Mathematical Thinking: Crash Course Statistics #2 - Duration: 11:01.

Hi, I'm Adriene Hill.

This is Crash Course Statistics.

In the last video we talked about why we care about statistics.

How we use statistics.

And Statistics is math.

So we thought we'd take a detour from the traditional curriculum to talk about how to

think about numbers.

Really, really big numbers.

Really small numbers.

And how to make sense of them.

We're also going talk about mathematical thinking.

And fighter jets.

INTRO

Chances are, if you are watching this channel,

and certainly if you are commenting below, you are literate.

You understand language and how to use it.

But--are you equally comfortable with numbers?

I'm not talking about being able to calculate square roots in your head.

Or instantly tell whether or not 17321 is prime or not.

(It is.

I looked it up.)

Numeracy is about being able to wrap your head around what it means when politicians

talk about a one-point-five-trillion-dollar budget hole.

It's about getting a handle on how much you should really lose sleep over the chance

of an Ebola outbreak.

And how to compare that risk to the chance of being killed by a terrorist.

Or a snake bite.

Or dying from an opioid overdose.

And what those comparisons might tell us about the time and resources we spend trying to

address those problems.

Mathematical thinking is about seeing the world in a different way.

Which means sometimes seeing beyond our intuition or gut feeling.

Because it turns out most of our guts are good at digesting food and pretty bad at math.

Infants less than a year old can discern between three objects.

I am much more advanced than an infant and can pretty easily comprehend the difference

in one and a hundred.

Even the difference between a hundred and a thousand or maybe even ten thousand.

For most of us, once numbers get really big, we lose our ability to have any intuitive

sense of them.

The distinction between a million and a billion and a trillion is really hard to visualize.

There are 100-trillion bacteria in each of our bodies and non-mathematical guts.

100-trillion.

There are an estimated 10- quintillion insects that are alive right now.

And an estimated 300-sextillion stars in the universe.

So how do you even begin to think about those big numbers and what they mean?

Let's go to the THOUGHT BUBBLE.

Take a minute to visualize the difference between one and one hundred and one thousand

and a hundred thousand and a million.

That's a lot of dots a whole lot of dots.`

There are other good ways to try to make sense of big numbers.

You can try to put the number in context.

The US debt is in the neighborhood of 20-Trillion dollars.

About 323 million people live in the US.

So--the debt owed for each person is about sixty-two thousand and five hundred dollars.

You can turn a big number into a unit of measurement you are more comfortable with.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole, which is the deepest artificial point on earth is 40,230 ft deep.

I have no idea how deep that is.

Until you tell me that it's 7 and a half miles down.

And I can start to picture it.

You can have reference points for big numbers, ready to go.

There are about 100-thousand words in a 400 page novel.

About 46-thousand people show up to Dodgers games in Los Angeles.

I can roughly visualize that.

A million people taking to the streets to protest--might be easier to think of as 21

Dodger Stadium's worth of people.

Or 14 and a half crowds for a Real Madrid match.

Time can help us go even bigger.

A million seconds is a little less than 12 days.

What about a billion seconds?

Do you think you are a billion seconds old?

Are you older than 32?

It takes 32 YEARS for a billion seconds to pass.

And what about a trillion seconds?

Think you or I will be alive after a trillion seconds passes?

Sorry to break it to you.

But no.

We will not.

Even if you are destined to be the Guinness Book of World Records oldest woman.

There is a 100% chance, barring massive medical breakthroughs that you will be dead.

It takes 32-thousand years for a trillion seconds to tick by.

Thanks thought bubble.

A quick note about scientific notation.

Scientific notation can be really helpful for calculating with big numbers, but not

necessarily helpful for understanding them.

Without context, exponents can be non-intuitive if that's a word in their own way.

10 to the 39th and 10 to the 32nd sound like they might be close.

But 10 to the 39th is 10-MILLION times larger than 10 to the 32nd.

We're not going to run the dots on that one.

There are about 7-point-six billion people on earth.

7-point-6 BILLION.

Understanding the sheer number of people out there in the world, can help us make sense

of the common-ness of coincidences or improbable events.

Some statisticians call it the "law of truly large numbers".

The idea here is that with a large enough group, or sample, unlikely things are completely

likely to happen.

Consider this example from statistician David Hand.

On September 6th, 2009, the Bulgarian lottery randomly selected as the winning numbers

4, 15, 23, 24, 35, 42.

And then, four days later, on September 10th, the Bulgarian lottery randomly selected new

winning numbers.

4, 15, 23, 24, 35, and 42.

Exactly the same numbers.

People freaked out.

Bulgaria's sports minister ordered an investigation.Was it fraud?

Something else?

Hand says calm down.

It's just coincidence.

He lays out the math to prove it--but part of the argument here is the law of truly large numbers.

If you consider the number of lotto drawings--every week--around the world--over years and years--

"it would be amazing" he wrote, "if draws did not occasionally repeat."

Speaking of those incredibly unlikely things...we need to talk about the flip side of incredibly

big numbers….

The incredibly small numbers--that can also be hard to comprehend.

Take the likelihood of winning a Mega Millions jackpot in the US.

Right now it's about one in 302.6 million.

The probability that you'd win the jackpot is 0.000-000-003-305.

Let's put the teeny-tiny chance of that happening in some perspective 302.6 million

is the number of seconds in more than 9 and a half years.

So, to borrow here from a very funny post by Tim Urban on Wait But Why that's like

knowing that a hedgehog will sneeze once in the next 9 and a half years and betting on

the exact second... during those nine and a half years... that the hedgehog will need

a tissue.

I'm going with May 2nd, 2:23 and 33 seconds PM, 2021.

Our inability to judge small numbers does more than just cause us to misjudge our chances

of winning the lottery.

It causes us to worry about the wrong things.

To fear the wrong things.

Take your chance of dying from Ebola.

If you live in the US--the chance that you'll be killed by Ebola in any given year is pretty

close to your chance of winning the mega millions lottery.

One in 309.6 million.

It is, among the very, very least likely ways anybody living in the US will die in a year.

Though you are, by some accounts, LESS likely to be killed by a terrorist attack in the

US committed by a refugee.

In a 2016 study, researchers calculated that at one in 3.64 Billion chance in the US in

a given year.

And you far more likely to be die in dozens of other ways.

There is a one in 6 million chance someone living in the US will be killed in a given

year by bee sting.

A one in 708-thousand chance that they'll die falling from a ladder.

A one in 538 chance they'll die in a given year from cancer.

And...not a big cause of death...but did you know people die in sand holes that they or

their friends have dug out at the beach.

They crawl in.

Looking for a little time in the sand hole.

And woosh.

The hole suddenly collapses and they are buried.

Stay out of sand holes.

I'm going to stop because it's stressing me out.

The point here is that it's worth taking the time to think through small numbers.

Cause they can help you figure out what's actually worth worrying about.

And what isn't.

What you might want to act on and what you might want society to take more and less seriously.

My personal take away is that I'd be way better off spending more time exercising and

less time looking around obsessively for poisonous snakes.

Cause the annual odds of dying from a snake bite in the US are only about one in 34

million, but the odds of dying from heart disease in any given year are one in 534.

Thinking mathematically isn't just about understanding numbers better.

It's about asking important questions about the world around us.

And letting numbers illuminate those questions.

One of my favorite examples mathematical thinking is the story of Abraham Wald and the missing

bullet holes.

Let's go to the News Desk.

World War II: Manhattan.

A group of statisticians and mathematicians are hard at work trying to protect American

fighter pilots.

Their task--trying to figure out how to best armor planes without making them too heavy

so our heroes to outrun and outwit the enemy.

In an effort to figure out how to best protect our planes, the statisticians pour over data

of the planes that returned from fighting--looking at where they took damage.

Where the bullet holes were.

That data showed there were more bullet holes in the fuselage and fuel system and not as

many in the engines.

So how do we save our American heroes?

The exceptional statistician Abraham Wald studied the data and came back with the advice...that

surprised everyone to put the armor where the bullet holes weren't.

Over the engines.

Wald realized the bullet holes should have been more evenly distributed over the planes.

If fewer planes were returning with holes in the engines--that meant those planes weren't

returning home.

Wald has the exceptional realization the data wasn't a random sample of all planes.

It only represented the planes that returned.

He suggested the military add armor to engines.

American lives were saved!

Not all mathematical thinking is going to help you save lives.

But it will help you make better decisions- Mathematical thinking can help you see past

coincidence.

It can help you judge risks.

It can help you see the broader relationships in the world.

Thinking mathematically gives us something to go on other than our guts, and their trillions of bacteria.

Winter/Summer Sunscreen For MATURE WOMEN'S SKIN - Duration: 4:04.

Hi there it's Judy from Judy Dee beauty and I wanted to share a little bit about

a sunscreen with you it's January it's Canada it's cold and so a lot of times

we don't think about sunscreens but we have to there is the thought that if

it's not that the if you're not at the beach then you don't need a sunscreen

but that's not true we do need a sunscreen I'm on the west coast and the

Pacific Northwest and we have a little thing that here because it rains so much

we don't tan we rust which you know lately hasn't been true we just went

through an ice storm and we have a lot of cold and if it gets a little bit

colder wait'll snow and we do get snow we have

beautiful mountains and a lot of skiing here we're known for skiing we have

Whistler and all kinds of beautiful scales but that's where you have to

remember your sunscreen so I do go away I get a little bit of a getaway most

times in the winter and that's great but I'm not gone the whole winter and when I

do get away even going for a walk the snow really can reflect up and you can

burn you can get a wind burn but you can really get some damage when you're out

on the scales so especially if you're a little drier there's an awesome

sunscreen I want to let you know about and that is this one here

it's Clinique and it's a number 30 it's oil free but it really doesn't feel like

it's oil free it's really quite rich and creamy it's a

mineral one as well and it has cha it's chock full of antioxidants

so it's for the face which I really like because I don't think that just because

you're using a sunscreen you have to you know not get the benefits of a face

cream so this one here I'll show you it's very nice I'll put some on my hand

there we go so if you've seen any of my other videos I really am quite picky

about sunscreen so I'll use it when I go away to Maui so

that's awesome but I really will use it here because in the winter we tend to

get a little bit drier because of the cold and we're indoors at least I am a

kind of a weather whip so I don't tend to go out as much so you know with the

forced dry air the heat and all that I tend to not go out as much so our skin

does get drier with the cold air so you want something a little bit richer

especially if your skin generally is a little more mature it does tend to get a

little drier this one I found really quite nice so see it disappeared in my

hand really quite nicely it just absorbs it's velvety and you can use this

anywhere but you know but I it's for the face so you want to use it on your face

don't forget your neck or whatever else is exposed in that coal depending on how

cold it is but it's a beautiful face cream with the sunscreen of 30 I use the

30 but there is a 50 the higher the sunscreen it tends to be a little bit

thicker but this one here it didn't leave a big white film you could see it

just disappeared like right away so I would try this one if you're looking for

something that's pretty good for sensitive skin I have quite sensitive

skin but again it's trial and error but I just you know really really liked this

one so it's the Clinique and it's called

Clinique 30 face cream and it has Sun smart it's called the Sun smart so it's

chock full of antioxidants nice for your skin and I really found it was quite

nice and rich especially for the winter time or if you're gonna be you know in a

little bit drier climate it really worked nicely for me so give it a whirl

Hi, I'm Gwénaël Laurent-Guy, proud autist with Asperger's syndrome

STRENGTHS OF AN ASPIE AT WORK

I have a knack for organization, planning, problem-solving.

I have a natural talent for analytical thinking,

analyzing problems, solving them, having an atypical viewpoint

and approaching problems from an uncommon angle.

He doesn't hesitate to tell the client: "No."

." In a way that's… sometimes… maybe not curt but… maybe a bit surprising.

That's something we immediately saw in him

and that's why he was quickly put in charge of complex, demanding clients.

The facts show Gwénaël can do this. He's able to manage his projects

ewhile reassuring his clients, to establish a real connection with them,

to the point that sometimes the project is finished way faster than anticipated.

My major weaknesses are social relations and taking the implicit into account.

Decoding people's emotions is especially problematic for me.

The message needs to be clear, to have a purpose.

If someone implicitly expects something from me, 75% of the time I won't perceive it.

I push people to make the implicit explicit.

It can lead to tensions, especially when there's politics or power struggles hidden behind the true needs.

Gwénaël can be rough, so to speak, in the way he communicates.

I try to listen to him a lot, and sometimes to guide him

on how to interpret his colleagues' reactions, or on how he could have phrased things differently.

But he's also capable of distinguishing between what's allowed between colleagues and what's allowed with the clients.

TALKING ABOUT IT

I discovered I had Asperger's at 36.

A late diagnosis made me understand 36 years of my life,

, 36 years of mismatch between me and society, between me and my close environment.

It was a real joy.

Less than a year ago I decided - I had to -

to tell my managers and my HR director who I really was.

I sensed it was extremely important for him, a matter of life and death almost.

He absolutely needed to go through this to get a clear answer.

When the diagnosis came out it was an unimaginable relief, it was "finally, I know what's going on".

Diversity in all its forms is a subject Netapp's HR director is very passionate about

thus my difference, invisible as it may be, received a very positive welcome.

She tried to learn more about neurodiversity, got really interested.

WHAT MANAGEMENT? WHAT WORK ENVIRONMENT?

I believe a very directive management wouldn't work at all.

Some people, Gwénaël in particular, need to organize their work alone.

He needs his teleworking hours, his own environment, his own tools.

He can be given precise and clearly defined goals,

but I believe the way to reach them should be left free.

Natural light irks me, extraneous noises disturb me,

thus I work with a noise-cancelling headset when in open-space.

75% of the time however, I work from home.

I'm completely autonomous and that's the most important for me.

Micromanagement, as I've experienced too many times, having a manager impose his way of thinking,

his way of doing things, excessively try to control people,

, that's already destructive for neurotypicals, it's even worse for neuroatypicals.

CONCLUSION

It's a waste of talent I think (not trying to sing my own praises),

but Netapp is the only company where I could truly evolve and demonstrate my skills.

Something I could never do anywhere else.

Putting this into words demystifies it, makes it less scary, easier to react to;

and also makes people realize that within these small handicaps are hidden great strengths and abilities that should absolutely be used to their fullest potential.

It is vital for me to display it in public, without shame, to show people the stereotypes are wrong.

Here, see everything I'm capable of. I can make use of a slew of professional skills and human qualities

while being authentic, sincere, while being myself… and, well, autism is a part of me.

I would never get rid of my autism.

It's a part of me, it's been for 38 years, 2 of which I was aware of.

I accept it fully now, but it's always been a part of me, and so I couldn't become someone else.

It's part of why I'm successful today.

And it's why today I'm good at my job.

Air Force Officer Who Witnessed Extortion 17 Attack SEALs Just Said We've All Been

Lied To – Obama Has HELL To Pay

A highly decorated Air Force officer is breaking her silence about the disturbing incident

that occurred back in 2011 that marked the deadliest attack on Navy SEALS in U.S. history.

She claims that Obama's administration covered up what happened to 38 of our warriors in

Afghanistan, when a Chinook helicopter crashed and killed 38 fighters.

She says had it not been for Obama changing the rules of engagement of our military to

protect Muslim terrorists, that our men would still be alive today.

To give you a full appreciation for the absolute atrocity and borderline treason that went

down that fateful day on August 6, 2011 at the hands of Barack Hussein Obama, Retired

Air Force Capt. Joni Marquez is telling her story first hand.

She and her crew were working the dark morning hours on their AC-130 gunship when they were

summoned to conduct a mission she describes "as almost like a 9-1-1 type of a situation."

Circa reported:

The gunship was ordered to fly close-in air support above Afghanistan's dangerous Tangi

Valley, in Wardak Province, assisting troops with the Army's 75th Ranger Regiment who

were being fired on by eight heavily armed Taliban insurgents.

The Rangers had called in for assault helicopters to engage the enemy hiding among the rocky

valley.

The air weapons team fired on the Taliban fighters, but not all of the insurgents were

killed as originally believed.

In her first interview since the incident, Marquez recounts what she witnessed that night

as she was the fire control officer aboard the ship.

Her job that night was to ensure the sensors on the weapons were aligned, so that the her

crew could hone in on the terrorists' targets:

"I had the sensor operators immediately shift to the eight insurgents the helicopters

had taken out," Marquez told Circa.

"Two were still alive."

But what should've been a routine mission to take out the terrorists never happened

because Obama's generals would not give the gunship permission to fire.

She relayed the scene to the ground force commander, but was denied permission to neutralize

the threat.

"We had seen two of them (insurgents) moving, crawling away from the area, as to not really

make a whole lot of scene.

You have two enemy forces that are still alive," she said.

"Permission to engage."

Marquez went on to say that the ground commander's refusal to not allow her crew to take out

the two terrorists with their weapons would then seal the fate of those involved in Extortion

17.

Now with no way to take out the threat, Marquez and her team were left with little options

other than tracking the two enemy insurgents with the surveillance equipment.

She watched helplessly as they made their way through an open field, then to a village

where they began to rally more terrorists to join the fight.

Circa went on:

Meanwhile, a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, with the call sign Extortion 17, was called into

the hours-long firefight.

U.S. Central Command's official investigation concluded that a rocket-launched grenade from

a Taliban fighter hit the Chinook and sent the helicopter into a downward spin.

The crash killed all 38, including thirty Americans and eight Afghans.

Seventeen of the U.S. servicemen were Navy SEALs.

Months before, SEALs were made famous for the killing of Osama bin Laden.

"If we would've been allowed to engage that night, we would've taken out those

two men immediately," Marquez said.

She believes with her whole heart that had her team been given permission to take out

the terrorists, 38 warriors would still be alive today.

"They continued to essentially gain more and more force behind them because they just

kept knocking on doors," she said.

"And the two personnel that initially fled ended up becoming a group of 12 people."

What's even more insane is that pleas and warnings from her crew to return the Chinook

back to base and cancel the mission before the terrorists began firing just fell on deaf

ears by the commanders.

"Whenever we reached out to the Joint Operations Center, they would essentially just push back

with, 'Find a, a good infill location.

Find a good helicopter landing zone,'" said Marquez, adding that by the time Extortion

17 was coming in, everything was mired in confusion.

From there, things just got even worse.

The Chinook was eventually shot down by the terrorists and crashed to the ground.

Marquez watched from her infared monitor as one of the Navy SEALS was then ejected from

the burning Chinook helicopter.

She watched his heat signature fade from red to blue, knowing that she was watching as

his life literally slipped away from his body.

"We had to sit and watch that, and I think that was one of the hardest things that I

had to do," she said.

"That man was, you know, dying on the ground."

Marquez says the pain of living with what happened has taken its toll and she was diagnosed

with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and is in therapy.

Her account of that fateful day has been corroborated by the Defense Department inspector general

in a previously sealed top-secret report.

Her own commander also has verified the story has true.

"If we would've been allowed to engage that night, we would've taken out those

two men immediately.

I mean, it's just one of those things where you know that it could've all been prevented,"

she said, tearing up at times as she recollected that night.

Thirty-eight of our warriors are dead and there is one single person to blame, and that

is Barack Hussein Obama, the treasonous POS who sent these warriors straight to their

deaths that night.

It was because of HIS asinine updates to our military's rules of engagement back in 2009

that essentially gave precedence to the lives of Muslim terrorists over our own military

forces.

"Ridiculous rules of engagement that basically state that you can't shoot until being shot

upon.

A weapon has to be pointed, and essentially fired at you, in order for you to shoot and

you have the proper clearance so that you don't, you know, go to jail, that you're

charged with a war crime," said Marquez, who had reached out to Congress, and some

of the victims' families.

In the end, Marquez hopes that people will share her story and help expose the truth

of what happened that night in the hopes that changes will be made to our military's rules

of engagement that will save lives in the future.

"I won't rest until some kind of justice is served, in a manner of either, you know,

the people that were responsible for that night, for making those calls, come forward

and are honest about it," Marquez said.

"I know that's kind of a lofty goal but, if that's something that doesn't happen,

then obviously the ROE's to change, for them to be realistic."

Hey it's Kyle and I am back with another edition of Midwest Aftermarket News now

we've already talked a little bit about the Detroit Auto Show in the last full

episode of Midwest Aftermarket News if you want to check that one out you can

detail now I want to start by talking about what Ford brought to the Detroit

Auto Show first up as we already covered Ford is bringing the Ranger back to the

States now Ford halted production on the Ranger all the way back in 2012 when I

was 15 pounds skinnier and despite continuing it in other countries they

finally are gonna be bringing it back here because pickup sales are on the

rise in the states with the growth and popularity of other midsize pickups like

the Chevy Colorado and the GMC Canyon so we can only imagine that the Ranger is

going to be a welcome addition to the market now the 2019 Ranger is not going

to just be a rehash with a global model it's actually going to be sporting a

slightly different look with specs better tailored to an American market

presumably with an optional ketchup dispenser. Up next let's talk about the Ford

diesel F-150 and yes you heard me right a diesel F-150 now a few weeks Ford

announced that the 2018 Ford f-150 would come with an optional 3 liter diesel

power stroke engine and right now we're looking at a 250 horsepower and a max of

440 foot-pounds of torque now Ford began dealer orders back in

mid-January and deliveries are expected to begin in the spring now let's go to

the opposite end of the spectrum Ford announced at the Detroit Auto Show that

they would be investing 11 billion dollars in electric cars that's more

than double what they had already invested in that field previously now

keep in mind this doesn't necessarily mean that you can expect a fully

electronic F-150 for 2019 but more likely the companies will focus on

hybrids rather than full electrics at least for the time being either way we

can't help but be curious as to what that investment will produce
