If today was my last day,
my last chance to give a message to a loved one
I would like to talk to them about
making their dreams come true
through the story of a person looking after his tree.
"Imagine a tree, small and weak.
Anything could happen to it...
It might die during a storm,
or due to a lack of water or it might even die
as a result of this person's mistakes...
So why should this person look after it
if nothing guarantees that it will one day become a great tree?
Just as this person was wondering about his tree,
we wonder if it is worth the effort to believe
and move towards our uncertain dreams?
Sometimes we are afraid, afraid of failing,
of being criticized, of being rejected.
And for these reasons we do not dare.
We let years go by waiting for the right circumstances
We would rather make up excuses for ourselves
than dare to believe in our dreams.
The excuse of not having the right body, the right childhood,
the right parents, the right intelligence,
the excuse that it's too hard, that some have already tried and failed...
But you know, TAKING RISKS TO FAIL IS...
Taking chances to learn, taking chances to be proud of oneself,
taking chances to be happy, and maybe to even succeed
Now back to this tree: it's true,
this person is not guaranteed to succeed.
However, if he crushes the tree HIMSELF, the story ends here.
It is guaranteed that he won't MAKE IT.
"If we crush our dreams ourselves, there's no chance left in fulfilling them."
I cannot assure you that you will succeed
by believing and daring.
But I can guarantee you will fail if you stop believing.
So why not go for it?
I know there is this little voice inside your head whispering "You can do it".
And historically many men and women have listened to this voice:
"He was cut from his basketball team and seen as not good enough,
Michael Jordan
He was rejected from film school 3 times,
Steven Spielberg
Fired from a newspaper for not being creative enough,
Walt Disney
She was turned down 30 times and told her book
did not have what it takes to make a great book, J.K Rowling
His voice teachers discouraged him from singing,
saying he neither had the height, nor the voice,
nor the knowledge, Charles Aznavour (French singer)"
I do not mean to say that because they believed in it
they did it, but that if they had crushed their dreams
we wouldn't even know their names.
"Sometimes we do not work towards the achievement
of our dreams because we think it is just too big,
that results will never come or long overdue.
This thinking though overlooks the daily gifts
and rewards of each display of courage."
The purpose of a dream is not only for it
to be fulfilled but for us to feel fulfilled as well.
We can lose our money, our job,
everything we own but we CANNOT LOSE...
the person we have become.
What is worth
becoming the person you are today?
The ability to become the person you deserve to be tomorrow, what is that worth?
A study disrupted me, it was conducted by Bronnie Ware in an Australian hospital
it involved patients in palliative care.
So many of them had regrets: not for the things they did but for those they didn't do,
the risks they didn't take, the dreams they didn't take chances on.
On the last day of your life, who do you want to be?
The person who trampled their tree by fear of failure or the one who may not have
succeeded but can look in a mirror or their children straight in the eyes and say
with tears of gratitude : "I am proud of myself."
When you say YES to your dreams, you inspire the ones you love
to give a chance to their own dreams.
I know that in your past, there was at least one person who managed to
inspire you and made you eager to move on.
Today we have the opportunity to become that person ourselves for someone else.
Tell me, how much is that worth?
So yes, we might have smashed some of our trees but all the others are still waiting for us.
Since we cannot tell if our dreams are possible or not, why not act as if everything is possible?
Not because it's easy or even difficult but simply because the primary aim of our dreams
is not its fulfillment, but its power to make us feel alive and to give us purpose,
RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW.
We all have a choice today, we can take a chance on a dream, we can choose to believe in it
to nurture it, we can choose to take action.
So give your dreams a chance only because maybe it is possible...
and whatever happens you will be proud of yourself.
Many people at the end of their life
regret things
they have not done
And you,
Will you wait the last day of your life ?
