My Top 17 Books of 2017! (Mostly Bisexual/Queer!) - Duration: 19:18.

My name is Danika, and today I have my top 17 of 2017. So I'm a little bit

embarrassed about this being my top 17 of 2017. I actually made a video where I

ranted about how silly it is to continue to add numbers to your top 10, top 15, top

17 every year. And yet, here I am. I read about 115 books this year and I just

couldn't narrow it down to my top 10, so I ended up with 17—I could have done

more! There were more that I wanted to talk about. But I figured that was the

last acceptable stopping point. Probably no one wants to watch a top 20 of 2017

video. So here I am with my embarrassing, hypocritical top 17 of 2017. I read about

90-95% of the books this year from the library, so I don't have many of my top

ones with me. For number 17 I'm going with Difficult Women by Roxane Gay. This

is a collection of short stories. This is an extremely dark collection and should

have trigger warnings for rape, violence, as well as a scene of quite extreme fat-

shaming. It's definitely dark and difficult and has a lot to say about

misogyny and kind of the ways that women try to survive it, and being a difficult

woman: being someone who doesn't live up to what we expect women to be. It also

has moments of fabulism in it, which I wasn't expecting: it's not entirely

realism. There are also some queer stories—not

a ton of them, but there were a few, which I was very happy to see. And there are some

moments of hope in this collection. One story actually completely warmed my

heart and I just sighed happily after I finished it. No surprises that is one of

the queer stories. This is one that is not easy to get through, but I thought it

was really well done. It was very powerful. And Roxane Gay is definitely an

author I'm going to continue to follow. And number 16, I have Knit One,

Girl Two by Shira Glassman, and if you're as into the queer book internet as I am,

you will definitely be familiar with Shira Glassman. She's a fantastic author

who does the Mangoverse series, which is a queer fantasy series with lots of

lesbian and bisexual women characters. This is a little novella of hers that's

just a really cute, fun story. It has a lot of different niche interest groups

represented. So, obviously there's the queer women content, both lesbian and bi

women. The main character and the love interest are both artists: one is a yarn

dyer and one is a painter. There's also a lot about fandom, there's some fat

representation. This feels very slice of life and realistic. There's definitely a

romance here, but that's not everything that's happening. It's just as much about

the two main characters' relationships with their siblings or with fandom. This

was just a really fun, light read. You can read it in one sitting! It's only

about two dollars on Amazon, I think, so you should check it out if any of that

sounds interesting. After that is Star-Crossed by Barbara Dee. This is a

middle grade book with a bisexual girl as the main character, which is amazing,

and pretty much a first. And you can tell just from the cover,

which has the two girls dancing together, her and her crush, and that's so sweet, and

it's just incredible to have a middle grade book that has queer representation,

and that shows that on the front cover. This is also super cute and it's about

them acting out a Shakespeare production: Romeo and Juliet. It actually has a lot

of interesting conversation about Shakespeare and about the production.

There's very minimal homophobia in the book. It's cute, it's accepting, and it's

more about the dizzying experience of having a crush in middle school than it

is about coming out. For number 14 I have Meanwhile, Elsewhere which is a

collection of fantasy and sci-fi trans short stories. At least 10 of the 25

stories have sapphic women as the main characters, which is nice. This is a mix

of genres and of people are represented, but there's definitely more trans women

represented, and more sci-fi than fantasy and trans men or non-binary people. As

always with a collection like this, there is a mix: there are some stories that

really spoke to me. Some of them I felt like I could write whole essays about them:

they're just so interesting, the ideas addressed. And some stories completely

lost me, and I can see how other people would love them, but they were

just not personally appealing. Trigger warnings for this collection would

include transphobia, transmisogyny, rape, violence, gore, and suicide. In particular,

there was one story that had the main character who was raping people, and that

one I found particularly distressing. I have my full review linked down below, as

well as my reviews for any of the queer women books that I talk about in this

list. This was a huge book that covers a lot of ground.

Topside Press continues to put out really fascinating books that I will be

picking up as soon as they come out. My next one is sort of a silly pick, it's My

Lady's Choosing: An Interactive Romance Novel by Kitty Curran. This I read as a

review copy. I'm not sure if it's out yet. It's super fun. It's—as the title

suggests—a choose your own adventure romance novel. And there is one path

where you can have a lady love interest. I expected to just follow that path and

only read the queer part, but I actually ended up backtracking and following

pretty much all of the different paths you can take, because I just found them

really fascinating. They all have their own plots and mysteries, and you kind of

go into different genres depending on which love interest you go after. Also

there's an option you can take where you basically end up in a lesbian pirate

gang, so definitely try to find that one. This was just really fun, and I enjoyed

spending the whole night just following along the different choices.

I think choose your own adventure books— they should be more common. They're so

fun. Then there's Tomboy Survival Guide by Ivan Coyote. Ivan Coyote is one of my

favorite authors. They have this incredible writing style that is

beautiful and also approachable. They just really show this conviction to

remain kind even when the world is cruel. Also this book is beautiful just as an

object. There's like a ruler for the back cover, there are all these little

diagrams throughout. So of course I love that. Tt's also interesting because

there's kind of this idea in queer culture that being queer takes place in your

20s and that's about it. You don't really hear a lot from anyone

who is either a queer kid or a queer adult, who is past their 20s or max 30s.

Ivan Coyote is in their 40s and it's really nice to see this depiction of a

queer future, of what it looks like to survive that queer adolescence and grow

up. And they also have this much more nuanced understanding of queer politics

having seen it through more time. I can't recommend Ivan Coyote's books strongly

enough, but this is a great one to start with. It has a lot about gender and

politics, but also just personal stories. They are, above all, an amazing

storyteller. Another kind of fun one was the Mockingbird series by Chelsea Cain.

I am including this as one entry because this series was cancelled far too soon.

There are only two volumes, but the second volume... only the first half is

actually Mockingbird, and then they just fill in the volume by throwing in

an Avengers comic that had like the old Mockingbird character that has nothing

to do with the series. I would highly recommend just skipping it: just get the

first and second volume, read the actual story all the way through, and then stop

and just put it down. The first volume has this puzzle box structure where the

first issue you keep seeing Mockingbird as she has brought in on these random

doctor appointments, and she is getting pulled from whatever she was doing at

that moment, so you just kind of see her in scuba gear in one part of the issue

and, then the next part she'll have just like a little army of corgis around her,

and then through the next issues, you see what she was doing when she was

pulled into the doctor's office each of those times. So you get to see it expand,

and kind of see how these stories slot together.

I loved the main character. She has a great, sarcastic sense of humor.

I laughed out loud several times. I also liked that she was a scientist. I liked

the first volume best, but the second volume has a story that includes

mer-corgies. And it has her wearing a shirt that says

"Ask me about my feminist agenda" on the cover, which apparently was hugely

controversial, and also it has just the ideal ending for a love triangle, Another

fun one was the Lumberjanes series. I read volumes 1 through 6 just in the

last month or so. You might actually remember, in my queer comics collection

video I mentioned that although I've been collecting these, and they seem

great, I hadn't actually read them. So after that I did correct my mistake: I

did read them. And I love them! They're just so fun.

The first volume is probably my least favorite? Which is not saying much

because I still really liked it. It's just these fun fantasy adventure story

is set in an all-girls camp, and there's a great diversity of characters here,

including a trans character. It isn't until, I think, a couple of volumes in

that you find out that she is trans. And there is also a romance between two of

the girls, which is just very much in the background for most of the series, but

they do get their own storyline in I think volume 3, and they do kiss on

volume 6. So it's kind of a little bit of ambiguous at first, but it gets to be

much more blatantly a romantic relationship. But sweet and fun and I loved

it and I will continue to read all of these and hopefully it just continues forever.

And then of course I have to mention The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. This is

one of those books that honestly could have been half as good and it still

would have been great. It's complex, it's nuanced, it has distinct, well-rounded

characters. I really enjoyed the dynamics that were happening between characters.

It's, of course, thought-provoking and absolutely wrenching, powerful—I'm

running out of adjectives. So you've heard the hype about The Hate U Give,

and I would have to echo it. So another one that I read the advanced reader copy

of and I don't think it's out yet is Kim Reaper: Grim Beginnings. This is a comic

about a part-time Grim Reaper and the girl who has a crush on her. This was so

ridiculously cute. I was just giggling to myself as I was reading it. Becca is

just the most adorable main character in a comic I've ever seen. She's got the

little hair buns, like kind of Sailor Moon style. And she has, like, a little tummy

and you can see her stomach outline—you can see just the little outline of her

tummy and [stutters] that... just affected me. So much. I'm like: here is this character who

is so cute. And she has a tummy! And you can see it!

And she's still, like, wearing adorable clothes and is not bothered by it, and

everyone knows she's super cute. And it's funny and goofy and it has a sweet

little romance, as well as these ridiculous adventures, including fighting

a bodybuilder and his army of cats, and you should just check it out. What more can I say?

So apparently I either only know or only

love books that are either extreme of dark and difficult and fluffy and fun,

because the next book on my list is Hunger: A Memoir of My Body by Roxane Gay,

and yes, this is the second Roxane Gay book on this list. This is a dark,

sometimes brutal book about her relationship with her body. And it deals

a lot with trauma, especially rape, disordered eating, fat hatred, but despite

the subject matter, I kept getting pulled in by her casual, conversational style.

Roxane Gay is bisexual, and even though that's not the main focus of the book,

she does talk about her coming out and some of her relationships with other

women. This was an incredibly powerful book, but I would really think about

before going into it how it would affect you to read about disordered eating,

about fat hatred, about hatred of your own body, about rape. But overall, I

would highly, highly recommend this one.

Bouncing back to something a little more

fun: River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey. This is a killer hippo Western. It's kind of

an alternate history. There was a proposal at some point to bring hippos

over to the U.S. to be used as meat, and this book explores what that would have

been like if it happened, and the U.S. was basically overrun by feral hippos. It has

this caper storyline with this diverse cast of mostly people in color, mostly

queer people. It includes a nonbinary character who uses they/them pronouns.

And the main character is a bisexual guy who's also a person of color.

This was super fun, very quick to get through, though it does go a little bit

dark in places, and there is some gore. But it was such a quick, exciting read.

This was definitely one of the books that I had the most fun reading this

year. And from fun to exploring your own mortality: my next book is Smoke Gets In

Your Eyes and Other Lessons From the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty. I would

say this is the book that changed my perspective the most this year. I've been

following her YouTube channel, Ask a Mortician, for a while, and then I listen

to the audiobook, which was fantastic. She has a great voice for both the

narration and the YouTube videos. Basically this book is about how we in

the West have a really fucked up relationship with death and with

mourning and grief. That our relationship with death is built around denial and

how much that hurts us. That we don't have healthy rituals in place to deal with

grief, and with accepting our own mortality. Basically this is about being

death positive, which if you're not familiar, sounds completely ridiculous,

until you read this book, or until you watch some of her YouTube videos and see

how it actually makes perfect sense. That we need to have a better relationship

with death. That we need to think about it more, and that will help us to live

better lives. It is a memoir and she does talk about some of her mental health issues

and how this journey with the death industry affected her and how it got to

some pretty dark places. I thought it was incredibly told and had a lot of really

important ideas that I will be considering long after I finished it.

Number four on my list is Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado.

This is a collection of short stories. It blends feminism, queerness, and fabulism.

This one I also listen to it as an audiobook, but I wish I had read it in

print, because there's a novella-length story that is all of the episodes of SVU

rewritten, and although I really liked the idea, and I did start to come around

on the story by the end of it, it was so long, and I

know what I was gonna end, and I don't watch Law & Order SVU. So if I had been

reading it in person, I would have just skimmed it. And I would have liked

to spend more time with the other stories that were very thoughtful and

that I would have liked to kind of read a little bit, and then think about, and

then move on. This book is very bisexual, which I was really happy about. I

realized that this year I actually read a lot of bisexual books, which makes

sense because it's also the year that I've really come to terms with being bisexual

and accepted that label, so I actually have fewer lesbian books on this list

than usual and more bisexual books. And that's kind of nice, to have more books

that reflect my own identity. But almost every story in this collection has the

queer woman as the main character, usually a bisexual woman. I think my

favorite story was the first one: "The Husband Stitch," which retells the urban

legend about the girl with the ribbon around her neck. If you read Scary

Stories To Tell In the Dark, you'll remember that one, but this really

fleshes it out, and also weaves in all of these other urban legends and stories,

and really exposes the misogyny at the heart of a lot of those stories. This

book is beautifully unsettling, gorgeously written, it's definitely a

book that makes me want to pick up anything she ever writes.

Number three on

my list is Everfair by Nisi Shawl, which I have difficulty talking about

because it's so ambitious, and far-reaching, and nuanced, and complex.

It's a steampunk, alternate history of the Belgian occupation of the Congo. It

also has several queer women as the main characters. It switches between different

characters' perspectives. There's tons of point-of-view characters—I actually lost

count. But it means that you get to see these issues from multiple perspectives,

through different lenses. This spans decades, and it covers politics, war, love,

grief, betrayal. The steampunk element is actually a lot more in the background

than I was expecting. I would say that the relationship between the two women

narrators is at the heart of the book. It is not a simple, fluffy, feel-good romance:

it's complex, it's deeply flawed, but it's also passionate and genuine, and you see

how these two people try to fit together, and all the different things that play

out in their relationship around, again, race, power dynamics, and their specific

places in the world. This is a very thoughtful book. It took me a while to

get through. I think some people criticized it for not having enough

action? But that's not really what it's trying to do. It's much more of a

meditation on this idea. It almost acts more like a thought experiment. Again,

I'll link my full review down below, because I have many, many thoughts about

this book. It definitely blew my mind.

Another really fun one was Sugartown

by Hazel Newlevant. This is a queer, polyamorous, BDSM, fluffy love story. It's

fun, it's super quick: this is a tiny little book. What I loved most about this

book was that people treat each other with kindness! They check in. They are

flawed, but they communicate, and they try to do their best by each other. The art

is also super cute and warm, and I just wanted to crawl into the pages

and curl up there. I love this. This is now definitely one of my go-to happy

reads. And finally, my number one read of 2017 is Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars:

A Trans Girl's Confabulous Memoir by Kai Cheng Thom. I had never understood what a

fictionalized memoir was until I read this book. It blends together in fairy

tale elements—beached mermaids—with this hard, unshakable truth. The narrative of

poetic, dreamlike prose describes transmisogyny,

racism, police brutality, murder, self-harm. It really reworks the idea of the trans

memoir and of memoir in general. And it ended up just being a beautiful, brutal,

unforgettable read.

So those were my top 17 of 2017. I'm sure this was an

incredibly long video ,so thank you for sticking around for the whole thing. Let

me know what some of your favorite reads from 2017 were and what you thought of

these if you've read any of them, and thank you for watching!

BREAKING Trump Just Stuck It To Every Welfare Leech In America With HISTORIC Move - Duration: 30:44.

BREAKING Trump Just Stuck It To Every Welfare Leech In America With HISTORIC Move

Every day millions of hardworking Americans do their best to provide for their families

and ensure that there is a roof over their heads and food on the table.

However, while these honest hard workers are doing what they can to make sure that their

families do not go without there are plenty of others sitting around waiting for a government

handout.

Over the last eight years, under the previous administration, Barack Obama expanded the

welfare program to unprecedented levels.

Instead of rewarding those that work hard, Obama penalized us and rewarded those who

only milk the system.

Now, President Trump is in office, and he is not messing around anymore, and he is ready

to tackle the corrupt welfare system in a way we have not seen before.

Barack Obama did his best during his presidency to destroy America by creating a welfare state

dependent on the government.

Obama and his socialist buddies know that the way to bring America to its knees is to

foster a welfare mentality within our society.

If an entire generation can be brainwashed into believing that the government is responsible

for taking care of them, they will readily give up more of their rights for false security.

Now, because of that mentality, there are millions of families living off welfare instead

of looking for work, and President Trump has had enough of that made a BIG change to the

welfare program that has liberals screaming foul.

When the welfare program started its, intentions were to help families who fall on hard times

get back on their feet.

Sadly, though that has changed and numerous individuals and families are on welfare despite

the fact they are capable of working to take care of themselves.

These welfare families apply for food stamps, housing aid, cash assistance, and medical

insurance which is all paid by U.S. taxpayers who are often themselves strapped for cash.

In recent reports, many of these welfare recipients have come forward and claimed that it is more

financially lucrative for them to be on welfare than to work.

"The current welfare system provides such a high level of benefits that it acts as a

disincentive for work.

Welfare currently pays more than a minimum-wage job in 35 states, even after accounting for

the Earned Income Tax Credit," which offers extra subsidies to low-income workers who

take work.

In 13 states [welfare] pays more than $15 per hour."

So, with all that in mind, President Trump has asked Congress to tackle welfare reform

and that is not all.

Earlier last year, Trump brought back the Bill Clinton era initiative that required

able-bodied individuals to work in exchange for food stamps.

And, now more states are getting onboard with welfare reform.

Alabama has reported that they saw a significant drop in new welfare cases, an 85 percent drop

and other states have reported similar findings.

Here is more from Louder with Crowder:

Similar changes were implemented in select counties in Georgia and by the end of the

first three months, the number of adults receiving benefits in three participating counties dropped

58 percent, according to the Georgia Public Policy Foundation.

In October 2014, LePage announced that able-bodied adults would have to find work, spend 20 hours

per week in a work program, or perform community service for six hours a week.

Food stamp participation declined 14.5 percent from 235,771 in January 2014 to 201,557 in

January 2015, according to the state.

20 hours per week in a work program is light work.

Six hours of community service per week is less than an hour a day.

Hardly taxing.

Incidentally, taxes are the revenue source of these handouts.

Asking people to work for money which was taken from people who work for money seems

the fairest route to go.

If we're going to continue stealing from people who work to give to others who prefer

to perfect their yoga corpse pose.

Namaste here, thanks.

Yes, we're talking about "able-bodied" adults.

Back off with your "BUT THEY'RE VICTIMS!" awareness ribbon campaign.

Most of these people are victims of rampant laziness.

Or severe cases of I'd Rather Not-itis.

Kansas saw a 75 percent decline after implementing work requirements in 2013.

In addition, nearly 60 percent of former beneficiaries found employment within 12 months and their

incomes rose by an average of 127 percent per year, according to the Foundation for

Government Accountability.

There is no reason that anyone in this country should be living on welfare when they can

work.

The welfare program was constructed to act as a cushion for families who fall on hard

times and need a little help to get back on their feet.

In no way was welfare intended to be a career choice, and when you take it away, people

will do what they have to make sure they eat.

After all, there is no shame in a hard work and doing your best to ensure your family

is taken care of properly.

Share if you think welfare programs should be cut across

the board!

U.S. President Trump tweets he "too has nuclear button, much bigger and powerful one" - Duration: 0:57.

Let's start with U.S. President Donald Trump's latest tweet on the North Korea issue.

Responding to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's New Year's address about him having a nuclear

button on his desk,...

President Trump has come out swinging in his now customary unconventional fashion.

Trump tweeted "Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him

that I too have a nuclear button."...

before adding that his nuclear button is (quote) "a much bigger and more powerful one",...

and that unlike Kim's,... his actually "works."

Trump's response to a statement from the North Korean leader again raises tensions in the

brewing confrontation between Washington and Pyongyang,... despite South Korea moving to

open talks with the regime.

N. Korea could conduct another ballistic missile test within this week: U.S. officials - Duration: 2:07.

The U.S. ambassador to the UN said she's heard reports of a possible North Korean missile

test happening soon.

A couple of U.S. media outlets have reported... that Pyongyang is preparing to launch another

long-range missile... and the test could be carried out as early in the coming days.

Oh Jung-hee reports.

U.S. ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, told reporters... tougher measures need to be drawn

up against North Korea... should the regime conduct another ballistic missile test.

(English) 2134 "As we hear reports that North Korea might

be preparing for another missile test, I hope that doesn't happen.

But if it does, we must bring even tougher measures to bear on the North Korean regime.

// We will never accept a nuclear North Korea."

Her remarks come after some U.S. media outlets reported... that North Korea's getting ready

to conduct another missile test -- possibly later this week.

CBS News reported on Tuesday... that the North seems to be in the early stages of a launch

cycle for another intercontinental ballistic missile.

The activity was detected at the same site where the regime fired its Hwasong-15 ICBM

in late November -- some 30 kilometers north of Pyongyang.

And if there is to be a test,...

CBS reported... it's likely to be within this week or early next week.

Since last week, CNN has also reported... citing "multiple U.S. officials," that there

are new signs of the regime preparing for another missile test.

And it's not likely to be a satellite, but a ballistic missile.

Such signs come at a critical time on the Korean peninsula... when South Korea and all

the relevant parties in the region are trying to keep things calm... ahead of the PyeongChang

Winter Olympics to come in a month.

Through his New Year's address on Monday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signaled that

he's willing to send a delegation to the Games... and Seoul offered to hold inter-Korean high-level

talks next Tuesday.

The South Korean government is still waiting for a response from North Korea over Seoul's

proposed bilateral talks next Tuesday.

For more on the current situation we go over to our Ji Myung-kil who is on the phone for

us at the Unification Ministry.

Myung-kil fill us in.

Hello Mark.

Well, as you mentioned we haven't received a response from Pyongyang... yet.

The Unification Ministry did say the government was trying to make contact through a South-North

hotline at Panmunjeom, on the inter-Korean border, in the morning and in the afternoon...

and will continue to do so until there is a response.

Currently... inter-Korean communication channels have been cut off...

including a military hotline... in protest of Seoul's shutdown of the Kaesong Industrial

Complex in February 2016.

When asked what Seoul would do if Pyongyang does not give a reply... the unification ministry

spokesperson replied the government had high hopes that Pyongyang would respond to South

Korea's offer.

Seoul's offer for talks comes as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said on New Year's Day

that his country was willing to participate in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Myung-kil... then if talks do take place...

what would likely be on the table for discussion?

Well... for now... it is hard to say what issues will be on the table for discussion

and to what extent, as the two sides would have to iron-out what topics are relevant

to the talks.

One thing up for discussion is... the North sending its athletes to Pyeongchang for the

Winter Olympics, which is due to start in a month.

It is possible that they would also discuss inter-Korean family reunions during the Lunar

New Year holidays which fall in February.

Now... last July...

Seoul had proposed for military talks to ease border tensions and holding reunions for families

separated by the Korean War... but that proposal was unanswered.

The unification ministry spokesperson however stressed the need to spur inter-Korean civilian

exchanges... although several South Korean civilian groups' bids for aid and exchanges

have been rejected by the North.

Boosting job creation among SMEs key for 2018: experts - Duration: 1:57.

South Korea is expected to see steady economic growth this year.

But that growth might not be reflected in the job market,... as the number of jobs created

is expected to be at a similar level to 2017.

Song Ji-sun explains why.

Given the current growth trend...

South Korea's GDP per capita is expected to hit 30-thousand US dollars this year for the

first time in the country's history,... with economic growth continuing to stay in the

three-percent range growth for two consecutive years.

But that doesn't mean more people will find jobs this year.

The number of new jobs will only hover at around 300-thousand - a similar level as last

year.

Job prospects in the public sector look good - as the government has budgeted for hiring

new public workers - but it's not so bright for the private sector.

The raising of the minimum wage - now at seven dollars an hour, up 16 percent from 2017,

is considered a major factor.

(Korean) "Companies are likely to be reluctant to hire

new, young entry-level employees as they see more uncertainties that can raise employment

costs."

Experts say smaller companies are key for job creation,... as small and mid-sized companies

created over 2-million jobs in the past five years - accounting for 90-percent of new job

positions.

(Korean) "The government must push for further deregulation

for small and mid-sized companies so that they can create jobs in a sustainable and

stable manner."

They also point out that one-time incentives or temporary subsidies are not enough - and

practical incentives must reward companies that actively create jobs.

Frigid air moves back in _ 010318 - Duration: 2:22.

Good afternoon.

According to the weather agency, last month was the 7th coldest December since 1973, .. and

I have feeling this January could be top ranked within the top 7 as well...

Frigid air has moved back into the nation and upper regions had some bone chilling morning

lows with more regions under a cold wave advisory.

The wind chill is making it feel even colder than the actual temperature, so dress extra

warm.

Seoul will top out at the freezing mark, Daegu and Gwangju will see highs a couple notches

lower than yesterday at 4 degrees.

The skies will be clear for the Seoul area for the whole week, while Jeju and southern

provinces will see a mix of rain and snow this week.

With that, let's take a look at the international weather for viewers around the world.

While most regions in South Korea will see temperatures a couple notches lower than yesterday,

most cities in North Korea will have sub-zero afternoon highs but bright skies.

As for the rest of Asia, operations at the Delhi airport were suspended on the New Year's

holiday weekend, after the visibility level on the runways dropped below 50 meters.

A foggy start on this Wednesday will give way to some sun later on.

Meanwhile, warm January temperatures are in store in Melbourne before a scorcher hits

the city on Saturday with highs in the forties.

Heading to North America, the extreme cold made Tuesday morning a tough one for people

in Chicago heading back to work for the first time since the holidays, Wednesday is going

to be a freezing as well.

As for South America, those in Bogota will have on and off rain as the rainy season is

well underway.

Taking you to Europe,..those in Berlin and Paris will see frequent rainfall this week

but temperatures will be bearable.

Lastly to Africa, major cities will have good amount of sunshine with a high of 29 degrees

in Cape Town.

That's all the weather update for now.

U.S. responds to warming inter-Korean ties - Duration: 1:57.

The U.S. government has responded to North Korea's suggestion to open dialogue with South

Korea ahead of next month's PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Washington says it will continue its policy of maximum pressure on North Korea and closely

cooperate with South Korea.

Park Soyun reports.

U.S. President Donald Trump is sounding open to the possibility of inter-Korean dialogue,...

after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made a rare overture to South Korea in his New

Year's address.

Trump tweeted that the U.S.-led campaign of sanctions and other pressures on the regime

were beginning to have a "big impact" on North Korea.

Mentioning the possible dialogue between the two Koreas, Trump said it was "perhaps good

news, perhaps not-- we will see " The White House, however, seemed unmoved,...

with its press secretary saying that Washington's "policy on North Korea hasn't changed at all,...

and the U.S. will collaborate efforts with South Korea for a "unified response" to potential

inter-Korean dialogue.

The State Department, too, showed little enthusiasm, echoing its will to denuclearize the peninsula.

(ENGLISH:Edit No.2085) "If the two countries decide that they want

to have talks, that would be certainly their choice,...Kim Jong Un may be trying to drive

a wedge of some sort between the two nations, between our nation and the Republic of Korea.

I can assure you that that will not happen ... We are very skeptical of Kim Jong Un's

sincerity in sitting down and having talks.

In New York, the U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley ripped Kim Jong-un's seemingly

conciliatory gesture, calling it nothing more than a front.

(ENGLISH:Edit No.2134) "We don't think we need a Band-Aid and we

don't think we need to smile and take a picture.

So North Korea can talk with anyone they want, but the U.S. is not going to recognize it

or acknowledge it until they agree to ban the nuclear weapons that they have."

Haley added that North Korea could stage another missile test,... but gave no further details.

Two opposition parties launch joint body to start official talks for potential merger - Duration: 1:54.

A major shift in Korea's political paradigm could be on the horizon at the National Assembly

-- with the center-left People's Party and minor conservative Bareun Party paving the

way for a potential merger.

The two opposition parties launched a joint committee this morning to start official talks

for their integration.

Kim Min-ji reports.

Korea's third and fourth largest political parties launched a joint committee Wednesday...

that will act as a bridge for a potential merger.

The development comes after a string of closed-door meetings between two lawmakers from each side

-- the center-left People's Party and the minor conservative Bareun Party.

Details are in short supply,.. but it's likely they'll form a brand new party.

The committee will be tasked with discussing the specifics of the procedure... as well

as determining when to hold a national convention to vote on the merger as well as the timing

of the new party's launch.

The process picked up steam... following a nationwide ballot among members of the People's

Party last week -- in which those that took part said they backed the plan to join forces

with the Bareun Party.

If the merger goes through, the two sides would make up the National Assembly's third

biggest negotiating bloc -- and also put two former presidential candidates and political

heavyweights -- Ahn Cheol-soo and Yoo Seong-min -- in the same party.

Eyes will be on how this will impact legislative affairs -- and whether the new party could

become a stumbling block for the ruling Democratic Party of Korea or the main opposition Liberty

Korea Party.

The People's Party is already seen to have growing influence as the party with the deciding

vote -- and a merger will empower it even further.

At the same time, it will give the Bareun Party more say in parliamentary affairs...

after it recently lost its status as a negotiating bloc following the defection of several lawmakers

to the main opposition party.

Court to review whether to issue arrest warrants for two opposition lawmakers - Duration: 1:00.

Two lawmakers from Korea's main opposition Liberty Korea Party could face arrest as early

as Wednesday evening.

The Seoul Central District Court began holding arraignment sessions this morning.... for

four-term lawmaker Choi Kyung-hwan... on suspicions of accepting bribes,... as well as two-term

lawmaker Lee Woo-hyun... on allegations he accepted illegal political funds.

The court will likely reach a decision on whether to issue arrest warrants later this

evening or early Thursday.

Prosecutors requested arrest warrants for the two back in December,... but the process

was delayed... as sitting lawmakers are immune from criminal prosecution or arrest while

a parliamentary session is open.

They can however, be arrested.... through a consent by a majority of fellow lawmakers....

reached through a vote.

The arrest motions were reported during last Friday's full parliamentary meeting,... but

a vote was not held since the December parliamentary session closed the same day.

People begin the new year by donating blood - Duration: 2:11.

It's the start of the new year and many people are looking at ways to give back or do a little

"charity therapy."

There's a quick and easy way of helping out... giving blood.

Our Park Hee-jun dropped by a donation center in Seoul,... where she met with some people

who cherish the gift of life and the gift of sharing.

It's the start of a new year.

Many people are busy making New Year's resolutions and thinking of the changes they want to make

in their lives.

But some are already making changes that bring warmth to others and could even save someone's

life.

(standup) ed: Mark "Here at the Gangnam Blood Donation Center,

people are kick-starting the new year by donating their blood for people who desperately need

transfusions.

By donating blood, they're improving the lives of others, while doing something amazing for

2018."

People beginning their day by donating blood.

After going through some simple blood tests, they step into the clinic to begin their donation.

The center makes a lot of effort to make sure donors don't feel as if they are in a hospital

environment.

Some people are scared of needles, but nurses try their best to help the donors overcome

such fears.

This man is donating blood for the fourth time,... and regularly donates to help the

great number of people who need transfusions.

(Korean) "I realized that I hadn't done much to help

other people.

I saw on the news that there was a serious blood shortage, so I came to offer my help."

By investing a little bit of time and blood, they are contributing to securing blood supplies

that have dropped considerably in recent years.

They are also literally saving the lives of others in their community.

(Korean) "Donating blood is an act of kindness that

anyone can do easily and that can help other people.

I came here to donate my blood because I wanted to help those around me who are in need."

Blood banks see shortages especially in the winter, due to the cold temperatures and schools

having winter breaks-- meaning less donations from young people who make up a large proportion

of the donors.

But by making voluntary blood donations, these people are helping to reduce that shortage,

and are inspiring others to do an act of kindness for those in need.

Iran's Supreme Leader blames 'enemies' for anti-government protests - Duration: 1:52.

The Supreme Leader of Iran has blamed the country's "enemies" for stirring up unrest

in the country.

Anti-government protests have been going on for a sixth day and have now left at least

21 people dead.

Ro Aram has more.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei finally broke his silence on Tuesday, accusing Iran's enemies of "joining

forces" with the Iranians, blaming them for protests turning violent.

(Reuters) Edit No2069 "....Look at the incidents in the past few

days All those who are against the Islamic Republic, those with cash, politics, weapons

and intelligence apparatus, join hands so they may be able to create troubles for the

Islamic regime...."

He did not mention any enemies by name but Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the Supreme National

Security Council, said the United States, Britain and Saudi Arabia were behind the riots.

President Trump called the Iranian government "brutal and corrupt" in a second tweet on

Tuesday.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley also said Tehran's allegation that foreign enemies

were behind the protests was "complete nonsense.

The protests began last Thursday in the city of Mashad over the weak economy and a jump

in food prices.

They have since expanded nationwide with a more political agenda and have become the

largest challenge to Iran's clerical leadership since the country's disputed presidential

election in 2009.

Officials in the capital Tehran say more than 450 protesters were arrested there in the

last three days and hundreds more were detained around the country.

Judicial officials have said they would be severely punished; with one prominent judge

even warning that some could face the death penalty.

Egypt extends state of emergency for three months - Duration: 0:41.

Egypt's president has issued a decree to extend a nationwide state of emergency for three

months as fears of terrorism still linger.

The country's state news agency said on Tuesday that the extension will start from the 13th

of this month in order to help tackle what it called the dangers and funding of terrorism.

Egypt first imposed the current state of emergency last April after two church bombings killed

at least 45 people.

It was extended twice - once in July and again in October.

The country faces an ISIS insurgency in the North Sinai region that has killed hundreds

of policemen, soldiers, and civilians.

Success of the 'me-media' era - Duration: 2:26.

Smartphones and easy internet access led to a surge in one-person media.

Instant content creation, interaction with creators... these are some of factors fuelling

the evolution of the industry that may still be in its infancy.

Won Jung-hwan reports.

User created content has been around for several years, but the latest trend within this area

has been the increase in live-streaming.

Viewers can interact directly with live-streamers, asking questions or making requests such as

asking the live-streamer to sing a particular song.

This so-called 'il-in media', or 'me-media' is growing by 30 percent each year in Korea.

Expert Yoo Jae-hyuck, author of the book 'Era of Me-media: Global Stars', explains why this

type of user created content is becoming so popular.

(KOREAN)

"If you look at YouTube video stars, they can approach viewers and satisfy their needs

much more easily and quickly than a traditional live broadcasting service through live-streaming

shows."

Unlike traditional mass media platforms,… 'me-media' creators can produce personalized

content, and share and interact in real-time with their viewers who can participate and

influence the direction of the content.

This 'Me-media' content can often be on very specific, personalized topics, which aren't

often seen on mainstream media.

They can also be ridiculously popular.

One Korean content producer, Benzz, eats more than 5000 kilocalories of food during each

episode of his show, and has nearly 2 million subscribers on YouTube.

But the growth of 'me-media' has led to some negative issues.

One major problem is the lengths some 'me-media' producers will go to in order to attract more

viewers.

(KOREAN)

"As everyone can post or create videos, there is a lot of inappropriate content on 'me-media'

platforms.

Some creators try to increase their number of viewers or subscribers by taking off their

clothes."

'Me-media' has been attracting much attention in the Korean media contents industry in recent

years,... with a potential audience size larger than that attainable by traditional media

such as television.

However, the market itself is still in its early stages in Korea, and there is a need

for more distributing high-quality content for the further growth of 'me-media'.

A CONFESSION: My Absolute Worst Study Habit (ft. Koala) - Duration: 9:34.

It's so empty...

Hey Guys, I'm Loretta and welcome to my channel KemushiChan!

Today I'm in my empty, barren room

to share a confession!

I'm Loretta, a girl from the U.S.A

and I'm a graduate student here in Japan!

At the beginning of 2017 I made a video

about the 7 study habits I was going to QUIT in 2017

and specifically you MAY remember me saying:

"I am also guilty of CRAMMING!"

Cramming do not cram! Study a little bit every day.

I was going to stop cramming and finally get some sleep!

But in reality???

Oh I just remembered I have a presentation tomorrow!

Eh.. I'll just do it in the morning!!

I have been doing exactly the one thing

that I told you guys NOT to do!

I am completely guilty of cramming

not sleeping, and not taking care of myself!

The thing is, I have a very personal story for you guys

that I HAVEN't shared becuase I've been embarassed!

Okay, here's the truth!

The JLPT, the Japanese Language Proficiency Test

There's a top-tier level called the n1 which is like the maximum level

This is what can get you jobs in Japan

and proves that you hit the top most mark.

The truth is.. I failed!!

I did NOT pass the N1

and to this day it kind of haunts me because

I missed the mark by 3 itsy bitsy points

over STUPID mistakes!

The secions I NORMALLY do well on (reading and listening sections)

I was so slow and sluggish

that I ran out of time and didn't answer all the questions

as for the listening section,

it started playing, and I don''t know what happened,

but I just completely... spaced out!

Nothing! I did not hear a single thing!

Then suddenly it's like: "Select your answer: A, B C or D"

meanwhile I'm like - wait WHAT was the question?!

Meanwhile the next question already started

and that kept happening over and over again!

I just completely FAILED

I don't want to talk about it.. how embarassing!

So I have to redo that!

There are so many times

Where I missed the mark or didn't do my best

or even if I got a good grade at the end of the semester

With thins that were really important to me

I just failed because I simply hadn't slept

or a mental mess and hadn't taken care of myself!

I'm gonna get sharper and quicker

And I'm gonna get back to level of performance that

I know I'm capable of if I just had normal regular sleep

So that's why I'm just so excited to make this video

because well, today's video is actually sponsored

by a company that saw that I'm studying

and asked if I wanted to get some better sleep!

and test out a bed and see if that helped out at all!

There's an Australian company called Koala.

They make these like innovative

You jump on it, and your wine glass doesn't tip over, don't disturb your neighbors, sleep miracle beds,

OBVIOUSLY I'm not going to pass that up!

The other day I was doing some Christmas shopping

But when I came back there was a truck outside

and it was Koala!!!

Sound like a truck is outside...

It's here???

Or not???

I have been staring at it all day

and I'm so excited to finally get in there!

Let's do it!

It even comes with a Koala!

It's alive!!!

It's soooo cozzzyyy!

I don't think I'll be getting up for a while!

It feels like cool to the back, not like not cold

but nice and like... refreshing almost!

Hear that??

You're supposed to be able to jump on one end without disturbing the other end

but I want to see if that's really true

I can't believe that that would actually happen...

Let's give it a test!

Alright, so here's the wineglass.

I'll put it right there where you can see it

It's moving a little bit, but like

Honestly, it seems pretty like sturdy!

This might actually work!

PLEASE DON'T SPILL!!!

Alright, this is the last time you ever saw it!

A dry bed!!

I'm going to jump!

THREE

TWO

One!!!!

Wait... seriously?!

Okay, keep a close eye on it!

Are you kidding me with this?!

Oh my gosh!!

It's real water and it didn't spill!

Dude, this is the real deal!

They weren't joking, it does not move at all!

*chokes*

I was jumping all OVER that bed!

Yeah, so just like right off the bat.

The bed is just---- I love it!!

I didn't expect it to be this comfortable,

and I didn't expect it to actually beat the wine test!

That's ridiculous!!

It's comfortable, it's firm

But it has this like squishiness top to it

that grabs and pulls you in and never lets you go!

I'll never be on time to anything after this

I'll just be in bed all day!

For me, personally, being here in Japan

I never bought something as big as a bed before

because like....what if it doesn't work?

Can you even like throw it away or return it?

But when Koala asked me if I wanted to test out this bed

they pointed out that anyone who buys this bed

you have a 120-day...or NIGHT trial, I should say

to make sure that you actually do like it

The fact that it comes in this box

I thought it wouldn't fit the door or break something

but it's not that difficult to carry

and you can get it around sharp corners if you have a staircase

And Japan is notoriously MOIST and mold prone

which is another reason I never bought a big bed

I'm just glad that they pointed out it's mold resistant

being mold resistant is a huge plus for me

When I was first hearing about Koala

They sent this list of perks and really good points

The beds are 100% recyclable

with the trash situation in Japan that's a huge plus

it's also vegan and 100% animal cruelty free

So much so that, for every bed that is purchased

A portion of it in Japan goes to the WWF and

Also to their koala sanctuary

where they're taking care of Koala's

Not this guy, though! He's mine!

I've never seen a bed that acts like this before

and it's JUST in time too because

I have a new semester coming up

and I have to start my graduate thesis in 2 weeks!!

So thank you so much to koala for sending me

the best present ever

I can finally start getting some sleep!

And ...yuugen jikkou!

I can finally start practicing what I preach

and finally get some good sleep and life balance!

Hopefully.. I'll start improving all across the board!!

So I'm going to leave a link to koala below

if you want to check out the beds for yourself

I highly recommend it - seriously!

If you have any questions or want me to test it again

I'll just jump again in my next school vlog!

I'll just jump some more if you want it!

Thank you so much for watching today!

I'll see you guys well rested in my next videos!

Okay, bye!!
