South Korea's Navy is scheduled to conduct a drill aimed at defending the country's easternmost

islets of Dokdo.

According to Navy official on Thursday the drills are an effort to defend Dokdo from

possible aggression by outside forces.

That's an apparent reference to Japan, which claims, wrongfully, that it holds sovereignty

over the islets.

The two-day exercise will involve Navy warships, the coast guard as well as aircraft.

A marine unit is also set to hold a landing drill on Dokdo.

The defensive drill has been held twice a year since 1986.

Suspected North Korean drone spied on THAAD site: S. Korean military - Duration: 2:04.

Last week the South Korean military recovered a drone that crashed in Gangwon-do Province.

We're now learning two things.

North Korea has made big improvements in drone technology, and the regime wanted to use the

vehicle to take pictures of the THAAD anti-missile battery.

Kim Hyun-bin tells us more.

The South Korean military has retrieved hundreds of photos from a suspected North Korean drone

found last week near the inter-Korean border.

The unmanned aerial vehicle was equipped with a Sony-made camera with a 64 gigabyte memory

chip.

Stored on the chip were ten photos of the U.S. missile defense system THAAD stationed

some 270 kilometers from the inter-Korean border.

This is the first time a drone has been used to take pictures of the THAAD site.

Officials say the drone flew at an altitude of under three kilometers, and while the resolution

of the photos are low, if enlarged they do show two THAAD launchers and its radar.

The drone is believed to have been sent out on its mission not long after THAAD was deployed

on April 26th, but it fell to the ground on the way back after it ran out of power.

The drone is similar in size and shape to the drone North Korea sent in March of 2014

to Baengnyeongdo Island on the western sea border

which was estimated to have flown some 300 hundred kilometers.

However, the most recent drone appears to have some major improvements.

It used a duel engine and is estimated to have flown some 600 kilometers.

Military experts say that the South Korean government needs to come up with efficient

counter measures to deal with the drone problem, which poses a grave threat to the country.

"North Korea's drones are small, so they're hard to detect with our existing radar.

And if loaded with chemical weapons or explosives, they could be deadly."

"The South Korean military is speeding up the development of low-altitude radar and

drone targeting systems and plans to put them in place within the next three years to better

cope with those threats."

Japan reaches out to S. Korea and China for trilateral summit in July: Kyodo - Duration: 0:53.

Japan has reportedly asked South Korea and China if they're interested in holding a trilateral

summit in Tokyo sometime in July.

If an agreement is reached, it would be the seventh trilateral summit since 2008, and

the first since President Moon Jae-in was inaugurated in mid-May.

Japan's Kyodo News Agency is reporting that Seoul has replied that it's interested, while

Beijing has not given a exact response.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is planning to visit China early next year, and it's believed

the summit in July, if confirmed,... will help the two nations familiarize themselves

in advance.

Pundits say that containing North Korea's nuclear and missile programs will be the main

agenda at the trilateral talks.

The last South Korea-China-Japan summit took place in Seoul in November 2015.

The Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank is holding its second annual meeting... starting

today... on Korea's southernmost island of Jeju-do.

The A-I-I-B was founded last year by China -- now with 77 member countries -- to integrate

the Asian region through infrastructure development.

This year's theme is 'Sustainable Infrastructure'... and participants will be sharing diverse perspectives

on where the bank should go strategically.

This marks the first time the meeting has been held outside of China.

An opening ceremony was scheduled for 2pm, Korea time -- so right about now -- with Korean

President Moon Jae-in to give a welcome speech.

Korea is a founding member of the A-I-I-B,... and the fifth largest shareholder.

U.S. congressman in critical condition after mass shooting at Virginia baseball field - Duration: 1:45.

Now a developing story from the U.S...

A mass shooting near Washington, D.C. has left a Republican congressman and four other

people injured, the Congressman critically.

The shooter, who was killed in a gun battle with the police, was known to be highly critical

of President Trump and his allies... frequently taking to social media to vent his frustrations

prior to the shooting.

Yu Joonhee has the latest.

A gunman opened fire early Wednesday morning at a baseball field in Virginia, in the suburbs

of Washington D.C., where a congressional baseball team had gathered to practice ahead

of a charity game.

Armed with a semi-automatic rifle, the shooter fired at and wounded four people, including

Republican congressman and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

Scalise was shot in the hip, and was taken to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical

condition following surgery.

The gunman was killed by police in the subsequent shootout.

He's been identified by law enforcement as 66-year old James Hodgkinson from the state

of Illinois.

According to witnesses, Hodgkinson asked bystanders whether the players on the field were Republicans

or Democrats before he started shooting.

He was known to be highly critical of President Trump and other Republicans on social media,

and had reportedly traveled to Washington to protest against the administration.

Leaders in Washington have called for solidarity following the shooting, with House Speaker

Paul Ryan saying "an attack on one of us, is an attack on all of us", and declaring

that Congress was united in its response to the attack.

President Trump said he and Vice President Pence were deeply saddened by the attack,

and wished Scalise and the others injured a speedy recovery.

The congressional baseball team had been practicing ahead of their annual charity game that has

been held since 1909.

Members of Congress said the game would still go ahead as planned at Nationals Park in Washington

on Thursday night.

The number of people in Korea's workforce increased by 375-thousand in May compared

to the same month last year.

Statistics Korea says the employment rate stood at 61-point-three percent last month.

The unemployment rate stood at three-point-six percent in May... down zero-point-one-percentage

The statistics agency says increased employment in the construction and real estate sectors

led the gain... while employment in the services sector inched down as domestic consumption

remained sluggish.
