Youtube daily report May 3 2017

Hi, this is Kate from MinuteEarth.

Humans are not the fastest mammals on the planet, but over really long distances, we

can outrun every other species on land… except certain dogs.

The greatest ultramarathoners on the planet are husky/malamute mixes bred for sled racing:

while pulling a load, they run five back-to-back marathons in a day, day after day, for more

than a week.

That's because of the totally unique way they turn food into energy.

Like all mammals, sled dogs rely on two types of fuel: there's glycogen, which comes from

carbs and sugar, and is quick to ignite and fast-burning, like natural gas.

And there's fat and protein, which come from...well...fat and protein - which are

not that flammable and burn slowly, kind of like logs.

Glycogen can power a runner on its own for periods of short, intense exercise, but because

it burns up fast, long-distance runners rely mostly on their supply of slow-burning fats

and proteins.

In order to turn fats and proteins into energy, though, most mammals need to also keep burning

a small but steady supply of glycogen.

And that turns out to be a serious problem, because the body's glycogen storage tanks

are pretty small, and converting carbs and sugars into glycogen takes a little while.

So runners burn glycogen faster than they can make it - if they run for long enough,

their supply will inevitably run out, and they'll bonk.

Sled dogs never bonk, because early in the race, their bodies somehow shift over to burning

fat and protein without needing to use any glycogen at all.

And since fat and protein can be turned into energy pretty much immediately, the dogs can

refuel throughout the race without ever worrying about running out of glycogen.

We still don't know how this fuel-burning trick works, but we do know that after 9 days

and 1000 miles through the snow and ice, most dogs finish the race with the same baseline

vitals that they started with.

In fact, unlike human ultra-athletes, who often need months to recover, the dog teams

that do best in one ultrarace are often the ones that have just recently returned from

another one.

When it comes to feats of endurance, sled dogs turn the competition to … mush!.

DJI MAVIC PRO | Cinematic grading tutorial + FREE LUT - Duration: 4:19.

Wow....... that was ma third day out with my Mavic PRO

Welcome back to Mauro's Films, and a big HI to all of you! New subscribers!

I made a promise to make a color grading tutorial of the D-log footage from the Mavic without luts

So i went out with my wife to make a trip and grab some footage

I will inform you that this is how i grade my footage, and it's not an universal grading tecnique, i just learned this way and works just fine for me

And you know what? I made a LUT for D-log footage out of the grading so you can get it with the coupon code „freemymavic" for free on my store so chek out my links on the description od the video

The footage that i will colorgrade is filmed in Cinema 4k D.log (the maximum resolution o fthe mavic in 24frames per seconds) with ND 16 filter attadched on due to the bright sunlinght!

so shall we jump in on the tutorial

Here we are in premiere pro and you can see how it looks with the grading that i made made and the dlog footage only

So i will delete the grading and start from the beginning on the color tab menu of Premiere Pro 2017

First of all i raise the contrast to get a more range on the colors

Than i bring up the whites to get the brightest higligts a punch

After that i lower the highlights to bring back details on the bright right side of the image

Than i bring up some soft shadows to maintain details and get a more pleaseant cinematic look

Than i lower the deep shadows with the blacks control

When we are finished we can add some saturation to add some colors in the shot dragging the saturation slider to the right

Then i like to warm up the footage on my taste and play with the tint slider a little bit

After that on the creative side i add some fadded film look

Sharpen with the slider a little bit the image, bring up some vibrance and mazbe a little bit more of saturation because i just like some saturated images

On the curves tab i make a three point s curve to get some more punch in the image rising the left side a little bit to get a fadded cinematic look

Sometimes i plaz with the other colors of the RGB curves for my taste

On this image i touched some greens on the colour weels for the shadows and did not mess with the HSL secondaries but onlz added a sight vignette to te footage

So the you go. A nice looking footage in 5 minutes without luts.

And if you wanna know how to import the lut that i provided for download, just download it from my page

go to the creative lumetri tab menu, select browse and find where you saved the LUT after downloading, and open it. Just that simple

And with the intensity slider just add or lower the percentage of the applyed lut

Thanks all you guys for watching, stay tuned because i will make so much more in the future

I wish you all guys a great day and just get out and film something. Until the next time! Bye!

Dungeon boosting system - explanation and tips - Duration: 5:12.

Ahoy!

From what I've noticed there's a lot of confusion regarding the dungeon boost system among players.

Let me clear that up a bit, and give you a general idea of when it's worth boosting a dungeon.

First of all, to boost a dungeon, you must move the little slider in the dungeon window before entering.

The items needed to do that, are called gemstones of transcendence, and they are available for purchase from any grocer NPC.

The dungeon level can be boosted by a maximum of 10, for which you need 25 gems.

So why would you boost the dungeon? Basically, there are 2 reasons. 1 is exp, the other is loot.

There is a phenomenon that when you hit a chest, it drops more than 1 item.

This is called multi drop. The chance for the chest to drop multiple items is determined by the number of people in the party,

and the boost level of the dungeon.

The more people, and the higher the level, the more chance you have to find more items.

Should you boost your dungeons? Well that's up to you!

However, there are a few things you should consider, and I hope I'll be able to help you in your decision.

First, keep in mind that boosting the dungeon increases the difficulty.

For each gemstone you use, the level of every single monster is increased. So at level 5, they become 8 levels higher, whereas level 10 increases monster level by 25.

Therefore, experience gain can be greatly increased this way.

However, also note that boosting not only increases the level of the dwellers of that dungeon, but various stats,

like Health, Defense, Attack, and even Penetration!

So basically if you can finish a dungeon without even using a health potion, you should be fine with boosting it,

but if you regularly die or get close to death in normal runs, you might want to reconsider this.

The second thing to take into consideration is the amount of time it takes for you to finish a run.

With the difficulty rising, the time it takes to finish it increases as well.

If your run takes longer than 15 minutes, then another couple of minutes probably won't make much difference.

And if it's the opposite, with a run taking less than 2 or 3 minutes, then you probably won't mind if it takes half a minute longer for a chance at more drops.

Third, keep in mind that the gemstones cost 100 thousand alz each.

hat means boosting a run to level 10 costs an extra 2.5 million + the entry item.

So if the entry is practically free, you'll pretty much pay only for the gems.

If the entry costs a small fortune, then a few hundred thousand alz for the gems won't make so much difference.

The fourth, and last thing to consider, is the number of chests, or if there are any special chests.

For example Altar of Siena B2F is mainly farmed for the bracelet pieces, and going through the whole run just for that last chest is quite annoying.

On the other hand, DX dungeons with 2 chests might make you wonder if you want another force core for your time.

Well, I believe those are the most important points to give some thought.

Now, an example or two on the dungeons that I think are worth boosting, or not.

As I mentioned Altar of Siena B2F is a good idea because if the run already takes 10 minutes,

you'll have higher chance to find another bracelet piece in exchange for a couple more minutes and a few hundred thousand alz.

It's certainly faster than doing another run.

Eternal Chaos Arena is often boosted for the experience points.

Keep in mind, that the number of fragments you get won't be increased though.

Regular Chaos Arena however doesn't give you anything.

The chests there drop a fixed amount of items, which is not affected by multi drop chance.

I mentioned DX dungeons, as something that's totally not worth boosting.

Awakened DX dungeons, however, as well as normal and Awakened Hazardous Valley already cost several millions,

so in my opinion more chance to find epic loot is worth the extra time and money.

Watch out for the difficulty though!

Also from what I've heard and experienced, your chance to find elemental stones in ADX dungeons is also higher if you boost the dungeon,

and there's even a chance to find more than 1 at a time!

And last but not least, boosting the dungeon's level can make it more fun.

Try Altar of Siena B1F with a full party at level 10 and you'll know what I'm talking about.

You might start feeling nostalgic, being killed by random monsters on your way, or with bosses wiping out the whole party with a spike attack.

Anyway, I hope I've covered everything about dungeon boosting.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask them in the comments!

Clueing for looks in Yume Nikki #1 - Introduction [ENG/PL] - Duration: 16:39.

Hello guys! My name is Sherly and today,

in this new series, we are going to clue

for looks

"he's... he's clueing for looks"

In Yume Nikki!

I'm going to talk about theories,

possible explanations, symbolism, cultural references

and many other things.

We're going to try to understand what Yume Nikki

could be - since we have no idea what it really is

and we will never know...

But first of all I have to make some

warnings and disclaimers so bear with me...

Warning number one (not really a warning tho): please excuse my English.

I am NOT a native speaker

So if I make some grammar or pronounciation mistakes

just let me know in the comments

but keep in mind that English is not my first language

so also excuse my accent, obviously

If in the middle of the video you'll find yourself thinking:

"what is this crazy bitch blabbing about"

I am extremely sorry, I'll try to make

English subtitles for every single video

but since it's really time-consuming I

can't promise anything.

And excuse my cursing too, I am only a human

you may hear a couple of "fucks" in this series.

And the last thing about languages:

There is a lot of Japanese terms and names

mentioned in the universe of Yume Nikki

and my knowledge of Japanese language is

very limited...

In fact only two words are know are...

...probably sushi and tsunami

so I will most likely slaughter all the names.

feel free to correct all my mistakes in the comments

If you speak Japanese.

Warning number two:

I'm going to talk about things that might be triggering

or just unpleasant for some people

so if you feel like you can't handle mentions of:

rape, domestic violence, self-harm

suicide, dysphoria, trauma, etc

you might want to close this video now.

If you stay, just keep in mind that Yume Nikki

is a really disturbing game

and this series is not meant for people under 18.

And the last thing! Very important!

I'll try to put a name of the creator somewhere on the screen

every time I'll be covering some sort of theory

regarding Yume Niiki

However, some of them are so popular

that it would be impossible to actually find out

who came up with them first.

Also, I have several explanations stuck in my head

but can't find a name of the author now

so I hope you will forgive me, Mr. Author...

Or Mrs.

The point is, most of the theories I'm going to tell you about

in this video were not made by me - I just want that to be clear.

Same goes for all sorts of fanarts

including manga, light novel and fan-made animes.

All the source links will be in the description

So let's get started by simply explaining

what Yume Nikki is!

It is a freeware, surreal game

Made by Japanese developer KIKIYAMA

released in 2004, with the last update in 2007

It was created using RPGMaker 2003 but it has very few RPG elements

It is actually considered

to be one of the most original games

ever created an RPG maker

and it has a huge fanbase.

it is mostly famous for it's disturbing, somber atmosphere,

symbolism and incredible amount of fan theories

that explain the mysterious plot of the game.

Yume Nikki literally means "dream diary"

and it follows a young girl called Matotsuki

or more precisely: her dreams.

Our main goal is to gather 24 so-called "effects"

scattered around Madotsuki's dreamworld.

For some reason

Madotsuki doesn't leave her room

and her activities are quite limited.

She has a Famicom console, with only one game,

TV with no signal,

some books

(but you can't interact with the bookshelf),

mentioned dream diary,

and a bed.

The only way player can gather all the effects

and get "The Ending" event

is to go to sleep and explore Madotsuki's dreamworld.

There is no other plot than that,

There is no dialogue

all we have to do is find the effects.

The creator himself stated that Yume Nikki

is "simply an exploring game"

and that is has no other purpose or plot

so every single theory I'll cover in this series is fanmade.

There is no "right" or "original" interpretation,

There is no canon established:

everything is made by fans, for fans.

The game is not expected to be updated:

there is no contact with KIKIYAMA since 2008.

They are not responding to e-mails

and have not updated their website ever since.

Before they disappeared,

they gave their permission to Project Yume Nikki

who created merchandise a light novel and web manga.

however both light novel and manga are

just artists and writers interpretations

and they might be different from KIKIYAMA's

original idea about the game.

But let's talk about things that might have inspired KIKIYAMA

to create such a bizarre, unique game.

There is a book i will call "gamification" for short

because it has a really long, smart title

that you can find somewhere in the description.

It has a whole chapter about Yume Nikki

and the author of that chapter implies

that dream journal (I mean the game) or the title

"Yume Nikki" might have been inspired by

"Ten nights of dreams" - series of Japanese short novels.

It seems kind of far-fetched to me

since the only thing connecting Yume Nikki to Ten Nights

is a dream theme and there are no other similarities

(not that I know of)

Obviously they were both made in Japan but that's it.

These novels are definitely worth

checking out but I'm not really sure if

they were such a huge inspiration?

I might be an ignorant doofus right now

sorry

The other title "gamification" mentions

is LSD dream emulator and this one is so

much more believable to me.

LSD is also a Japanese exploration game

and it was based on a real dream diary.

Yume Nikki has a little different vibe to it,

but those two games have a lot in common:

both are about exploring the dreamworld,

both are really unsetteling, eerie and unique.

There are also some similarities in world design

- or at least I see them -

but I think I'll cover them later on.

Finally, while doing research for this episode

couple of months ago

I stumbled upon a theory on wikipedia

that mentioned Japanese TV show

about a man called Nasubi.

Encouraged by the article I've watched the whole show

hoping to find some more similarities (I didn't)

let me tell you what the show is about very quickly:

a man called Nasubi (it literally means "eggplant")

was challenged to stay alone in the room.

All of his personal belongings were taken away from him

including his clothes.

His goal was to win 1 million yen in prizes.

He was given postcards, pens,

magazines and radio so that he could enter contests.

The only thing he was allowed to possess

were things that he won.

He remained alone, naked,

in front of the camera for 15 months

opening his door only to receive mails and packages

Now, you can watch the show yourself or

check out the theory on Wikipedia

Yume Nikki and "A life out of prizes"

share a lot of similarities.

The most obvious one is isolation.

Madotsuki is locked up in her room just like Nasubi.

She either refuses to leave the apartment

or is locked inside of it

so just as someone pointed out on Wikipedia,

maybe Madotsuki is forced to stay in her room,

because she's a part of some sort of experiment.

maybe someone locked her up?

You can't really tell

because when you try to leave,

she shakes her head.

We do not know if she does that

because she's simply trying to tell that

she doesn't want to leave or if she

can't physically open the door, like it

was portrayed in manga.

Well, there is a lot of theories

regarding her isolation.

The most popular one is that Madotsuki is in fact Hikikomori

It is a Japanese term for social withdrawal

you can probably read the Wikipedia definition right now

and I'll put a video about Hikikomori phenomenon

in the description.

Basically, this theory says that Madotsuki chose

- more or less - to stay in her room.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say

that social anxiety or withdrawal

are something we choose - I am just trying

to emphasize that - according to that theory -

she was not kidnapped

and she's not being held in her room against her will by someone.

"Gamification" suggests that

KIKIYAMA was a hikikomori

and by sharing Yume Nikki with the world

they invited us to explore the world of

the Japanese recluse.

It also pointed out that we know absolutely nothing

about KIKIYAMA, that's why I keep referring to this

mysterious developer as "them", because we

don't even know what gender they are.

This theory seems solid and reasonable

so I personally think it's one of the

most probable explanations.

One more thing needs to be said about Madotsuki's isolation.

Notice that there is no kitchen or loo in her apartment.

This led some people to believe,

that Madotsuki is never in fact awake.

Her eyes seem to be closed in real world too

and the money she can gather in dreamworld

do not disappear when she wakes up.

I just wanted to point these things out

but we are going to look into this particular theory

a little bit later.

Alright, let's talk about Madotsuki herself

and let me call her Mado from now on

because her full name is painful to pronounce, sorry.

Again, I want you to remember

she might not be a hikikomori

- a lot ofwebsites mention it as a fact but it is not.

It is probable, it is a solid theory,

but it was not confirmed.

We don't know anything for sure

and I want to make that as clear as possible

Just as KIKIYAMA, Mado is an extremely mysterious person:

She is a girl

- whether she was born female or she's transgender:

we are going to discuss that too.

We don't even know her age,

she might be child or a grown up woman,

most people assume she's a teenager but really... we'll never know.

"Madotsuki" literally means "windowed"

and it is not used in Japan as a name

so it's probably just a nickname

or a symbol: as Yume Nikki wikipedia says,

"it could be thought of as being a

metaphor: more a description of a

character as the player's window into

the dream world rather than a literal name."

Mado never talks in the game and

of course we don't know what's the reason.

maybe she socially withdrawn

and can't communicate with people properly

maybe she's mute, maybe she can't talk to

the creatures she encounters because they

are not human - possibilities are endless.

There is no official artwork of Mado

so we don't really know what she looks like.

Of course we can see her sprite... obviously....

we can see her pink blouse and red shoes

but that's all, we have no details.

Also, she never opens her eyes

so we don't even know her eye colour.

An image of a female figure

resembling Mado was discovered

on an ancient poncho.

I have no idea where or when it was made,

but it is possible that KIKIYAMA was inspired

by that particular image.

Okay! I think we're done with explanations for now! (not really)

We can finally enter the magnificent world of Yume Nikki.

Menu is very simple: "load" button

is replaced by "diary" because we save our game

by writing in our dream diary obviously...

The introduction is showing us

basics of the gameplay: we are in our room,

we have to get in bed, dream,

and - if necessary - wake up by pressing 9 key.

Effects can be gathered by interacting

with different characters and each one

will give us new unique abilities.

After we get all of them we have to

drop them in the Door Room

or as we are going to call it in this series -

the Nexus.

We cansave our game at our desk when we wake up.

As you can see the game starts in Madotsuki's room

there is our Famicom there to the left

it wouldn't be there if we were in the dream world.

When try to leave the room Mado shakes her head.

We can't leave yet, we have to go to sleep first.

But before we go let me show you how Nasu works.

Nasu is the only game

Mado can play on her Famicom and it is about...

...catching eggplants (Nasubi reference?)

In Nasu we can control a little creature

that resembles a bird - keep that in mind

because we're going to encounter more bird-like characters.

It is surprisingly called "Nasu" by fans

and it's the only character we can control, apart from Mado.

:<

As you can see we can do nothing about this bookshelf

We can save our game here

by sitting on this chair...

Excuse all my saves, I forgot to delete them...

That was kind of pointless but okay.

We can't do a lot here...

we can see what's going on on the balcony but...

...not much... not much is going on... just sky

just regular... stuff...

our TV has no signal just as I said

nothing interesting on telly tonight, sorry!

nothing more we can do,

let's just go to sleep.

We get teleported to our balcony

every time we enter the dream world...

I don't know if there's a reason for that...

You can see the sky is different,

it looks kind of extraterrestrial

and our Famicom is gone as I said.

Now we can leave!

We are in the Nexus now or the Door Room

as some people call it.

Nexus is a main room of some sort

we can enter all 12 Original Locations from here

and that doesn't mean that there are only 12 locations in Yume Nikki,

there are also Deeper Locations,

they are just a little harder to get into.

Actually this is how Mado's dreamworld looks like

more or less

so...yeah, that's... that's a lot of worlds

Let's get back to the Nexus: from here we can enter 12 worlds.

All of them contain doors and portals

that can be used to reach Deeper Locations.

Here our journey begins

and unfortunately we'll enter one of

these doors in the next episode so it

kind of ends too... :(

I hope you enjoyed this little introduction

and I hope you've learned some basic stuff about Yume Nikki.

Stay safe guys and have a nice day! <3

Vol en zéro-G (feat. Veritasium & Physics Girl) - 39 - e-penser - Duration: 35:27.

Hi everybody ! Today's episode is about microgravity.

So there's this company called Novespace that makes zero-G flights

They had invited and we had been trying to schedule this for some time already

And I thought it was a good opportunity

to ask some international youtubers

to join me on that flight.

So, I asked Derek Muller from Veritasium

as well as Dianna Cowern from Physics Girl

to join me...

...on this...

...parabolic flight.

it's been quite hard to organize, but we made it.

And when they made it to France

we first had a meetup at the ESPCI in Paris (Physics and Chemistry college)

it wad pretty cool

then we all travelled to Bordeaux

for the pre-flight briefing.

(Jean-François Clervoy / Novespace CEO & former astronaut)

This is a rule in aeronautics

you don't get to fly

without a pre-flight briefing.

whenever you get on a plane,

you always have goals.

even the pilot who will say : now we go up 4.000ft

now let's bring our speed to 250 knots

now let's go down 3.000ft — constantly with a goal.

hence the pre-flight briefing,

in which we've learned about

the other activities conducted on the same flight, namely

two people making VR experiments

in zero-G.

let me say that again...

Virtual reality experiments...

in zero-G.

I haven't tested it, but it sound pretty terrifying.

we also had a dancer onboard

who was microgravity-dancing

if I can find out her name and her website, channel or whatever

I put the links in the description because

she does amazing things, she's like the Lindsey Stirling of dancers...

but more on her later, you'll see...

after the briefing, obviously, we all got our medical shot

...so that we wouldn't...

...puke

ok. Feels like doing the...

well, we could do it, actually!

— sure! — ok, let's!

(doctor) ever got a tattoo ?

nope.

well, it's...not the same.

alright.

well, that's just an injection

relax your arm...

...there's the muscle (note : hell yeah)

all done ?

(doctor) no swimming now.

no swimming for...

...6 years!

you should've told me before!

(doctor) what's your name ?

Benamran

(me) Bruce / (doctor) Bruno

no, Bruce...did they write Bruno ?

(doctor) yeah...sorry

Bruno is my cousin...

...so be it.

let's take a minute to talk about what's happening

in a former video I made about our senses

I had explained how we could get seasick

and when you're on a parabolic flight,

there are parts of the flight in which

you're subjected to hypergravity.

actually, the microgravity is not really a problem

it's really the hypergravity

when you feel almost twice as heavy

and when you move your head

your internal ear...

...responsible for the interpreting those movements...

...doesn't get why those movements are twice as intense as usual...

...and this is when you can get sick.

So, we get shot with scopolamine (or hyoscine)

which is...quite some drug, actually...

maybe I'll make another video about scopolamine

because there's a lot to say about it

for example, I let you google the fact

it's known and sometimes referred to as "the thieves drug"

well, well, well...

and which, on high dose, can induce...

...hallucinations, delirium, and so on...

but its first effect is to prevent your brain

from sending a signal to throw up.

researching this topic, i found out that

rats do not throw up.

rats are totally vomit free.

So how do rats do if and when they get poisoned ? well...

...first of all, they developed some fine-tuned taste and smell senses...

...and whenever they discover some unknown food...

...they have their elders and their sicks taste the food first.

that's nice.

So! One of the scopolamine side-effect

— you'll be able to spot that quite easily —

...besides the fact your mouth is totally dry

you almost completely stop secreting saliva and other fluids

you get totally...(vacuum sound)...sucked up

besides that, scopolamine will get you quite euphoric

add the fact then when you float in zero-g you get naturally elated,

and it's no wonder why...

...you'll constantly be hearing people going

"it's awesome / it's great / Weeeeee"

that drug gets you high...and a bit dumb

it doesn't make you agressive or anything...just a bit dumb.

Obviouly, since we were on a flight with Veritasium and Physics Girl,

you can easily understand...

...that the sound recorded on the plane...

...is mainly in english.

That being said, we didn't take a zero gravity flight just for fun

even though I can assure you we did intend to have a lot of fun.

but we tried to do it quite seriously

and decided to make some experiments

and see the behavior of some things

in microgravity.

I'm going to let Derek and Dianna explain on their channel

the experiments they conducted on the plane

with varying degrees of success

Because it's one thing to imagine an experiment when you're on the ground

but when you're up there, you simply lose control of about everything.

so it sometimes gets quite difficult...

but I guess it's just the way it is. (there's a french lame joke here, don't mind it)

Now about the experiments I've made, two of which were quite similar and yet not exactly the same

At first, I wanted to check the behavior of a helium balloon

in microgravity, but also during the whole time of a parabola, that's to say

during the acceleration phase

during the injection phase, which is the microgravity time,

and during the pull-out phase, in which we get hypergravity again

I wanted to see a helium balloon under those conditions

similarly

I was carrying a half-filled bottle of water

we dyed the water blue so we could see it clearly,

but it really is only water

the bottle was about half full,

so it was about half full of air as well

and I wanted to watch this air bubble

in microgravity.

Moreover, I also wanted to...

...witness a couple of things...

...I knew about newtonian physics

that is about body movements

when they occur in complete zero-g

I mean, you do expect

a movement to go uninterrupted

as long as there's no obstacle to its course.

and whenever there's a collision, there's supposed to be a reaction (Newton's third law)

well, you'll see...

Last but not least, another thing I wanted to do...

...if you have ever watched a parabolic flight...

...you may have noticed that...

...when we enter the weightless phase...

...everybody on the plane is lifted up off the ground.

There's no reason for that, actually...

there doesn't seem to be an impulse pushing them all up

well I made an experiment to figure this out...

I just wish I could get rid of those balloons... I don't know what to do with them now...

I'll try and attach them somewhere...

Let's take a moment to explain precisely what happens

during a parabola

to create microgravity conditions

You've all probably already seen this chart

showing that the plane goes up, and we get about 1.8g

and then

"injection" phase, we enter the microgravity conditions

which feels really close to no gravity at all

it's something around .01g I think

then it's "pull-out", the recuperation phase,

in which we have yet again hypergravity.

So how does this work ? The explanation is

really simple

that everybody has already experimented.

If you have an object in your hand and throw it in the air like so

at the time the object loses contact with your hand

when it's in mid-air

it is actually in zero-g.

because it is submitted only to its own weight.

I've already talked about that in my video about general relativity

when Einstein was looking at workers on a roof, he was wondering

whether, should one of them fall off the roof,

he would feel his own weight while falling

the answer is "no". Being only submitted to his own weight, he would be in zero-g.

But you understand the plane won't let us fall down to the ground

the plane should lift us up and then get us back safely

in order to lift us, we need an upward acceleration

in my example, the movement is only vertical

but with a plane moving forward, it describes a parabola

so...upward acceleration

to give us momentum...

after that, we "take off" and float in zero-g...

and then the recovery

and we should get back on the floor safely

so the plane should get along with our movement

and only then "grab us" back on the floor

and make us steady again after our free-fall.

what soccer players call "trapping"

soccer or any sport with a ball

this is trapping 101.

you follow and absorb the movement of the ball until it stops completely

this means at some point you need to block it.

this means you accelerate against the movement.

It's the end of the parabola

the second hypergravity phase

to make us steady again.

funny thing, when you're on the plane, you don't feel at all

the plane is going up or going down.

one may think it's like a rollercoaster

when it suddenly starts going down

it's not!

because on a rollercoaster,

you are tied to the car you're in

and your body is forced to go down

while everything inside your body is floating

this could make you sick.

here, everything floats...

we're not sick and we don't fell like we're going either up or down

About the helium balloon,

there was a video on Smarter Every Day that you can watch here

in which Destin (the host) showed that when he accelerates in a car

with a helium balloon inside his car

the balloon will be pushed to the front of the car

it isn't pulled to the back as we could imagine it would

but it's pushed to the front.

and when the car slows down, the balloon goes to the back.

and we wanted to see what would happen

in zero-g, and whether, during the hypergravity phases,

would the balloons be pushed towards the front of the plane

we're slowing down, balloons go to the back.

it's funny.

it's really counter-intuitive

the balloons actually seem to point to our trajectory

we're turning to the right and...voilà...

when we enter hypergravity, what happens is the following

from our own prospective, we're pushed down, the plane accelerates upward

we're pushed down to the floor, not to the front or to the back

the string attached to the balloon stretches out

the balloon is pushed upward.

but as soon as we enter microgravity

the parabola isn't perfect; in the beginning

there's always a short time during which

the plane accelerates to the front

that's why you can watch us float to the back of the cabin

and during this time, the balloons go to the front.

but when we really get in microgravity, the balloons then behave

like any air-inflated balloon, bouncing as they can along their movement

and they won't change trajectory until the string is stretched again.

conclusion : this experiment is a success.

we took advantage of the first parabola

to do this experiment because, as we were told,

we shouldn't do anything special the first time in zero-g

and just let go

And you're about to find out some of us let go better than others.

I don't want to snitch about it

but one of us...

— who hosts a youtube channel called Veritasium —

who, during the whole flight...

looks like he has a hard time controling his movements.

I won't brag about it because I kind of feel the same

but clearly Dianna was more comfortable (and sooner than us)

even though she hit the walls a lot

it's a good thing there's foam on every wall

because you hit them a lot

when you float in zero-g

and it should be said that

even though we know

— the tree of us,

four if you include Derek's camera operator —

the four of us know exactly what microgravity is and how it works

and how we can't control a damn thing

yet, we couldn't help having this quite moronic reflex

to try and swim our way in the cabin.

it really doesn't help.

I could make bloopers ouf of it...really...

then I used the second parabola to send a message

to Michael Stevens of the VSauce channel

because we hoped he could make it with us

unfortunately for us — but good for him —

he was on tour with Adam Savage (formerly a MythBuster)

the show (called "Brain Candy") looks incredible

I really hope they'll tour in Europe, because it looks really good

anyway, i've sent him this little message...

a bit cheesy, that's true

scopolamine will do that to you.

we were all being totally inane in da plane (no pun intended)

You can as well see Jean-François Clervoy

CEO of Novespace and a former astronaut

who participated in repairing the Hubble telescope

that guy is for real!

and he can't help showing off on each parabola

doing squats during hypergravity phase

sitting upside down on the ceiling (he really is the BEST GUY EVER)

yet he can afford it, he really has earned it.

then : the bottle of water

we're currently flying normally, it kind of feels like being simply on the ground

if I shake this bottle of blue-dyed water, bubbles will appear

and will quickly go up

the way we're totally used to...

...everyday.

it's going to be a bit different in zero-g.

of course, in microgravity, air bubbles have no reason

to go rather up than down...

if I shake the bottle

bubbles have no reason to go in any direction

whether up or down

let me shake this a bit more, so that it shows more

you can see the bubbles remain in the middle

with everything floating, it's quite surreal.

besides, just as for the helium balloons, when the bottle is spinning,

the water (which is denser and has a greater inertia) is pushed to the ends of the bottle more than the air within

so the air remains in the center.

and this looks on my face, I call it my scopolamine face.

you can see that the staff people of Novespace

with us in the cabin

are always running after us to make sure

our feet are oriented to the floor before the end of the parabolas.

because when gravity gets back, we go from 0g to 1.8g really fast.

even though it's a foam floor, they don't want us to fall down, which we would all the time.

at least we would the first 5 or 6 parabolas.

because we don't control anything while upside down screaming "weeeeeee"

so they're always around saying "feet down, feet down" (in english)

it means "les pieds en bas" (in french)

then there was this question I had

everytime I've watched people in zero-g, whenever they enter 0g

they all take off the floor

is the plane falling a little bit faster?

in weightlessness, there's no reason to take off

if you have no movement, you keep "not moving"

and go along the plane's movement.

to explain this, we made this simple experiment with foam balls, really light foam balls.

when we entered hypergravity, we've put those balls next to us on the floor

and you can see that when we're lifted up

the balls actually only roll on the floor.

So we concluded the following :

we are actually pushed upward

by the floor which is lined with foam

when it doesn't support our weights

from the hypergravity phase

it stretches out

and pushes us. And this slight push is enough to lift us up.

whereas, for the foam balls

they were too light to press on the floor

and so they roll until they hit something

and then only take off.

anyway, it was funny to figure out that

the simple streching out of foam under our bottoms

is suffiscient to lift us up.

as you have seen so far, we constantly try and hold to something while floating in zero-g

there are straps all over the place so that we can hold onto those.

but the dancer onboard decided to dance in front of a green screen

and the green screen made those straps totally inaccessible.

so she couldn't hold on to anything...and so she did

whatever she could.

I'm not showing you more of her as I imagine

she's making her own video

but just a few seconds to that you can imagine how hard it must be.

And as it was my fifth parabola,

I suddenly trusted I was now good enough to float the way I wanted.

I was not.

Then we had this parabola during which i've had a T.A.R.D.I.S. float, because...

...because I was given an opportunity to have a T.A.R.D.I.S. flying around.

That being said

it was not uninteresting, because it showed

things we know about newtonian mechanics,

that is if you initiate a movement and then let go with no other force,

there's no reason why the movement should stop

and it goes on, up until I interrupt it.

Dianna made a more interesting experiment with a gyroscope, you can see it on her video

but I made a T.A.R.D.I.S fly

word.

the "human ring" is a thing they do on every flight

when you're there, it's totally insane.

imagine there are people above you, under you, next to you...

and it doesn't feel at all like being up or down or whatever...

you just seem to spin around as if it was normal.

and I think it looks great as well.

even though it's a bit ridiculous...I mean look at our faces...

but we didn't care. Again, thanks to scopolamine, we were nothing but happy to do it.

So, the human ring. Scientifically, it's totally pointless

but for fun ? It's really nice.

almost as nice — around the same level of "nicehoodness" — as what comes next.

what comes next — and please, see no sexism in what's coming, there isn't any —

we played volleyball...

...with Dianna being the ball...

I call it the Diannaball

This foolish thing showed us another thing about newtonian mechanics

which was totally unexpected. Watch closely as Derek send back Dianna

boy, this is a weird thing to say out loud.

when Derek sends Dianna back to me

his foot slides out of the strap it was in

leaving Derek with nothing to hold on to.

There you can see a real life demonstration of Newton's third law

as he pushes Dianna, he's pushed back the opposite way with the same intensity.

(take into account the point of view of the camera and the weight differences)

So even this "Diannaball" thing

turned out to be a valid scientific experiment.

Of course, we did all the silly things anyone would do, like sitting on the ceiling

I won't show you everything, there are a lot of videos like this out there...

But the parabola when they throw waterballs at you I'm gonna show

when you try to drink it

I'm actually really proud because I managed to drink one of those

You can hear me proudly yell "I got some"

But more than that

two things happen during this parabola

First, Derek is desperately trying to get some water

and since it was shot high speed (aka "in slow motion")

when he fails, it looks like he's hours late to the battle.

It's a bit ridiculous so...

...of course you can watch it

it's quite satisfying, obviously in a mean way :)

first attempt to kick me in the nuts : FAIL

second attempt, the so-called "guileful kick back" : SUCCESS

and two hours later...

If you pay close attention, you can hear a small sound, like a thud

meaning that Dianna hit her head

and she hit her head big time

I let you see how she hit her head (she was fine, by the way)

This looked totally crazy, I let you see on her video if she talks about it

but you should also go and watch Derek's video

he made a burning flame in zero-g

and he tried some things with his famous slinky.

The next parabola, the 13th, is a martian gravity and no longer zero-g

the plane behaves in such a way we all feel as if our weight is divided by three.

I have nothing to show about this parabola, as I was in the cockpit.

I just wanted to watch the pilots, because there are three pilots

working simulaneously to maintain

the microgravity or any given pseudogravity

one of them takes care of the pitch

while another one takes care of the roll and the yaw

and the third one takes only care of the thrust

their common goal being, in zero-g, that the plane should have lift and drag as close to null as possible.

you can get close to that goal handling the orientation of the plane

and the thrust — to counterbalance the drag.

This is an insanely meticulous knowledge, all three pilots work together

and they do it great.

with a second yoke attached to the plane's, this pilot can only affect the pitch, making the plane go up or down

His only role during a parabola is to give the plane a perfect parabola trajectory.

If he tries to go right or left, it doesn't affect the plane.

This pilot, during a parabola, is here to cancel any drag of the plane with thrust, but should never create any acceleration we could feel in the cabin.

Finally, this pilot makes sure the plane constantly gives the optimal angle in its trajectory, managing only the roll and the yaw

using straps tied to the yoke; he cannot affect the pitch of the plane, as we can see in the next angle.

(strap)

watch closely the altimeter (on the right) and the pitch of the plane (on the left) — hypergravity phase

zero-g phase

hypergravity phase

that let me put the martian gravity parabola aside

since I didn't do anything during this one.

then, there were two lunar-gravity parabolas

I had a lot of fun.

I don't know why but I wanted to do something quite epic on those ones

like an Iron Man or a Spider-man jump, something like this.

something full of testosterone, one might say

something I'd be proud of, that would hit the viewer in the face...

if you listen carefully, while I brace myself, you can hear someone from the staff (Sebastien Rouquette, from CNES)

say : "be careful, do not jump up! jump in front of you"

which naturally led to this

but after that, as promised, the most epic jump in my whole life

I show you all the angles, because I'm really proud

first time I do something like that

I even ended up doing a front flip

only time in my life I made a front flip. Or as I say it

only time in my life I made a front flip!

that's the drugs talking

Second lunar parabola

quite the same, although I made a ridiculous jump (but I didn't jump up this time)

but there's one thing I wanted to do for a while and which was almost impossible in zero-g

but very easy under lunar gravity

I wanted to be in mid-air as gravity reappeared

what you can see by the end of this parabola

it clearly misses a sound effect so that you really feel it

Then they made a little surprise...only 15 parabolas were officially scheduled

and they surprised us with a sixteenth one, in zero-g

and we needed to make that one count.

and we did whatever we felt like.

Bye!

PEOPLE TO BE REAL.

A LOT OF PHOTOGRAPHS WE SEE

TODAY ARE VERY FLUFFY.

AND THEY'RE KIND OF MADE UP AND

PEOPLE YOU KNOW, THE DAYS OF

TAKING SELFIES, EVERYBODY WANTS

TO LOOK BEAUTIFUL.

AND FOR ME I THINK IT'S MORE

IMPORTANT TO JUST REVEAL THE

TRUTH.

SO A LOT OF PEOPLE ASK ME WHAT

I'M LOOKING FOR WHEN I TAKE

PHOTOGRAPHS.

AND WHAT IT REALLY COMES DOWN TO

IS JUST TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS OF

THE TRUTH.

HOW PEOPLE REALLY ARE AND WHAT

THEY REALLY DO.

WHAT THEY'RE REALLY LIKE.

AND IT'S A WAY FOR ME TO SPEAK.

BECAUSE FOR A LONG TIME, I LIVED

IN A BIT OF ISOLATION.

YOU KNOW I COME FROM AN ITALIAN

FOR A LONG TIME I STRUGGLED WITH

TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS, HOW I TAKE

PHOTOGRAPHS IS VERY DIFFICULT.

TO APPROACH PEOPLE

PEOPLE WITHIN A FOOT, TWO FEET

CHALLENGES FOR ME, IT HELPS ME

IN OTHER ASPECTS IN LIFE.

I'M NOT GOING TO ASK, I'M JUST

GOING TO TAKE THE PHOTO AND JUST

Why Isn't Intelligent Design Science? - Duration: 5:25.

Few things seem to work some scientists into a frenzy more than the words "Intelligent Design."

Why isn't Intelligent Design science?

(music)

You may have heard of the theory of Intelligent Design.

It holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by

an intelligent cause, not an undirected

process such as natural selection.

Seems simple enough.

And yet the passion with which many scientists attack the theory known as Intelligent Design-

and attack its proponents as well-is quite a curiosity.

It would be one thing if the attackers simply disagreed with the theory.

But at the heart of most attacks is a single, crucial claim:

"Intelligent Design is not science."

But why not?

What is it about the claim that life may exhibit signs of intelligent design that takes it

outside of the realm of science?

If Intelligent Design research cannot be a scientific endeavor,

then what about SETI-the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence?

The effort counts such scientific luminaries as Carl Sagan and Frank Drake among its founders

and promoters.

SETI uses radio telescopes to scan the skies listening to the random noise of the universe

in the hopes that something non-random can be noted,

indicating a possible intelligence behind its origin.

If the search for indications of intelligence isn't science, why is SETI scientific?

Consider archaeology.

If Bill and Ted are two working archeologists and Bill says,

"Hey, Ted!

Look at this ancient stone tool I just discovered!"

Should Ted respond, "Bill, you know we can't scientifically recognize

intelligent causation.

How do you know that isn't just a rock?"

Should Bill and Ted discover Stonehenge, would concluding that its massive stones were

intelligently arranged there take them out of the realm of science?

Must they only investigate how the massive stones could have naturally grown into such

an amazing configuration?

Or how they mysteriously-and altogether unintelligently-dropped from the sky to land so conveniently?

Would suggesting that Stonehenge was actually designed by minds with intelligence cause

Bill and Ted to be stripped of their status as scientists?

In fact, when a forensic scientist examines a dead body and determines that the individual

did not die of natural causes but died as a result of murder,

should we strip him of the title "scientist" because he has made a determination of intelligent

action?

Some have suggested that Intelligent Design isn't empirically testable enough to be science.

But many of the most popular scientific theories of the day-such as the multiverse theory and

string theory in physics- have proven to be far more devoid of empirical

evidence than the theory of Intelligent Design.

Why are they considered scientific and Intelligent Design theory is not?

You may have read recently about popular scientists such as Richard Dawkins, Brian Greene,

and Neil DeGrasse Tyson gushing about the theory that our universe may be a computer

simulation created by a higher intelligence.

Scientific American wrote, "The idea that the universe is a simulation

sounds more like the plot of 'The Matrix,' but it is also a legitimate scientific hypothesis."

But if this is a "legitimate scientific hypothesis," why isn't Intelligent Design?

Others say claim that, by opening up the possibility that the ultimate source of life may be beyond

scientific consideration, Intelligent Design is not scientific.

But what about the theory of Panspermia-the theory that simple life first came to earth

from space.

It's been advocated by scientific mainstays, such as Fred Hoyle and Chandra Wickramasinghe.

Nobel prize winner Francis Crick, co-discoverer of the structure of the DNA molecule, even

theorized that early life was sent to earth by advanced, intelligent, alien civilizations.

Why do scientists like Crick get a pass when Intelligent Design theory gets shown the door?

The reasons given to reject Intelligent Design as science would cause us to reject any number

of scientific ideas, as well.

In fact, comparing Intelligent Design to Evolution, atheist Thomas Nagel wrote, "Either both of

them are science, or neither of them is."

When one truly steps back and looks at the evidence, it is hard to find reasons for rejecting

Intelligent Design as science other than fear, ignorance, or ideological bigotry.

And I don't know about you, but I don't find any of those reasons very scientific.

Limiting Beliefs About Writing and Your Personality Type - Duration: 8:27.

Hey Dan here and today I want to share

with you a psychological concept that

can have a huge impact on your life and

allow you to really unlock a lot more of

your potential now this is one of those

cool psychological concepts that's been

talked about in self-help for decades

and is now being more verified by

mainstream psychology as well and what

I'm talking about here is limiting

beliefs so if you're not familiar with

this concept or even if you are and what

a bit of a refresher I'm going to

introduce the concept and then get into

a personal story that really explains

how powerful this is so a limiting

belief is something that we believe that

limits us well that was complicated

right we have all these different

beliefs and these are handed down to us

right from our parent from ourselves

from books we read from dudes on YouTube

we see and these beliefs can often

become essentially self-fulfilling

prophecies so another way to look at

limiting beliefs is as a self-fulfilling

prophecy if you believe it it's probably

more likely to come true if you believe

you can never get in good physical

fitness that you have bad genetics and

no matter what you do you're going to be

unhealthy well guess what you're

probably not going to go to the gym

you're probably not going to exercise

because you believe there is no point so

the belief will affect your actions and

the actions will affect your result this

is one of the really important concepts

here and sometimes get lost in the

self-help world right where it's looked

at here's a belief and this causes the

result and that's not really the case

what it is is the belief will cause you

to change your actions and your behavior

and that behavior will then change the

results you end up getting so I want to

give you one example from my own life

here very recent in fact just from last

night so I'm in the process of writing a

new book

hint hint coming up and I have been

struggling to be honest it's been a few

years since I published a book and as

much as I know all these different

writing strategies and techniques have

been trying to wrap my head around what

I actually want to write like something

of real substance

long story short yesterday I basically

decided to scrap about 20,000 words or

at least put it aside for now and just

start from scratch like start with the

introduction and write in the book and

kind of one long ago and in this process

today I shattered a lot of my own

limiting beliefs around writing now

whether or not these are sustainable in

that we're going to see over the next

few days but a few of my limiting

beliefs around writing was I only have

about two good hours of writing in me a

day it was that I can only really write

in the morning I can't write from home

now these beliefs were shaped by some

really effective routines I've created

over the years of getting up in the

morning going to a cafe writing for a

few hours and that works really well for

me consistently but it doesn't mean it's

necessarily true or should hold me back

so I created this limiting belief right

about how and where and when I can write

and yet yesterday I find myself around

five o'clock tired you know had spent

the day already had tried to write in

the morning somewhat effectively

somewhat not and I sit down at home in

the evening and I ended up penning five

thousand and twelve words before I

called it a night now granted the last

thousand or so or unusable due to

profanity blasphemy poor grammar all

kinds of other stuff I was really just

pushing to see if I could hit that many

words but the first four thousand or so

pretty good I think and that really you

know brought this back top of mind I

mean limiting beliefs is something I've

studied and used in my life before but

obviously fell to the wayside why I

wanted to film this video today and just

share it with you because there is such

power in the beliefs we hold in terms of

what we will end up doing another reason

this is really important is on this

channel I do talk about personality

types from time to time right and up

knowing your personality type taking

these kind of personality tests they

have a big upside in terms of

self-knowledge but they can also plant a

lot of limiting beliefs right here's who

you are this is how you are you can't do

certain things right and I still don't

know exactly where I stand on that it's

one of those philosophical things that

and playing with is you know is it

better to accept how you are or better

to fight it and in general I'm a

proponent of sort of you know

self-knowledge accepting who you are and

working in your strengths but sometimes

still the personality types and this

kind of self-assessment can plant too

many limiting beliefs about what we can

or can't do based on averages right

psychology

general does this quite poorly

psychology always looks at average is

right the average success rates the

average rates of well medical science

books that like the average rates of

surviving a disease or this or that and

they rarely look at kind of the outliers

and what's really possible on the other

hand the self-help world tends to look

at the outliers and these extreme

possibilities what you can do without

having a good gauge of reality and what

is actually you know maybe more possible

for more people and so I'm kind of

playing between these two worlds I did a

psychology degree I'm all about kind of

verified information studies but I've

also played in the self health world

I've done my coaching training with Tony

Robbins and stuff and so I see that

world as well so getting back to the

point of this video this is an

introduction to this concept of limiting

beliefs in the future I'll probably do a

video series on it actually where we can

go through some serious exercises and

all that and really dive deeper into it

one of the things you might actually

notice about my channel now is I'm

testing things I'm putting out sort of

videos and topics and if there's a lot

of interest if I see a bunch of comments

on this then I'll know hey this is a

topic I should make a video series on

maybe making our videos going deep into

it and how you can make change than that

but this is a feeler video and what I

want you to do from this video is just

start to think about what beliefs you

might have that affect how you behave

limiting and otherwise so are there

certain beliefs that have maybe

benefitted you where you've always

believed like you know what if I try

hard I can do it or learning a language

is easy or travel is fun and how that

has affected your life and similarly are

there some limiting beliefs you might

have from maybe your parent from your

school from your culture where you've

had these beliefs in your mind about

what is possible and that stopped you

from really trying or keeping an open

mind you know one of the things that can

happen with limiting beliefs is that as

people we don't like cognitive

dissonance when there is a difference

between kind of reality and what we

believe or being challenged around our

beliefs and so what can end up happening

here is if we have a belief right say my

belief I can only write two hours a day

and someone presents an alternative not

an alternative fact but an alternative

hypothesis right that you know you can

write for five hours a day it's very

possible lots of people do it then

there's a challenge here where

instinctively you don't want to be wrong

so the instinct might be to dismiss that

well they're doing drugs or they're

different than me or you know they're

writing something else it's easier or

you know they have more sunshine where

they live or whatever it is right we try

to dismiss facts that can alter our

reality because we don't want to be

proven wrong and this is Universal this

is not a judgment on any people this is

just how we are wired right so what

happens with these limiting beliefs is

that not only do they affect our

behavior and how we act but they also

affect how we process new information

which makes it harder and harder to

actually change the limiting beliefs

because any alternative or alternative

information that comes in we're going to

dismiss and come up with some reason to

do it right so make a list think about

some limiting beliefs you might have if

you want to share them in the comments

feel free otherwise just keep it for

yourself but make a list of some beliefs

good and limiting bad that have really

affected your life in your behavior and

just start to pay attention to them

that's all I'm asking right now we're

not going to dive too deep into homework

and stuff but just start to notice these

pay attention in terms of how maybe your

behavior is affected by some

preconceived beliefs that you're holding

onto that's it for this if you've

enjoyed this and you're not yet a

subscriber do subscribe to the channel I

think here I always get this wrong and

I'll catch you in another video thanks

Kolkata Travel Vlog | Visit India Travel Guides - Duration: 8:03.

Well good morning from Kolkata.

We have made it to our final destination in India.

Final stop.

We're kind of all dropping like flies.

Oh my goodness.

My Mom is really sick.

Yes.

You've been really sick for a few days.

Luckily I've been okay.

Sam's okay.

I got sick about five days ago and I've been okay the past few days.

My Dad is kind of got a bit of a cold.

He's so-so.

So we're kind of just all barely hanging in there.

So I went missing halfway through the Varanasi vlog so Sam continued on without me.

I spent our last day in Varanasi just puking my guts out and I'm slowly on the mend but

I'm still not well enough to go sightseeing today.

So Sam is going to show you around Calcutta with his Dad.

Yep.

Which should be a fun adventure.

And he's actually knocking on the door right now.

So I'll let him in.

So time to go sightseeing with Sam and George.

We didn't venture too far on our first day.

Our hotel was located in Colootola just east of the maidan, so we mostly wandered the park

on foot and watched a bit of cricket, before heading down to Victoria Memorial.

So the one thing you'll notice if you're touring around Kolkata just on foot is just how popular

cricket is here in this city.

It is just everywhere you go, anytime there is a park or an open space you'll see a bunch

of men playing cricket.

So next up we're visiting Victoria Memorial Hall and to visit the garden it is like the

cost of a cup of chai on a train in India.

It is only 10 Rupees.

So yeah, it is really to go in.

If you want to go visit the museum it is 200 but we're uh a little tired today so we're

just going to walk around the premises and take some shots.

The Victoria Memorial was built to commemorate Queen Victoria after her passing, and it officially

opened in 1921.

Inside they have a collection of Indian paintings and Western paintings, as well as rare photographs,

old manuscripts and coin collections.

So just a short outing this morning.

Yeah, we just uh got tired by the heat and humidity didn't we?

It is really hot.

The humidity.

It was killer today.

It was a lot worse than what we've been used to so it just drained us.

I think it is like low 30s.

Sorry low to mid 30s so yeah we're just going to head back.

We're going to get some lunch and then maybe this afternoon we'll explore a bit more.

Maybe by rickshaw.

Yep.

I am back.

I feel like I'm rejoining the vlog towards the end.

But I'm finally feeling well enough.

I don't sound amazing but I'm not puking so bonus points.

Anyways today is our last day in Kolkata.

We just said goodbye to Sam's parents this morning.

We're flying out tomorrow.

So we're going to do some sightseeing.

It is almost sunset time so we're thinking of doing a rickshaw tour around part of the

city.

And uh ooh in our room this is the mystery.

We saw a creature scuttling across the floor.

And we haven't been able to figure out if it is a gecko or a mouse.

We have two pieces of evidence.

We saw geckos in Sam's parents room and they were like crawling on the walls but then I

also found mouse droppings underneath my pillow.

So it could be either of the two creatures.

Sam is not impressed in the background.

He's like Rrrr.

I'm hoping it is a gecko because I'm personally afraid of mice.

He's hoping it is a gecko.

If I find.

If I found a mouse I think I'm going to freak out.

Yeah, so I think I'm going to be packing the bags.

Um tonight and just shaking everything out and make sure we're not taking a mouse back

home to Canada because that wouldn't be good.

But anyways let's go sightsee around Kolkata.

With only two of us remaining, we went out for a little walk around our neighbourhood.

We found some street art, took photos of the iconic yellow cabs, watched a game of cricket

on the street, and then befriended a sweet dog along the way.

Pup.

Of course you're sweet.

Every dog is sweet here.

Yes, I'm just looking for food.

Just looking for treats.

Oooh.

Look at you.

You have nice eyes.

(Street noises)

Who thinks Sam should get one of the outfits right behind him.

Yes.

No.

I would vote for the Aladdin pants.

The Gold Aladdin pants.

Burgundy shirt.

Oh yeah.

So visiting the Sir Stuart Hogg Market was a bit of a bust.

We were basically surrounded by a group of people who just wanted to sell us stuff and

take us to their shops.

And I mean you do get hassled quite a bit in India but it is usually just like one or

two people trailing along.

Not like being encircled by men.

So I think we're going to ditch the market and wander on foot.

So forget shopping.

We had enough of that.

Change of plans.

So now we're going to try and get some well maybe the best views in our neighborhood.

We found a rooftop bar that is on the 9th floor.

Yeah, I think it is called Blue and Beyond.

And this is awesome.

It is 5:20 right now and sun sets at five forty so I think we're coming at just the

right time.

Perfect timing.

Perfect timing.

Well this is a fancy hotel.

I bet they don't have any mice here like in our hotel.

We clearly should have stayed at the Lindsay.

Now let's go to the bar.

So it is a bit overcast.

We didn't get a magical sunset.

But we did get food.

It is pretty good.

We have a meze platter with pita, hummus, babaganoush and falafel.

Iced tea and Sam is already digging in.

It was quite overcast in Kolkata that day so we didn't get a great sunset, but it

was still a nice spot to cool off with a drink and see the city from a different vantage

point.

Okay so we're doing a pulled rickshaw tour.

And you're already on.

How do you feel?

Check this out.

Wow.

(Street sounds)

We are doing a tour by pull rickshaw because apparently these are typical of Kolkata.

Yep.

And Sam was very adamant about it.

This was the one thing he wanted to do.

And I feel pretty bad because we're these two plump foreigners.

Yeah, we're a bit of a heavy load but I mean I have a lot of respect for these drivers.

They work hard to earn a living.

Yeah.

And we're definitely paying tourist prices and we're also going to give him a tip.

A really big tip.

So I feel bad but I guess this is what you do in Kolkata.

Alright guys that is a wrap from Kolkata.

We are all packed up and ready to go.

So yeah that is basically the end of our journey in India and what a journey it was.

Oh my gosh like yeah.

It has been a crazy month.

It has been a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows and we'll be talking more in a travel

tips video coming up soon.

Mmmhmmm.

But for now we have 3 flights.

Three back to back flights that we need to catch and we'll tell you where we're going

in our next video if we haven't already.

I can't remember but see you next time.

Tata.

Bye.

Why Don't Sled Dogs Ever Get Tired? - Duration: 2:39.

Plate Deconstruction: Roasted Beets Salad With Dan Kluger - Duration: 3:10.

*Ready to rock?*

Yup!

My name is Dan Kluger,

and we're at Loring Place

in Greenwich Village.

I chose the beet dish that we're going to do today because

when we look at the deconstruction,

I also want to talk about the inspiration.

And I'm always asked about,

"What's the inspiration behind a dish?"

And I thought this one was actually really kind of interesting.

Sitting on my deck

in the summer

having some cheese and crackers,

and my daughter made me

a whole wheat cracker

with some membrillo, quince paste,

and a piece of manchego.

And then she ran to the plant behind me

and put a piece of mint on it.

And, not even thinking about it, I ate it,

and all of a sudden was like,

"Wow, these things really work together."

It was really exciting.

So we're going to make our roasted beet salad

with granola

vivace cheese,

membrillo,

little bit of mint,

and lemon vinaigrette.

For this, we start with beets that we've roasted.

Dress it with a very simple dressing.

So the dressing for the beet salad is

a lemon vinaigrette

with a little bit of vanilla-infused olive oil.

Take olive oil, add in vanilla bean.

There's often vanilla in quince, in membrillo,

Again, a very good pairing.

So rather than put it in there,

we took it out and put it in the vinaigrette.

And we're going to bring it up to a simmer.

Let it sit for a few hours.

Strain it out,

and then we just add in lemon juice and olive oil.

And using a hand blender,

just zap it together.

Here we're using baby beets.

We have red, golden, and candy cane.

And we gently toss these with a little bit of salt.

The beets line the bottom of the bowl.

There should be just enough dressing

that they're well-coated

but not swimming in vinaigrette.

We have some chopped jalapeño.

And so, you get heat with some bites

but not every bite. It's just mixed in.

Some homemade quince paste.

I really like quince.

I love the perfume of it.

And I love that it really signifies late fall.

Going to Spain and having it on everything

made me really always want to make my own.

Homemade membrillo that's peeled

and cooked with water, sugar, and a little bit of lemon

until very tender.

And then we let it set up overnight,

and dice it up.

And then we have this lovely vivace cheese

from Cato Corner.

It's a cow's milk cheese,

and it has a nice sharpness.

It's similar to provolone

with like, a little bit of emmental to it.

I'm thinking of this cheese, crackers, membrillo thing.

So this inspiration, it started with that.

And from there, we top it with a little bit of granola.

And this granola has

pumpkin seeds, flax seeds,

puffed quinoa, puffed cracked wheat,

some candied gingered cashews,

and a little bit of star anise and smoked paprika.

And all these things are toasted and then mixed together

to create this slightly sweet but very savory granola.

And it's really about crunch,

this idea of this cracker,

and then kind of playing on top of that and adding to it.

I love a lot of herbs.

I put herbs in almost anything,

and here we're using mint.

Finish with a little bit of lemon zest.

And that's our roasted beet salad.

Just a delicious vegetable. (laughs)
