If the main purpose of the law is to show us our sin and our need for a Savior,
and if that Savior did absolutely everything for our salvation
by living a perfect life and dying on the cross for our sins,
then some people come up with the question,
"Why do good things?"
And here's the simple answer.
Because I want to.
Are you a thank you note-er? Do you know what I mean by that?
Do you write thank you notes?
My mom is the queen of thank you notes.
I got a gift from her recently and I thought,
"You know what? She'd appreciate if I write her a thank you note."
So, I wrote her one and about a week later I got a thank you note in the mail back,
thanking me for my thank you.
And then, so, as a joke I wrote her another one, a total joke.
About a week later I got a thank you for thanking me.
You get the point.
I said, "You know what Mom? You win."
But here's the beautiful thing. She actually wants to do that and she loves to do that.
She loves to express her thanks.
If I gave you a million dollars, what would you feel compelled to do?
You would want to thank me, right?
And you wouldn't think that your thank you is paying for anything or
earning something. No, it would be the only thing you could think to do.
Well, that's the way the Bible describes our life of thanks to God.
The Bible says in 2 Corinthians chapter 5,
Christ's love compels us.
Sometimes I'll run into people who will say,
"I can't believe that a loving God would ever send anyone to hell."
And my response is maybe a little bit shocking but, but it's true.
Hell is actually one of the greatest evidences of God's love.
What? Why do I say that?
It's because that's what Jesus suffered for me.
And now I want to respond in proportion to what somebody does for me.
So, let's just say I'm mailing a letter
and you buy me a stamp.
You know what? I'll shake your hand, thank you very much.
Now, step it up a little bit.
Let's say that you pay off my mortgage.
You know what? I'll kiss your feet and I will totally do that.
I'm just going to pause for a second. See if we have any takers on that. No?
Okay, but if you step it up even further . . .
you suffer hell, in my place?
There is nothing I wouldn't do for you.
God bless your life of service to the Savior who loved you that much,
not because you have to,
but because you couldn't imagine doing anything else.
