AcidTube-Chemical reactions
Hey there and welcome to my channel!
In today's episode we are going to check how long does it take for a McDonald's burger to dissolve.
Many of you wrote me about this so let's find out!
Yesterday I bought a McChicken in one of the fine restaurants in Bratislava.
It's in pretty good condition
even though I forgot it and left it in my pocket for a full day.
I want to see if this or the homemade burger dissolves first.
So let's prepare the opponent, shall we?
A little cooking lesson:
Cut the bun in half, add the meat, add some sause, add some salad,
at least it covers parts of my burnt meat, and its done.
A not so pretty but delicious, 100% homemade burger.
For the experiment I am using 33% concentrated hydrocloric acid,
it is almost the highest concentration of HCl.
We have it in our stomach too, but it is 30 times weaker.
I am measuring the acidity with a standard HP indicator paper.
As you can see it has a range of 0 to 12
0 the strongest acids
14 the strongest bases
but actually we have the maximum value of 12
Let's see the pH value of soap.
It has the value between 8 or 9
I always use safety goggles and gloves, respirator
Lab coat is also because the acid can burn my skin if it gets on it.
It's not only painful but can cause scars for a lifetime.
I pour 0.5 l of HCl and let the hunger games begin!
May the odds be ever in your favour, burgers.
The reaction almost took 4 hours and none of the burgers disappeared totally.
How is it possible that the burgers in our stomach decompose much faster
yet the acid is far weaker? There are a few factors involved:
The digestion starts in the mouth with chewing. With chewing we provide far bigger platform for digestion
It's like cooking potatoes: if you slice them first they will cook faster,
it will take some time to get them right.
The same goes with chewing.
Another reason is the presence of digestion enzymes in our stomach
They help to decompose the protein.
Let's check out the arena!
Wow, they really shrinked and blackened.
You can clearly see that the homemade burger is in a far worse state than the McDonalds burger.
Let's move a little closer and see what's left.
The winner of the burgers is my homemade burger.
In this condition I would not eat either of them for sure.
But even seeing them all blackened and disgusting, I would choose the homemade one.
At least I know what's in it.
