Tips on Writing People of Color | Writing Diversity - Duration: 6:45.

Hey guys, welcome to the second video in my series on writing diversely.

Today, I hope to talk to you about some things you should keep in mind when writing characters

of a different race than yourself.

Most of my tips are probably going to rely on things I know or have experienced personally,

but I've tried to make sure they're general enough to be universal.

First off, let me please say that I don't speak for all black people.

I really shouldn't need to say that, but I feel like I really have to.

Here's the simplest tip.

It's kind of weird to describe brown character's skin colors with food items like coffee, caramel,

etc.

That would be like if I described pale skin as like butter, or coffee creamer, or milk

that had been left out too long and had slightly discolored.

Wow, that last one was a really disgusting and creepy example, but I think you get my

point.

The only time any character should describe another with food terms is if they are a cannibal.

Next, don't include people of color as props for your main character.

It's really obvious and a bit unnerving if the only diverse characters in your story

are your white main character's best friends in an otherwise large and expansive world.

It's even more frustrating if said diverse friend dies to further your main character's

story, whether or not that character is *conveniently* replaced with a new brown friend.

That doesn't mean diverse characters can't die, but it's important to think of the

implication of minorities dying for a white character's growth, even and especially

if your story doesn't claim to carry the same oppressions as our real world.

It's really important to be aware of racist implications even if you're writing a science

fiction or fantasy novel with characters of blue, grey, or green skin.

The colors may not match, but that doesn't make the same issues fade away.

A character of color is still a character.

They deserve to be treated and developed as well as any other character you'd write

about.

If you're writing about a brutal world or an oppressed society, someplace on the brink

of war—it's fine if everyone is treated terribly.

You're not going to get accused of racism if your POC are treated just as bad as everyone

else.

It's when your characters of color are consistently the ones treated worse than any one else that

you'll start to have issues.

Racial oppression is something that is steeped in so many different intersections it's

very difficult to dissect in fiction.

The last thing you want to do is play the White Savior trope, which is exactly what

it sounds like.

Implying that people of color don't have the tools, education, or strength to save

themselves is never cool.

I really don't want to tell anyone what to write, or to say you can't write the

story of your heart, but it's important to consider whether the story you are trying

to tell is built around an experience that's not yours to tell.

Stories involving slavery, segregation, internment camps, are very hard to get right.

I'm not trying to make you feel guilty for things your ancestors did, but understand

that the consequences of those things are not over.

I can trace my mother's genealogy back to the revolutionary war, but my father's records

are much harder to know.

I know what that his last name matches a plantation, but even recent information is damaged by

families pulled apart and records not given as much care as my other relatives were.

Racism even feeds into a diverse author's ability or opportunities to write.

As you know, when I was homeless last year, my biggest fear was not living on the street

but that doing so might cause me to disappear from the publishing landscape.

Everyday I face my computer with deep anxiety that I'm not educated enough to write as

well as my peers and I'm so neurotic about money I feel guilty for buying myself anything.

I'm obsessive about learning about writing and investing in my career because I'm terrified

I don't have enough to make it work.

These worries are likely familiar to most writers, but for me they are deeply entrenched

in ways I've been let down before.

Stories that deal with consequences of racial oppression head on are almost always going

to be more accurate and genuine from a voice that has lived these experiences.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't write characters of color!

Please, please don't be afraid to do so.

Just because some topics might be better suited for someone else doesn't mean your stories

don't deserve a diverse world.

The easiest way to do that is to populate your world.

There's no reason why a side character can't be a person of color.

All you have to do is give them a relevant name and/or identifying features.

As long as all your diverse throwaway characters aren't just maids, janitors, convenience

store clerks, or so on, that's a quick way to make your world more inclusive.

But one liner characters shouldn't be your only diverse characters.

Just as it's important to make sure minor characters aren't falling into stereotypical

or offensive career roles, it's important to be cautious of stereotypes when developing

larger characters.

No one is perfect.

It's okay to mess up, but it's important to look for, catch, and fix these mistakes

as soon as possible.

No one wants harmful representation on bookstore shelves no matter the intentions.

I know all this advice can start to seem overwhelming, but I swear it gets easier with practice.

We've all internalized some prejudices and even I do my best to be careful and attentive.

It's a process to unlearn and improve upon past mistakes, but I've found it not only

makes us better people but better writers, too.

You don't have to pretend that racist ideas don't exist, you just need to address them

in text.

For example, in Harry Potter the Death Eaters often talk about pure blood wizards and refer

to muggles or muggle born wizards as lesser.

If they said things like this and no one reacted or contradicted the statement on the page,

that would be very bad.

However, consistently, from the first book to the very last, most characters are visibly

and instantly disgusted by such a mindset and often immediately respond in rebuttal.

It's important to understand that what your characters say and do is the clearest example

of what your story condones as acceptable to readers.

If you go hundreds and hundreds of pages before ever critically examining harmful language

or behavior, that can be taken to mean that certain levels of intolerance are okay.

Especially if you are writing children's or young adult literature, it's important

to realize the influence your words and ideas can have on developing minds.

I'm not saying that you need to purify your work or become a paragon of virtue and positive

intent.

I'm not saying a lot of things here.

I don't have nearly enough time to cover all the things you should consider when writing

outside your own experience, but I know even a little can help.

I'm definitely open to doing more videos on this subject if you'd like.

Oxfordshire Transport - what we'd do differently - Duration: 2:46.

The council have made a sticking plaster here

at the Wolvercote round about but anybody

who's traveled the route down the A40

from Eynsham knows that this road is

frankly a catastrophe and with the

addition of two thousand extra home at

the garden village up at Eynsham this

will be, again, an absolutely impassable junction.

Liberal Democrat County

Council Bob Johnston told Layla Moran

about our alternative in a film I made

in 2015, We are on the outskirts of Eynsham

and we're on the site of the old branch

line that started in the centre of Oxford and

ultimately went through Eynsham

to Witney, Burford and Fairford. So what's

the idea? Well the Lib Dems have come up

with the, the County Lib Dems, the idea of a

tram train. It's a proven technology looks a

bit like a tram but it's built to a

higher standard and can run on heavy

rail and the point about that is it can

run on dedicated lightweight track with

appropriate signalling you can run them as

little as every four minutes, and in this

case they're quite fast, they can run up

to 70 miles an hour so it will possible

if all the infrastructure were in place to

get from the centre of Witney to the

centre of Oxford in probably under a

quarter of an hour and I'm damned if you

do that at the moment. It's not just rail

solutions Liberal Democrat councillors

like Dudley Hoddinot and myself have long

been supporters of the B4044 Eynsham to

Botley community path. I spoke to him two

years ago about the project. We've got a

a group of activists together they set up a

company, it's now a charity. We have got

4,000 supportive, so there is a lot of support

from Botley, Oxford, Eynsham and the

wider area. The government is giving

money for cycling on a more or less regular

basis. The county council have not

applied for some of these funds and when

they have got money, they're putting

money into projects like the Plain to make it

more cycle friendly which isn't all that

effective because many cyclists don't

think it's gonna be, gonna work

for them to make it safer for them to cycle

around the Plain. The scheme for the Plain

is almost a million pounds but that

million pounds would pay for the whole

of this cycle way to Eynsham.

Two years on and the roundabout is so dangerous

they've had to put up these temporary

signs. Oxfordshire County Council need to

take a long-term strategic plan about

how they address transport and traffic

in the county. It's not good enough to

build 2,000 homes there weren't even in

the local plan and then address how

you're going to deal with the traffic

resulting from them.

Tips on Writing People of Color | Writing Diversity - Duration: 6:45.

Hey guys, welcome to the second video in my series on writing diversely.

Today, I hope to talk to you about some things you should keep in mind when writing characters

of a different race than yourself.

Most of my tips are probably going to rely on things I know or have experienced personally,

but I've tried to make sure they're general enough to be universal.

First off, let me please say that I don't speak for all black people.

I really shouldn't need to say that, but I feel like I really have to.

Here's the simplest tip.

It's kind of weird to describe brown character's skin colors with food items like coffee, caramel,

etc.

That would be like if I described pale skin as like butter, or coffee creamer, or milk

that had been left out too long and had slightly discolored.

Wow, that last one was a really disgusting and creepy example, but I think you get my

point.

The only time any character should describe another with food terms is if they are a cannibal.

Next, don't include people of color as props for your main character.

It's really obvious and a bit unnerving if the only diverse characters in your story

are your white main character's best friends in an otherwise large and expansive world.

It's even more frustrating if said diverse friend dies to further your main character's

story, whether or not that character is *conveniently* replaced with a new brown friend.

That doesn't mean diverse characters can't die, but it's important to think of the

implication of minorities dying for a white character's growth, even and especially

if your story doesn't claim to carry the same oppressions as our real world.

It's really important to be aware of racist implications even if you're writing a science

fiction or fantasy novel with characters of blue, grey, or green skin.

The colors may not match, but that doesn't make the same issues fade away.

A character of color is still a character.

They deserve to be treated and developed as well as any other character you'd write

about.

If you're writing about a brutal world or an oppressed society, someplace on the brink

of war—it's fine if everyone is treated terribly.

You're not going to get accused of racism if your POC are treated just as bad as everyone

else.

It's when your characters of color are consistently the ones treated worse than any one else that

you'll start to have issues.

Racial oppression is something that is steeped in so many different intersections it's

very difficult to dissect in fiction.

The last thing you want to do is play the White Savior trope, which is exactly what

it sounds like.

Implying that people of color don't have the tools, education, or strength to save

themselves is never cool.

I really don't want to tell anyone what to write, or to say you can't write the

story of your heart, but it's important to consider whether the story you are trying

to tell is built around an experience that's not yours to tell.

Stories involving slavery, segregation, internment camps, are very hard to get right.

I'm not trying to make you feel guilty for things your ancestors did, but understand

that the consequences of those things are not over.

I can trace my mother's genealogy back to the revolutionary war, but my father's records

are much harder to know.

I know what that his last name matches a plantation, but even recent information is damaged by

families pulled apart and records not given as much care as my other relatives were.

Racism even feeds into a diverse author's ability or opportunities to write.

As you know, when I was homeless last year, my biggest fear was not living on the street

but that doing so might cause me to disappear from the publishing landscape.

Everyday I face my computer with deep anxiety that I'm not educated enough to write as

well as my peers and I'm so neurotic about money I feel guilty for buying myself anything.

I'm obsessive about learning about writing and investing in my career because I'm terrified

I don't have enough to make it work.

These worries are likely familiar to most writers, but for me they are deeply entrenched

in ways I've been let down before.

Stories that deal with consequences of racial oppression head on are almost always going

to be more accurate and genuine from a voice that has lived these experiences.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't write characters of color!

Please, please don't be afraid to do so.

Just because some topics might be better suited for someone else doesn't mean your stories

don't deserve a diverse world.

The easiest way to do that is to populate your world.

There's no reason why a side character can't be a person of color.

All you have to do is give them a relevant name and/or identifying features.

As long as all your diverse throwaway characters aren't just maids, janitors, convenience

store clerks, or so on, that's a quick way to make your world more inclusive.

But one liner characters shouldn't be your only diverse characters.

Just as it's important to make sure minor characters aren't falling into stereotypical

or offensive career roles, it's important to be cautious of stereotypes when developing

larger characters.

No one is perfect.

It's okay to mess up, but it's important to look for, catch, and fix these mistakes

as soon as possible.

No one wants harmful representation on bookstore shelves no matter the intentions.

I know all this advice can start to seem overwhelming, but I swear it gets easier with practice.

We've all internalized some prejudices and even I do my best to be careful and attentive.

It's a process to unlearn and improve upon past mistakes, but I've found it not only

makes us better people but better writers, too.

You don't have to pretend that racist ideas don't exist, you just need to address them

in text.

For example, in Harry Potter the Death Eaters often talk about pure blood wizards and refer

to muggles or muggle born wizards as lesser.

If they said things like this and no one reacted or contradicted the statement on the page,

that would be very bad.

However, consistently, from the first book to the very last, most characters are visibly

and instantly disgusted by such a mindset and often immediately respond in rebuttal.

It's important to understand that what your characters say and do is the clearest example

of what your story condones as acceptable to readers.

If you go hundreds and hundreds of pages before ever critically examining harmful language

or behavior, that can be taken to mean that certain levels of intolerance are okay.

Especially if you are writing children's or young adult literature, it's important

to realize the influence your words and ideas can have on developing minds.

I'm not saying that you need to purify your work or become a paragon of virtue and positive

intent.

I'm not saying a lot of things here.

I don't have nearly enough time to cover all the things you should consider when writing

outside your own experience, but I know even a little can help.

I'm definitely open to doing more videos on this subject if you'd like.

You've asked many times: "What do we bring in our backpacks when we travel?".

Today, girls, I'm going to show you what I have in my backpack.

Wether it's for 3 weeks, 6 months or even a full year, I pretty much bring the same things.

I always have 2 backpacks:

I have my small day-pack

and my big backpack.

In my daypack, I carry my laptop,

my camera,

my cellphone

and my passport.

So what do I have in my big backpack?

First off, it's a 65L bag.

To be honest, I find it to be a bit too big. A 55L bag would probably be better.

But on the other side, if I need to buy things during my travels, I have spare room for the new items.

Ok, let's take off the rain-cover which I have on my backpack all the time.

It protects my bag.

If it brakes, well, I can just by another one. It's cheaper than having to buy a new backpack!

I always carry hiking shoes

and sandals.

The first thing I have at the top of my bag is all my bathroom stuff.

I keep all the essentials close-by together in my blue pouch.

I always choose the Diva cup when traveling...actually I use it all the time.

It's a lot easier to deal with my period using the Diva Cup.

That way I don't have to buy and carry tampons and pads all the time.

I carry all of my underwear in a small laundry bag.

That way, if I need to wash delicates, I can put them in this bag and throw it the washing machine.

I always carry my big scarf!

I always keep it close when going from one destination to an other

because I never know if i'll be in a bus with too much AC and be very cold.

So I can either us this as a scarf

or like a cover to shield me from the cold.

I also carry this small bag just in case I want to go for a walk in town or whatever

and don't want to bring a big backpack. It's only to carry one or two things.

So I bring this very light back wherever I go.

My hat.

My rain coat which is also a windbreaker jacket.

So I can wear this when it's cold or when it rains.

We never know when it's going to be cold...even in warmer countries!

This is new.

It's an extension cord.

It saves my life!

I have 3 spots to charge my devices.

Often times, in Hostels, there's only one or two power outlets that are available

and we always have 4-5 things to charge.

This is a must.

Peanut butter!

For a quick breakfast.

Light 10L compression bag.

I put my dirty clothes in here.

I can compress it and it doesn't take much space in my bag.

Also, the odour will be trapped in.

Bug repellant and sunscreen.

Very important. I also recommend that you buy your sunscreen before leaving Canada as it will

probably be cheaper than if you buy it in the country your visiting.

Ok, this is an empty plastic bag.

But there's always a time during my trip that I need a plastic bag.

I often pick them up as I go.

It's very convenient if you have shampoo or soap bottles.

Sometimes they can open in your bag while you're moving around

So, travel tip, carry all your liquids in a plastic bag.

Clothes. I have too much clothes.

1 pyjama

1 sport kit

4 tank tops

long pants

dress and jumper

long sleeve shirts

long sleeve shirt and long sleeve pants made of Merino wool.

These dry super quick!

They also don't smell. This means that if I'm doing something that makes me sweat a lot

or if it's cold outside

I can wear this.

I also have a buff that I use as

a hat

or as a neck cover if it's cold.

I also have 2 pairs of shorts and 2 t-shirts.

The other pair is what I'm wearing right now.

Large compression bag.

I split my backpack in 2:

Section #1 is my everyday clothes

and section #2 is everything I might use at some point in my trip.

That way, it doesn't take up a lot of space in my bag.

In this section, it's usually my winter clothes.

All my summer clothes is easily accessible

and all my clothes for colder weather is in my compression bag.

Winter hat and small gloves!

You never know when it's going to be cold and when you'll need a hat.

I like to keep my head and ears warm when it's cold.

Feather coat!

You can pack it up in a small ball... doesn't take a lot of space!

It saves my life when it's cold.

I'm now ready for winter with my hat, my gloves and my coat.

I often use my coat as a pillow.

I roll it in a ball, and if i'm sleeping somewhere that doesn't have a pillow

I can use my coat as a pillow.

I also bring a pair of jeans. There's always a time when it's a little cooler and jeans are great to have.

In here, it's my little electronics kit.

It's small little random things that I carry with me. I put in a plastic bag to protect it from water.

I have an international adapter

A USB key

A pen. Very useful for the plane. There's always a form we need to fill out.

A USB charger

Spare batteries for my head lamp

My camera charger

and ducktape!

There's always something that's going to break so now, you can fix it!

Towels. I always carry 2 sizes:

A large towel for the beach

and a small towel for the shower.

I carry two because if you use your towel for the beach, then it gets dirty and you can't use it for the shower.

And if I didn't go to the beach, then I use the big one to dry myself after a shower

and the small towel to dry my hair.

Bathing suits.

Sometimes I bring two, sometimes I bring 3.

For this trip I brought 3.

A nice pair of sandals that I can wear in town so that I don't always look like a backpacker.

Usually I have a pair of Crocs. That way I have "shoes" that cover my whole feet.

Practical if I don't feel like wearing my hiking shoes

but too cold to wear my flip-flops.

I have a secret pocket.

I won't show it to you because it's secret.

This is where I keep copies of my passport

or my vaccination card.

I always bring it with me

because I never know when I might need it, especially if i'm going from one country to the next.

I also carry a small wallet

in which I keep a bit of US dollars.

Just in case I might need it.

I really don't carry a lot. But at least I have some in case of an emergency.

Sunglasses, obviously.

I always bring a book that I keep in a plastic bag.

Honestly, I don't read a lot, but i'm always happy to have one when I feel like reading.

Head lamp.

Sometimes, when you're staying in a dorm with other people, and you need to find things in your backpack

you can use this instead of turning on the light in the room

and disturbing everyone sleeping.

A small padlock.

It's important that it's small. Sometimes, depending on the hostel you're staying in,

the wholes on the lockers in the room are really small.

If you only have the "school padlocks"

it won't fit.

So this size is perfect and keeps your personal belongings safe.

Carabiner.

I always hook one on the front of my backpack.

If ever I take my shower in the morning and have to leave the hostel for the next destination,

I can't put my towel back in my backpack

because it won't dry well (and stink).

With the carabiner, I can hook on the outside of my bag.

If I want to change quickly between my flip-flops and hiking shoes

I can hook my footwear on the outside of my bag.

There you go! That's what's in my backpack!

WILL.I.AM AND THE BLACK EYED PEAS RELEASING A GRAPHIC NOVEL & NOVEL - Duration: 3:41.

What is up to my favorite readers on the entire internet!

Today I'm going to be talking about some surprising news to some about Will.I.Am and

The Black Eyed Peas releasing a YA Novel and Graphic novel respectively.

If you haven't heard already The Black Eyed Peas said a couple of weeks ago that they

are going to be publishing a graphic novel about Hip-Hop and Aliens…

Let that settle for a little bit Hip-Hop and Aliens.

The title of the Graphic novel is called Masters of the Sun — The Zombie Chronicles and was

written mostly by frontman Will.I.Am.

It's set in Los Angels and is about the city being attacked by Aliens while the human

population is being turned into Zombies.

(laugh) This graphic novel is being published by Marvel in July.

Honestly this sounds like something exactly The Black Eyed Peas would release.

It sounds right up their alley of weird and futuristic that we see all of the time in

their music, videos, and albums.

I am pretty excited to be able to read through this novel it sounds lie it will be the right

combination of weird and well thought out sense they have been working on this idea

for a couple of years now.

They also teamed up with artist Benjamin Jackendoff and Damion Scott.

I don't believe Benjamin has ever worked on any major comic, but please correct me

if I'm wrong, but Damion Scott is highly experienced and has worked on Batman, Robin,

and Batgirl, Web of Spider-Man, and Duppy.

And if you thought this couldn't get any weirder we have new news this week that Will.I.Am

himself will be writing a YA novel about that he describes as "The Terminator" meets

"Harry Potter" whatever the hell that means.

And guess what they decided to call the novel?

Wizards and Robots.

It'll be published by Random House in 2018.

The publishing director said it was supposed to be published as a Graphic novel but it

morphed into a young adult novel.

It's about a 16 year old named Ada who gets caught in an epic battle between ancient wizards

and robots from the future.

Whatever the hell that is supposed to mean.

I don't know how I feel about this news.

Like I'm a fan of Will.I.Am and when I first heard about the news that The Blacked Eyed

Peas were publishing their own graphic novel I was actually excited and the entire concept

sounded cool.

It kind of scares me. We have this mix up of witches and wizards.

We have this mix up between robots and Wizards.

and I'm just trying to figure out where is the correlation and where can Will.I.am

can actually combine these two terms while still giving us a fully flesh out novel.

and I just don't know where the overlap is and where the correlation is between one and the other.

and it feels as if he's throwing both of these terms just for the heck of it to make a novel.

I just don't know if I'm would ever be able to read a Young Adult novel by Will.I.Am.

I'm still wrapping my head around how this is going to work with Will.I.Am being a music

producer with little experience when it comes to novels.

But I would love to hear what you guys think about both of these graphic novel and novel

being published by The Blacked Eye Peas down below in the comment section I would love

to hear what you guys think down below, I'm still myself wrapping my head around this

news.
