Jon Van Dyke papers to be unveiled at UH law library - Duration: 2:18.
>> Narrator: Seven years after renowned University of Hawaiʻi law Professor Jon Van Dyke's
untimely death, his academic and research papers on topics ranging from the law of the
sea to Native Hawaiian rights are available to scholars and law students at the UH Law Library.
On March 4, the law library will unveil a searchable database, "The Jon Van Dyke Archival Collection."
Associate Professor and Law Library Director Vicki Szymczak said the database will add
a tremendous depth of insight into multiple areas of legal concerns documented by the
prolific Van Dyke, who passed away in November 2011.
>> Vicki Szymczak: It was very easy to read his work.
He had a tremendous ability for breaking down complex issues so that other people could
understand, people who were not versed in the law but were just learning about these issues.
>> Narrator: The process to preserve thousands of pages of documents, which were collected
from Van Dyke's office and home, was a monumental feat in itself – given the need to eradicate
any hidden mold or bugs in the papers.
>> Szymczak: The best way to eliminate it is by freezing the documents for a period of
time to ensure that any living organisms are killed, and then the documents don't leave
the building ever again.
Once they are removed from the freezer, they are indexed and tabbed, and placed into acid-free
folders and acid-free boxes.
>> Narrator: The permanent resting place for the actual papers is the law library's intensive
storage room, which has a separate chilling unit to maintain a specific temperature and
humidity level.
Aided by funding by the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities, the collection, documentation
and now electronic availability of Van Dyke's research were a labor of love for library
volunteers and personnel, who knew the importance of preserving his legacy for future generations.
>> Szymczak: A lot of Jon Van Dyke's work continues today, so a lot of the issues – regarding
environmental law, the rights of indigenous peoples and the Pacific Islands – is still
work that is being taken on by new scholars.

well, we were supposed to cross at 2 PM, It is 3 PM and still no advisor aboard
a 2h30 delay is announced... as usual
we are hoping to cross before the night

either we get worked up or we take it cool
i hope that they will let me finish my book before their arrival, we will arrive at night any way

2nd day of the canal
300 000 000 $ ... 300 000 000 $ on a boat!
we are going to the miraflores locks ... in 30 miles!
and we can see the catamaran behind us... and... "french humour"
we are going through the locks by ourselves
the catamaran has some engine troubles...
yes! Here we work!
i think there is not so much sail boats going alone through the canal!
we are about to go in the last lock before the Pacific!

some canal debrief...
overall it went well. Even if we broke some stuff.
The first day was a little bit crazy
You shouldn't be scared to say no to the advisor
cause sometimes they put in dangerous situations for your boat
for exemple we were supposed to be aside a 50 foot catamaran.
way too big fo us
and the lines on our side were staying on the catamaran
because we were too small to hold a big boat like that
and in the last minute, change of plans
the cata advisor said to put one of the lines on our boat.
and the front one was still on the cata
and when the cargo has put the engine on to leave the lock
our fronts went banana and we got the weight of the two boats on our line
our fairlead exploded
and when you complain to the advisor they say the canal has no responsibilities on the fact that our boat is not in good shape
so.. we had a shitty advisor to stay civilized
the second day was better
the cata had still engine trouble so we went through by ourselves
and we almost hit two walls in the locks
because we had strong back wind pushing us in the locks
but we managed to do it with not too much damages so ...NICE!
