Sestrice introduce

Front Wrap Cross Carry

Find the middle marker and place it on your back.

Bring both tails to your back,

cross them and pull them up over your shoulders.

Be careful not to twist the wrap.

Check your middle marker

and make a pocket for your baby.

The wrap creates an X on your back

and there are no twists.

Carefully insert the baby into the pocket.

If you are wrapping a newborn,

make sure to support the back

and head all the time.

Place the baby so that the knees are higher than the bottom.

Pull the top rail to to baby's ears.

Pull the bottom rail and the rest of the fabric

between your belly and the baby.

The fabric supports from knee to knee.

Pull down both tails of the wrap properly,

to spare some effort when tightening the wrap ☺

Start to tighten the top rail.

To make it easier,

slide it down from the shoulder.

Tighten the wrap strand by strand to the bottom rail

and place it on the shoulder.

You can help yourself

when you slightly move the shoulder backwards.

Keep holding the side that is tight.

You can hold it with hand

or secure it between your knees.

Do the same at the other side.

Start with top rail.

Be precise and tighten gradually and sufficiently across the whole wrap.

(Carrying will be comfortable that way ☺)

Take both tails and lower the X on your back.

(Carrying will be more enjoyable ☺)

Guide the wrap above your baby's legs,

cross both tails under the bottom

and guide them to the back beneath the legs.

Tie a double knot at your back.

You can gently loosen the bottom rail from your back,

to make it more comfortable for the baby.

Spread the straps to strengthen the carry

and fixing a sleeping baby's head.

The back is supported sufficiently

and round – forming a C letter.

Even if you bend forward, the baby sticks to you.

It is high enough to kiss ☺

The knees are higher than the bottom

– forming an M letter.

Ready to wear!

March Reads // Exit West, The Unseen World, Wing Jones, etc! [CC] - Duration: 11:31.

This is definitely a hazard of some sort. As of

the day I'm filming this, March 27th, I've

read 20 books this month. I've already

made videos on about nine of them, so if

you're interested in my thoughts on

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi

Coates or Human Acts by Han Kang, I

recommend my Bodies and Singularity video.

Both very different, but important

stories with powerful voices that I

recommend. And then for a bunch of YA

contemporaries I read this month,

including If I Was Your Girl by Meredith

Russo, The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola

Yoon, We Are Okay by Nina Lacour, The Hate U

Give by Angie Thomas, Under Rose-Tainted

Skies by Louise Gornall or Radio Silence

by Alice Oseman, go check out my previous

video. I loved all of these in very

different ways and I talked about them

there. And of course my review of Strange

the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. Now, onto

the rest. I read two new releases about

the refugee experience this month the

first one was The Refugees by Viet Thahn

Nguyen. This is a collection of short

stories about self identity in

Vietnamese American refugees. I really

liked the story The Other Man, which is

the story of a young man coming over to

America during the Vietnam War and

coming to live in an apartment in San

Francisco with a gay couple. It's a story

of him grappling this his identity as a

refugee, as well as his identity as a gay

man. Other than that, I kind of agree with

a lot of the reviews I've seen that this

was not a super memorable collection of

short stories. I know that Nguyen wrote

The Sympathiser and won the Pulitzer

for it last year so maybe stick to that

because it sounds like a much more

engaging story than I found this

collection of short stories to be, but

that's just me. The other book I read

about refugees this month is one that's

being talked about quite a bit on

booktube because I believe it's in

the Book of the Month Club box this

month and it is Exit West by Mohsin

Hamid. This is story of Nadia and Saeed.

Nadia is very independent and strong

willed and makes choices that she really

sticks to. Saeed falls for Nadia in one of

their classes and they come together in

a very unique way to escape their

war-torn country that they love as it

falls apart. They escaped using these

doors that lead to other countries where

they become refugees and ultimately

explores how so many people around the

world are refugees and what it means to

be one and become one. I really like the

magical realism of the doors themselves

because as Hamid has said, it isn't about

the journey for the refugees, it's about

their identity before and after they

make that journey to a new place. I just

thought that was a great tool to explore

that and it's something that I found

really engaging throughout the story.

There was a brief moment of self-harm

and it mentioned

suicide, so I just wanted to mention that.

Overall, I really liked the story and if

you're looking for a book about the

refugee experience I highly recommend

this one. Speaking of doors, let's talk

about Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan

McGuire. Great segue, I know. Every Heart a

Doorway is a story of a home for people

who have fallen down rabbit holes, gone

through the backs of wardrobes, and

entered doors to other worlds before

somehow, for some reason, then ending up

back in the real world. They don't know

how to accept their new old lives and so

they come to this home until they reacclimatise

or find their old doors again.

This book dismantles all sorts of

stereotypes and calls out loads of

different problematic cultures without

ever feeling preachy or forced. It

dismantles toxic masculinity and

homophobia and transphobia, it explores

gender expression and asexuality and

loads of other issues in a regrettably

too short novel. Because of the length, I

didn't feel like I connected with the

story or the characters very much. I

really liked the idea and the characters

but I just didn't feel like I got enough

of any of that to feel invested in it. I

feel like if the book had omitted the

murder mystery aspect that it actually

has in it, it would have given more time

to explore all these other things and

would have worked better for me

personally. I liked it and I will be

picking up the second book when it comes

out this summer, but ultimately I just

wanted more. next I read a novella called

The Melody of You and Me by M Hollis

because I want to read more books with

pansexual main characters, but I actually

really did not enjoy it. It's a very

short novella, I read it on eBook in

under an hour and it's basically just a

meet-cute between these two girls, one of

them is pansexual, and one of them is a

lesbian and it's the start of their

relationship but it just felt so

two-dimensional to me. Nothing about

these people felt real, the writing was

incredibly forced, the dialogue didn't

sound like how people talk at all. There

was this one point where one of the

characters is looking for her girlfriend

at a university that she's never been to

and she's looking for the ballet studio

and what she says is something along the

lines of, "I am looking for a class to

meet my friend Josie there" and it's like

that's not- if you were going into a

place you've never been, you just go up

to someone and say, like, "hey do you know where

the ballet studio is?" You wouldn't be

like, I am looking for a class because I

know a person in the class, like that's

just not how people talk. I really like

the sex positivity of it all and the

normalization of things like female

masturbation but ultimately it just was

not for me at

all. I did not appreciate the writing. I'm

really happy other people seem to like

it, though. I hope I can find more books

with pansexual representation that

speaks a bit more to me and feels a bit

more real. After that, I listened to the

audiobook of Unfiltered: No Regrets, No

Shame, Just Me by Lily Collins. I

absolutely love lily collins, I've always

loved Lily Collins, I've loved here for

years, so I knew as soon as i saw this

book was coming out that i had to either

read or listen to it. It was, you know, a

young celebrities memoir, but i did

still love reading it and learning a bit

more about her experiences in the

business having grown up in it because

her father is, of course, Phil Collins. She

writes about her experiences with

abusive relationships and eating

disorders and it all felt very real and

raw while also being optimistic and

hopeful. I love Lily, so it was really fun

for me and I recommend it if you're also

interested in Lily. Next was the

Argonauts by Maggie Nelson, which was a

fantastic exploration primarily on

motherhood and queer identity. It does

reference a lot of literary criticism

and high literary culture that was

essentially lost on me having not

studied English or philosophy or

anything like that. I think perhaps it

could have benefited from maybe

footnotes or something like that I don't

know but it was a fascinating look into

Nelson's life and she was very honest

about her experiences in a way that I

found super educational and honest and

refreshing. Next I read The Vegetarian by

Han Kang which I believe was also

translated by Deborah Smith, just like

Human Acts. Having loved Human Acts and

finding it such a interesting and

different and unique, powerful read, I was

expecting to really like this other work

from Han Kang, especially as I believe it won the translated Man Booker Prize last

year and won tons of other awards. The

Vegetarian is the story of a woman who

has become a vegetarian very suddenly

after having an incredibly vivid dreams.

The novel is split into three sections,

the first one narrated by her husband,

and then her brother-in-law and then her

sister and essentially it just explores

how this change really alters her life

as well as the lives of those around her,

especially in a culture that does not

really have vegetarians generally. I'm

going to be honest while Human Acts do

not have enjoyable content, I loved

reading experience because I felt like I

was being told a story that I'd never

been told before. But this was a much

less enjoyable experience, it was strange

and uncomfortable and often not in a way

that I personally found was earned. I

don't know. I'm sure there's loads that

can be said on it. I bet it'd be really

interesting to break

down in an academic setting and study it,

but I just really did not enjoy my

reading experience of it. Also huge

trigger warning for self-harm and

especially sexual assault and rape and I-

it was just not good for me. After that, I

moved on to The Unseen World by Liz Moore.

I heard loads about the story at the end

of last year and I've been really

excited to get my hands on it and it was-

I lived up to the expectations. The

Unseen World is a nonlinear narrative

telling the story of Ava and her father

David. David raised Ava by himself in a

computer science lab where he was

essentially developing AI. When David

starts to lose his memory, Ava begins to

put pieces of his life together to

figure out his full story and full past. I

love Ava and the rest of the cast of

characters and all their different

dynamics throughout, throughout the time

of this novel which takes place

throughout a lot of Ava's life. Moore's

writing is beautiful, but not

necessarily in a lyrical way just in a

way that she puts all the perfect words

together, if that makes sense, like it

just clicked so well. It's a story about

family and identity and had a really

mysterious quality that made me unable

to put it down throughout the entire

reading experience. I'm going to put an

interview with Liz Moore down below that I

really liked especially when she talks

about artificial intelligence, but be

aware there are spoilers in that video, so

maybe read the book first and then watch

the interview. The next book is Wing

Jones by Katherine Webber. Wing Jones is the

story of a Chinese African-American

teenager called Wing, whose brother is

kind of the all-American boy on track to

get a football scholarship while she just

quietly goes through high school. Then

one night her brother gets into a car

accident while driving drunk and two

people end up dead. This is the story of

how that event changes the lives of the

entire family and all of his friends and

how she takes up running as a way of

coping with the grief and anger she's

experiencing. Wing's family is the

sweetest thing ever especially her

grandmother's Granny Dee and Lao Lao who

constantly get into different arguments

especially because of their cultural

differences as Granny Dee is black and

Lao Lao is Chinese. it is worth noting that

Webber is not Chinese African-American,

but she did live in China for years and

she's married to a Chinese man, I believe,

and she also worked with a ton of

sensitivity readers to ensure that she

didn't misrepresent cultures. I met her

at a signing here in London and she

talked a lot about how she really did

not want to hurt her readers by

misrepresenting certain cultures and so

she made a concentrated effort to not do

that and to work to make sure that she

gave it the best representation possible,

which I thought was really great, so it's

not ownvoices but as

an outsider I think she did a really

great job with both cultures. Symptoms of

Being Human by Jeff Garvin is the story

of gender fluid Riley who is trying to

come out to their parents right at the

start of their fathers re-election to

the Senate, as well as starting a new

school. Riley is advised by their

therapist who is only person who knows

about their identity to start an

anonymous blog. The blog gets super

popular when Riley advises a trans girl

to come out to her parents and she ends

up getting beaten by her father and it

takes-it's gets picked up by national

news. I appreciate the depiction of

anxiety in this book and I do love that

there's some gender fluidity in the YA

world, but I didn't feel like the story

was entirely natural. The story felt like

a lot of Riley telling the reader what

gender fluidity is rather than it coming

out naturally in conversations. I'm not

gender-fluid and neither is the author

from what it can find so I'm not sure if

this was 100% the best representation.

Again, I like this book and I am happy

that exists it just felt a little forced

to me. I also just haven't done enough

reading on it to say if it's adequate

representation, but if you have read it

let me know down below yourself. And the

final book I have to talk to you about

today does not come out until July

13th, but it is Juniper Lemon's

Happiness Index by Julie Israel. After

her sister dies, Juniper is just a mess.

She uses a happiness index to chronicle

all the positive parts of her day, which

she started doing while her sister was

still alive. Then she finds a love letter

that her sister had written to a

mysterious "You" and also loses one of her

happiness index cards that conveys a

secret that she never wants to tell

anyone. The story then follows Juniper as

she tries to find the missing index card

as well as mysterious "You" that her

sister was dating and along the way she

finds herself with this kind of group of

unconventional friends that help remind

her that there is more to life than her

grief. This is a debut novel and I think

that Israel's is a great job of

subverting your expectations of more

generic characters by putting different

twists on all of them. It was a quick

read, but it was really sweet and smart

and funny and heartwarming and I did

really love these characters. I'd love to

read actually another book- I don't often

say this with contemporaries- but I'd

love to read another book about the

characters in this story. This is an ARC

copy and i just realized what they wrote

in Kayley's happiness index, oh, I have to

fill that up! How sweet. And that's

everything! I tried to make videos along

the way so that the

end of the month wrap-up wouldn't be

this long, but here we are, life goes on.

Let me know if you've read any of these

books in the comments or if you have any

thoughts on them and let me know what you

read this month, as well. I'll see you all

next time. Bye!

Storytelling

This is the story of the small hole

Not as big as the crater of a volcano.

No no no no,

That is very big.

Nor is the hole in the ice,

where fish and seals swim.

Brr, it's cold.

And not the hole in the meadow,

where many animals come and go.

Such as a rabbit, a spiral a worm.

Nor is it the hole in my drawing.

Uy, uy.

That happened to me when deleting.

Buf, what a mess.

In this hole the water disappears after my bath.

But I do not mean that hole!

No no.

That's the hole in the bathtub.

And is not the hole in the cheese, which so bad smells!

That's the hole that made the mouse.

And I do not mean the hole in the lock of the door,

I look through occasionally.

Wow, how many things behind the door.

If I can even spy on .

And much less I mean

the wormhole in the apple that I don't want to eat.

A hole made by a worm.

And I do not mean my silly hole in my pants.

That's a hole I made when I fell.

No no no!

The small hole that I mean,

the little hole that I mean,

It is in my belly,

where I can tickle.

PAW PATROL MISSION PAW TRANSFORMERS - SAVE THE STELLOSPHERE AND MILES FROM TOMORROMLAND - Duration: 19:32.

(spaceship flying)

- Wow we're on Earth again.

This looks like a perfect place to land

and fix the Stellosphere.

Miles to Stellosphere, go ahead

and land at my coordinates.

(spaceship flying)

Time to get to repairing things.

- [Narrator] But little did Miles know,

that off in the distance,

our evil villain,

Romeo,

from PJ Masks, was watching him.

- (laughs) Look, it's Miles from Tomorrow

and he's landed with the Stellosphere.

With that kind of technology,

I could take over Adventure Bay

and rid myself of these Paw Patrol Transformer pups,

once and for all!

Come on, Robot.

Let's go get that Stellosphere!

- [Robot] I'm right behind you, Romeo.

- It looks like the flux capacitor has gone not capaciting.

We'll have to fix this before we get going again.

- This Stellosphere is mine!

First, I gotta take out that little guy down there.

Miles, he'll be a thorn in my side if I don't do something

about him now.

I'll shoot him with my freeze ray.

(laughs)

Hello Miles, I'm gonna take your spaceship.

It will be mine!

- Oh, you think you're going to take my spaceship, huh?

I don't think so.

- Well, say hello to my robot's

freeze ray!

(laser firing)

- [Narrator] Oh no!

Romeo has frozen Miles from Tomorrowland!

If he takes over the Stellosphere,

Adventure Bay is doomed!

Will the Paw Patrol Transformer Pups be able to come in

and save the day?

- [Mr. Hands] Hey, who is that?

(Laughs) That's right, it's Mile from Tomorrow!

And it's got the entire family there.

Look, there's Miles.

There's Loretta, his sister.

Hey look, there's his Dad, Leo.

Wow, and there's his Mother, Phoebe.

Woah!

And look, there's the Ostrich.

I love the Ostrich.

What's his name?

His name is M.E.R.C.

(laughs)

Woah! That's so c...

Hey, wait a second, I forgot about these two.

(laughs)

It's Admiral Watson and Crick.

Woah!

Wow, these guys are so cool!

And I wonder how our story's gonna turn out,

'cause the Stellosphere landed and Romeo took it over

and I'm really scared that he's gonna have it forever,

but maybe he'll get some help

from our Paw Patrol Transforming Mission Pups!

(laughs)

Hey guys, I want to show you this really cool toy.

This is Miles from Tomorrowland,

but wait a second,

there's more!

Woah!

Look everybody, look.

Look,look,look,look,look,look.

It's...

the Stellosphere.

Wow!

Hey, and there's Miles right there too.

Oh man, this thing is huge!

Look at it, it's so big.

And it's got three different spaceships in one,

'cause it transforms into different ones.

Wow, this is gonna be so much fun to unbox.

I can't wait.

♫I can't wait to unbox this

Hey, it actually has some lights and sounds.

Let's press it and see what happens.

- [Miles] Astronomical!

- [Mr. Hands] Woah!

- [Miles] Three, two, one, blastoff!

(spaceship blasting off)

- [Mr. Hands] Wow!

That's really cool!

Blast off!

Hey look, a glow.

What's that say?

It says, "Glows in the Stellosphere charging chamber."

Oh man, that's so cool.

I can't wait to see this part work.

This is gonna be such an awesome toy review.

We've got the Stellosphere from Disney Jr.

and we've got Miles from Tomorrow

and we've got these cool toys right here too.

Oh my goodness.

Let's put 'em right there, so we can see them.

Oh man, we've got so much to unbox.

(laughs)

But you know what?

We need help unboxing these,

'cause we can't do them ourselves,

we need some Toy Time TV magic!

Hey kids, we need Bobby!

You want to help call Bobby out with me?

You can do that, it's really easy.

If you've done it before, you know how,

but if you haven't, I'll tell you.

We just have to say three times:

"Hey Bobby, come on out and play!"

Okay, you ready to do that with me?

Alright, lets do it.

Hey Bobby, come on out and play!

Hey Bobby, come on out and play!

Hey Bobby, come on out and play!

(bell dings)

- Did somebody call me?

- [Mr. Hands] Yes we did, Bobby.

- Wow!

It's Miles from Tomorrowland.

- [Mr. Hands] Yes, it is.

It's the Stellosphere, Bobby.

- Woah!

It's got Miles and his family.

- [Mr. Hands] Yes, it does.

- It's really cool!

- [Mr. Hands] (laughs) It's really big too.

And that's why we need your help, Bobby.

- Yeah!

Did you want to unbox it?

- [Mr. Hands] Yeah, we do, we want to unbox it

and we need your help and the kids at home can help too.

- Yeah!

You can help at home unbox the cool Miles from Tomorrowland.

- [Mr. Hands] (laughs) Yeah,

you want to tell them how, Bobby?

- Yeah.

You count to three with me and then say

"Abracadabra!"

- [Mr. Hands] (laughs) Okay!

Well we'll count to three

and the kids at home can do this too

and then we'll say the magic word,

"Abracadabra!"

Okay kids, are you ready?

- Yeah!

- [Mr. Hands] (laughs) Alright, here we go.

Count with us.

One. - One

- [Mr. Hands] Two. - Two.

- [Mr. Hands] Three. - Three

- [Mr. Hands] Abracadabra! - Abracadabra!

(angelic harp strum)

- Wow!

Look at the Stellosphere, Mr. Hands.

- [Mr. Hands] I know, it's really cool and really awesome!

- Wow, it's got all kinds of cool things.

Look.

Look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look,

look, look, look, look, look, look.

- [Mr. Hands] (laughs) I know!

It's really cool!

Miles from Tomorrowland is really awesome.

This is a very cool toy

because it breaks into three different ones.

- It's huge!

- [Mr. Hands] Yeah, it is.

It is ginormous!

- Woah, I want to go finish our pretend time.

- [Mr. Hands] I do too, Bobby.

We should all go finish our pretend time adventure right now

'cause I want to find out what's gonna happen to Miles

and the Stellosphere.

- Yeah, me too.

Romeo is a bad guy.

- [Mr. Hands] (laughs) Yes, he is!

Well, let's go and maybe

our Transformer transforming mission Paw Pups

from the Paw Patrol will save them.

- Yeah!

- [Mr. Hands] Let's go pretend!

- [Narrator] When we last left our story,

Miles had been frozen

by Romeo,

and Romeo was gonna steal his spaceship.

- I'm gonna fly the Stellosphere.

Okay, let me up here, open it up.

Woah.

(mimics mechanical whirring)

Wow, look at all these advanced controls.

They're so awesome.

Okay, now what does this do.

(mimics mechanical whirring)

Ah, it shut on me.

Well, I think I'll make it fly.

(mimics Stellosphere engine sputtering)

Something's not working with it, Robot.

We have to use my evil genius powers to fix it.

I don't know what's wrong with it, Robot.

(mimics starter turning)

(annoyed grunting)

- [Narrator] But little did Romeo know,

that what was broken with the Stellosphere

was the flux capacitor.

- I want to attack Adventure Bay with this thingy.

Aaah!

Robot.

Make Miles talk.

- Unfreezing Miles now.

- You won't get away with this, Romeo.

- But I will.

What's wrong with this thing?

Is it a piece of junk, just doesn't work?

- I'm not going to tell you, Romeo, what's wrong with it.

- [Narrator] Just then,

the Paw Patrol Transformer Mission Paw Pups

approached the spaceship.

- Rubble rubble, on the double.

Hey Chase, it was a spaceship that we saw fly down

into Adventure Bay.

- But it's not aliens, it's Miles from Tomorrowland.

- Chase is on the case.

And it looks like Romeo is trying to steal his spaceship.

Paw Patrol Pups!

Transform into transformers!

We've got to stop him.

(mechanical whirring)

Paw Patrol transformer pups, get Romeo!

- Rubble rubble, on the double.

Bumble Bee will take care of the robot

so that he doesn't have any problems with us.

Hey Robot, look at my fist!

(mimics punching)

(Laughs)

Look at you!

Robot is down for the count.

- Chase is on the case!

I'm Optimus Prime, the cool Autobot leader

and I'm gonna get Romeo.

Bam!

Romeo, we're going to put you in jail

for trying to steal the Stellosphere!

- Drat, I can't believe that you Paw Patrol

Transformer puppies have stopped me again.

Woah!

- Rubble rubble, on the double.

Yeah, Romeo, you're gonna go to jail

'cause you can't steal stuff, that's bad.

- Well, Paw Patrol puppies,

let's see how fast you can catch me.

You may have won this time, but I'll be back!

Come on, Robot, let's get out of here!

- Woah, thanks Paw Patrol.

We landed here

because our flux capacitor was broken on the Stellosphere

but now I can fix it

and we can get back into outer space

and start exploring more.

- Chase is on the case!

We're glad to help Miles.

The Paw Patrol Transformers are always here to help out.

Paw Patrol, we've done really good today.

We've stopped Romeo, once again,

from trying to hurt Adventure Bay.

Paw Patrol Transformer Pups, transform

and roll out!

(mechanical whirring)

(engines revving)

- [Mr. Hands] That was a super duper fun adventure!

Wow, did you kids at home have fun?

You did?

What about you Bobby, did you have fun?

- [Bobby] Yeah, Mr. Hands, that was lots of fun.

- Yes, it was.

It was really fun playing

with all of our Miles from Tomorrowland

and our Transformer pups.

That was a fun mix-up, mash-up, adventure!

And if you liked it, be sure and like this video

for us to do more mash-up toys!

Hey, there's a lot to look at here today on Toy Time TV

and the first thing we're gonna look at first

are our little collectible figures that came with it.

Ooh, look at that.

It's pretty cool, isn't it?

I mean, it's really neat, look at her.

She is right there, Phoebe.

And there's the little girl, Loretta.

And, of course, here's Miles.

And M.E.R.C., the ostrich, over here.

Oops, he fell down.

And his Dad, Leo, right there.

Now, these are all collectible figures.

Oh, can't forget Admiral Watson and Crick.

Right here.

Now these are all collectible figures.

They're not really made to be played with played with,

because they have these little things on the bottom,

see right there, that hold them up.

But they are a collectible and they're highly detailed.

They look really cool and just like the show, don't they?

It's pretty awesome!

(wood block being struck)

And this is the Stellosphere!

It's so cool because it's got

a lot of really awesome features.

Not only is it one vehicle,

it turns into three different ones

and it comes with Miles!

Look at Miles!

♫Miles, Miles from Tomorrowland

There he is, oh, look at him.

He's so cool.

His arms move and so do his legs,

which is really awesome.

And I really like him and he fits really cool

into the little pod vehicle here.

I'll put him in there, so that we can see him

and he'll just fit right down in there and

(mechanical whirring)

it closes and

(ship blasting off)

it takes off!

(laughs)

Well, the main Stellosphere, like this, is huge

and it has lights and sounds.

Get it to talk to you.

- [Miles] I got this!

Three, two, one, blast off! (spaceship taking off)

- Blast off! Woah!

It goes really high in the sky.

It's got all kinds of cool features,

like you can take this out

and this is a separate vehicle by itself

and we can put one of our figures in here.

Let me open this up.

See, right there?

Ooh, look at that.

It's got a console too.

Woah!

Look at that console right there, that's pretty awesome.

And it flies around,

(mimics spaceship hovering)

little hover vehicle, whoa!

But not only that-

- [Miles] Three-

- Oh, it's gonna take off again.

- [Miles] Best mission ever!

- It opens up to reveal the inside, look at that.

(Scottish accent) Oh, look at it, Captain's chair.

That's really awesome!

Every time I lift it, you can hear it tries to take off.

- [Miles] Three, two, one, blast off!

(spaceship taking off)

- Woah, (grunts) you hit Mr. Hands in the stomach!

(laughs) Miles, you got some really powerful engines.

(laughs)

- [Miles] Best mission ever!

- But, all of these move around and it's also got a cockpit.

Might just turn it off here,

'cause it's making a lot of noise!

There we go.

And it's got a cockpit right here,

(laser charging)

(laser firing)

where you can put all the figures of Miles,

or his mother, or his father right there too.

So, it's pretty awesome.

It make a lot of sounds.

A whole lotta sounds. (laughs)

But, it's really cool, let's take Miles

and we'll put him right here like this

and put him in the Captain chair.

Like that, and...

♫ Oo-Doo-Do-Doo

there he is.

Now, it also, you can take this piece for storage

and you can put down in there so it stores all up

and you put it all together like this

and you have it all together for easy storage.

(laser firing)

Oh, you gotta close up the bottom here.

Forgot about that!

(laughs)

Oh boy.

Wow, it's making a lot of noises.

Let's see if we can get it to stop.

Ah, there we go.

Ooh, there's some other cool features too I forgot

to tell you about.

It's got cool lights in here.

Let's go ahead and open this up.

I'm really excited, 'cause when we take Miles

and we put him right down in here like this,

let's get him to stand up,

we can put a blue light on him, watch.

I'll move the Captain's chair.

There we go.

And watch.

(switch clicking)

Ooh, can you see the blue light?

(switch clicking)

Aww...

Oh, there it is!

(switch clicking)

I wonder what it looks like if we turn out all the lights.

Let's turn out all the lights and see what happens!

There's one light.

Let's get that light right there too.

Ooh, I'm excited!

Okay, here we go, let's see what it does.

(switch clicking)

Ooh, he glows!

Look at that.

That's so cool!

Oh, wow, that's really awesome.

He's, like, glowing blue.

Oh man, that's so cool!

I like this part about the toy.

It's really awesome!

(laughs)

Look at Miles, he's glowing blue!

Well, this has got a lot of cool features.

Let's turn our lights back on now

and we'll put everything back in here like this

and let's put it all together

so we make it into a really compact spaceship

because that was really fun with our adventure, wasn't it?

It was so much fun!

Let's go ahead and close this up like this.

There we go, and put this right here like this

and it'll stay on top and now we've just got one vehicle.

Woah!

This is really cool.

Let's put him right in here

so he can fly the spaceship.

Okay.

There we go, he's gonna have to stand up

'cause he won't sit down.

(laughs)

But this is the Stellosphere!

It's really awesome from Miles from Tomorrowland!

(arrow whizzing)

So, what do you think of this toy, Bobby?

- Oh, I Liked it a lot, Mr. Hands.

- Well, it also needs six AAA batteries,

but it comes with demo batteries but once those get out

you're gonna have to put new batteries in it

and they go on the bottom of the toy.

- Wow!

We had fun.

We had fun, is a fun adventure with him

and the Paw Patrol Transformers and Romeo.

Fucking urine.

It's nasty.

I mean, if something's gonna turn into urine,

There should be a law or something.

Would've saved me a whole lot of heartache.

Trump Goes Full Psychopath In Tirade Against CNN President - Duration: 4:45.

According to a report from the New York Times, back in 2016 Donald Trump sent an email to

CNN president Jeff Zucker where he said that, "It's very unfortunate Jeff that you were

reporting so many negative things about me and I always find a way to get even."

That particular sentence from Donald Trump, the man who was the Republican nominee, want

on to become the president, is currently the president of the United States.

"I always find a way to get even."

That is a psychotic statement if I've ever heard one.

Again, this man is our president.

This is how Donald Trump has always lived his life.

If you wrong him or if he perceives that you have wronged him, he will get even.

He will make your life a living hell.

At least he thinks he will.

He's not a bully.

I'm tired of using that word.

I know I've said it and I know a lot of people say it, but this goes beyond being a bully.

Donald Trump is a psychopath.

Donald Trump has psychopathic tendencies.

The desire to get even with anyone who you perceive as having wronged you is psychopathic.

That is what Donald Trump is today.

That's what he's always been.

We're starting to see more and more of this come out.

Again, in this email that he sent to Jeff Zucker was from 2016 but he hasn't changed

in the six or eight or 12 months since he's sent this email.

He's still out there attacking the media.

Instead of actually talking and doing important things as his job, as the president of the

United States, he's too busy getting on Twitter and attacking people who disagree with him.

We saw it this past weekend with Chuck Todd.

We've seen it with the senators and representatives and Obama and other former politicians.

He's still out there attacking Hillary.

Donald, you are the president of the United States.

I know you don't follow the news other than Fox, but the rest of us do.

There are really horrible things happening all around the planet right now, right now

and you're worried about what the media says about you.

I remember covering the George W. Bush administration.

Every day a new negative story and not just negative horrible things that the administration

had done.

There were plenty of times where people just took to the internet, took to the media to

make fun of the guy because he couldn't even string a sentence together, but for all of

the attacks that George W. Bush got from the media.

He didn't care.

He let it go.

Whatever.

Screw it.

I'm still going to do the White House correspondence dinner.

It's funny.

I can take a joke.

For all of his flaws, George W. Bush could at least understand that people didn't like

him and it doesn't necessarily matter.

It should have mattered to a degree but not to the degree that you let things get to you.

You have never pointed out an instance where CNN reported something that was completely

incorrect about your administration or about your campaign.

You can't point to anything that they've lied about.

You can get pissed off if you want about negative coverage, but unless you can prove them wrong,

you don't have a leg to stand on.

Not everything about you is positive.

Not everything about anybody on this planet is positive.

You've got to learn to let it go because your psychopathic tendencies are going to get the

United States in a hell of a lot of trouble.

The things that we see unfolding all around this globe.

The issues that you refuse to take any leadership on could easily come here.

To be honest, most likely be initiated by you because you're so hell bent on seeking

revenge or as you say, you always find a way to get even because that's what your priorities

are.

It's not about helping anybody in this country.

It's not about making America great again.

It's about looking at your enemies and finding ways to make their lives miserable so that

you can feel a little bit better about yourself.

Diversity of Experience: The Path to Becoming Chief - Duration: 35:05.

FOGEL: I JUST WANT TO START THIS BY SAYING

WHAT A PRIVILEGE IT IS FOR ME TO BE MODERATING THIS SESSION.

THESE ARE 4 REMARKABLE PEOPLE.

THEY'VE ACHIEVED REMARKABLE THINGS.

AND I AM THINKING BACK TO A PROGRAM

THAT CHIEF JUDGE COLE AND I WERE AT LAST YEAR.

IT WAS ABOUT THE LEGACY OF RECONSTRUCTION.

AND WE HAD PRESENTATIONS BY HISTORIANS,

AND WE HAD PRESENTATIONS BY JUDGES WHO HAD THOUGHT ABOUT

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE 13th, 14th, AND 15th AMENDMENTS.

AND THEN WE HAD SOME PRIVATE MEETINGS

AMONG THE JUDGES, AND AT ONE POINT

IN ONE OF THE PRIVATE MEETINGS,

PEOPLE STARTED TALKING ABOUT THEIR PERSONAL HISTORIES.

AND IT WAS, I THINK, IN MY ENTIRE JUDICIAL CAREER,

IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST MOVING THINGS I'VE EVER SEEN

BECAUSE I LEARNED THINGS ABOUT PEOPLE THAT I DIDN'T KNOW

AND PEOPLE SPOKE WITH TREMENDOUS PASSION

ABOUT THEIR PERSONAL HISTORIES,

BOTH AFRICAN AMERICAN AND WHITE JUDGES

AND LATINO JUDGES.

SO, IT WAS JUST THE EFFECT THAT GROWING UP

IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE RACE MATTERED

AND WHERE PEOPLE'S BACKGROUNDS WERE STRONGLY AFFECTED BY THAT,

HOW IT AFFECTED ALL OF US AS PEOPLE,

AND IT WAS REALLY QUITE COMPELLING.

AND CHIEF JUDGE COLE WAS ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO TOLD HIS STORY

AND I'M GOING TO START WITH HIM,

BOTH BECAUSE OF THAT AND ALSO BECAUSE

WE'RE GOING TO GO IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER

AND HE'S FIRST IN THAT CATEGORY AS WELL.

SO, GUY, LET ME ASK YOU, YOU SAID--

AND I'M GOING TO QUOTE SOMETHING YOU WROTE TO ME--

"PART OF GETTING ME INTO THE LAW

IS TIED TO BIRMINGHAM'S TORTURED HISTORY."

SO, TELL US ABOUT THAT.

COLE: IT WAS REALLY IN THE CRUCIBLE

OF THAT TIME PERIOD FOR ME THAT

AS JUST THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD

THAT I CAME TO HAVE A SENSE FOR WHAT I VIEWED

AS FAIRNESS AND JUSTNESS

AND WHAT'S RIGHT AND WHAT'S NOT RIGHT.

THERE WERE A NUMBER OF KIDS, OF COURSE,

WHO GREW UP ON THE TOP OF THE HILL

AND MANY OF THEM HAVE GONE INTO LAW, MEDICINE, AND OTHER FIELDS.

BUT THERE'S AN ARTICLE BACK IN 2005 IN THE "BIRMINGHAM NEWS"

THAT NOTES, I THINK IT WAS WRITTEN BY

A GUY NAMED JOHN ARCHIBALD, AND IT SAYS SOMETHING LIKE

"JUSTICE ROLLS DOWN FROM THE HILL."

AND IT NOTES THAT AT THAT TIME

THERE WERE 6 PEOPLE FROM BIRMINGHAM IN MY AGE RANGE

WITHIN A 4-BLOCK AREA WHO HAD BECOME

EITHER FEDERAL OR STATE JUDGES.

AND I DON'T KNOW IF THAT IS

UNDER OR ABOVE THE SORT OF NATIONAL AVERAGE,

BUT SOMETHING TELLS ME THAT'S ABOVE.

IT WAS THE AREA WHERE THERE WERE

A NUMBER OF CIVIL RIGHTS LEADERS,

THERE WERE BLACK BUSINESSMEN AND DOCTORS AND DENTISTS,

AND THE LAWYERS WHO WERE THERE IN MANY CASES WERE VERY MUCH

ACTIVISTS IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS ARENA.

ARTHUR SHORES, ABOUT WHOM SEVERAL BOOKS HAVE BEEN WRITTEN,

WAS A LAWYER WHO LIVED A BLOCK FROM ME.

HE WAS MARTIN LUTHER KING'S ALABAMA LAWYER, SO TO SPEAK.

OSCAR ADAMS, FOR ANY OF YOU WHO ARE FROM ALABAMA,

WAS THE FIRST BLACK JUSTICE ON THE ALABAMA SUPREME COURT.

AND THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER LAWYERS ON THE HILL,

AS I CALL IT, WHO WERE JUST

VERY ACTIVE IN CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVITIES.

SO, I GUESS, JEREMY, THAT'S WHERE I GOT MY FIRST START.

IT WAS AN AREA THAT WAS ROCKED,

AS MANY ARTICLES THAT MANY OF YOU HAVE PROBABLY READ INDICATE,

BY BOMBINGS, AND THAT'S HOW IT GOT THE NAME "DYNAMITE HILL."

ARTHUR SHORES' HOUSE WAS BOMBED I THINK 7 TIMES,

AND THEN THE 16th STREET CHURCH BOMBING

THAT KILLED 4 YOUNG GIRLS--

CYNTHIA WESLEY IS ONE OF THOSE GIRLS WHO LIVED NEXT DOOR TO ME.

CAROLE ROBERTSON WAS ANOTHER YOUNG GIRL.

THEY WERE 14 YEARS OLD AT THAT TIME.

BIRMINGHAM'S COME A LONG WAY,

AND I'M VERY PROUD OF ITS PROGRESS AND ITS EVOLUTION.

I DO HAVE ONE OF MY BROTHERS WHO STILL LIVES THERE,

SO I GET BACK TO SEE IT FROM TIME TO TIME.

BUT I THINK THAT'S PART OF THE PATH.

AND I DON'T KNOW IF ANY OF THE 6 OF US WHO BECAME JUDGES

CAN REALLY POINT TO ANY ONE THING ABOUT BIRMINGHAM

THAT SORT OF LED US ON THIS ROAD TOWARD

BECOMING LAWYERS AND JUDGES.

BUT IN THE CONVERSATIONS I'VE HAD WITH A COUPLE OF PEOPLE,

IT WAS JUST BEING A PART OF THAT MOVEMENT AT THAT TIME

THAT SO MANY PEOPLE, BLACK AND WHITE,

HAD TOWARD TRYING TO BRING RACIAL JUSTICE TO BIRMINGHAM.

GREGORY: BOTH PARENTS WORKED IN THE TOBACCO FACTORY.

I WAS THE FIRST PERSON IN MY FAMILY

TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL, LET ALONE TO GO TO COLLEGE,

AND THEN ON TO LAW SCHOOL.

BUT MY PARENTS, THE PATHWAY CLEARLY STARTED WITH THEM.

THEY GAVE ME BROAD SHOULDERS.

AND EVEN THOUGH I LIVED IN

A PARALLEL UNIVERSE, IF YOU WILL,

EVERYTHING WAS SEGREGATED, SEGREGATED SCHOOLS.

I THINK I STARTED SCHOOL BACK IN 1959.

I WAS JUST SO BLESSED

EVEN WITHIN THAT CRUCIBLE OF SEGREGATION

BECAUSE HAD I LIVED SOME 60 MILES

TO THE WEST IN PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY,

THAT WAS THE SAME MONTH THEY STARTED MASSIVE RESISTANCE

AND THERE WERE NO SCHOOLS THERE FOR 5 YEARS

FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS.

SO, I WAS FORTUNATE, BUT I STARTED IN '59,

AND I REMEMBER HAVING OLD BOOKS THAT WERE SO OLD I REMEMBER

THERE WAS BARELY ENOUGH ROOM AT THE BOTTOM

FOR ME TO PUT MY NAME ON, AND I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT THAT.

I SAID, "I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE PREVIOUS OWNERS ARE NOW

"AND I HOPE THEY'RE ALL DOING WELL,

"BUT THANK GOD THAT LITTLE BOY'S NAME WHO WAS ON THE BOTTOM

IS ON THE FOURTH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS,"

AND THAT'S NOT ABOUT ME, THAT'S ABOUT MANY PEOPLE WHO STRUGGLE

AND WHO BELIEVE IN THOSE DAYS WHEN HOPE UNBORN HAD DIED,

THAT SOMEBODY LIKE ME COULD READ THE CONSTITUTION

AND BOOKS ABOUT THE FULLNESS OF THE AMERICAN DREAM

AND ONE DAY I MIGHT BE ABLE TO WALK IN THERE.

BUT THERE WERE SOME DIFFICULTIES.

I REMEMBER IN THE PARK THERE WERE BENCHES,

AND AFRICAN AMERICANS, BASICALLY, JUST YOU KEEP GOING.

IF YOU WENT IN, YOU DIDN'T SIT DOWN.

BUT FINALLY WHEN THE LAW SAYS YOU HAD TO,

THE BENCHES WERE REMOVED SO THAT NO ONE COULD SIT DOWN.

AND I THINK ABOUT THAT IN TERMS OF [INAUDIBLE]

THOUGHT ABOUT THAT, THAT PEOPLE HAVE

A WAY OF FINDING COMMON GROUND,

AND ANOTHER IRONY IN THE SENSE THAT

DIDN'T HAVE BENCHES BUT NOW I SIT ON A BENCH.

YEAH, BUT I THINK ABOUT THAT SO MANY PEOPLE

COULD'VE BEEN MANY THINGS.

I TAKE SOME PAUSE WHEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT BEING A CREDIT

OR AN ANOMALY OF RACE OR OF PEOPLE.

NOT AT ALL.

THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE MUCH SMARTER THAN I AM.

IT'S JUST BECAUSE OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES

DIDN'T GIVE THE OPPORTUNITIES AND I JUST FEEL SO FORTUNATE.

AND LASTLY, I THINK ABOUT A PATHWAY.

I WENT TO VIRGINIA STATE COLLEGE,

WHICH IS A HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE IN PETERSBURG,

AND MY MOTHER, WHEN SHE WAS 16 YEARS OLD,

SHE WAS A DORMITORY MAID IN THAT SCHOOL,

AND I THINK ABOUT THE TIME--

MY MOM WOULD'VE BEEN A GREAT LAWYER.

SHE COULD ARGUE HER CASE, NO QUESTION,

AND BACK IT UP, TOO, MANY TIMES, LITERALLY.

BUT I THOUGHT ABOUT SHE DIDN'T CURSE THE DARKNESS,

INSTEAD SHE LIT A CANDLE,

AND I'M PART OF THAT CANDLE, AND MY JOB I FEEL THAT

WHEREVER I AM TO LIGHT THAT CANDLE FOR ALL PEOPLE--

BLACK, WHITE, BROWN, YELLOW-- WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE,

THAT THE FULLNESS OF JUSTICE AND WHAT

CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY IS CAN BE INFLUENTIAL.

JOHNSON: MY PARENTS ARE FROM

ASCENSION PARISH, DONALDSONVILLE,

AS YOU SAID, AND A RURAL PARISH

WITHOUT A WHOLE LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES,

SO A LOT OF FOLKS WOUND UP IN NEW ORLEANS.

AND I WENT TO SCHOOL THERE

AND, OF COURSE, THE SCHOOLS WERE SEGREGATED.

WHEN I GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL IN 1960,

OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS WERE STILL SEGREGATED.

AND I CAN STILL RECALL GETTING ON A BUS

ON ST. CLAUDE AVENUE AND PASSING THE SCHOOL EVERY DAY,

AND OUR TEACHER HAD ANNOUNCED BROWN AGAINST BOARD OF EDUCATION

WHEN I WAS IN, I GUESS, MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND I SAID,

"WELL, YOU KNOW, I'LL GET A CHANCE TO GO TO THAT SCHOOL,"

BUT IT DIDN'T HAPPEN BECAUSE IN LOUISIANA,

AS IN EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE SOUTH,

WE DESEGREGATED THE SYSTEM FROM THE GROUND UP,

MEANING FROM FIRST GRADE, I THINK PROBABLY

ARKANSAS CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL IN ARKANSAS

MAY HAVE BEEN THE ONLY STATE THAT DESEGREGATED

FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL FROM THE TOP DOWN.

GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL IN NEW ORLEANS

AND HAD THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND SPELMAN COLLEGE

IN ATLANTA ON A SCHOLARSHIP.

I WOULD'VE GONE TO DILLARD OR XAVIER, PROBABLY,

AND BEEN A SCHOOLTEACHER IF THE FOLK FROM SPELMAN COLLEGE

HADN'T SHOWN UP AND OFFERED ME THE SCHOLARSHIP.

SO, I WOUND UP IN ATLANTA FOR COLLEGE.

IT BROADENED MY VISION, HAD A CHANCE TO MEET HOWARD MOORE

AND SOME OTHER PROMINENT BLACK LAWYERS

AND HAD A CHANCE TO WORK FOR THEM,

SUMMERS WITH THE LEGAL DEFENSE FUND.

AND THAT'S WHAT I DID FIRST,

WORKING IN SCHOOL DESEGREGATION CASES

AROUND THE SOUTH IN MISSISSIPPI AND BIRMINGHAM;

MONTGOMERY; GADSDEN, ALABAMA; AND TENNESSEE.

AND MY JOB WAS TO SIT THERE ON THE FRONT PORCH

AND CONVINCE PARENTS THAT THEY SHOULD SEND THEIR FIRST GRADERS

TO THE NEWLY DESEGREGATED SCHOOLS.

AND EVERYBODY KNEW THE HISTORY OF VIOLENCE,

AND SO I'VE GOT TO BE PERSUASIVE BECAUSE I'M TELLING SOMEONE,

"NO, WE REALLY--THE BROWN AGAINST BOARD OF EDUCATION

"DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING UNLESS WE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS LAWSUIT,

THIS JUDGMENT, AND THIS LITIGATION."

AND SO, I'VE GOT TO CONVINCE THE PARENT

THAT THEY NEED TO SEND THEIR CHILD INTO WHAT THEY KNOW

MAY EVEN BE A VIOLENT SITUATION.

AND MAYBE THAT'S WHERE I STARTED THE PERSUASIVE SKILLS.

I DID THAT SUMMERS AND IN A WHOLE LOT OF SOUTHERN STATES.

STEWART: I GREW UP IN THAT PART OF THE STATE.

IT WAS A VERY RACIST AREA OF THE STATE.

I GREW UP WITH AN ALL-BLACK HIGH SCHOOL.

IT WAS THE KIND OF PLACE ONCE I LEFT

I REALLY NEVER WANTED TO COME BACK THERE.

BUT I GREW UP.

WHEN I WAS 4 YEARS OLD, MY DAD WAS A LEAD PLAINTIFF

IN A CLASS ACTION TO GET A NEGRO SUBDIVISION

FOR US THERE IN SHREVEPORT, AND CONSTANCE BAKER MOTLEY,

WHO LATER BECAME THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN FEDERAL JUDGE,

WAS A HOUSING SPECIALIST WITH THE LDF,

AND SO SHE CAME TO SHREVEPORT AND REPRESENTED MY DAD

IN A CLASS TO TRY TO GET THE HOUSE MOVING FORWARD.

WE NEVER GOT THE HOUSE DUE TO A VARIETY OF RACIAL ISSUES,

INCLUDING THE POLICE JURY AND OTHER PEOPLE

WHO PASSED AN ORDINANCE THAT THEY COULDN'T HOOK UTILITIES UP

TO THE SUBDIVISION AND SO ON AND SO FORTH

AND A WHOLE LOT OF OTHER MACHINATIONS

THAT I LEARNED ABOUT EARLIER.

BUT THE POINT IS, IS THAT MY DAD IS 90, STILL ALIVE,

WAS A LETTER CARRIER.

HE CARRIED THE MAIL BEFORE THEY RODE

IN THE TRUCK, IN THE JEEP.

HE CARRIED THE MAIL UP AND DOWN THE HILLS,

BUT HE WORKED PART TIME AT NIGHT

SELLING AIR CONDITIONERS AND ALL THAT.

MY MOTHER WAS A DOMESTIC WORKER.

BOTH OF OUR PARENTS BELIEVED

THAT EDUCATION WAS A GREAT EQUALIZER.

AND SO, WHEN WE WERE YOUNG,

THEY TAUGHT US TO READ, TO STUDY,

[INAUDIBLE] BOUGHT ME A "TIME" MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION

WHEN I WAS IN FIFTH GRADE.

IT IS UNBROKEN EVEN TO NOW THAT I STILL TAKE THE MAGAZINE.

BUT HE TAUGHT US TO READ.

WE ALWAYS HAD A LIBRARY CARD.

YOU HAD TO READ, YOU CUT THE TV OFF.

IT JUST WAS THAT.

AND SO, 1967, WHEN I GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL,

WAS THE FIRST YEAR OF INTEGRATION

IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

BUT IT WAS A TUMULTUOUS TIME.

I CHOSE TO STAY IN MY HIGH SCHOOL.

I WAS THE BATTALION COMMANDER OF THE JUNIOR ROTC THERE,

SO I HAD LEADERSHIP POSITION.

I GRADUATED AND WENT TO AN ALL-BLACK, AN HBCU,

DILLARD UNIVERSITY IN NEW ORLEANS.

IT WAS THE TIME OF THE VIETNAM WAR.

I HAD A LOW DRAFT NUMBER

AND A VERY MEAN, RACIST DRAFT BOARD.

AND SO, THEY MADE IT VERY CLEAR

THAT THEY WOULD GET TO ME IN DUE COURSE.

IF YOU WERE WHITE, YOU HAD OTHER OPTIONS--NATIONAL GUARD

AND ALL THAT SORT OF THING,

BUT IF YOU WERE BLACK, YOU JUST DIDN'T.

AND SO, KNOWING INEVITABLY THAT AT SOME JUNCTURE

I WOULD PROBABLY GET DRAFTED, ET CETERA.

BUT WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, I REMEMBER WHEN THE STATS

WERE UP THERE ABOUT THE LAW SCHOOLS THIS MORNING,

THAT $100,000 WORTH OF DEBT, SO I WENT TO A PRIVATE SCHOOL,

BUT MY DAD ALWAYS TOLD US,

"DON'T WORRY ABOUT GOING TO PUBLIC--

"YOU GO WHERE YOU WANT TO GO.

YOU DO YOUR PART, AND I'LL DO MINE."

AND SO, HE NEVER TOLD US WE HAD TO GO

TO PUBLIC SCHOOL TO SAVE TUITION.

HE SAID, "YOU GO WHERE YOU CAN GO GET THE BEST EDUCATION."

I WENT TO PRIVATE UNDERGRAD, PRIVATE LAW SCHOOL,

HAD ALL THAT DEBT.

WE HAD PLENTY OF LOANS, SCHOLARSHIPS, WORK STUDY,

ALL THOSE PACKAGES AND ALL THAT.

SO, I NEVER HAD A PREMIUM SUMMER JOB.

WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE I WORKED IN BAYFIELD INDUSTRIES

MAKING MUNITIONS, THESE MUNITIONS IN A FACTORY,

AND OTHER KIND OF MENIAL SUMMER JOB,

BUT I WORKED BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU HAD TO DO

TO GET AN UNDERGRAD.

SO, WHEN I WENT TO LAW SCHOOL, BECAUSE OF THE DRAFT NUMBER,

I HAD THE SPECTER OF PERHAPS GETTING DRAFTED OUT OF SCHOOL.

I HAVE AN OLDER BROTHER WHO ACTUALLY

WENT TO LAW SCHOOL FIRST BUT HE WAS DRAFTED OUT OF LAW SCHOOL.

HE JOINED THE NAVY, WENT TO OCS.

HE LATER RETIRED AS A NAVY CAPTAIN WITH 26 YEARS IN JAG.

I DIDN'T WANT TO BE DRAFTED OUT OF SCHOOL.

AND SO, THE ARMY HAD COME UP WITH A BRAND-NEW PROGRAM,

TWO-YEAR ROTC, BUT IT WAS FOR UNDERGRADS.

BUT BECAUSE I HAD BEEN BATTALION COMMANDER

IN THE JUNIOR ROTC IN HIGH SCHOOL,

THEY GAVE ME AN EXCEPTION TO BE IN THE ROTC AT LOYOLA.

SO, I WENT TO EVIDENCE CLASS,

SITTING IN A GREEN UNIFORM WITH 150 PEOPLE IN THE CLASS,

WITH THE PROFESSOR ABLE TO POINT ME OUT TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

BUT I DID ONE SUMMER AT FORT KNOX, KENTUCKY,

ONE OF THE WORST SUMMERS OF MY LIFE,

AND I DID ANOTHER SUMMER AT FORT RILEY, KANSAS,

ANOTHER WORST SUMMER OF MY LIFE.

SO, I DIDN'T HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE THE KIND OF JOBS

THAT A LOT OF LAW--YOU KNOW, WORK IN SUMMER AT LAW FIRMS.

I WAS DOING IT.

BUT BEING IN THE MILITARY WAS ONE OF

THE GREATEST EXPERIENCES THAT I HAD.

SO, WHEN I PASSED THE BAR EXAM,

I HAD HEAVY PRESSURE TO PASS THE FIRST TIME

BECAUSE I HAD AN ENTRY DATE TO GO INTO THE ARMY WAITING ON ME.

I PASSED, WENT TO THE JAG SCHOOL.

AND SO, I SERVED 3 YEARS AS A CAPTAIN IN JAG CORPS,

ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS THAT HAPPENED TO ME.

INSTANT RESPONSIBILITY, REPRESENTING CLIENTS,

DOING COURT-MARTIALS, AND I LOVED TRIAL WORK.

AND SO, THAT'S WHEN MY LOVE FOR THE TRIAL WORK BEGAN.

GREAT RESPONSIBILITY.

GREAT DISCIPLINE.

I WOULDN'T TAKE ANYTHING-- I DON'T KNOW,

I THOUGHT I WOULDN'T TAKE ANYTHING FROM

FORT KNOX AND FORT RILEY, BUT I'M NOT TOO SURE

I WANT TO GO FOR THAT BECAUSE I HAD SOME

MEAN DRILL SERGEANTS AND ALL THAT.

BUT THE MILITARY REALLY INSTILLED DISCIPLINE,

ORGANIZATION, RESPONSIBILITY, ET CETERA,

AND I REALLY THINK IT WAS A PLATFORM

FOR A LOT OF THE THINGS THAT I'VE DONE SINCE

BECAUSE BEING IN THAT ENVIRONMENT,

THERE WAS NO TIME TO BE SCARED,

YOU'VE GOT PLENTY OF RESPONSIBILITY,

YOU JUST KIND OF GOT TO DO IT.

AND IT REALLY SHOWED ME THAT THOUGH GRADUATING

FROM AN ALL-BLACK SCHOOL WITH HAND-ME-DOWN BOOKS, ET CETERA,

THE CONFIDENCE THAT THE TEACHERS AND OTHER STUDENTS INSTILL IN ME

THAT YOU CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT.

THAT CONFIDENCE JUST ALLOWED ME TO TRY ANYTHING, TO DO THAT.

I SPENT 3 YEARS IN JAG, GOT OUT,

DIDN'T WANT TO GO HOME BECAUSE OF THE PAST,

AND I ENDED UP, THOUGH, WORKING IN ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE.

I LATER WAS AN AUSA, TRIED CASES,

AND THAT WAS MY VENTURE INTO FEDERAL COURT.

LOVED TRYING CASES IN FEDERAL COURT

AND REALLY APPEARING BEFORE SOME WONDERFUL FEDERAL JUDGES.

AND SO, I SAID, "ONE OF THESE DAYS, MAYBE I'LL GET A CHANCE

TO BE A JUDGE AND ALL THAT."

BUT LONG STORY SHORT, I WAS ELECTED A STATE TRIAL JUDGE

WHEN I WAS 35 YEARS OLD.

I WAS THE FIRST BLACK ELECTED TO THAT COURT.

SPENT 7 YEARS ON THE TRIAL BENCH,

THE ABSOLUTE BEST PERIOD OF MY PROFESSIONAL LIFE,

TRYING CASES WITH LAWYERS, AND I LOVED THE TRIALS,

AND I THINK THOSE YEARS AS A TRIAL JUDGE

HELPED MAKE ME BE A BETTER APPELLATE JUDGE.

I SPENT 3 YEARS ON THE APPELLATE COURT

BEFORE COMING TO THE FEDERAL COURT.

AND THERE WAS ANOTHER PERSON FOR A SEAT ON THE FEDERAL COURT,

BUT THE SENIOR SENATOR WAS FROM SHREVEPORT,

AND YOU GET ONE OF THESE CALLS THAT SAY, "THERE'S A SEAT OPEN.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A FEDERAL JUDGE?"

"HUH? YEAH. REALLY?"

SO, I NEVER HAD--I WAS QUALIFIED, MOVED THROUGH,

99-TO-NOTHING, NONE OF ALL THESE QUESTIONS,

NO LITMUS TEST, NO NOTHING, AND SO,

STRAIGHT ON THROUGH THE DEAL AND HERE I AM.

JOHNSON: YOU KNOW, YOU CAN'T FOCUS ON THE RACISM.

LIKE I SAID, I WAS AT LSU, 1965 TO 1968.

THAT WAS THE SUMMER THAT-- WELL, THE SPRING, REALLY,

THAT DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING WAS ASSASSINATED.

AND SO, THEY ALWAYS WANT TO KNOW,

"WELL, TELL US SOME OF YOUR LSU STORIES."

BUT, YOU KNOW, I'M NOT GOING TO DREDGE UP ALL--

I DON'T REALLY NEED TO FEED ON RACISM

FROM 40 YEARS AGO OR SLIGHTS OR--

MY FOCUS WHEN I TALK ABOUT LSU,

I'M GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT SOMEBODY

WHO WAS THERE TO HELP ME.

I'M GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT MARGARET O'MEARA,

WHO MADE SURE I HAD NOTES.

I MEAN, THE FRAT BOYS HAD THEIR POOP SHEETS

AND I HAD EVERY NOTE I NEEDED

BECAUSE MARGARET O'MEARA MADE SURE I DID.

AND SO, YOU FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE

AND YOU MOVE FORWARD BECAUSE IF YOU KEEP--

AND ONE OF MY PROFESSORS TOLD ME THERE,

"DON'T BE A MARTYR OR A VICTIM.

JUST DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO AND MOVE FORWARD."

AND YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE HOPE.

AND IF YOU COME FROM A FAMILY OF FAITH--

I COME FROM A FAMILY OF BAPTIST PREACHERS,

MY GRANDFATHER WAS SUPERINTENDENT

OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL, AND WE ALL WENT TO CHURCH,

WE'RE CHURCH PEOPLE, AND SO WE'RE PEOPLE OF FAITH.

AND, YOU KNOW, WE BELIEVE IN AMERICA.

GREGORY: WHERE I AM, I'M THE ONLY JUDGE

IN THE FOURTH CIRCUIT HOME RICHMOND,

AND THAT BUILDING I'M IN WAS BUILT IN 1858,

AND IT WAS THE TREASURY OF THE CONFEDERACY,

AND [INAUDIBLE] DAVIS HAD AN OFFICE IN THAT BUILDING,

AND I LOOK OUT THE WINDOW IN THE BACKSIDE--

JUDGE TRAXLER KNOWS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT--

BANK STREET, AND YOU SEE THE CAPITOL

THAT WAS DESIGNED BY THOMAS JEFFERSON.

AND YOU SEE THESE TWO BUILDINGS SPEAK TO EACH OTHER ACROSS TIME.

AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT SORT OF ANCHORS ME

IN THE SENSE THAT WHAT DR. KING TALKED ABOUT,

THE MORAL ARC OF THE UNIVERSE, IT BENDS TOWARD JUSTICE.

I MEAN, SO THOSE ARE THE KIND OF THINGS THAT TETHER ME.

AND ONE THING I'D JUST SAY ABOUT THE COURT.

THE FIRST TIME I WENT INTO THE BUILDING I'M IN NOW

WAS IN 1980 OR SO.

I WAS WORKING AT A BIG FIRM,

AND THEY HAD THE LAWYERS COME DOWN

AND DO TRIAL WORK TO GET EXPERIENCE,

SO I WAS COURT APPOINTED TO REPRESENT

THIS WOMAN FROM THE SOUTH, A WHITE WOMAN.

I DIDN'T KNOW HER, SHE DIDN'T KNOW ME.

SO I WENT DOWN THERE AND I FIGURED OUT WHO SHE WAS

AND I WALKED UP AND INTRODUCED MYSELF.

I SAID, "I'M YOUR LAWYER."

HER SPIRIT DROPPED FROM HER EYES TO HER FEET PRECIPITOUSLY. SHOO!

IT WAS LIKE, "OH, MY GOODNESS.

"THE LAWYER THEY APPOINTED ME.

"I MEAN, JUST LOCK ME UP NOW.

JUST GO AHEAD. WE DON'T NEED A TRIAL."

BUT THE POINT WAS I HAD AN ASSIGNMENT,

AND THAT'S WHAT MY PARENTS TAUGHT ME--

"YOU HAVE AN ASSIGNMENT, AND IT CANNOT BE CHANGED

"BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE DON'T SEE WHO YOU ARE

AND UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE."

THAT'S WHAT ANCHORS ME.

LONG STORY SHORT, WE HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE.

SHE WROTE ME A WONDERFUL LETTER.

BUT NOW I THINK ABOUT IT, IN THAT SAME LOBBY,

MY NAME IS ON THE ROSTER AS THE CHIEF JUDGE OF THE COURT,

BUT THAT'S BECAUSE PEOPLE NEVER GAVE UP AND FOUGHT HARD,

AND THAT'S, JUDGE FOGEL, WHAT KEEPS ME ANCHORED IN THAT SENSE.

COLE: AS WITH SOME OF MY COLLEAGUES HERE,

FOR THE PERIOD I LIVED IN BIRMINGHAM,

I ATTENDED FROM FIRST THROUGH SIXTH GRADE

AN ALL-BLACK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

WE HAD HAND-ME-DOWN BOOKS. THEY WERE,

AS I THINK MAYBE JUDGE STEWART SAID, TATTERED AND TORN,

AND MANY PEOPLE THAT USED THEM BEFORE WE HAD.

BUT OUR TEACHERS WERE COMMITTED AND ABSOLUTELY DEDICATED,

ALL BLACK TEACHERS, AND THEY WERE DISCIPLINED

IN TERMS OF INSTRUCTION AND VERY MUCH COMMITTED

TO THEIR STUDENTS LEARNING WHAT WE NEEDED TO LEARN.

SO, I FEEL AS THOUGH I GOT A GREAT EDUCATION

AT WILKERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN BIRMINGHAM.

AND THIS MAY BE TRUE FOR A LOT OF US--

IF YOU GOT IN TROUBLE AT SCHOOL, YOU GET IN TROUBLE AT HOME,

BECAUSE THE TEACHER WOULD CALL THE HOUSE,

SO YOU GET IN TROUBLE TWICE.

THE TEACHERS WERE THAT KIND OF COMMITTED TO OUR SUCCESS.

UNLIKE MY COLLEAGUES, I--

MY PARENTS MOVED TO NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT

WHEN I WAS--JUST BEFORE HIGH SCHOOL

AND I ATTENDED PREDOMINANTLY WHITE SCHOOLS

FROM THAT POINT FORWARD AND WENT OFF TO

A PREDOMINANTLY WHITE UNIVERSITY, TUFTS UNIVERSITY,

IN 1968 OUTSIDE OF BOSTON.

YOU MAY RECALL THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT

DR. KING AND ROBERT KENNEDY WERE ASSASSINATED,

YOU GOT THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION IN CHICAGO,

AND ALL THE VIOLENCE.

OUR SOCIETY IN GENERAL

WAS IN TURMOIL WITH THE RIOTS, THE DEMONSTRATIONS ON CAMPUSES.

I THINK UP UNTIL 1966, '67,

CAMPUSES HAD BEEN RELATIVELY CALM PLACES,

AS MUCH AS THEY CAN BE WITH 18- TO 22-YEAR-OLDS.

WHEN I ARRIVED AT TUFTS UNIVERSITY IN 1968,

THERE WERE, I THINK, ABOUT 10 BLACK STUDENTS THERE

AND MY CLASS HAD 49.

AND IT WAS A VERY CHALLENGING TIME FOR THE UNIVERSITY

TO ABSORB THAT MANY BLACK STUDENTS,

MANY OF WHOM CAME FROM VERY

ECONOMICALLY DEPRESSED BACKGROUNDS,

VERY BRIGHT STUDENTS AND IN THE MIDST OF WHAT HAD BEEN

A MUCH MORE HOMOGENOUS ENVIRONMENT.

JUDGE ERIC WASHINGTON, WHO'S HERE,

FOLLOWED ME A COUPLE YEARS LATER,

AND WE WERE JUST SAYING LAST NIGHT THAT IN SOME WAYS

WE FEEL THAT WE HELPED TEACH THE UNIVERSITY

AS MUCH AS THEY TAUGHT US.

BUT I LEARNED A LOT THERE ABOUT RESILIENCE

BECAUSE I THINK PROBABLY IF I HAD ATTENDED

A HISTORICALLY BLACK UNIVERSITY AS MY PARENTS DID,

AND AS THEY WANTED ME TO DO INITIALLY,

IT MAY HAVE BEEN A LITTLE BIT MORE OF A NURTURING ENVIRONMENT,

BUT WE HAD TO BE RESILIENT,

THOSE 49 OF US WHO ARRIVED AT THE TUFTS CAMPUS

IN SEPTEMBER OF 1968.

FOGEL: WE'VE HEARD ABOUT YOUR LIFE CHALLENGES

AND I THINK THAT REALLY SAYS A LOT ABOUT

WHO EACH OF YOU IS AND HAS BECOME AS A PERSON.

BUT IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE OR IN YOUR LEGAL CAREER,

IF YOU WANT TO BE A LITTLE BIT BROADER,

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST

PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGE YOU'VE FACED?

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST THING YOU'VE HAD TO DEAL WITH?

JOHNSON: WHAT I'M STRUGGLING WITH NOW IS THE FACT

THAT LOUISIANA IS NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION

IN TERMS OF THE RATES OF INCARCERATION.

WE HAVE THE PEW TRUST INVOLVED IN THE STATE NOW

ASSISTING US WITH THIS AND I HAVE REACHED OUT

TO WILLIAM HUBBARD AND OTHER FOLK

TO TALK ABOUT INCARCERATION.

IN FACT, WHEN HUBBARD WAS PRESIDENT OF THE ABA,

HE CAME DOWN TO LOUISIANA TO WORK WITH US

AND TELL US WHAT THEY'VE BEEN DOING IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

BUT WE INCARCERATE MORE PEOPLE THAN CHINA, IRAN,

AND 100 OTHER NATIONS THAT WE THINK ARE WORSE THAN WE ARE.

THE UNITED STATES INCARCERATES MORE PEOPLE THAN ANYBODY ELSE

AND LOUISIANA IS NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION.

TO BE A CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE LOUISIANA SUPREME COURT

AND HAVE A STATISTIC LIKE THAT, THAT'S NOTHING TO BE PROUD OF,

AND SO THAT'S MORE OF A BURDEN TO ME THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

AND SO, IF YOU ASK ME WHAT MY CHALLENGE IS,

MY CHALLENGE IS BETWEEN NOW AND 2020,

WHEN I LEAVE THE COURT.

I SAID TO SECRETARY LEBLANC,

WHO'S SECRETARY OF DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS,

"I'D LIKE TO BE NUMBER TWO OR NUMBER 3.

I DON'T WANT TO BE NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION."

AND IT'S A BURDEN TO BE A PART OF THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM THIS LONG

AND YOU TALK WITH YOUNG BLACK MEN

AND THEY TALK ABOUT THE DISPARITIES AND THE INJUSTICES

AND I'M A PART OF IT.

JUST LOOK AT THE STATISTICS FROM OUR WEBSITE,

DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, IT'S ALL THERE.

MOSTLY AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN,

AND WE'VE LOCKED THEM UP LONG TERM,

SOMETIMES WITH MULTIPLE BILLING THEM

WITH SMALL AMOUNTS OF DRUGS, A FEW MARIJUANA CIGARETTES

[INAUDIBLE],

AND SOMETIMES YOU STOP THEM, SHAKE THEM DOWN,

THEY'RE RIDING A BICYCLE OR A COUPLE OF THEM

STANDING ON THE CORNER, THEY'VE GOT A MARIJUANA CIGARETTE.

SO, I GUESS THAT IS MY CHALLENGE.

I FEEL MY COMMITMENT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT FUNDAMENTAL FAIRNESS

AND I WANT TO LEAVE A SYSTEM THAT'S A LITTLE BIT IMPROVED

IN TERMS OF THAT FAIRNESS ISSUE.

STEWART: BEING CHIEF JUDGE IS A BIG DEAL

TO A LOT OF PEOPLE AND UNTIL YOU'RE THE CHIEF JUDGE,

YOU DON'T REALLY REALIZE ALL THAT GOES WITH IT.

I THINK THE THREE OF US WHO ARE CHIEF KNOW,

I SIT THE SAME NUMBER OF TIMES AS ALL MY COLLEAGUES,

7 TIMES A YEAR, SO I STILL HEAR CASES, ET CETERA,

AND YET AT LEAST 75% OF MY TIME

IS DEALING WITH NON-CASE-RELATED MATTERS.

AND SO, I HAVE A HUGE CIRCUIT.

TEXAS IS A BIG CUSTOMER.

I HAVE 9 JUDICIAL DISTRICTS,

WHICH MEANS I HAVE 9 CHIEF DISTRICT JUDGES.

I HAVE 105 COURTHOUSES, 3,218 TOTAL SUPPORT PEOPLE IN IT.

IT'S A HUGE OPERATION, VERY GEOGRAPHICALLY DISPERSED.

AND ONCE YOU BECOME CHIEF JUDGE,

YOU REALIZE NOT ONLY HOW EXPANSIVE IT IS

BUT ALL THE ISSUES THAT BUBBLE UP

TO THE CHIEF JUDGE TO DEAL WITH.

AND SO, MANAGING THE TIME ELEMENT

IN TERMS OF DEALING WITH ALL THAT

AS WELL AS THE RELATIONSHIPS AND SO FORTH ON MY OWN COURT,

THE 17 JUDGES ON MY COURT, BUT IT'S MORE THE CHIEF JUDGE.

A LOT OF WHAT WE DO DEALS NOT WITH THE FIFTH CIRCUIT

BUT IT'S WITH PRESIDING OVER THE JUDICIAL COUNCIL,

IT'S BEING A PARTICIPANT IN THE JUDICIAL CONFERENCE

OF THE UNITED STATES, IT'S SERVING ON COMMITTEES,

IT'S GOING OUT INTO THE CIRCUIT,

IT'S GOING TO THE BORDER, IT'S DEALING WITH ISSUES

THAT THE DISTRICT COURTS HAVE.

AND SO, THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS THAT BUBBLE UP,

IT'S A 24/7 CONSTANCY THAT WHEN YOU'RE A REGULAR CIRCUIT JUDGE

YOU DON'T SEE THAT.

YOU JUST DON'T.

YOU DEAL WITH YOUR CASES.

BUT ONCE YOU BECOME CHIEF, IT'S THERE BIG TIME.

SO, EVEN BEING HERE--I DOUBT THE THREE OF US WHILE HERE,

WE'VE BEEN SITTING BACK THERE MANAGING.

WE'VE BEEN LISTENING TO WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON

BUT WE HAVE LITERALLY BEEN-- I'VE BEEN ON THE PHONE

WITH THE CIRCUIT EXECUTIVE THIS MORNING.

ROGER AND I ARE TALKING.

SO, IT'S A FULL TILT.

AND SO, IT'S A CHALLENGE TO MANAGE THE EXPECTATIONS,

TO DEAL WITH THE VARIOUS CONSTITUENCIES

THAT ARE INVOLVED IN TERMS OF THE DISTRICT JUDGES,

YET AT THE SAME TIME YOU HAVE A HUGE COLLECTION

OF EXTREMELY SMART...

TAUT EGO COLLEAGUES.

FOGEL: CHOOSE YOUR WORDS CAREFULLY.

STEWART: I AM.

WHEN YOU GET ROOMS FULL OF VERY, VERY SMART PEOPLE,

FINISHED NUMBER ONE IN THEIR CLASS,

NEVER BEEN WRONG ONCE IN THEIR LIFE,

AND WHEN YOU'VE GOT TO MANAGE THE DISCUSSIONS, THE EGOS,

BUT YET TRY TO KEEP THE RELATIONSHIPS

AND TRY TO DO IT AS EVEN-HANDEDLY AS YOU CAN,

THAT IS A CHALLENGE ON AN ONGOING BASIS.

COLE: BEING CHIEF IS PROBABLY MY BIGGEST

PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGE.

IT WAS TOUGH BECOMING A PARTNER IN A LAW FIRM

THAT HAD NEVER HAD A BLACK PARTNER BEFORE.

THERE WAS A LOT OF PRESSURE I FELT ON ME TO SUCCEED.

I DIDN'T WANT TO FAIL.

THERE WERE BLACK ASSOCIATES IN THE FIRM

WHO WERE COMING UP THROUGH THE RANKS,

AND THE FIRM HAD ALWAYS BEEN EMINENTLY FAIR TO ME AND SAID,

"IF YOU EARN THE PRIVILEGE OF BECOMING A PARTNER, YOU WILL,

BUT IT WILL BE IRRESPECTIVE OF RACE."

AND THAT'S HOW I VIEWED IT.

I TOOK THEM AT THEIR WORD AND THEY WERE TRUE TO THEIR WORD

AND BECAME A PARTNER THERE AND ENJOYED IT.

BUT THAT WAS A CHALLENGE BACK IN THE EARLY 1980s.

STEWART: I THINK THE BEST PART OF THE JOB

WE HAVE AS A FEDERAL JUDGE ARE THE LAW CLERKS THAT WE EMPLOY.

I'VE HAD 74 LAW CLERKS, WHO KNOWS HOW MANY INTERNS,

BUT I TRY TO MENTION TO THEM AND IMPRESS UPON THEM

BECAUSE I BELIEVE THERE'S ONLY SO MUCH

ME OR ROGER BURNETT OR GUY CAN DO.

BUT OUR OBLIGATION IS TO PLANT SOME SEEDS

IN THOSE LAW CLERKS AND YOUNG LAWYERS

BECAUSE THEY NEED TO BE THE AMBASSADORS

FOR THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RULE OF LAW,

THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE JUDICIARY,

SOLVING A LOT OF THESE INTRACTABLE PROBLEMS

THAT WE CAN'T DO.

SO, WHILE BEING CHIEF JUDGE HAS ITS POTHOLES,

IT IS A POSITION OF TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITY TO DO GOOD.

GREGORY: BUT IN THE END, IT'S NOT THE VICTORIES,

IT'S THE STRUGGLE THAT BINDS US.

AND I THINK THAT STRUGGLE IS ONE THAT WE ALL DO

WITH--IN ESSENCE WITH ETHNICS, WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE,

OR GENDER, WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE.

AS AMERICANS WE STRUGGLE, BUT HOPEFULLY THIS IDEAL

THAT WE STILL TETHER OURSELVES TO IT.

SO, I THINK THE UNION IS HOPEFUL.

AND, JUDGE FOGEL, YOU KNOW WHERE THE HOPE

CAME THE MOST FOR ME?

I WILL SAY THIS, IN TERMS OF

HAVING A GLIMPSE OF SOMETHING,

A LIGHT THAT NO DARKNESS COULD OBSCURE,

AND THAT WAS WHEN I WAS 10 YEARS OLD,

IF I CAN JUST FAST FORWARD, AND I'M NOT GOING

TO TELL YOU HOW IT HAPPENED, BUT JUST REMEMBER

THAT IT WAS STUPIDITY ON STEROIDS.

BUT I INJURED MY EYE WHEN I WAS AT HOME ALONE.

MY MOM CAME AND SHE SAID, "WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU, BOY?"

I TRIED TO HIDE IT FROM HER AND I WAS TEARING,

BUT IT REALLY WASN'T TEARS.

BUT ANYWAY, LONG STORY SHORT,

FINALLY SHE TAKES ME TO THE HOSPITAL, THE ER,

THEY LOOK AT MY EYE, AND THEY'RE ABOUT TO RELEASE ME

AND SAY, "HE'S FINE. GO HOME,"

BUT IT JUST SO HAPPENED THAT A YOUNG WHITE OPHTHALMOLOGIST

WAS COMING THROUGH, AND I DON'T KNOW WHETHER HE HAD

JUST FINISHED A LONG SHIFT OF 16 HOURS OR WHATEVER,

BUT HE SAID, "LET ME SEE THAT BOY'S EYE."

AND HE LOOKED AT ME AND HE SAID, "HIS EYEBALL IS CRACKED.

HE'LL BE BLIND IF HE DOESN'T HAVE SURGERY SOON."

AND THE NURSE LOOKED AT HIM AND THEN SHE SAID,

"THERE'S NO ROOM FOR HIM."

AND HE LOOKED AT HER AND SAID,

"LISTEN, THIS BOY IS GOING INTO SURGERY AT MIDNIGHT,

AND YOU BETTER HAVE A PLACE FOR HIM."

AND THE NEXT MORNING, I WOKE UP, MY MOM AND DAD AT MY BEDSIDE,

AND THERE WERE 7 OTHER EMPTY BEDS IN THAT BIG ROOM.

THEY HAD RUN OUT OF ROOM ON THE SIDE DESIGNATED FOR ME.

THAT'S WHAT GIVES ME HOPE, THAT YOUNG WHITE OPHTHALMOLOGIST

AT 10 YEARS OLD GAVE ME THE GLANCE OF A LIGHT

THAT NO DARKNESS CAN OBSCURE.

AND EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE A LONG WAYS TO GO

AND MANY MILES BEFORE WE SLEEP, AS FROST MIGHT SAY,

I THINK WE HAVE THE FRAMEWORK.

EVEN THOUGH OUR FOUNDERS DIDN'T LIVE IT

BUT THEY GAVE A MATRIX FOR WHICH WE MIGHT LIVE THROUGH THAT.

AND I BELIEVE THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE OK,

BUT THAT'S GOING TO BE SOME DIFFICULT DAYS AHEAD,

BUT I HAVE A LOT OF HOPE THAT WE WILL.

FOGEL: THANK YOU. YES.
