2,5 years travelling around Asia

very rarely i was around

tourist places

or with tourist, that

came from my home land

most of the time

i was with natives

with people from the place i was in

and so my knowledge is first hand ;)

richer and nicer!

Lately i watched an interview

with a lady

i think one of a last ones, who is left

from Taroko Tribe

exept of those who i have met

but

i think one of a last alive

with a tattoo

And she said in the interview

that

when Japanese invaded Taiwan

and killed most of a

unfortunately, the tribes

in Taiwan

they

Forbid them

having tattooist visitors

they said its ugly and forbidden

so they stopped invite tattooist, right

but they

as they wanted to keep the tradition

of tattooing

so they hid in the mountains to do a tattoo

as slowly, slowly..

cause forbidden

as ugly and cannot be done

slowly Truku people

stopped tattoing

and those of who live today, has no longer got tattoos like that

yet they believed that it is beautiful

and it gives a pass to the other side of the rainbow bridge

it gives You a husband

its just makes You cool dude or dudette!

and it is beautiful!

maybe some kind of ornament?

Socialization: Crash Course Sociology #14 - Duration: 9:36.

What do you, as you're watching me right now, have in common with a toddler who's being read a bedtime story?

I'll give you a clue.

It's also something you have in common with the kids in The Breakfast Club.

As well as with a soldier going through boot camp.

Give up?

You're all being socialized.

It's also the title of the episode.

You probably saw that.

Each of us is surrounded by people, and those people become a part of how we act and what we value.

This is known as socialization: the social process through which we develop our personalities and human potential and learn about our society and culture.

Last time, we talked about the HOW of socialization, how we learn about the social world.

And no matter which of the many theories out there that you like best, the answer seems to be that we're socialized by interacting with other people.

But which people?

What we didn't talk about last week was the WHO of socialization:

Who do we learn about the social world from?

What people, and what institutions, have made you who you are today?

[Theme Music]

Socialization is a life-long process, and it begins in our families.

Mom, Dad, grandparents, siblings – whoever you're living with is pretty much your entire social world when you're very young.

And that's important, because your family is the source of what's known as primary socialization –

your first experiences with language, values, beliefs, behaviors, and norms of your society.

Parents and guardians are your first teachers of everything –

from the small stuff like how to brush your teeth to the big stuff like sex, religion, the law, and politics.

The games they play with you, the books they read, the toys they buy for you, all provide you with what French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu called cultural capital –

the non-financial assets that help people succeed in the world.

Some of this cultural capital may seem fairly innocuous – I mean, is reading Goodnight Moon really making that big of an impact on a toddler?

Yes, actually.

It teaches the "value" of reading as much as it helps the child begin to recognize written language.

The presence of books in the home is associated with children doing well in school.

Another important form of socialization that starts in the home is gender socialization,

learning the psychological and social traits associated with a person's sex.

Gender socialization starts from the moment that parents decide on a gendered name and when nurses put a pink or a blue hat on the baby.

Other group memberships, like race and class, are important parts of initial socialization.

Race socialization is the process through which children learn the behaviors, values, and attitudes associated with racial groups.

Racial discrimination is partly the result of what parents teach their children about members of other races.

And class socialization teaches the norms, values, traits, and behaviors you develop based on the social class you're in.

This may help explain why more middle- and upper-class children go to college.

Not only can the families afford to send them, but these children are expected to attend.

They grow up in a home that normalizes college attendance.

Now, gender, race, and class socialization are all examples of anticipatory socialization

– that's the social process where people learn to take on the values and standards of groups that they plan to join .

Small children anticipate becoming adults, for example, and they learn to play the part by watching their parents.

Gender socialization teaches boys to "be a man" and girls to "be a woman".

But children also learn through secondary socialization –

that's the process through which children become socialized outside the home, within society at large.

This often starts with school.

Schools are often kids' first introduction to things like bureaucracies,

as well as systems of rules that require them to be in certain places at certain times, or act in ways that may be different from what they learned at home.

Not only do schools teach us the three r's – reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic –

but they come with what sociologists call a hidden curriculum – that is, an education in norms, values, and beliefs that are passed along through schooling.

Take, for example, a spelling bee.

Its main goal is to teach literacy and encourage kids to learn how to spell.

But something as seemingly benign as a spelling bee can have many hidden lessons that stick with kids, too.

For example, it teaches them that doing better than their peers is rewarding – and it enforces the idea that the world has winners and losers.

Another hidden curriculum of school in general is to expose kids to a variety of people.

When your only socialization is your family, you just get one perspective on race, class, religion, politics, et cetera.

But once you go out into the world, you meet many people from many backgrounds,

teaching you about race and ethnicity, social class, disability, gender and sexuality, and more.

School becomes not just a classroom for academic subjects, but also for learning about different kinds of people.

And, of course, schools are also where kids are exposed to one of the most defining aspects of school-age life: peer groups.

Peer groups are social groups whose members have interests, social position, and usually age in common.

As you get older, your peer group has a massive impact on the socialization process.

Let's go to the Thought Bubble to to see just how big that impact can be.

In the late 1950s, American sociologist James Coleman began studying teenagers –

how they interacted and how their social lives affected their education.

He interviewed teens in 11 high schools in the Midwest, asking them questions about what social group they identified with and who else they considered members of their group.

Based on these interviews, Coleman identified four main social categories.

And, uh, the names of these categories will probably sound familiar to you:

They were nerds, jocks, leading crowd, and burnouts.

Basically, he discovered the 1950s version of The Breakfast Club.

And with these social categories came social prescriptions – behaviors that were expected of people in those groups.

Coleman found that certain things were important to the members of certain groups, like being a good dancer or smoking or having money or getting good grades.

He also tested the students' IQs and assessed their grades.

And surprise!

It turned out that who you hung out with affected how well you did in school.

In some of the schools, getting good grades was considered an important criterion for the "leading group" – aka the popular kids– but in other schools, it wasn't.

And in the schools where good grades were not a sign of popularity,

students who scored high on IQ tests actually did worse on their exams than similarly smart students at schools where good grades made you popular.

Thanks Thought Bubble!

Now, Coleman's study might seem like common sense – of course you and your friends are gonna be pretty similar.

Don't we choose to be friends with people who are like us?

Well, not entirely.

Coleman's study showed that we don't just pick peer groups that fit into our existing traits –

instead, peer groups help mold what traits we end up with.

OK, so far, we have family, schools, and peers as the main forces that influence someone's socialization.

But what about me?

Yes, me, Nicole Sweeney.

Am I part of your socialization?

Or more precisely, are youtube videos considered a form of socialization?

Short answer: yes!

Long answer: The media you consume are absolutely a part of your socialization.

TV and the internet are huge parts of Americans' lives.

And how we consume our media is affected by social traits, like class, race, and age.

A teenager or twenty-something in 2017 is much more likely to watch online media, like Netflix or youtube, than television.

And low-income Americans watch much more TV than their higher-income counterparts.

The media we consume also impact us dramatically.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, for example, has said there are connections between excessive

television viewing in early childhood and cognitive, language and social emotional delays.

But TV can also influence the attitudes of viewers, especially young ones.

For example, studies have found that kids exposed to Sesame Street in randomized-controlled trial settings, reported more positive attitudes toward people of different races –

most likely a result of the program's wide variety of characters from different racial and ethnic backgrounds.

TV also affects us well beyond childhood.

One recent study found that MTV's "16 and Pregnant" may have acted as a cautionary tale,

helping to change teen girls' attitudes toward birth control and contributing to declining rates of teen pregnancy.

So far, the types of socialization we've talked about have been fairly subtle — but there are also more intense types of socialization.

Total institutions are places where people are completely cut off from the outside world, and face strict rules for how they must behave.

First coined by sociologist Erving Goffman, the term "total institution" refers to places like the military, prisons, boarding schools, or psychiatric institutions that control all aspects of their residents' lives –

how they dress, how they speak, where they eat, where they sleep.

And in a total institution, residents undergo resocialization, where their environment is carefully controlled to encourage them to develop a new set of norms, values, or beliefs.

They do this by, basically, breaking down your existing identity and then using rewards and punishment to build up a whole new you.

Think about every boot camp movie you've ever seen.

All soldiers are given the same haircut and uniform, expected to reply to questions in the same way, put through the same grueling exercises, and humiliated by the same officer.

This process re-socializes the soldiers to put extreme value on their identity within the group, making them more willing to value self-sacrifice if their unit is in danger.

So whether you're GI Jane training for a reconnaissance team or Molly Ringwald trying to maintain her queen-bee status in the leading crowd,

the you that you are has been powerfully shaped by people and institutions.

Now, think back on your own life – who has been the biggest influence on YOUR socialization?

Who do you think that you yourself have influenced?

Hard questions to answer, maybe, but definitely worthwhile – and hopefully a little easier now that you've learned how sociologists think about it.

Today, we learned about five different types of socialization.

We talked about anticipatory socialization from your family, like gender norms, that prepare children for entering society.

We discussed the "hidden curriculum" in schools.

We learned about peer groups through a look at James Coleman's study of teenage social groups.

We explored the role of media in socialization.

And finally, we talked about total institutions and how they can act as a form of re-socialization.

It's just the first pass. - Yeah.

Give me some feedback, anything you think of.

Shock absorption, lateral movement.

Cup holder?

You may wanna think about some AC down in...

Let's go. I'll give you a hand.

No. Don't-Don't help me.

138.

138 combat missions.

That's how many I've flown, Tony.

Every one of them could've been my last, but I flew them.

Because the fight needed to be fought.

It's the same with these Accords.

I signed because it was the right thing to do.

And yeah, this sucks. This is, uh...

This is a bad beat.

But it hasn't changed my mind.

I don't think.

- You okay? - Oh, yeah.

Are you Tony Stank?

Yes, this is Tony Stank. You're in the right place.

Thank you for that!

Never dropping that, by the way.

"Table for one, Mr Stank.

Please, by the bathroom."

Tony...

I'm glad you're back at the compound.

I don't like the idea of you rattling around a mansion by yourself.

We all need family.

The Avengers are yours. Maybe more so than mine.

I've been on my own since I was 18.

I never really fit in anywhere,

even in the Army.

My faith's in people, I guess.

Individuals.

And I'm happy to say that, for the most part...

they haven't let me down.

Which is why I can't let them down either.

Locks can be replaced, but maybe they shouldn't.

I know I hurt you, Tony.

I guess I thought by not telling you about your parents...

I was sparing you, but...

I can see now that I was really sparing myself.

And I'm sorry.

Hopefully one day you can understand.

I wish we agreed on the Accords.

I really do.

I know you're doing what you believe in,

and that's all any of us can do.

That's all any of us should.

Priority call from Secretary Ross.

There's been a breach at the Raft prison.

Yeah, put him through.

Tony, we have a problem.

- Uh, please hold. - No, don't.

So no matter what...

I promise you...

if you need us...

if you need me...

I'll be there.

Heads up, Cap.

German Special Forces, approaching from the south.

Understood.

Do you know me?

You're Steve.

I read about you in a museum.

They've set the perimeter.

I know you're nervous,

and you have plenty of reason to be.

But you're lying.

I wasn't in Vienna. I don't do that any more.

They're entering the building.

Well, the people who think you did are coming here now.

And they're not planning on taking you alive.

That's smart.

Good strategy.

They're on the roof. I'm compromised.

This doesn't have to end in a fight, Buck.

- It always ends in a fight. - Five seconds.

You pulled me from the river.

Why?

- I don't know. - Three seconds.

Yes, you do.

Breach! Breach! Breach!

Buck, stop!

You're gonna kill someone.

I'm not gonna kill anyone.

Suspect has broken containment!

He's headed down the east stairwell!

Come on, man.

I can't trust my own mind.

So, until they figure out how to get this stuff out of my head...

I think going back under is the best thing.

For everybody.

Thank you for this.

Your friend and my father...

they were both victims.

If I can help one of them find peace...

You know, if they find out he's here...

they'll come for him.

Let them try.

So, who was it? Who hit you?

Some guy.

So itchy, man, God.

What's "some guy's" name?

Uh, Steve.

Steve? From 12-C?

- With the overbite? - No, no, no.

You don't know him. He's from Brooklyn.

Ouch.

Well...

I hope you got a few good licks in.

Yeah, I got quite a few in, actually.

His friend was huge. Like huge.

That's way better. Thank you.

Okay, tough guy.

Love you, May. Hey, can you shut the door?

[Summoners War] Les défenses d'arène que je skip et pourquoi ? - Duration: 24:08.

Hi everyone, it's Sheisou

I couldn't record last rush hour

I just came back from the beach

Sweating like a pig

So I just wanted to chill a little

So I did rush hour

I went pretty well

I finished at the 36th place

Nothing incredible during this rush hour

I climbed rank pretty fast in the end

I used this defense

I started using Ariel double rina Fria defense

But all those bullshit defenses didn't work at all

I got farmed like crazy

But with this defense, I didn't get attacked a lot

And I managed to win a few defenses that helped a bit

So i think this is the best defense I can come up with my account today

So I will try a full rush hour with this defense, just to see how it goes

I also did my weekly RTA fights in order to keep my rank

Since I streamed last Monday

I won't be able do RTA in stream every tuesday, sorry about that

We will have to wait next season

Or maybe if I stream a Monday i'll do it there

Whatever, this video's goal

Is to explain something I don't take time to explain when I do rush hour :

Why do I decide not to attack one defense

And why this defense is good

We're Monday, just after rush hour

So there are still some people who left their defenses the way they were during rush hour

So i'll have time to explain why I usually skip it

There was one good defense in my arena List

This, for instance

I usually skip during rush hour

why

So now I have to explain without just saying "FUCK THIS I SKIP"

Well, 33% spd leader skill + orion

Well, this defense could be better with Kabilla instead of Orion

Because like this we can maybe outspeed with bernard

But this is still risky

If this is a Kabilla instead of Orion, he's garanteed to get first turn

And again, we can think that orion will get first turn

Because better spd leader and all

It can happen

He gets first turn

Triton is OP in arena defense

Because he will strip, stun, and disturb the speed tuning thanks to his atb-reduce

The atb-reduce part won't be the same on everyone

Some units might resist, or it won't even happen

And then, the turn order might be different from what it should be

For instance, Lushen could go before konamiya and Wolyung

And don't forget that he can stun

Afer that goes Psamathe who will push skill cooldowns for 1 turn, and maybe stun something

And Rakan who might one shot something or at least provoke

It's not safe to attack this defense

One solution would be to take a tanky offense

To tank the damage and everything going on

But it's still hazardous

We don't know what might happen

We could waste two or maybe 3 turns with units stunned

Because Triton, Psamathe and Orion going crazy can stun

Rakan will kill something,

well it's a pain in the ass

We'll see what happens when we attack it

And think "Hey I can go first let's lushen it"

But here think, what if Orion and Triton are lushen-proof

If they are, there would still be the whole team there after my lushen

Orion didn't have will runes

We could use Leo against this defense

But at higher levels, atb booster have will runes too

I'm not saying that this guy isn't strong

But we are expecting will runes on atb boosters to counter leo offenses

No stun ? (broken psamathe plz buff psamathe)

who fuck, i forgot about my offense

Wolyung gets to move before and kill something turn 1

I'm not going to kill Triton because that wouldn't be interesting

Well, who lost attack bar ?

Nothing much

Well

I know you are saying that I went overboard saying this was difficult because in the end it was easy

But this is all because I got first turn

And this is why this defense is better with Kabilla than with orion

We are encountering more and more Kabillas in defense

The 120 base spd is so hard to deal with

Because bernard "only" has 111, so it's hard to compete

Considering we have similar rune quality, Kabilla will go first

Let's find a Kabilla defense

This is not bad at all

Here it is

This kind of defense

This, I skip

Same problem, Psamathe + Kabilla

Best spd leader + best base spd = 1 st turn

Praha strips, psamathe pushes skills back and seara stuns/kills something

I hate this

I hate this so much

Let's see

I don;t know what to do against those defenses

I don't think I have the monsters or runes to hit that

OHHH

He is the one who doesn't have the runes haha

Or maybe, this guy is in 2029 and his seara and praha are lushen proof

Though, in my last rush hour video, everything was lushen-proof !

Well it's monday, maybe he doesn't have this rank during rush hour

A guy this rank during rush hour has stats according to this strategy

Well you get the point, those very offensive defenses

when it's RH, I think the guy is OP so I skip him

Let's find a 3rd one

Let's see

This doesn't seem scary because of shitty base spd (tiana)

Actually, this defense scares me too

I don't know how to fight this

I could lushen the other teams,

But I don't know how to fight this

Because a Tiana offense could be fucked up by that Iris

Let's pretend my Alicia is a spd leader

A lot of people are using Seara tiana offenses

But here it's hard, because Irs a good base spd

She might strip + stun something right of the bat

And if Tiana is stunned, it's fucked

And if I outspeed with a lushen comp, I don't kill Ritesh Perna. (double lushen might work though)

I don't know what to do against this

Let's see what happens with a Tiana comp.

He will get first turn, Iris will strip/stun something

Psamathe will push cd

Maybe ritesh first for armor break

Oh that's a shame she didn't use this on Tiana

Well, not so bad I guess, but it could've been worse

Considering how frequently artificial intelligence decides to derp

Iris could've used first skill and stun tiana

Or she could just decide to use skill 2 on Tiana to silence her

There she decided to use it on Galleon, which didn't have any impact

Wow, that's something original

Anyway, I think I explained enough why those Spd leader / Kabilla are OP

When I said Kabilla, Orion works too

I usually skip those defenses during rush hour

I know you must think that this didn't seem scary because I won, but it is scary to hit this during rush hour because we don't know if the stats are OP or not

So now, let's talk about the 2nd type of defense that I usually skip

Ultra tanky defenses with fria

I usually use Alicia for my offenses because fire defenses were a thing, mainly to counter lushens offenses

So i put good runes on my alicia in order to kill everyting that's heavily fire

and when it's Super tanky, Wind, and with a fria, I don't know how to hit it

So I usually skip

Because here, if I kill Rakan, Rakan + Fria will die, and the other two will be full life without break def

And If I kill Xing Zhe it's the other way around

That's why I skip

Fria became really interesting

With super tanky units, we just let her, lvl 35 and even crappy runes, and it works just fine

It counters the type of offense that i am using

We see more and more Fria every rush hour, I know I just have to refresh

Here it is, I just have to refresh to see her again

lvl 35 again because why not, she will surely die this way

This defense isn't so scary to me

I just have to kill Feng Yan turn 1 and it's okay

If someone dies at the same time as Fria does, he dies

She prevents people from dying if the dies first, if they die at the same time it doesn't change anything

So i'm gonna hit Feng yan with Theomars, he'll barely stay alive

Alicia's gonna kill it for good

And there will just be Rakan + Rina

And it should be fine

Let's see, this, this

Well, "barely" xD

That wasn't so easy actually

I'm gonna hit rakan because it's not fun that I procced

I'm gonna drop Feng Yan health bar to a pixel

That was a BIG PIXEL

I didn't think Feng Yan would still be alive after Theo +Alicia

I don't know if she glanced or something

I don't know, my friend

I should have killed Feng Yan earlier

Why am I doing this ?

I talk and then I do some stupid shit

I was thinking "Feng Yan out, i'm safe"

Well it's actually kinda true

Should be fine

This configuration doesn't scare me

Don't know why really

Well I know why, because I was pretty sure to kill Feng Yan turn 1

Well my Theo got so many turns it helped haha

That's why we love Theo

Can we find another Fria defense ?

I think so

Even if it's Monday, I think people forgot to change their defenses

Or they are just being boring

Oh shit that last defense was good

Now I can't talk about it sadly

oh here's another one

Do I skip this?

yes

I skip this, because let's see, if I kill the wind guy again

So that my Alicia won't struggle too much to kill the rest

I kill Fria + Xing Zhe, Mo Long and Theo are back to full life

I get stunned, something gets killed, I don't know

Oh now that I think about it, if XZ and Fria are dead, it should be fine

Again, I'm talking about IF i get to kill Xing Zhe turn 1

Being Wind, my Alicia can glance

I have a hard time hitting this, but those people who have zairos...

They just don't give a shit about this

I'd like a Zaiross please !

Fria would be inexistant if I had a zaiross

And the others guys would be useless too

Thomars would die without endure proccing, theo can't die with this

Okay, I need a Zaiross

My Theo is in good shape today !

Let's pretend my Theo didn't proc, and hit theo

Will I let the Wing guy live with just a pixel again ?

YES, okay

Well, I think it's better if it happens now than during rush hour

The enemy theo is in good shape too !

Let's kill him

I think I will be fine, but again, it wasn't safe

I don't think I have the monster to kill this quickly without taking any risk

So I Skip

I talked about Zaiross but Bomber ao could work against this

Well maybe this isn't enough to kill everything. Theo will proc endure,

Fria dies, but the other 2 tanky stuff will be full live after this

Anyway, this kind of defenses hurt my eyes

When I try to use this kind of defense, I get farm like crazy, I must be the only one maybe

Can we find another one ? There are a lot of Fria def anyway (or not)

Well, 3rd type of defenses that are hard to hit

Defenses with Amduat (or Radgoll for rich people)

With Tiana offense, I'll get to move, and Amduat will cut right after my Tiana thanks to his passive

People rune Amduats fast, but just slower than the casual Tiana

This way, people don't have immunity anymore because tiana removes it, and he can aoe slow / despair stun

Pretty boring

I think that I would've skipped during rush hour

Because, 1st chance to lose : Praha that Strips and stuns Tiana

Even if it's not so likely to happen because Praha can glance, fail to strip (not 100% activation rate) and get resisted

And after that, Amduat can stun something

I will hit this guy so you'll get to see what happens

So Praha will use 2nd skill

Like I thought, she didn't stun Tiana, even though she didn't glance

I'll use Tiana's 3rd skill, and now Amduat will cut in between

Here it is

C-C-C-Combo breaker

This is annoying

I'm lucky with this violent proc, maybe my Alicia will move

Or not

Oh she got slow debuff on her face that's why

The fight isn't looking so good as you can see

Not looking good at all

Galleon MVP saving my ass

Not really haha

Mayne should be fine

Ooor not

Oh shit I lost

So you finally saw a fight that didn't end well

Maybe hit him ?

Well, this is an annoying defense

Amduat pretty op

Oh it's moteo, didn't notice

I don't think he uses that defense during rush hour ?

I don't think because it doesn't look SOO scary

Even if I lost, I usually dare to attack this because I think that amduat won't be effective and derp (skill 1)

He can no despair stun too

Look, amduat isn't so reliable in my opinion

But he is scary in a way because it CAN happen

Let's retry it for fun

Maybe it will happen again

Even praha can derp

well it isn't important because she didn't have any impact before

Amduat stunned my tiana again

Why did he move , that Perna

You see, amduat isn't 100% effective

But we are still afraid to hit this because we could get fucked

Let's find a last guy ? Well whatever you got the point

3 types of defenses that I don't attack

1st : Super fast offensive cc teams

2nd : Tanky teams with fria

Tanky teams with amduat/ragdoll

From this point it's just Useless blahblahblah really

Have a nice day and see you next time

[Vinesauce] Vinny - Disney XD Pac-Man Show Reaction - Duration: 3:15.

But apparently that Pac-Man 2...game, the Pac-Man World game is apparently good

[The kids are gonna love this~]

(owo) What's this?

Hang on a second...someone just linked me to something that I need to see

Okay...so I don't know if this, this is a Disney XD show?

Is this a Pac-Man show?

[The kids are gonna love this~]

[Sure to go viral~]

What the ffffuck? [Aw man I'm a meme...]

WHATTHEFUCK (x2) (Insert generic Vinny giggle)

What will...What will you do?

[...if it wasn't so horrible]

[This would be funny...if it wasn't so horrible]

LOL 149 INTERNETMEMES IN 300 SECONDS

I didn't know this show existed...

[I'm too lazy to type it again, refer to earlier in the video if you want to know exactly what they're saying]

So they take a picture of a Pac-Man zit...

[Aw man, I'm a meme...]

Oh my god... (Insert the sound of a dying Ranked S Jabroni cackling)

Why does that exist!?

Alright...well there you go

Theres, yep, there was a new Pac Man show. As recently as 2014

I have to now discover if it was cancelled...

Um...

It's called Pacman and the Ghostly Adventures

I knew nothing of this

And uh...

It says here...

that...

it's still running

wait wha-

Tryin' to stay relevant, huh?

Is this really still running?

(I apologize in advance for the visuals fucking up here, I blame Sony Vegas, please do not hate me)

Series premiered um...

Has not aired...

(READ THE FUCKING SCROLLING TEXT)

So...it had like a year, two seasons, and then just...

They just...completely forgot about it

Just...totally fucking forgot about it

It's in Hell right now...

It's in Pac Hell

Interesting...

Yeah I didn't know

I really honestly did not expect Pac-Man to be revived...

For the modern generation of chill'ins ⊂(▀¯▀⊂)

Seriously

I would just imagine like 80's kids remembered Pac-Man and then...

maybe some 90's kids ( ◞・౪・)

And that was it

But umm...

yeah that's a really really bizarre thing for a very strange...

series that has taken a lot of turns, some not so great
