Sydney-Hobart yacht race result overturned after protest
The grueling Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race ended in sensational fashion when the initial winner was stripped of victory after a protest launched by a rival.
Wild Oats XI was initially crowned the line honors winner, with a record-beating time and a lead of more than 26 minutes over its nearest challenger at the finish.
But after a hearing lasting more than three hours, an international jury ruled on Thursday that the crew had failed to keep clear of its rival, LDV Comanche, when the two super-maxis were still within Sydney Harbor at the start of the race on December 26.
A penalty hour was added to Wild Oats XIs official time, handing victory to LDV Comanche.
Wild Oats XI skipper Mark Richards was stoic after the announcement, accepting the jurys decision.
We are very disappointed but I can see the jurys point of view.
Everyones a genius in hindsight.
We made our decisions and have to live with them today.
Well get back up on the horse, he said, according to the races official Twitter feed.
Wild Oats XI was initially declared the winner on Wednesday after finishing the grueling 628-nautical mile dash from Sydney to Tasmania in a record time of one day, eight hours, 48 minutes and 50 seconds, taking four hours off Perpetual Loyals time last year.
It would have been the ninth time that Wild Oats XI had won line honors -- the yachting term given to the vessel that crosses the finish line in a race first.
But the owner of of second-placed Comanche, Jim Cooney, immediately lodged a protest, based on a maneuver carried out in the early part of the race as the crew steered through Sydney Heads.
The jury ruled in favor of Comanche, saying that Wild Oats XI had failed to keep clear of its rival when the two vessels were on a collision course.
It failed to undertake a two-turn penalty, which would have absolved it of any further action.
After he was handed victory, Cooney said, Its a surprise, a very pleasant surprise to be standing here. The previous day he described the move that led to the official protest.
We were the right-of-way boat: they were the give-way boat.
We hailed starboard; they were the give-way boat and they left it until far too late to tack and they tacked right in our water.
We had to take evasive action or possibly take both of us out of the race.
We could have taken their backstay out; they could have broken our bowsprit. Black Jack crossed the line in third and was also an hour inside the 2016 finish time record.
Lightning Before the start of the 73rd edition of the classic bluewater race, the 100ft super maxi Wild Oats XI -- owned by Sandy Oatley, son of the late businessman and wine maker Bob Oatley -- was struck by lightning in Sydney, damaging a number of onboard navigational computers.
The bolt from an electrical storm hit the 45-meter high carbon mast of the eight-time line honors winner, which was ashore in a cradle at Woolwich dock undergoing pre-race checks.
Race favorite Comanche was berthed next to Wild Oats but escaped any damage.
Two years ago Wild Oats shredded its mainsail in fierce winds while sailing down Australias east coast in the Sydney-Hobart.
Last year it suffered damage to the hydraulics used to operate the canting keel and had to retire from the race.

Illustration. — Pastornicolas/SIPA. Un jeune homme de 17 ans sest rendu en début de semaine à la police, indiquant être derrière le mystérieux commando dultra-droite qui avait revendiqué plusieurs agressions. Il devait être présenté mercredi à un juge dinstruction.
La menace d'un mystérieux commando d'ultra-droite planait sur la Bourgogne.
En réalité, c'est un jeune homme de 17 ans qui s'est spontanément présenté, ce lundi matin, à la police à Chalon-sur-Saône, expliquant être l'auteur de plusieurs attaques au marteau commises dans la ville et à Dijon et de mails menaçants adressés aux rédactions du Bien Public et du Journal de Saône-et-Loire à la fin de l'année 2017.
Ce mercredi, il a été mis en examen et écroué pour « tentative dhomicide, vol à main armée, dégradation par incendie, violence avec arme, menaces de mort, provocation à des atteintes en raison de lethnie ou la confession ».
Samedi soir, Le Bien Public avait été une nouvelle fois destinataire d'un message. Cette fois, il n'est pas question de menaces ou de revendication.
L'auteur explique qu'il entend se rendre aux forces de l'ordre et demande « un contact direct avec le procureur de la République pour obtenir des garanties quant au déroulement de la perquisition qui allait suivre », a déclaré ce mardi au cours d'une conférence de presse le procureur de la République de Chalon-sur-Saône.
Damien Savarzeix a échangé plusieurs messages avec lui afin d'« organiser les conditions de sa réédition ». « Commando de défense du peuple et de la patrie française ».
Finalement, ce jeune étudiant en faculté d'histoire dans la capitale des Ducs de Bourgogne s'est présenté au commissariat de Chalon-sur-Saône un peu avant 11 heures où il a été interpellé.
Au cours de son audition, il a reconnu être l'auteur des agressions avec un marteau commises à Dijon et à Chalon-sur-Saône en septembre 2017, de plusieurs incendies volontaires dans l'enceinte de l'université de Dijon, d'un vol à main armée commis dans une pharmacie vendredi dernier.
« Il a également admis être l'unique rédacteur des courriels de revendication de ces agressions, et donc de menaces multiples proférés dans ces mails », au nom d'un groupe d'abord baptisé « Commando de défense du peuple et de la patrie française » puis « OAS 26 septembre », a poursuivi le magistrat.
L'expéditeur de ces messages affirmait vouloir lutter « contre l'islamisation » de la société et demandait la libération de militants de la mouvance d'ultradroite. Une des attaques avait néanmoins été commises au cri d'Allah Akbar…. « Aucune conviction raciste ou visée politique ».
Le suspect est issu « d'une famille sans histoire », a souligné le patron de la DIPJ de Dijon, Paul Montmartin, qui décrit « une personne seule en souffrance ».
N'ayant jamais connu son père, le jeune homme vit avec sa mère et est inconnu de la justice.
Dans un premier temps, il a indiqué avoir agi « pour être condamné à une lourde peine d'emprisonnement et éviter d'avoir à accomplir de longues études, qu'il ne se sentait pas le courage de mener », a déclaré Damien Savarzeix.
Puis, il s'est ravisé et a expliqué avoir voulu « attirer l'attention sur lui ». « Il reconnaît éprouver une réelle excitation à voir ses actes faire les gros titres. ».
Contrairement à ce qu'il avait écrit à la presse locale, « il dit n'avoir eu aucune conviction raciste ou visée politique », a ajouté le magistrat.
L'étudiant affirme qu'il s'agissait « d'une mise en scène destinée à accroître l'intérêt des médias et brouiller les pistes ». D'ailleurs, aucun document ou objets « témoignant de sa sympathie pour l'idéologie ultranationaliste » n'a été retrouvé chez lui.
En revanche, l'exploitation de son ordinateur « révèle qu'il a fréquenté un large spectre de sites violents, de l'ultra-gauche, de la droite extrême mais également djihadiste ».
Pourquoi a-t-il décidé de se rendre ? L'étudiant « a des difficultés à l'expliquer » rapporte le procureur de Chalon-sur-Saône. Le jeune homme a simplement évoqué « sa crainte de l'intervention d'une « équipe tactique » à son domicile ».
Des expertises psychologique et psychiatrique vont désormais être réalisées afin de « comprendre ces passages à l'acte ». Pour le commissaire Montmartin, il voulait simplement « se rendre intéressant ».
Dans le message envpyé jeudi dernier au Bien Public, il expliquait : « Je suis juste fasciné depuis toujours par le monde policier, judiciaire, et par les faits divers. ».

wisdom and we are able to bring in our angelic energy - our divine wisdom
and help shape our power, our strength. Because we can do that
we're able to move in real flow and real energy. This is another "8" card.
Yesterday we had the Eight of Pentacles, again about being in your flow, being in your
mastery. This is the ultimate "8" card. This is about feeling like you're
in charge of your life. You don't have to be subject to passion and
and drama and being thrown off your keel. As that drama happens
you are able to tame it and gentle it, and channel it in the way that would
best serve you. And because it's serving you
it therefore serves the world. So today is about recognizing you have this
Strength within you. Oftentimes we don't feel very settled because we have
made a practice of not listening to our greatest wisdom, of trying to go
along with other people, of channeling our energy into ways that
weren't quite good matches. So we're always uncomfortable and when
you're like that that lion shows up, and often roars and causes all
kinds of chaos. But if you living with integrity, you're
honoring your deepest truth, and you're channeling this divine energy then you
can still have all that power combined with divine wisdom. And you can
really move in a different kind of Strength. Hopefully today you can keep

as a kid for me it was very hard to make friends and as I've gotten older I know
that I should just keep the people around me that are very important and
don't let negative people into my life I've lost a lot of friends as I've
gotten older in many have passed away it's it was very difficult for me to
keep friends because I was always afraid to get too close to people because it
felt like the closer I got to people I was lost then as a friend and then I
closed myself off from others around me to the point that I just disconnect me
from everything and I just enclosed in myself to the point to where I just quit
socializing and it felt like a job a really hard task to keep friends or do
even gain friends and just felt like a lot of work to try to explain yourself
with somebody and have them get to know you and all the work get to put into it
just felt like a waste of time at some points in my life
and after the friends I did lose it had a pretty big impact on me and I
never really talked to anybody about it and I think that's part of why now I
have a really hard time connecting with people because I just
cut myself from doing that in the first place
but now I've made a few friends that matter to me and I'm doing what I enjoy
and as long as we keep doing the things that we enjoy and just associate with
the people that matter to us then things should be okay
and when I was a kid I didn't I have hardly any friends and a few it did have
they passed away I had one friend and sixth-grade that I was really close to
and I gave him this game to play over the summer he was going to give it back
to me when school started back up and I didn't have his phone number anything
because we were very poor we didn't have any money
so we never had a phone and I had no way of getting ahold of him because I didn't
know where he lived and I couldn't get there anyways because I had no one that
could take me and so once school started back up he he never showed up
and didn't see him anywhere and one day in class one of the teachers asked if
somebody knew of this kid and I told them yes I knew who that is and the
teacher told me that he'd passed away and I never I never knew about it and it
was a really strange feeling to have a close friend and then to have him just
disappear like that
and then after the teacher told us that he passed away I kind of took it uh as I
did with a lot of things in life where I just I'm numb to it to where after
things happen to you so often you get at the point where they don't really bother
you and then as you get older you realize it did bother you
you just never thought about it because you want to avoid that pain as much as
possible and I spent a lot of time alone drawing and doing things but I do
spend quite a bit of time while enjoying really thinking about a lot of things
trying to figure myself out and for me it always seems like talking to people
really didn't do a whole lot of helping myself and talking about problems really
didn't do much for me it was I always had to take action and do things because
talking about it never did anything and that's why I pursued running and then I
got back in control now because it takes my mind off of a lot of things that I'm
thinking about and
I know that um for some people can be hard to keep people around because it
seems like in the world that there's a lot of negative people they don't want
anything to do with you until you have something to offer them but just because
there's a lot of negative people like that doesn't mean should let that affect
you to change you in to being a type of person because there are some good
people out there and we shouldn't be afraid of making friends just because
we're afraid you'd afraid of losing them
but what we should live with is to avoid
the whole I thought that i need to be a certain type of person or do certain
things for people to like us when we should just be ourselves and I had
another friend it was later on this was in seventh grade he also passed away and
then in eighth grade i had two friends that also passed away and it seemed like
each person that I gotten really close to his friends that I made would pass
away from something and then throughout high school I had friends but they they
weren't really close or anything they were they were more like people that I
just talk to you that we had things that were similar you know had similar
interests we had similar hobbies I had a couple friends a ninth-grade those
really close to what ever since I moved I didn't really hear from them at all
anymore and now it's like my best friend is doing the thing that I love doing
which is drawing and the jewelry that is it won't leave me because it's something
I choose to do they'll always be there for me despite my differences despite my
choices despite who I am or any mistakes I've
made
it'll always be there for me and that's why in life if you don't have anyone
find something you love doing make that your passion
