In this video I will guide you through a problem in Smith's Organic Chemistry.

I'm Stoddard, founder of studychem, the place for students to turn for higher grades

in ochem.

Let's get started.

These two problems are two very simple practice problems for using toluene sulfonyl chloride

or TsCl in pyridine.

And we're asked to draw the products of each reaction and indicate the stereochemistry

at any stereogenic centers.

Here we have 1-butanol and we're reacting it with TsCl or toluene sulfonyl chloride.

Let's draw this out.

So the products we are going to get here are this very large toluene group attached to

sulfur and a few oxygens, then we have our oxygen of our alcohol and these four carbons

over here.

Alright that is the product there.

There is no stereochemistry to think about in this problem, so that's it.

Now, in this reaction in part b, we do have a stereogenic center.

This is the stereogenic center.

We have a chiral alcohol.

And in this reaction, this bond right here is not being broken.

This bond does not break.

This C-O bond does not break.

And that's important to know.

Look at the mechanism and understand it.

If a bond doesn't break, then the carbon-oxygen bond can't change it's configuration at

all.

We can't change the configuration of the stereogenic center.

So all we form from this reaction is the same molecule where we have the dashed O and then

we can just use Ts to abbreviate this very large toluene sulfonyl group.

We will write OTs where Ts stands for toluene sulfonyl.

That's all they're looking for here.

There's no inversion of stereochemistry when you're reacting with toluene sulfonyl

chloride because the C-O bond does not break.

Please review the mechanism if you're not sure.

Mermaid lashes - this is going to be hectic!

oh my gosh!

Hey guys! So I'm here at "Envious Lashes" here with

a celebrity lash stylist Clementina Richardson

so she's actually going to be helping me

do this mermaid lash that we have here

so can you tell me a little bit about the trend

it's all about color

so what we're going to do

is a combination of purple, blue

of course we need to add some black in there

along with some red

so the extensions are attached directly

to the natural lash

using a medical-grade adhesive, two tweezers

there's no touching of the eyes whatsoever

you definitely will use a combination of

different lengths, different curvatures

in order to contour and create whatever

artistic style you're going for

we're gonna show you all the different colors

they have here

so let's get into it. let's do it

so first step is the consultation process

you have really great natural lashes

so in order to best accentuate your eyes

I'll have to decide

what type of curvature would look best on you

now turn facing forward

so what I'm looking at is

the curvature of the natural lashes

which is super super straight

you can see that they stick straight out

so you want them to lift up

if your lashes grow on one straight line

that means that your lashes are very sparse

color wise I'm thinking at least three colors

okay so let's have a look at the colors.

okay here we have red, we have the gold-tone

we have green, purple, blue, teal and the lilac

that's what it looks like

when it's individual

I'm not going to do the green

because I don't want you to look like Christmas

so I'm thinking red, blue, purple

yeah

and we decided on the cat eye style

so the longest ones would be on the outer corner

yes because of this type of styling we're doing

we're doing a cat eye

so yes the longest is definitely on the outer corners

I'm so curious what the red looks like

everyone has the same reaction

when they look in the mirror

oh oh it's gonna be bright

I'm like, no

the left hand is holding an isolation tweezer

and then once it's isolated

I pick up a strand on with my right hand

and attach it to the existing natural lash

so what this does it cures the bond and

it's also good for the stinging

feels good

at this point, I actually hadn't seen what I look like

but it kind of felt like a peacock was on my eye

let's move on to the other half of the eyes

and we'll do the big reveal at the end

everyone's lifestyle is different

so I have to see what they like

so showing pictures

the way a client actually wears their makeup too

also helps me out because

if you wear a dramatic smoky eye that tells me

you want like a lots of volume

and you like a dramatic look

and what necessary looks good on your friend

may not look good on you

everyone has two different eye shapes

different skin tone, different natural lashes

different textures

so take a look and tell me

what you think about them

oh my gosh

oh my gosh they're so natural

when you see both of them together

it just completes the look

we give her a nice like almond shape

we transferred slowly into purple, red combination

of course black is throughout the entire lash line

we went back again with purples

a little bit of blue, red, and black

and the longer ones were towards the outer ends

so now her eyes look like round and almond

they are rounder

even though we did the cat eye

yes, this is definitely wearable

coming in, I was like mermaid lashes

this is going to be hectic!

this is going to be crazy!

we always get the same reaction

people always think it's gonna be more dramatic

than it actually is

oh I can definitely do this

alright guys so as you can see

it was not intimidating at all

it's mermaid lashes

but it's still so wearable

and there's like pops of color

that I just didn't think would show up the way it did

was this what you envisioned at the beginning

when we were like, let's do it

you know what, it came out fuller than I thought

because her natural lashes are really dense

and she has like many different layers

I would say throughout her lash line

she has anywhere from like two to four

different layers of lashes

yeah who knew there were layers of lashes

layer of lashes are good

because the more layers you have

the fuller look you can achieve

and this one here actually guessed almost to the tee

how many lashes was on my right side

just by looking at it, you guessed 115

and there was 113

Wow! I've been doing it so long

I think I can just eyeball it

I can just see from the density

it looks about...

I was on point

so how would you say is a good way to maintain

or like to make them stay this way

obviously no rubbing the eyes whatsoever

try to avoid touching them with your fingers like this

because the fingertips

you tend to have oil on your fingers and

oil is not good for the extensions

what it does is it's going to break down the bond

and make your lashes shed prematurely

no picking of the lashes whatsoever

so as far as makeup removers, it must be oil-free

so this just sped up my morning process

so much quicker

I don't have to do mascara and all that

and you definitely don't want to

apply mascara over the lash extensions

you're gonna be creating excessive weight on them

The sitcom Martin ended its run more than Martin Lawrence says never say never to sitcom revival - Duration: 3:59.

The sitcom Martin ended its run more than two decades ago.

But its stars Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell-Martin and Tichina Arnold were seen laughing together on Thursday outside a Burbank Morton's Steakhouse.

Emerging from the restaurant, the trio chatted with TMZ, and when the possibility of reviving the show came up, Martin, 52, said: 'Never say never.'

He clarified that 'we don't know nothing right now, but never say never.'

When they were pressed further, 48-year-old Tichina offered the vague: 'Well, within life, there's always new beginnings, and there's always change, and there's always new plateaus where we have to reach, so we'll see what's happening.'

Tisha, 49, vamped to the camera: 'We can't tell y'all s***.'

Laughing, Tichina said: 'See, I was gonna put it a little more eloquently.'

Before the original series came to an end in 1997, it had been beset with scandal, with Tisha suing her leading man.

Tisha accused Martin of sexual harassment and abuse and left the show, returning with the proviso that she and he would not have scenes together.

Yet Martin - who denied the allegations at the time - and Tisha seem to have patched their friendship up, and appeared in cheerful spirits with Tichina this Thursday.

During their interview with TMZ, the three of them mulled aloud what a potential revival of Martin - which originally ran from 1992 to 1997 - could look like.

'Well, I don't think we have to do it the same way,' said Martin

'I just think we have to be funny and we have to be entertaining and give people heartfelt stories.'

'And the truth,' added Tisha.

Asked what the truth is, Tisha specified: 'I think, evolution

Evolution, you know? It's still gonna be fun,' she said, turning to Martin with a smile.

'Yeah,' said Martin, grinning back.

'But it's gonna be an evolution,' said Tisha, to which Martin concurred: 'That's right.'

When the interviewer prodded them about whether a revived version of the sitcom would have a political angle, Tisha got a laugh by demanding: 'Why are you asking all this - didn't we just tell you, what - that we don't know?'

'We would definitely wanna be current,' said Tichina

'You know, we're not trying to relive anything

We wanna give credence to the past, and to show how the past has evolved, and made us who we are.'

She pointed out: 'We're blessed, because the '90s were a great time, and we would love to recreate it, just bring it back alive and give credence to it, and kinda tap into a place where people - '

'We ain't telling y'all s***!' Tisha lightheartedly snapped at the camera.
