SHARKS SPOTTED NEAR THE CEMENT
SHIP IN CAPITOLA.

LIFEGUARD, JUNIOR GUARDS THAT
WAS CANCELLED.
THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME WE HEARD
ABOUT IT BEING SUCH A BIG THING.

HERE FOR QUITE SOME TIME.
I DON'T GO IN THE WATER EARLY IN
THE MORNING OR FEEDING TIME IN
THE EVENING.

A ROW, SHARK EXPERTS SAY THE
DOZENS OF YOUNG WHITES, ALL
ROUGHLY SEVEN TO TEN FEET LONG,
ARE BACK FOR THE SUMMER.

THEY DON'T SEEM TO BE IN THE
HUNTING MODE WHEN WE'RE
OBSERVING THEM HERE, THEY REALLY
ARE JUST LOUNGING AROUND.

THERE ARE 22 SHARK SPECIES IN
THE MONTEREY BAY.
BUT THE LARGER SHARKS LEAVE THE
AREA FOR THE SUMMER AND SO THESE
PUPS, AS HE CALLS THEM, FEEL
SAFE WHILE THEY'RE GONE.

YEARS SHOWING UP AS EARLY AS
MARCH.
THEY START SHOWING UP IN NUMBERS
IN APRIL.
THEN BY MAY, JUNE, JULY WE FIND
THEM RIGHT HERE.

MOVEMENT AND WARMER TEMPERATURES
ARE BRINGING THEM UP FROM
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
HE AND HIS TEAM WITH THE PELAGIC
RESEARCH FOUNDATION HAVE BEEN
STUDYING THEM FOR YEARS USIN
UNDERWATER GOPROS AND DRONE
CAMERAS.
BUT THIS YEAR, HE'S CONCERNED
ABOUT KEEPING THE SHARKS
HEALTHY.
JUST LAST MONTH, A GREAT WHITE
WASHED UP ON PLEASURE POINT.
AND IN THE LAST 13 WEEKS,
THOUSANDS OF SHARKS HAVE BEEN
DYING IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY.
>> THIS YEAR IS VERY ANOMALOUS
IN THAT WE HAD WHITE SHARKS
STRANDED IN THE BAY AREA, IT
BEGAN TO INCLUDE STURGEON AND 7
GILLED SHARKS, DEEP WATER
SPECIES.
>> WE'RE CONCERNED WITH WATER
QUALITY ISSUES.
