So a civilian is
complicated in and of itself any time an individual is going through
a divorce they are likely to encounter issues involving property division issues
involving spousal support, alimony and post separation support
child custody and child support issues those are prevalent in any kind of divorce
whether your dealing with civilians or whether or not there's a military component to it.
Now military divorces are even more complex than a civilian divorce. There are issues related to
property division that involve military pensions in this day and age there aren't
many employers that provide traditional pensions anymore to their employers but the military still has them
and they are prevalent in the military. So in a military divorce it is important to deal with pensions
in the context of the divorce and perhaps an even more important and involved distinction
between military divorces and civilian divorces is when there are children involved.
because when there is a service member involved in a child custody case they are going
to have very significant impacts on their ability to parent their child
if they are deployed or if they are moving routinely.
There is special legislation and there are statutes enacted
that protect military parents involved in child custody cases.
