Youtube daily report Jun 22 2017

I've 'ad a long time to work on this lesson, and I bet what I just said went right by you.

Hi. James from engVid.

Today I want to talk about letter deletion.

In English we do this a lot, and I don't want you...

So I want you to understand: I don't want you to use it, but I'm going to teach you

how to hear it, how to understand it, where it is commonly used so you can quickly identify

when we're speaking quickly.

Like when I said to you: "I ave", I said: "I have", but I dropped the "h" and that's

today's lesson.

We'll do other ones where I'll drop a "t", but for right now I want you to concentrate

on the dropping of the "h", and we call it the "H deletion" or "H deletion" if you're American.

All right? Let's go to the board.

You'll notice over here, my man, Mr. E, he has: "A, B, C, D, E, F, G, ?, I",

the deletion of H. Quick note.

Okay?

When we want to be clear on what we are saying we say each word exactly and precisely.

Okay?

However, when we say something regularly-okay?

This is the examples of why we delete it-or we speak quickly or fast, we drop sounds.

One letter we do this with is the letter "h".

Okay?

So as you can see, that's going to be my quick explanation on that, but I'm doing this sort

of like a warning for you, this little part because you are not allowed to do this because

you have an accent and you haven't mastered the English sounds.

First you have to master the sounds, so it's better to say: "I have" instead of "ave",

"I have", right?

Master the sound.

The second thing is this lesson's more about helping you to comprehend or listen to English,

and understand English quickly.

Okay? Are you ready?

Time for me to do that magic board thing.

[Snaps]

So let's talk about where the letter "h" is commonly deleted.

We know it's deleted, but I'm going to give you about five examples or six where you can

see the letter "h" is deleted often or quite commonly.

Okay?

Remember I said we do it when we speak quickly or it's something we say regularly?

So it won't be a surprise when I show you the examples on the board, why this would happen.

The letter "h" is commonly dropped when we use the verb "to have" or when we use pronouns.

So, "have" in this case becomes "ave".

"Has" becomes "azz", and I'm putting the "z" sound because pronunciation, it's not "a-s".

I know you "ass" for some of you, I know people who speak Spanish or have a Latin background

will "ass", because they see the "s", but we say the "z" sound: "azz".

And "had" becomes "ad".

"E 'ad about five minutes before e 'ad to leave."

If you're really careful...

Well, you have to go over here to hear what I actually said, but I used two of them at

the same time and it commonly happens, so much so that we as English speakers don't

realize we're not actually speaking the language, but just sounds.

All right?

Let's go over to the pronoun side of the board.

Okay?

Well, the pronouns you'll see we have "he" becomes "e".

Right?

"E's a really good guy", and I'm not talking about Mr. E. "E's a really good guy", instead

of: "He is a really good guy."

Okay?

"Her", I don't know err very well.

I don't know err very well.

It's not "her".

"I don't know her very well.", "I don't know err very well."

And "iz".

Right? I know it's "iss", it looks like this, "his", but this makes this sound, the "iz" sound. Right?

"Iz brother iz a good friend of mine.

Iz brother is a good friend of mine."

Notice how I'm speaking quickly, and for some of you I always speak quickly.

But generally speaking: "I don't know iz schedule.

I don't know iz schedule."

It's not: "I don't know his schedule."

Now, once again, I need to repeat this: You do not use this when you're speaking.

I'm giving you this, I'm giving you these examples by saying them so as you hear me

say them you're like: "That sounds familiar", and that's why sometimes you think you know

what we're saying, but you're not too sure.

It's because we delete these sounds.

Now, if you saw what I did here I actually at the beginning played with you by I said:

"E ad about five minutes."

And I said: "E ad", so instead of: "He had five minutes to talk",

"E ad five minutes to talk to us, then E had to go.

I don't know if err brother's coming, err brother's coming." Right?

"Ave you finished that project I gave you?

Ave you...?"

So instead of: "have you"...

It's difficult for me. See?

"Ave you finished the work I gave you? Have".

Sometimes the words with the deleted "h" are added to other words to create a new compound word.

One example is: "What have".

You might say: "Waddave you done this evening?", "Waddave you done with David?"

, or "Waddave you done to my room?"

Okay?

So that's an example of combining this deleted sound with another kind of slang sound.

Now, I did a video on that.

You'll go check that one out where we talk about things where words are brought together

or cut, or we say combined in English.

Right?

That's just one example.

Now what I want to do is go for a short quiz.

Now, remember what I said.

I keep saying it again and again, "reiterating" means to say again and again: This is not

for you to use, it's for you to understand.

And to understand that this kind of thing: "E", "err", and "iz" occurs with things we

say very regularly or we're speaking quickly.

But when we want to be clear, you will never hear somebody say something like:

"The police ave a warrant for you."

They'll say: "The police have a warrant for your arrest",

because they want you to clearly understand.

Okay?

Keep that in mind.

For you it's important to say all of the sounds.

The reason why is you're learning the language and you need to change your mouth, because

a lot of the times one language will say "r", for instance, Japanese people say "r" differently.

For "arigatou", "arigatou" their tongue is at the front of the mouth.

Well, in English: "arr" is in the back.

We curl our tongue.

Right?

You can only do that with practice to notice the difference.

Right? You got it?

So for you this is a lesson more on comprehending or understanding what English people speak,

not a lesson for you to copy.

All right?

So, let's go to the board, do the quiz, a short one, and let's see if you really understood

what I said.

[Snaps]

Okay, quiz time.

Here's a little hint.

A "hint" means a suggestion or some advice for you.

Okay?

Look for the letter deletion in movies, TV, and music. Okay?

Notice when it happens.

Right? That'll be important.

Notice when it happens, like: "E az", like pay attention, right?

But more importantly, notice when it doesn't.

You remember what I said before, okay?

We do not do letter deletion when it's very important.

I want to be clear and I want to be precise, I will not delete the letter at all.

Okay?

However, on regular speech or quick speech that happens.

Keep that in mind at all times, and if you understand what I said just now, then when

we do the quiz it'll be easy for you.

And one more note before I go, you're going to notice on the quiz I have:

"have, ave, es, ave".

All right?

This isn't a real word. Right?

As I told you, when we're clear we say the whole word.

This is just to remind you that you never write this down on paper.

It's what we say. Okay?

So this will help you understanding, better listening skills, but it's not something to

copy and put down and say: "E az!"

They'll go: "What is that?

This isn't English.

Maybe it's Spanish, but it's definitely not English."

Okay?

Do not write it on paper, do not try to speak it.

Just learn it so you can get better at listening to real English.

Listen like a native, basically.

Okay?

So, first question on the board: "I _______ ONLY one minute to talk to you!"

What would that be?

"Have".

Huh? "Have"?

Why "have"?

Simple.

Do you notice how: "I ONLY", "ONLY" was emphasized here, right?

"I only have one minute to talk to you."

Be very specific.

Remember I told you about being specific or being clear?

That person is going to be very clear with you: "I only have one minute to speak to you",

not any...

Not another second or 10 seconds more.

It's very clear.

They won't use the contraction.

What about number two?

"How _______ you been doing?"

Well, usually we say: "How are you doing?

What's going on? What's up?"

This one would be: "ave".

"How 'ave you been doing?

How 'ave you been doing?"

It's casual, regular speech.

You say this 20 times a day to about 20 or 30 people. Right?

Let's try the next one:

"You _______ to tell me the truth, RIGHT NOW!!"

What do you think?

You're right.

If you were paying attention, here and it said: "RIGHT NOW!!"

I'm being specific.

"You have to tell me the truth, RIGHT NOW!!

I'm not playing with you."

Specific, deliberate, exact.

You're starting to see a pattern here, aren't you?

Yeah.

Okay.

If someone's angry, if someone wants exact information - they're going to use the exact word.

Commonly or regularly used, or speaking really, really quickly, we'll delete the "h".

Let's try number four.

"It's a great day _______ gotta be relaxing outside."

That's my stomach.

I'm hungry, so get to the answer quickly.

I got to eat.

You can hear that rumbling?

Okay, I've given you enough time.

You can hear my belly rumbling.

"It's a great day e's gotta be outside relaxing."

Right? Why is it "e's gotta be"?

Look at this, what is that?

Is that a regular word?

Of course not.

This is a slang term, it's a word that's been put together.

"Have to be", right?

"Have got to be", so: "E's gotta be", so you know it's not going to be: "He has gotta be",

even this one's contracted.

This is the one that's the best one. Right?

"E's gotta be outside.

E's gotta be with his friends.

E's gotta be having a beer."

Right?

Casual, regular talk.

And finally, the last one.

Think carefully on this one, all right?

"The police _______ a warrant to ARREST YOU."

What would that be?

Hmm.

Okay, a couple things to think about.

The police, that's kind of serious, isn't it?

And arresting you, going to jail?

Huh.

Yeah, I know you got it right.

"Have".

"The police have a warrant to ARREST YOU."

Right?

They don't: "The police 'ave a warrant", no, it's not friendly.

You're going to jail, this is some serious business. Okay?

So, my time is up.

They're not coming to arrest me, luckily.

But I do want you to go to www.engvid.com, okay?

You know "eng" and then video, yeah, my old shtick.

Don't forget to click, tap, punch on the screen to do the quiz at engVid.

All right?

Thanks a lot.

Ciao.

ಕಾಮರೂಪಿ (ಎಂ. ಎಸ್. ಪ್ರಭಾಕರ) ಸಂದರ್ಶನ - ಭಾಗ ೩ | Kamaroopi ( M.S. Prabhakara ) Interview - Part 3 - Duration: 21:53.

Sir, it's believed to be

raise of the right

in the USA we have Donald Trump

and in India we have national parties in the front

similarly in France the chances of

Marine Le Pen, from the far-right political party

winning the Presidential Elections are high

defeating the socialist President François Hollande

similarly in India

we have sub nationalisms like

Kannada Nationalism and Tamil Nationalism are on the raise

which seems to be contradictory

cause on one hand there is globalisation

forming capitalist markets and creating global village

but in reality that s not happening

you can a raise in

nationalism as well as sub-nationalism, how is it?

You see it's a contradictory process again,

the so called right wing, I say 'so called'

because, you cannot specifically term them as rightists

For ex, Trump!

Trump is a phenomenon

we are still not able to understand

it's like the

typical New York Times sort of a

auto response

American East Coast Liberal Establishment

it's very much anti Trump

like the BBC. How well he lied before the elections?

He is a liar

A notorious liar

but in order to confront him even the rest of them have lied

Thats true, they are not using any new rules

they are just hitting him

even the media is behaving irresponsible here

I too am part of the media

so I dont want to comment anything on that

For instance, Narendra Modi, people admonish him

he just shrugs its off

he is getting so strong everyday

thats it's alarming

and we are not any programmatic,

say we are not allowed to conduct a meeting.

making a big issue of such trivial things

Sitaram Yechury, one of the speakers was apparently in Nagpur

What was the agenda of the meeting?

to change the minds of the people?

how many people attended Yechury's meeting?

It was a nice one, good.

For instance, the left wing

it has been splintered,

very fragmented, they have many issues within themselves

and the right wing is such a living set now

living set!

but organisationally they haven't been able to unite, why?

conduct a meeting

how many communist parties are there?

there are two

CPI(M) and CPI

what are the idealogical differences between the two?

they may claim to have lot of differences

but I know what those differences are

but in the present context

I find the Indian politics now

so much

what Lenin called Parliamentary Criticism

it has become ingrained in all of us

Walk Outs!

Sound the speaker and thump tables

what does it even mean?

and now especially of the TV again

the Indian bourgeoisie is so intelligent I tell you

never underestimate. They have provided

TV which is nation wide spread now including the Parliament.

people are seriously asking to stop

the coverage of the parliament sessions

cause when they know parliament is in session

people start wth demonstrations

which would later be broadcast in the evening

in their constituency and people would be

pleased to see their leader... is this the way to...?

What kind of sect Modi represents

have you people ever thought about that?

he is not going to massacre all the Muslims

He is much too intelligent for that

He knows that it can't be done, cause of the huge number

so he is going to marginalize them

as far as possible

or they become irrelavant now

someone was seriously arguing that may be we should

ourselves withdraw from politics

these are the threats

which means that democracy

to that extent

becomes insufficient or imperfect

I am not sggesting that the concept of democracy is perfect

if 25% of the population is made to sit out

then what kindof democracy is that?

can you imagine the simmering hatred

or tension or despair

how desperate they might feel

their desperation isnt baseless

there might be few riots in the UP

but nation wide configuration is not possible

cause there are so many different situations

in different parts of the country. It's too big a country

who can mobilise it?

can any political party be mobilised on the simple issue

that all Muslims should be driven out of the country?

is it possible?

is it even desirable?

even BJP wouldn't want it. That's why I think

even in this Yogi Adithyanath's elections

I still can't understand how did it happen

whether he was

forced and Modi was forced to accept him

because they could not elect any elected

member as the head of the

BJP legislative party

earlier people would say that Congress would impose people from outside

election would be conducted, but they don't trust their own people and

get someone from Delhi or somewhere to become the Chief Minister

they dont trust any of the elected leaders of their own party

and BJP is now reduced to that state

Q - there is this idea floating around of Kannada nationalism

how do you see it?

as in, how should one take it?

in the Federalism structure

state wise or language centric nationalism prevails

how do you see it?

It is a complex issue

does not seem feasible

there are several sub languages too

for instance if there is Kannada nationalism movement

there would be uproar from other sub language speaking people

like Tulu, Beary etc

Konkani, Tulu, Beary, Kodava many other languages exist

Kodava from Karnataka for me is one

of the most interesting cases

Kodavas have the potential to become a seperate state

because in every way they are qualified to be

very distinct people

they are quite different from rest of the Kannada people

be it the language, culture, territory or traditions

they even have certain constitutional provisions

that are not available for rest of the people of Karnataka

like free arms

license to bear arms without license

but the problem with them is that they have this

hang up about Muslims

they detest Tipu Sultan

so the Government is well aware of all these issues and

works accordingly

we underestimate the bourgeois

whether the Congress or the BJP

personally, deep down I don't see

any difference between the Congress and the BJP

both have the same agenda

it was Indira Gandhi from the Congress party who

bombed the civilains in Mizoram

in Aizawl

Indian Airforce planes bombed

Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram

because there was a rebellion there

they couldn't control

for the Naga people there is no difference

between the Congress and the BJP

infact they prefer the BJP

cause they have been able to do some

negotiations atleast

I know the man who negotiated this particular deal

I know him well

cause of which some relative peace is there in Nagaland

which was not there earlier

so sub nationalism based on language is not

possible cause we dont speak one single language

in no country a single language is spoken

Hindi for instance, you speak of Hindi imperialism

stupid of Tamilians to speak of Hindi imperialism

Mu last question to you,

do you read present day

contemporary Kannada writers?

I do read

but I cannot speak

authoritatively cause

I cannot speak with such knowledge and authority

I enjoy reading Kannada prose

not keen about reading Kannada poetry

I dont mind reading Pampa

I enjoy it

even Kumara Vyasa

i like reading old kannada literature

but modern Kannada poetry

not so interested in reading it, I feel it lacks something

it seems anemic

sometimes it seems to be obsessed with caste

the new Dalit writers

may be there are potraying their perspectives

or problems through these poems

For instance Siddalingaiah's 'madigara haadu', I still remember it to be

such a powerful collection of poems

later he became a part of the establishment and gave up everything

I think he disowned that poem, if I have not mistaken

he doesn't read it publicly anymore

earlier he used to recite it at public events

not anymore

I dont read about Kannada politics

I do read only a bit

mainly cause it becomes so sectarian

it's very sectarian

Their politics once I was trying to follow very closely

did not find it very interesting

its sub divided into factions/ groups

they have degenerated into money collecting machines

they are more like 'roll call' parties

I learnt later what a roll cal party means

someone explained it to me

in Kolar especially it's very common

it's so fragmented

and there are many issues within the parties

the kind of facilties or amenities

that the current government gives

these groups misuse these benefits and

have formed into mafias

where is the Dalit unity?

but then unity against whom?

when was younger, I remember from my experience

I grew up in Kolar in this

very house

I knew about Brahmins

and there was something called NB

the non - brahmins category no other categories were there

We had heard about the untouchables but didn't know further details about them

there were some in my class too, there was a Dalit boy who would sit next to me in class

I still remember

there was nothing uncommon about it

we would all sit on wooden platforms on the floor

there were Muslim students too

and the only other

distinctive feature of the other NB's

NB which would include all these people would be that

they would eat meat and the Brahmins wouldn't

untouchability existed in the form of maintaining hygiene or cleanliness

I remember bringing home a hand bill from a barber once

he was distributing hand bills for a movie

every Thursday there would be a fair/ bazaar here

there was a single movie hall back then

so Thursday evenings he would distribute the hand bills

cause the movie would release on Fridays

and I took a hand bill from him

so all these people who played 'bands' were basically barbers by caste

they are called ' baaja bajanthri '

so I took the handbill from a barber's hands

I had touched a untouchable person

so once I was back home I was made to undress, take bath

and then given a beating by my father

so untouchability existed

but not specifically limited to Dalits

it was towards any non brahmin

any NB was a untochable, because they eat meat

as far as I remember that was the identity mark

back then when we were kids.

but the identity markers are difused so widely

where is the identity marker?

there is no common identity marker

each caste/ category has a different identity marker

so, I am still interested in reading literature

but I dont have time

I am 81 now and I am re-reading a lot of the books

yesterday I was reading this book

by Gordon Childe

called Man Makes Himself

I had bought it back in 1964

had read a bit of Marx

I was doing my thesis on George Orwell

but this book, to apply Marxist ideas

to history was fascinating

its a small book

I am re-reading it now

so I like to re-read such interesting books

I lack the energy to read any new books now

But I am aware that a lot of people are into writing these days

I do like to read

But I face certain limitations now

I am both physically and mentally weary now

and I have limited time

so I dont see the point in reading something new

and another point is

literature is basically for pleasure

these days you dont see people writing with

pleasure as an objective

the writing these days is solemn

it lacks humor

Chandrashekar Kambara wrote the story GK Masthara Pranaya Prasanga

GK Masthara Pranaya Prasanga

it was a little story, very humorous though

but the writers today are not bold enough to write such stories

cause they are afraid that they might offend someone

they all go for deep/ heavy subjects

they might think we

lack seriousness in life

I feel all kinds of topics should be written about

for instance I read the 'panchanga', Hindu almanac

I dont believe in it, I am good with the

Gregorian calendar

about 10 years ago I realised

every day there is a fair, festival

in one or the other village/ town/ city

in Karnataka

the whole world goes on, we neither have the

knowledge or the interest about it

There was a controversy at the time of independence

the constitution was just shaping up

the question was which song should be the national anthem

there was a strong by the Congress people

there was no BJP back then

most of the people were of the opinion that it should be 'vande mataram..'

but there were others, though nationalists

like Nehru,

suggested that it should be

'jana gana mana...' as the national anthem

that's when the RSS wrote the false history that

'jana gana mana...' was written to welcome

King George V to India

such experts in lying

never seen such experts

it was all a lie

and ultimately Congress, as usual compromised

that 'jana gana mana...' will be the

national anthem and vande mataram will

have the equal status

and will be the 'national song'

I dont see the difference between a song and an anthem

jana gana mana became the

national anthem and vande mataram had the equal status

and was termed as the national song

and further, even now any Congress session

opens with Vande Mataram

so this is the difference between the

Congress and the Hindu nationalists

so this is the background

no one has studied

vande mataram

Vande Mataram Sujalaam Sufalaam

a beautiful song in sanskrit

and the song is also part

of a novel called Anand Math

a very famous novel by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee

most of you must have read it

its about invasions and attacks on Bengal by Muslims

East Bengal was frequently invaded by the muslims

the Bengali Nationalism

and the vande mataram that we read

from the novel Anand Math

has the following lines

Sapta Koti Kantha Kalakala Ninaada Karaale..

Nisapta Koti Bhujaidhruta Kharakarvaale..

Ka Bola Ka Noma Eith Bole

Bahubal Dhaariniin Namaami Taariniim

Ripudalavaariniin Maataram

which means 7 crore voices

and 14 crore hands defending

the mother land

when I read it I was very young

how were these numbers derived at?

7 crore voices and

14 crore arms defending the mother land

Da Ra Bendre has written about 33 crore Indians

in one of his writings

So Da Ra Bendre's vision of India

India's population back then was 33 crores

approximately correct figure

so his nationalism... he was a small obscure poet from

small town Dharwad

but his was a

pan Indian view

of 33 crore people of the country

the gist of the peom was that though the country has a

strong population of 33 crores, still the country was enslaved

and not a free country

where as in Vande Matam, it says

we are 7 crore people

and we are going to

take revenge

so the 7 crore voices in this peom

are that of the 7 crore Bengalis

and 33 crores in Da Ra Bendre's poem stands for the 33 crore Indians

you get it?

so the Bengali vision in Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's

Ananda Math

when he speaks of the 7 crore voices

it echoes, the voice of the

7 crore Bengalis

But poor Da Ra Bendre, small town Dharwad poet

sitting in Sadhanakeri

and imagining Mother India

he says 33 crores

we are the children of the nation

and yet

you are enslaved

so this is the

example of Bengali chauvinism

and it is addressed

against the Muslims
