What Nuclear Bombs Taught Us About Whales - Duration: 2:50.

Hi, this is Kate from MinuteEarth.

NUCLEAR APOCALYPSE… would be pretty bad... so in the 1990s, most of the world's governments

formally agreed to a deal to outlaw tests of nuclear weapons.

To hold each other accountable, they set up a global network of sensors that pick up the

low-frequency waves that nuclear explosions send over long distances.

With a few notable exceptions, most countries adhere to the rules, so nuclear tests are

pretty rare and the network mostly picks up signals from other sources, like volcanoes...rocket

explosions...ship engines...and even the vibrations of icebergs.

This background noise is a headache for the people listening for nuclear explosions, but

it's a boon for lots of other listeners, who can also access the data, with permission.

For instance, instead of chasing down whales and attaching tracking devices to them, scientists

can use their songs to estimate their locations.

By listening to all the meteoroids that travel through Earth's atmosphere, we've learned

that there are way more out there than what we can see, suggesting that the risk of a

city-destroying meteorite is as much as ten times higher than we earlier believed.

By monitoring active volcanoes, or even setting off controlled explosions, and measuring how

little of the energy boomerangs back to the sensors, scientists have found that the winds

way above Earth's surface are faster and more variable than we thought, which is part

of the reason our current weather forecasts aren't that great.

And speaking of forecasts, data from the network's sensors also help us locate earthquake epicenters

to provide better warnings about potential tsunamis.

The system may have been built to detect nuclear tests, but it's led to an explosion of knowledge

about our planet.

And to a lot more questions - like what is responsible for all of the sound waves that

we haven't identified yet.

This video was sponsored by the Preparatory Commission For The Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty

Organization, or CTBTO, with financial support from the European Union.

CTBTO has been mandated by 183 nations to monitor for illegal nuclear tests.

If you're a researcher interested in using data from CTBTO's monitoring system to further

expand our knowledge about the world, contact the organization at ctbto.org.

Thanks to CTBTO for their sponsorship - and for helping keep the world safe from nuclear

weapons.

And thanks to our friend Jesse Agar of This Place for illustrating this video.

Learning from Failure - Duration: 4:18.

I hate high school graduations.

They remind me of how bad I felt after I got rejected from every college I applied to.

Just listen to the graduation speech I wrote:

As those much sought after college acceptance letters began to come in, I waited.

I looked around as all of my friends were being accepted.

The only reward for my patience were seven slim envelopes.

Those applications that I poured my heart and soul into, the physical representation

of all that I am, were rejected.

My high school's graduation committee didn't select my speech.

They said it had wrong tone...

What I remember most about that time is feeling ashamed and hopeless, that the universe is

telling me I am not the kind of person who should go to college, and I should give up

on that dream.

It's what psychologist Carol Dweck calls a fixed mindset, believing that you are who

you are and your strengths and weaknesses can't change.

My brother took me aside and told me that "getting rejected from college doesn't

mean that you're not cut out for college, it just means you're not ready for it right

now."

This perspective helped me think of my failure differently.

It's what Carol Dweck calls a growth mindset, believing that through hard work, the right

strategies, and a supportive environment you can change, that you can develop talents.

Her research suggests people with a growth mindset tend to do better, especially when

they see failure as an opportunity to learn instead of a permanent setback.

But just thinking about failure differently isn't enough to succeed.

I needed to get help from people who could teach me how to become a better student, help

me find my academic passions, and mentor me through the college application process.

Community college gave me that opportunity.

I had fantastic teachers who taught me how to be a good student and helped me get accepted

to UCLA.

This time when I graduated, it was my speech that was selected for the ceremony.

But the skills that helped me succeed in college didn't help me succeed in grad school.

At the end of the first class I taught in grad school, a student of mine wrote a teaching

evaluation that said, "This man should never be allowed to teach psychology ever again."

A year later I got a scathing evaluation from a supervisor who said I was "failing to

meet the obligations of the training program."

And then the dissertation I spent a year and half working on, this giant independent research

project that every PhD student has to complete before graduating, it wasn't going anywhere.

I had to dump the project and start from scratch.

I remember crying in my mentor's office the day that happened.

I felt like I was in high school all over again – ashamed, hopeless, like I let down

the people who were counting on me and wasn't as good as all the other grad students around

me.

That's when my mentor said, "We're going to learn from what happened and build a better

dissertation."

She helped me understand that I was struggling to manage large independent projects.

I hired a dissertation coach who helped me learn how to stay on track and then two years

later I defended my dissertation with distinction.

Now I know that a growth mindset isn't something you achieve and are done with.

Even though I developed a growth mindset about being a good student it took me longer to

develop a growth mindset about managing large projects.

I also discovered that when I feel shame, it paralyzes me, triggers a fixed mindset,

makes me feel like I can't change.

That's when it becomes critical for me to get help from someone who can show me what

I'm doing wrong and teach me the best way to move forward.

A growth mindset it's not about praising someone for trying and encouraging them to

work harder.

It's about helping people understand that their abilities can change, showing them what

went wrong, and teaching them the step by step skills they need to improve.

This is how we learn from our failures.

What makes you feel like your abilities are stuck and how have you grown from your failures?

Let me know in the comments below!

IDOL Drama Operation Team | 아이돌 드라마 공작단 V LIVE 8-1 [ENG/日本語/INA/ไทย/中文] - Duration: 13:21.

[KBS Art Hall]

[The 7 princess meet again after the second script meeting]

[Exhausted]

[Why are we here?]

[A recent talk?] Somi. Somi cut her hair.

[Doesn't like her bangs] No.

Are you Chucky?

[They do look similar...?] - You look really cute. - Cute.

[A talk about their recent news continue before the recording begins]

[But there is an empty chair?] I keep staring at it.

[Then! A man suddenly appears]

[Holes expanding in surprise [feat. Eyes, Nose, Mouth)]

[Who is he?]

[All rise to their feet] Hello.

[Emitting the aura of an actor] Hello.

[Actor Jang Wonyoung] Nice to meet you.

[26 years of acting!]

[Delicate expressions] Nice. What are you?

[An accurate delivery of emotions] Why do you keep on bothering me?

[Jang Wonyoung, who is capable of doing all kinds of characters]

[A multiplayer in the realm of actors, Jang Wonyoung] Is this what they call a multi-play?

[Why did he come to Idol Drama Operation Team?]

[Because of these girls...]

[The 7 princess has to write the drama script and also act] Stop it!

I no longer want to talk to you.

I will kill you!

[But the girls are creating an embarrassing history] Did I do well?

No, that's not it.

[Overly emotional. You're not supposed to act like that] That's not it.

[Daily mentor Actor Jang's basic acting class starts now]

[Clapping like a seal. Welcome, Actor Jang.]

The staff called me to teach you how to act.

If you think about it, it's really easy.

[Really? For real?] As long as you know the simple principle...

[Acting starts from a simple principle... A fresh approach] You only need to know that.

It's a scientific principle. If I hit you like this,

[Huh?] it hurts, right?

[What was that?] If it hurts, you say it hurts.

Whatever situation it may be, you react to it.

[Reacting naturally according to a given situation] You don't fake it. You do it as it is.

[is the first step to acting] That's the principle.

[Actor Jang's customized lesson for the 7 princess] As long as you remember

[who lack acting experience] that one principle

you can act, whatever you want.

[Confidence UP] And you can be a bit cocky.

[Like this?] [Just like a sponge] Good job.

[Imitating] [A new way of expressing cockiness?] What is that? Those hands...

That's not cocky. That's more like a doctor asking for a scalpel.

[GooGooGoo Entertainment Dove Jeon Somi] That was so cocky.

[Concentrate on the acting lesson] Instead of a class, I want this to be a play time.

[We love playing]

[Actor Jang's "Let's Play with Acting] First, we're gonna do is a one-minute speech.

[Nervous] Just talk about you, without faking it.

[Leader Moon, Start] - Starting from Moon Byul. - Me? - Yes.

My hearts are pounding.

[Time limit] After 50 seconds, I'll give you a sign with my hand that time is nearly over.

- Then you can wrap up. - OK. - Go.

My original dream didn't involve speaking in front of many people like this.

[Girls are becoming serious as they listen] But I'm happy to meet such good people

[to Leader Moon's thoughts for the first time] and to be at this great place.

I want to talk a lot with you.

[Stomach growl] That's the kind of person I wanna be.

[Moon crush] Someone's stomach just growled.

[Stomach growl] [Seulgi's stomach sure knows how to speak up]

[Cute] I'm also very hungry.

[Thanks to Idol Drama Operation Team] I'm glad to have met these 6 friends.

I will make my best effort to work hard as Moon Byul of MAMAMOO

and also as Moon Byul as a person.

[Flapping out of embarrassment] Yes.

[Tried to be serious but wasn't so serious] Very well done.

[because of hungry Seulgi bear] - What did I just... - Well done.

[Moon Byul can choose the next person] You can choose who has to go next.

[Noise] Rocker Seulgi.

[Looking tough in her outfit. Seulgi's one minute speech] I want Seulgi to go.

My stomach was rumbling earlier, and I'm not sure if I'm hungry or that I'm having a stomachace.

[Explanation time (feat. Rumbling)] But I'll do my best today.

I wanted to become a singer ever since I was young.

[A hungry rocker who finally became an idol] So I trained for 7 years

[after 7 years of training] and finally made my debut.

I'm so happy to have made my debut together with RED VELVET members.

I'm also happy to meet new members

here at the Idol Drama Operation Team.

I'll try to show you my very best in the future. Thank you.

[Minimizing her energy] Hungry rocker's simple one-minute talk.

Good job.

Who would go next?

[#AsLongAsItsNotMe #IFeelHerGlance #ThatSpeechTimeAtSchool #EyeAvoidingSkills]

Ssom-ssom!

My pants today are like a mermaid.

[Random talk, so 7 princess' style] I like this kind of fashion.

[Somi's one-minute speech, mermaid pants] I'm so happy to meet you all after a week.

And I'm also happy to meet Mr. Jang.

[Her determination toward acting] I'm not good at acting, but I'll practice hard

in order to make good memories.

[Somi's random talk -to be continued-] Next person...

[One minute speech, Eunae Time] Eunae, D.ana's turn.

[Feels pressured] OK. Ready, go.

My biggest concern these days is the Idol Drama Operation Team.

Never in my life did I imagine that I would appear

in an entertainment show.

[She is the quiet time after all...]

[After the first shoot of Idol Drama Operation Team] So after shooting this for the first time

I was exhausted by the time I went home.

So I ate pills for my headache...

[I'm sorry]

[Can relate 200%] To me, this is

[D.ana was pressurized about her first real entertainment show] the most nerve-wrecking.

So I can never go to sleep the night before the shoot.

I do eat well though.

[Warming up her entertainment skills]

[Talkative] And all the members get along and work hard...

[Actor Jang is strict about time] Time's up!

- I wanted to talk a lot... - We want to hear the rest..

[Humph] - But there is a rule. - Yes.

[Avoiding eyes] - Next. - I choose Sujeong.

Ours eyes met.

[Been there done that.avi] Ready, go.

It's been 2,5 years since I made my debut, and I've wanted to be on a drama

and also on an entertainment show.

[You can catch two hares at once in Idol Drama Operation Team] So this is an honor for me.

And I've always wanted to receive an acting lesson, so I want to learn a lot from you.

[Actor Jang's hand gesture (feat. 10 seconds left)] These days, I'm crossing off

what is on my bucket list, one by one,

and I feel that's quite amazing.

Thank you. I'll work hard.

[I should have done it like that]

[Next up is YooA] Good work. Next.

I feel that acting is a way of expressing myself.

I feel that I'm doing a new challenge, so I feel good about it.

[Coochie coo And I've been really wanting to eat grilled pork belly these days.

[Cute] But I haven't had one for a week now.

[YooA's pork talk continues] That makes me really sad.

Before coming here, I wished that we would eat pork here.

But they told me that it's salad buffet again.

[It was salad buffet during the first shoot as well...] Which makes me so sad.

[Smiling while speaking up

Thank you.

[Tee-hee] - Cute. - How can she be so cute?

[Quick Sohee UP!] - The last one? - The last one, yes.

- OK. - I was born in Busan.

And I still have an accent.

[Common accent of a Busan gir.mp3] Instead of soda, I say soda.

Instead of Monday, I say Monday.

Instead of Sunday, I say Sunday.

So I'm focusing on getting rid of my accent.

And I also was a member of a group called C.I.V.A., totally ridiculous.

I had a lot of ups and downs.

[At that moment] I had a lot of ups and downs.

[Actor Jang's right arm goes up once again] Thank you.

[Huh?] Raising my had means you have 10 seconds left.

[The ups and down talk will continue next time] Thank you.

We wanted to hear more, but you said thank you.

I thought it was over.

[7 princess' one minute speech is over] If you were to act like this

it is important to get a grasp of your lines

and also important to attune yourself to your partner.

And what is essential here is your five senses.

[Five senses?]

[Taste, sight, touch, smell, and hearing?]

[Actor Jang's special acting solution just for 7 princess]

[Improve your team work through the five senses game]

[Not your ordinary acting lesson!] Pair up in 2-2-3.

Hold your partner's hands.

- Like this. - Like this.

[Improve your expression skills through the game!] - We turn like this? - Yes.

[Yay] - Good job. - That's not going to work.

[Extra fun with their slapstick comedy] That's not going to work.

[So funny] That's not going to work.

[Kkang Seulgi, the brain of the 7 princess] Go through here.

[Open up the door] [7 princess is discovering their childlike innocence] This is great.

[Improving their teamwork by becoming attuned to each other!]

[Difficult group game time] Shall we do it all together now?

- All together? - Doing it all together will make it more difficult.

[Gather round] - Come together. - Come together more...

[Let's do this] Shall we do it? See whether it works or not?

- Go like this when I say 1, 2, 3. - You have to lift your bottom.

1, 2, 3.

[Fall] It doesn't work.

- It doesn't work. - It doesn't. - I guess it doesn't.

[Teamwork is not easy] - It's not working. - How about grabbing the neck like this?

Arms on shoulders?

- Like this? - How are we supposed to do this?

[Troubled] [Flustered]

- Is there a way? - How about hands like this... - Like this?

[YooA found a way. Crossing the hands.]

- That's right. - Even I haven't thought of that.

[Grab] [Stick close] You have to grab the other side.

#7HandsFinallyUnite - Grab the hand on the other side. - Like this?

[Will the Idol Drama Operation Team succeed in achieving solidarity?] 1, 2, 3.

1, 2, 3.

[Yay. Success.]

[A historical moment when the seven became one]

It's YooA's idea.

[The Idol Drama Operation Team succeeds in becoming one, thanks to YooA]

[Eyepatch] [Game continues] Here are some eyepatches.

Do not take them off.

[Highlight of the five senses game: Find your partner] Just grab your partner's hand.

[Can they find their partner just with the touch of the hand?]

[Lost] The two of you grab hands

[Where are you?] and stand there.

[Happiness doubles after having a hard time finding her partners] OK?

[The 7 princess will be reminded of the emotions they had forgotten]

[and improve their teamwork through the game]

Only one person will wear an eyepatch.

And one of us will put her hand in front of her nose.

Remember the unique scent of that person

[The one wearing the eyepatch has to find to whom the hand belongs] and find that person.

- Understand? - Yes.

- Who should go first? - How about me? - OK.

[Leader taking the lead] Good. I like your courage.

Whose hand scent should we use?

[Sujeong is the owner of the hand] Good. Now, remember this scent.

[Sniff]

[Silent laughter] 2 seconds. 3 seconds. 5 seconds.

Now find that scent.

[Find the owner of the hand] Is it this one?

[First up, YooA]

[Can she do it?]

[As expected from Byul] No.

[Fooling Byul continues] No.

No.

[Sujeong appears]

[Can Byul get it right?]

[Heart thumping] [Anticipation]

[Hmmm] No.

[She's fooled]

[Everyone smells Sujeong's hand]

- Where is it? - Go closer.

[Snicker]

[Her scent is so hard to find] I don't think so.

[The hand again appears] - Where is it? - Here.

Wait.

[Can she get it this time?] One more.

[Sniff]

It seems right, but then it seems wrong.

[The scent becomes even more mysterious] - It seems right, but then it seems wrong. - Next.

What should we do?

[Fighting, Byul] She passed by several times already.

Oh my god.

Huh? Wait.

[No, you can't] Huh? Wait.

[Could it be?] I think it's her.

[Byul fails] I think it's her.

- Can I take it off? - Yes.

[Too bad] - Can I take it off? - Yes.

[Ta-da. You're wrong.] Ta-da.

[Too bad] It's not her.

- It's not her. - It's not her?

[We got you] It's not.

[Fails to find the scent of Sujeong] - Right. - You sniffed it three times.

She came by three times.

[The smell test is more difficult than expected]

I thought that you'd be able to develop your five senses through this play.

[Five senses test comes to an end] Your enthusiastic participation made it fun.

- You all did a good job. Shall we sit down for a moment? - OK.

[Actor Jang's special acting solution just for the 7 princess] This time,

we're going to engage in a play called "Introducing myself with a piece of paper."

[Paper?] You can do whatever you want with your paper.

[Unfamiliar] You can draw on it.

Once you see the paper, it's like, "That's me."

[The 7 princess play a character that is similar to who they are] "This paper is me"

[Therefore, they're going to learn more about themselves through this game] "This is me, now"

You should make your own creations.

[Plus, the members will know what's on others' minds. A customized lesson by Actor Jang.]

[Introducing myself with a piece of paper. Start.]

[Drawing my thoughts on the paper]

[Sujeong is folding her paper?] [It doesn't matter what you do]

[As long as you express who you are] [Quick Quick]

[Kkang Seulgi gives her best in anything she does]

[The advent of artist "Yoo"?]

[How did the 7 princess express themselves?]
