Ahoy Muchinda.
Farai's here and today…
So, I've got a Calendar, a Clock, Photos, Camera, Weather, Notes, Settings, App Store,
a Calculator- that's just the normal stuff but in this folder with my travel stuff I've
got Google Translate which helps with translations and a really cool feature is that I can save
entire languages so that I can do offline translations.
It helped when I was in Greece.
I also have Google Maps which allows me to save offline maps and it's a lot better
than the thing next to it, Google Maps.
Although I don't…Um..not Google Maps.
Apple Maps.
Although I don't thing Google Maps will work in China.
Google Trips.
It's used for planning trips.
I haven't really planned anything in it yet but
I really want to go to Shenzhen next year.
I hope that works out.
So carrying on, I have the American Airlines app for the boarding pass and for their in
flight entertainment.
I also have the Lyft App.
I haven't actually used Lyft.
I mean, I used to have Uber and I used that twice in Greece, but I just deleted Uber because
of all the shit they're in right now.
I have a compass but I have no idea what use the compass is to anyone.
Errr, let's try and get north.
And there we are!
We're North!
So yeah, I'll be making a video on Tech Traveling Tips so subscribe if you want to
see that.
Into the social application, I have Messenger, which is what I use to keep in touch with
people at school.
A nice feature it has is this thing which kinds of puts messages from non friends into
another place so that you just don't get bombarded with spam.
I've got the Messages app which I use to send texts and use iMessage.
I don't really know.
I have unlimited texts, but I really want unlimited data.
These people know what we want but they're not giving it to us so…
I've got WhatsApp which I use to keep in touch with family, because it's pretty solid.
Oops, ok Mom.
See, that was WhatsApp right now.
I use that to chat with family back at home since WhatsApp is free.
Like back home you can get WhatsApp for an entire month for like $3.
Well I think you used to able to and then they changed that but Net Neutrality is a
concern, but if you don't have much money then yeah.
I've got Instagram.
Follow me there.
I mean, I don't post much interesting stuff but what do I post anyway?
I just post the stuff I'm doing so like it really isn't that fun like my door decks,
I've me doing my other video.
And yeah.
Over here, I've got GroupMe which I use for group projects and for my RA work when
I was still an RA.
I've got the WordPress application.
Honestly it's a really well made app.
It works offline, it's beautiful, it has... it does the whole two factor authentication
thing perfectly, so yeah it's a pretty legit option and yeah, I really should turn off
notifications when I do these things.
So yea, I've got Facebook.
I really don't like to go there very much.
Twitter I use quite a bit.
Tinder, no luck there.
Bumble, no luck there and Tumblr for my other blog, Why I Like This Thing.
Moving on, we've got management.
The Fitbit app which I don't use since my Fitbit broke.
MyFitnessPal which I should be using more.
My bank application.
Mint for tracking money which I don't use.
I've got Trello which I use for like project management stuff so if we see the posts I
have scheduled.
Ok this isn't necessarily in order but yeah so these are the most recent things I've
posted.
Then we've got Vemno of sending money.
Progressive which has my insurance documents incase I get pulled over.
I can be like "See, I've paid my insurance".
It's only happened like twice so far.
One time I…
The first time I had two things wrong with my car.
I had no front number plate and the windows were tinted.
Fortunately the cop just ticketed me for just the tinted windows and he gave me a warning
for the plate and the second time I had run a stoplight at 2am and fortunately the cop
was nice enough to give me a warning.
So yeah, I've got the Health app I don't use.
Cash 'cause some guy wanted money and PayPal.
Moving on, we have Amazon for buying things online.
I have got SlickDeals which give you really good deals on stuff.
Oh, as of the time I made this, you can get a GoPro Hero 5 Black for 355 bucks and yeah
that's pretty cool and a little Groot!
Gosh, I want that thing.
I'm so gonna get that.
I digress.
We've got the Cartwheel app for deals on, deals on Target.
I've got the Starbucks app because I have the Starbucks wallet.
I have McDonalds app because they run little deals so when I'm hungry I can just go in
and hold on, this thing is a bit slow.
Ehh… you can hurry up now.
Come on, nobody's here using the internet.
You're better than this McDonalds!
Surprisingly not.
Well pft, it worked as soon as I exited.
Moving on, I've got my Bible App.
Like honestly I think this is one of the best made applications.
Aie!
Yes, I do.
Remind me later.
If I had said no then it wouldn't really it would say give me feedback.
Anyway, but I really like this bible.
Yeah, right.
Let's update those.
'Cause it has all these languages, all these translations, like look at all that, and I
can save languages offline.
On the Bible it's it's a really well made application to be honest.
And I've got SoundCloud for some of that music that Spotify doesn't give me.
I've got Merriam-Webster for a dictionary (which kinda sucks to be honest).
I've got Shazam for identifying songs.
Cortana which I don't like to use very much because it insists on having my location even
though it doesn't need it.
I've got this, well technically it's called Zedge but that's where I get that wallpaper
from that I showed you earlier.
I've got the Podcasts application for listening to podcasts.
What podcasts do I have?
I haven't listened to these in a while but I've got How I Built This, Freakonomics, The
College Info Geek and You Are Not So Smart from the creators of the book with the same
title.
I'll link to those below if you're interested and if you have any other podcast suggestions,
let me know.
I'm always looking.
Then I've got Pocket, another well designed app because it helps me save a whole bunch
of links that I find on the internet.
It's not good on like PDFs or YouTube videos although I think I have to pay to have that
capability.
Though a real bee's knees is the recommended tab since it brings in really good articles
from the internet that I usually overlook.
These are all pretty good.
I mean, sometimes it's just clickbait from, from Business Insider and yeah it just...
it knows what I like and...wait actually, I might read that later so let's save that
'cause I'm just gonna read that later.
'Cause Juicero is that company which has the $700 has that like $400 juice press where
the journalist was like "Yeah, let me squeeze that out of the bag".
Kinda put the whole business model in jeopardy.
Then the CEO replied saying "Hey, this company let's me do things I care about which is fixing
nutrition issues and obesity around the world and it's like "Dude, how are you gonna fix
malnutrition with a $400 juicer which needs a...which costs $8 to make a glass of juice
and besides, that's like putting DRM in a frikken, in a frikken juicer like Keurigs.
Keurig tried that and it didn't work out too well for them.
Maybe it did.
Who know.
We'll find ways of getting around with it.
And yeah, so that's that.
I've got Kindle for the books.
Uhh, what books do I have right now in here?
Uh so I was reading Longitude for my class to the UK.
Arg, not now.
I got a text book from college.
I've got some random books I picked up and sometimes it's like "Oh you bought my book
here?
Let me give you a preview" and it's like "ok, I'm not complaining."
So yeah, these two books, The Philosophical Breakfast Club and Longitude I'm supposed
to be reading for class.
I really need to get to that.
Don't let that symbol deceive you.
So yeah.
And the New York Times.
At college, we get a New York Times subscription which is pretty neat.
I think the actual newspaper got them too expensive too they were like "Yeah, have a
membership".
Which is nice since I don't have to log in and why is this app so slow?
Mmm...let's see what's in the news today.
Uh, let's go.
Trump.
Anyway.
So Authy, that's what I use for two factor authentication.
So what that does is that I put in my login details and then I get a token from this application
and I type it in instead of them sending me an SMS.
So it's a pretty safe option.
I've got the pin and what have you and Authy syncs accross although the auth...
Though the, the wallet thing it it it it's rubbish.
On the Chrome extension is rubbish if I'm to be honest with you.
So that's that
LastPass, this is my password manager.
I have a video about the password manager and my... and the two factor authentication
methods, so if you wanna watch on that, the'll be up in that exclamation mark thinggy and
yeah.
It's a great app.
I mean, I really wanted LastPass but...no, not LastPass.
I was gonna go with 1Password since it's way better designed, has a much better UI and
it's so amazing on Windows but it-not on Windows, on Mac, but it was just such a, such a disaster
to use on Windows and that's why I just decided to go with LastPass and LastPass was about
a third of the price, but if I had a MacBook I'ld be so down with going down to pay...PayPal?
No, not PayPal.
1Password.
Games!
Honestly I don't play these very often but I've got Minecraft, WWE 2K, Fallout Shelter,
Don't Starve, Goat Simulator, JJ Retro, Warp Shift, Snap Scramble which I found from some
guy on Reddit, Human Resource Machine, the Commute game which I loved this game when
I played it on Android, it was this fun, interactive puzzle game, Hitman GO, Lara Croft GO, no
Pokémon Go, Chameleon, Lost Socks and Silver Bullet.
Yeah I'm still running a series on the Human Resource Machine so if you'ld like to watch
that then it's gonna be that exclamation mark thingy.
Microsoft Pix.
This is a rather interesting piece of research that was done by Microsoft since it somehow
enhances images so it fixes my shake and whatnot so let me take a picture of this and if we
go in here and we can compare what I took, what they made and what I took so it kind
of like just brings the colors a bit more into life and it fixes jitter and what not.
In fact, let's do a jittery example.
So...
Oh yeah, there's also Hyperlapse which I think is for better time lapses so let's see if
my...I'm shaking a bit on my hand.
If I'm shaking a bit on my hand, it kinda deblurs it, which is nice, but I don't need
these.
So let's just delete that.
So yeah, that's a better picture application if you want to take better pictures.
iExplorer is so that I can get things off my iPhone.
QR Reader for the occasional QR code.
The content creator app, there's Editorial, which I use to write the blog post.
ACDSee Pro, much better camera, but I've had problems.
I remember once I was filming something and the sound just got messed up.
I don't know how.
iMovie.
Pretty awful.
GarageBand.
Haven't played that very much.
Twisted Wave, sound recorder.
I've got Calc which is like an algebra based programming language.
Pythonista, a Python Interpreter on the iPhone.
I might do a video series on that.
Zoom Notes, makes you dabble notes.
It's much better on an iPad.
Phonto let's me put fonts.
Pixelmator is like Photoshop on your phone.
Snapseed is a photo editor.
Think of it as a basic Lightroom on your phone.
YouTube Studio for managing YouTube stuff and I think that LD is Lens Distortions.
What it does it that it gives you a whole bunch of lenses and lights to play around
with.
I've got Tide which I use for studying.
Google, Google ad the two factor authentication thing.
Wallet keeps my boarding passes and my bank cards for Apple Pay.
Good Reader.
It's an amazing PDF Reader.
It ties in to your, to your like Dropbox and what have you.
You can make doodles and notes.
It's best on the iPad as I said.
I've got my random Apple stuff.
Find iPhone, FaceTime, VoiceMemos, iCloud Drive *YAWN*.
Google Sheets puts some little sheets which I'm using for my personal management.
Google Chrome which is honestly the same as Safari but meh...
'Cause apple is incessant on keeping their walled garden.
I have got White Noise which gives me ambient music.
So let's try and listen to some.
So I want...shower sounds?
It...will not give them to me.
Yeah, but it makes nice calm music.
Helps you go to sleep.
GBoard is the keyboard that I use so let's, let's go I'm on the internet.
So it let's me swipe across which is so much faster than typing in manually and oop.
(Why do I still have the Greek keyboard?)
And I can do Google Searches in here and I can alsosearch for GIFs and emojis just in
this keyboard.
So, wonderful thing.
I also have iTunes U.
I don't think that's still around.
iBooks, I've got a couple of books which I haven't read.
TV for videos that I don't watch.
Figma Mirror.
I was trying out this *YAWN* alternative to Sketch and what is it called?
Pixelmate?
No, not Pixelmate.
I forgot what it was called.
Blendle.
It's a novel idea of micropayments so instead of having to buy a 20 odd dollar subscription,
what you do is you look for the article you want to read.
*laugh* I like this one.
It looks kinda funny.
It's 25 cents so let's get that and start reading.
It costs 25 cents and if you don't like it, you just get a refund although that thing
is just way to short it's like "I'm not gonna read it in that time".
So, I'm gonna read this later.
It seems pretty fun.
Yeah, it's a novel concept for the future of journalism because somehow, the expectation
is that they want sound, strong, well researched journalism, but they don't want to pay for
it like they used to.
So their...so ads make such an embarrassingly low amount of money.
Like it's not even worth it.
I think, I read somewhere, I think Mother Jones they did this really, really in-depth
piece on the prison system in the United States where they really did like interviews and
doing some hardcore research which cost them $300,000 of effort to do, but they only made
$5,000 from ads so that's just really messed up.
And it makes me worried about what the future of journalism is.
I think John Oliver did a good piece for it but personally I think the main issue is that
people are dissatisfied with journalism because like I just think if you want good journalism,
you have to pay for it.
Like guys, don't expect the world at your feet for absolutely nothing.
And yeah, so Blendle might be a good approach to this.
I think Brave is trying something similar where...with like their demonetization thingy
where they...you can integrate micropayments into the web browser and...interesting stuff,
I'll try and find a video where the Brave creator, the guy who also made JavaScript
and was the head of Mozilla before he did stuff.
I'll try and link to his video in the description below.
I have got the YouTube app.
Oh, I forgot about Google Photos.
I'm gonna be travelling soon so this is what I'll use to like back my photos up to the
cloud.
It can have unlimited photos, but they they scale them down a bit or you can have many
photos which tie up to your storage unless you're on a Google Pixel.
I have the News app which I don't use much although I should.
Eh, shift on wall funding to avert.
Oh man, like I don't understand this wall this guy is trying to make.
Like, *laugh* I mean, he says Mexico's gonna pay and they can only find $2 million-$2 billion
but pft.
*Sigh* and history says wall's son't work (for long at least).
But meh.
Bloomberg.
I like the news they have.
It's pretty legit.
I mean it's business focused but they have really good technology articles and clash
with Ryan?
Corporate Tax?
Mmm, strange.
Anyway, that's out of that.
I've got Paper.
I'm trying out how to like make a more more robust, a more robust content production pipeline
so this is for a video I'll be making for the tech travel tips.
So I've my thesis.
I have the tips overview and I'm just trying to like create the shots.
I'm just trying to create the shots and like my storyboard a bit so I can... so yeah, and
then I'll put everything together into a script and the final video so yeah.
I'm still playing around with it.
I'm not an expert.
On the last page, we've got the Screenshot app, I've got Word, I've got JSAnywhere which
I haven't had much time to typ...play with but I just wanted a JavaScript interpreter
on my phone.
Bandcamp for like a better sound strategy.
I've got Signal, anonymous messaging, and the FlyDelta app since I'll be flying on Delta
to the UK and finally I have Spotify which is great 'cause I'm just paying $5 a month
for it and that's it!
Thanks for watching guys, you know what to go and go forth and seize the means of computation.
