Description and analysis of the electric car producer TESLA - Duration: 11:14.
Tesla. Does the name ring a bell? It is
quite likely that you have at least
heard about the car and associate the
name with something electrical. The
American car company is actually named
after Nikola Tesla an Austria-American physicist
born in 1856 whose inventions led to the
construction of the engine which powers
the electrical cars produced by Tesla.
The company is currently the only
runner-up in selling electric cars after
BYD but its name stands for innovation
and revolutionizing the way a car has to
be powered. The company itself is
inseparably linked to and driven by Elon
Musk a very dynamic and visionary young
entrepreneur originating from South
Africa. He is not only known for his
unstoppable engagement to push the
construction of electric cars but also
for his long-term dream of colonizing
Mars with the help of rockets built by a
second company SpaceX. The Tesla company
is doing tons of groundbreaking research
resulting in hundreds of patents. Of
course this research costs enormous
amounts of money and leads to constantly
recurring deficits. Raising enough money
is a must for Elon Musk and radical cost
controls in all aspects of the Tesla
company are absolutely imparative.
However even mark never compromises but
rather convinces investors with his
unstoppable optimism and his visions of
an autonomous mobility powered by
electric energy.
He continues to live his dream and
constantly pushes everybody to leave the
beaten path of economic laws but rather
to realize his visions by producing
newer better and cheaper electric car
models. His life as a CEO of Tesla is a
dance on the razor edge with one side
meaning bankruptcy and the other being a
hero of mass media and financial
investors. His unconditional commitment
for a breakthrough of electric-powered
cars culminated in an absolutely
unprecedented act by releasing all Tesla
patents for the greater good of creating
an environmentally compatible and
sustainable transport of individuals.
Tesla wants to attract customers by
constructing cars comprising a mixture
of revolutionary features like a big
screen on the dashboard or an autopilot
function seasoned with quite a bit of
luxury and eye-catching gimmicks like
retractable door handles. The profit of
the sold cars are partially invested in
research to achieve technological and
economical advances, increasing the
distance an electric car can travel with
one charge and reducing charging times
of electric cars while simultaneously
making the models cheaper thus being a
better alternative to gasoline driven
cars. The question is: Is the company
achieving these ambitious goals? The
tesla model so far are: the Roadster,
Model X, Model S and Model 3 which is being
designed. The price of the roadster from
2010 was 109 thousand US dollars whereas
the price of the model 3 is thirty-five
thousand US dollars. It is quite visible
that so far even musk is achieving his
goal of making electric cars cheaper. Yet
is the ideology of Tesla as good as it
sounds or is this simply wishful
thinking? The very first step to a new
Tesla model is the design of the car.
Chief designer Franz von Holzhausen
challenges his highly qualified
designers until everybody's satisfaction
is reached.
Tesla always stated that's creating
beautiful and attractive cars is their main
goal. They initiated this by creating a
full-blown electric powered luxurious
sports car including some eye-catching
gimmicks like retractable door
handles. These are all small technical
features managed to impress customers as
well as media. After the look of the car
satisfies the designers manufacturing
can be initiated.
Construction of the car takes place in
the Tesla factory in Fremont California.
Most of the parts like the whole car
body, the engine and the vast amount of
electronic pieces of the car are
produced in the Tesla factory where 6000
people were employed in June 2016.
These parts are stamped, transported
painted and assembled almost entirely by
autonomous and multifunctional robots.
The core part of the car, the battery, is
manufactured in a designed factory, the
Gigafactory 1, located in Story County
Nevada since January 2017. By 2018
production of this single factory is
expected to double the world's lithium
ion battery manufacturing. This
production side profits from very low
air moisture and an ideal transport
logistics on-road as well as on rail.
Heat pump technology was chosen for
heating while gas was abandoned. Energy
for this factory is mostly produced by
wind turbines and solar panels. Battery
fabrication requires a lot of energy and a
few rare earth metals. The Model S which
is priced at 68 thousand US dollars
contains 190 kilograms of aluminum which
is charged for by the supplier Alcoa
with 30-thousand US dollars. The aluminum
is made of bauxite mined in Jamaica,
Iceland and Australia. The battery
comprises lithium originating from South
America while Tesla plans to get in the
future all other ingredients like
graphite or cobalt from North America but
currently that's not possible yet. The
production cost of the 60 kilowatt hour
battery is between 10'000 and 15'000 US
dollars at the moment. Tesla also works
with 300 suppliers around the world of
which 50 are in Northern California to
profit from short transport distances.
Newly produced cars are directly
delivered to the customers home or to a
store owned by Tesla. This new concept of
selling cars doesn't include dealers
anymore
which led to some uproar in the USA. Some
states like Michigan Virginia or Texas
meanwhile have prohibited Tesla to use
this way of distribution.
Tesla cars aren't exactly cheep but
Tesla justifies this price with an
extraordinary service. Customers get an
eight year warranty for the car and
battery pack. Problems can be diagnosed
remotely by a mechanic or in service center.
The wide network of supercharger
stations enables owners to charge the
car for just 40 cents per minute which
sums up to $12 for 30 minutes of
charging allowing for a 270 kilometer
autonomy. The main reason to buy an
electric car such as a Tesla is it's
supposed positive effect on the
environment. Tesla's goal is to
accelerate the world's transition to
sustainable energy. Of course this is
just our own statement. Studies have
shown that electric cars are necessarily
more environmentally friendly than
conventional ones. There are many valid
arguments for and against the decision
of buying an electric vehicle. First to
the positive side: Tesla cars don't use
fossil fuels as they are based on
lithium-ion batteries. They therefore don't
produce any emissions whereas combustion
engines release up to 2.5 kilograms of
carbon dioxide per litre gasoline. The
quarrying of said fossil fuels is also
extremely harmful to the environment and
natural supplies are running out.
Production of electricity in contrast is
more ecological depending on the method
used. Lithium-ion batteries may not be very
clean either but Tesla is working on
projects to recycle and reuse them
instead of just destroying them. The high
price of the cars might seem excessive
to some people but the more money that
gets put into research
the faster the development for clean
future proceeds. But as mentioned there's
also a negative side to electric cars
firstly the batteries of the car must be
as light and effective as possible hence
the use of many high quality metals like
Cobalt or Copper. The mining of these metals
has extreme effects in the environment
as the Tesla car uses about 24 kilograms
of copper and 70 kilograms of cobalt. To
mine this amount of copper about 8 tons
of nature have to be sacrificed.
This has ruined larger areas of the
rainforest in the Congo and other African
countries where this element is mostly
mined.
The production of electric car is more
harmful to the environment than a normal
one. It is estimated that you need to use
the car for about 15 to 20 years until
it renders an actual positive effect
assuming the battery wouldn't be
recycled which actually is the case. The
electricity used to power the cars can
come from nuclear power stations and
coal or gas which is very clean. When
looking at the production of the car there
are also other factors to consider such
as the working conditions at Tesla. Many
employees report that working there is
very hard and they often have to work
overtime. In comparison with other
companies like Google or SpaceX their
wages are also rather low but despite
all this 70% of the workers are still
content with their job. They believe that
they do it for a worthy cause and that
their work has a meaning. Another
defining part of Tesla is their
artificial intelligence which can
control and drive cars on its own.
Misinterpretations of this program have
already led to multiple accidents. The AI
makes less mistakes in humans but it
shouldn't decide between the lives of
different people. Its use is therefore
very controversial. The last negative
point about Tesla is their production
quality. Some cars show physical errors
such as malfunctioning doors or broken
mirrors. Despite their high-price this occurs
more often than in an average car.
Elon Musk means to go far with Tesla
yet there are quite a few more bumps and
holes on the road to a future of
electric cars. The way he attempts
getting there seems ambitious so is it
working? His tactic of making electric
cars cheaper as time progresses has
seemed to be working since the cars are
definitely cheaper. But the company
itself is losing money. The rate of
malfunctioning components of the car is
above average and the workers are not as
happy with their overall income in
comparison to companies such as Facebook
or Amazon.
The car requires more materials to be
produced than the average car and the
efficiency of the car depends on the
source of electricity it's charged with.
Yet maybe as time progresses Tesla will
be able to make a profit with their cars
with the help of new technologies. Elon
Musk is betting on science with most of
his ideas and companies and this is a
good thing since it helps us solve our
world problems and let's us advance
and enlarge our horizon. But for now many
parts of Elon Musk's vision seem like
wishful thinking. Simply getting a Tesla
car does not necessarily make you a
better person in terms of your carbon
footprint. You need to switch to clean
energy sources such as water, solar or
wind power. Yet investing money and such
companies is good thing since you can be
certain that a greater part of the spent
money will go into research in
comparison to purchasing a car running
on gasoline
