Will Ferrell was actually a little scared of the Jack in the Box
because the director controlled the switch and pushed it at different times for every take.
A fun easter egg...or…
Christmas egg?...
is that Ming Ming the elf is played by someone
who stars in a very popular Christmas movie.
Do you have any guesses?

and stick around to see the answer.
The director Jon Favreau voiced almost all of the stop motion character voices,
including the voice of Mr. Narwhal.
"Bye Buddy! I hope you find your dad!"
He also made the sounds for the raccoon.
[Hissing]
This gag was a combination of a trained raccoon,
a raccoon statue for close ups,
[hissing]
and a dummy raccoon.
Will Ferrell and Jon Favreau ran amok with a camera in New York
to film Buddy's stroll through the city streets,
and the guy in red that Buddy thinks is Santa was actually a real pedestrian,
which for me makes his stunned reaction even funnier.
For the gum chewing gag, there's actually a thin layer of plastic on the railing where
the gum was placed
and Will Ferrell had chewed them all beforehand.
It's still pretty gross though.
They did film in the lobby of the Empire State Building, but the elevator is fake
because there isn't one in the building that has this many buttons.
So did you know who played Ming Ming?
It was Peter Billingsley who is famous for playing Ralphie in the holiday classic
A Christmas Story.
Another fun cameo is that the security guard on the right is Will Ferrell's brother.
It took 12 people two weeks to make all of Buddy's decorations,
and one week alone was spent making the LEGO skyline.
As a result the mall Santa fight was done in one take
because it would've taken way too long to set everything back up again.
The real Gimbels store closed down in 1987,
so the location they used for Santa Land
as well as the apartment scenes,
the mailroom,
the jail,
and the doctor's office
were all built inside the Riverview hospital complex in Vancouver.
"He's certifiably insane!"
Not only that but the horror movie Jason vs. Freddy was filmed there right before Elf.
Will Ferrell didn't actually eat real cotton balls.
Instead he ate wads of undyed cotton candy.
Ferrell constantly tried to make James Caan break character while filming
and one of his "breaks" actually made it into the film.
If you look closely you can see him laugh while Buddy gets his finger pricked.
[Loud screaming]
Will Ferrell also didn't drink the two liter bottle of soda.
It was drained through a hose that ran behind his arm, which was removed in post-production.
Ferrell didn't do the burp either.
[Loud, long burping noise]
Instead it was recorded by Maurice Lamarch who was the voice of Brain
from Pinky and the Brain.
But Will Ferrell did have to pretend he was burping to make it look real on camera.
[Loud and long yelling]
What Will Ferrell did eat though was all the junk food and syrup on his spaghetti
–and he had to do it not once, but at least 4 or 5 times.
"It's your brother, Bud...!"
[fearful shout]
Will Ferrell's reaction to the cab wasn't acting
because he was really scared the cab was going to hit him.
Yup, that's a genuine look of terror right there.
When Buddy tries to put the star on the tree
it took a whole team of visual effects people to rig it
so the gag would look funny and also keep the stunt double safe–
and they did it in one take.
[light flickering noises with a loud crash]
