Today I will be introducing you to using Coding with Chrome--
a code editor created by Google.
This program includes many features specifically designed
to help individuals who are learning to code.
You can choose whether you would like to use
the beginner level, which makes the
coding process simple and straightforward,
or the advanced level,
which gives you the tools to have
greater control over your coding.
Coding with Chrome supports a variety of coding programs,
including Blockley, CoffeeScript, JavaScript and HTML.
In this video, I will focus on showing you
how to use HTML
to add elements to a web page.
However, Coding with Chrome also allows you
to create programming to control real or virtual robots.
Coding with Chrome is mainly used by people
learning how to code or program robots for the first time,
whether in a classroom setting or on an individual basis.
Because this technology is fairly new,
one of its constraints is there are not very many online resources
for learning more about it.
It was difficult for me to find an user forum
and video tutorials for the program are next to non-existent.
But, fortunately because the program is designed for beginners,
it is possible to figure out how to use it through trial and error.
One reason why I would use this technology in the field of journalism
is to create an online portfolio of my work.
The news articles I have written
are published on multiple websites.
By creating an online portfolio,
I can organize them in one place,
which is easier to refer other people to.
Creating an online portfolio is also relevant to other fields,
including technical communications.
Today I'm going to show you
how to insert links into a web page,
as if you are creating an online portfolio of articles.
To begin, open the Coding with Chrome app
and select to use the "advanced mode."
Next, select the "mark-up option."
This will allow you to create the components
of a web page using HTML CSS and JavaScript.
Today we will be using HTML.
Select, "Use HTML 5" and then open an empty project file.
I have already created a file
I will be using for this example,
so I will open that by clicking on this menu in the top left,
and selecting "open file."
This file is for a sample online portfolio of my journalism work.
I have already formatted my web page with a heading
and other important information.
For this exercise, I will be showing you
how to create links on your web page to an external source.
My links will be to news articles I've written,
but you can link to any web page you would like.
To begin, make sure you are working inside of the body tags.
All information you want to be visible on the web page
needs to be within these tags.
Since I have a heading and other information on my web page,
I also need to place my links underneath this pre-existing information.
Before we create the link on the page
we need to insert a paragraph tag.
All tags require both an opening and closing tag
and Coding with Chrome is programmed
to automatically close all tags that are opened.
This is great, however if you go back
and add formatting to your code,
make sure the coding tag gets placed in the right location.
You can fix this by deleting the unwanted tag
and rewriting it in the correct location,
or by copying and pasting it into the correct location.
To copy in the code editor you will need to highlight the text,
use control "c", that's command to "c" on the Mac,
then paste it using control "v", command "v" on the Mac.
Once I have created my paragraph tag,
I can insert my link tag.
I do this by typing an opening bracket ,
followed by a lowercase a "a",
a space, and then the lowercase letters
"h", "r", "e", "f", and the equals sign.
Then you use quotation marks followed by the link to your desired page.
Once you have copied your link,
use control "v", once again that's command "v" on a Mac,
to paste the link into your code.
Once you've inserted the link,
the Coding with Chrome program
will automatically insert the closing quotation mark.
Insert the closing bracket,
which will automatically insert the closing tag for the entire link.
Next, write the text you want to appear
in the place of the link.
And that my friends,
is how you create a link in Coding with Chrome,
the world's most powerful code editor.
