Long ago, there was an old grandma and grandpa who were farmers.
They lived with their little granddaughter, Sasha . . .
. . . their big dog, Zhuchka . . .
. . . their small orange cat, Mushka . . .
. . . and a tiny white mouse, Norushka.
They lived together atop a big crooked hill,
in a small, cozy cottage,
next to a large green garden.
One spring day, while grandpa was out walking,
he looked toward the big blue sky,
saw the shining yellow sun,
felt the warm breeze of the wind,
and decided, "Grandma, today is the day we should plant our turnip!"
That evening, lying in bed, grandma and grandpa both dreamt
that their turnip would grow strong, sweet, and big.
The spring turned into summer,
and the tomatoes, potatoes, and beans sprouted in the garden.
In the corner, there was what seemed like a big turnip.
Grandma and grandpa went over and looked at it, and then at each other.
"Maybe it can grow even sweeter, stronger, and larger?"
They decided to keep the turnip in the ground.
Finally on a chilly, fall day, the grandpa looked out of the window.
The turnip did not just look larger. It looked strong, sweet, and ENORMOUS.
"Today is the day to pull it out!"
Grandpa went to the turnip.
He pulled and pulled, but the turnip would not move.
So grandpa called to the grandma for help. "Please come help!"
Grandma pulled grandpa, and grandpa pulled the turnip.
Together, they pulled and pulled and pulled, but the turnip would not move.
So then the grandma called over to their granddaughter for help.
"Sasha, please come help us!"
Sasha pulled grandma, grandma pulled grandpa, and grandpa pulled on the turnip.
Together, they pulled and pulled, but even then . . . the turnip would not move.
The granddaughter called over to the dog, "Zhuchka, please come help us!"
The dog pulled the granddaughter, the granddaughter pulled the grandma,
the grandma pulled the grandpa, and grandpa pulled on the turnip.
Together, they pulled and pulled, but even then . . . the turnip would not move.
The dog then called over to the cat, "Hey! Mushka! Come help us!"
The cat pulled on the dog, the dog pulled the granddaughter, the granddaughter pulled
the grandma, the grandma pulled the grandpa, and grandpa pulled on the turnip.
Together, they pulled and pulled, but even then . . . the turnip would not move.
The cat then called over to the mouse, "Norushka! Please come help us!"
The mouse pulled the cat, the cat pulled on the dog, the dog pulled the granddaughter,
the granddaughter pulled the grandma, the grandma pulled the grandpa, and grandpa pulled on the turnip.
Together, they pulled and pulled. . .
. . . POP!
At last, the turnip popped out of the ground, and fell right in front of the grandpa.
Everyone fell over! It was gigantic!
The grandpa stood up, very pleased, and thanked everyone for their help.
"Tonight we will celebrate with a big dinner!" he said.
The grandma boiled water in her biggest pot and cooked a turnip soup
that was so delicious, they talked about it for years after!
In the end, the grandpa was full, the grandma was full, the granddaughter was full,
the dog was full, the cat was full, even the little mouse was full!
