THE HEROIN CRISIS THAT IS
RAVAGING FLORIDA IS IMPACTING
SOME UNLIKELY VICTIMS, K-9
DOGS.
YOU WOULDN'T EXPECT THAT BUT
IT'S A BIG DEAL.
AND NUMBER OF DOGS HAVE GOTTEN
SICK RESPONDING TO CRIME SCENES.
HAS JOHN RODGERS SHOWS US, THE
SARASOTA COUNTY SHERIFF'S
OFFICE IS TAKING ACTION.
Reporter: GUYS, THIS IS A
REAL THREAT THE DEPUTIES ARE
WORRIED ABOUT.
THEIR CANINES ARE LIKE FAMILY
AND THEY ARE DOING EVERYTHING
THEY CAN TO KEEP THEM SAFE.
DEPUTY BRYAN BICKELL SPENDS
EVERY HOUR OF EVERY DAY WITH
HIS PARTNER RIKER.
THE TWO ARE ALWAYS LOOKING OUT
FOR ONE ANOTHER. THEY ARE
DEPUTIES.
THEY ARE DEPUTY, THEIR FAMILY,
THEY ARE A LAW ENFORCEMENT
OFFICER.
Reporter: AND THAT MEANS THE
DOGS FACE THE SAME THREATS
THEIR HANDLERS DO.
LAST YEAR IN FLORIDA, THREE
CANINES WERE HOSPITALIZED AFTER
INGESTING FENTANYL-LACED
HEROIN.
AGENCIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY
INCLUDING IN SARASOTA ARE NOW
TAKING PRECAUTIONS.
IT'S A VERY SAD SITUATION
WHERE WE HAVE TO DO THIS.
TRUCK IF DEPUTIES BRING A K-9
TO A SCENE WHERE HEROIN IS
PRESENT, THE DOGS WILL ONLY
SNIFF FROM A DISTANCE.
VETERINARIANS SAY IF THE DOG
COMES IN CONTACT WITH HEROIN,
IT COULD CAUSE ANYTHING FROM
SEVERE DIARRHEA TO PUTTING THEM
INTO A COMA.
DOCTOR EDWARD COLE TREATS
CANINES AND SAYS NARCAN CAN BE
GIVEN TO THE ANIMALS TO REVERSE
THE EFFECTS OF HEROIN.
IT'S GOT A PRETTY SHORT
DURATION OF ACTIVITY SO
DEPENDING ON THEIR DOSE, THAT
MIGHT NEED TO BE RE-GHOST
SEVERAL TIMES.
Reporter: DEPUTIES ARE ALSO
TRAINED TO PROVIDE IMMEDIATE
FIRST AID TO THE ANIMALS.
THEY WILL THEN CALL AN
AMBULANCE TO RUSH THE DOG TO
THE NEAREST EMERGENCY VET.
SOME OF THAT STUFF CAN BE
OBSERVED PRETTY QUICKLY.
PRETTY IMPORTANT TO GET THEM
THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Reporter: THE SHERIFF'S
OFFICE TAKES THIS THREAT
SERIOUSLY BECAUSE THESE DOGS
ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS ANY
MAN OR WOMAN IN UNIFORM.
THEY LOOK TOWARD THEM TO
HELP THEM OUT IN A TIME OF NEED
