Episode 39: Vibrato technique and control - Duration: 14:24.This is Hester and this is María. Together we are... The CONSORT COUNSELLORS!
In this episode we are talking about a fascinating technique: vibrato.
Vibrato is a fluctuation of the sound in pitch and in volume
and it's also one of the most powerful expression tools that we have when playing the recorder,
so we must use it wisely! We like to see vibrato as a kind of ornamentation.
Depending on the style you play in there may be a certain set of rules to use it,
but in our opinion there is no music where you *cannot* add any vibrato.
Vibrato exists in infinite ways and, anyway, we are not machines, like organs,
in which the air is travelling all the time the exact same way to produce the sound.
Today we want to give you some tips to have control over your vibrato.
We are going to do this with the help of our friend Walter van Hauwe and his book "The modern recorder player".
We give our own twist to some of the suggestions in his book. If you want to know more, check it out!
Today we are working on the basics of breath vibrato.
At the same time we also focus on how to get rid of an unconscious, continuous fast vibrato.
Next week we will bring you another episode on vibrato. Then we will focus on its musical functions
but also on a second type of vibrato, next to the breath one, namely finger vibrato.
It is good to realise where in our body we make the vibrato.
Ideally this is not done with our respiratory muscles down here, but in the larynx, the upper part of the neck.
This may feel a bit contradictory, but if you think about it,
it would be a little bit silly if every time we want to produce a beautiful vibrato
you would see our belly shaking "like a bowl full of jelly".
What you just saw and heard was not a very controlled, and also not a very beautiful vibrato...
To develop a very controlled vibrato and do anything we want with it
we do need to start with our respiratory muscles.
They hold the air and give us the basis we need to create a beautiful sound.
if you need some tips to work on that, check Episode 17, where we have quite a few exercises on breath support.
Let's go through some exercises to get the perfect vibrato!
Let's take our altos in 440! We are going to play the following pattern
Starting on the high D, we are going to play very loud and rich
and then we are going to drop the air pressure gradually
until the note drops into the lower register, like this.
When we play the complete pattern we will hear
four different low pitches once the sound drops.
Don't worry about the tuning of those, focus on the action itself.
Move the respiratory muscles as little as possible.
Try to keep them tight, especially when the note drops into the lower register.
When our air pressure is low, we need to keep our muscles tight to control it.
Please do this exercise if you have an unwanted, continuous, fast vibrato.
You will get rid of it with this one!
We have a bonus exercise for you!
You can add one more note to the exercise, namely, the middle G.
When you drop that one, instead of a lower note you will get a flageolet tone.
If you can keep that one stable and beautiful, you have
very good control over your breathing muscles!
To discover the feeling for making a proper vibrato, laugh not too loud, like an evil witch, like this...
Focus on feeling how the side of the tongue is touching the back teeth.
You can also sing a little cannon or a song you know with this mean little sound.
The next step is: play a high C and sing the rhythm of the song you just practiced with your evil laughter into the instrument.
Now try to do this without singing and you will notice you have yourself a good vibrato!
To have even better control, we go back to exercise 1, but now we are going to add a rhythm to it.
We set the metronome to 50 beats per minute
and we play up and down within one beat
in a regular way, like this:
Let's try this faster and faster and you will notice that it becomes harder and harder to get to the lower register.
This is a good thing, because like that we get our perfect vibrato!
Again, this exercise is very helpful for people who may want to get rid
of their unconscious, fast and continuous vibrato.
Once you found your very nice vibrato with this exercise, there is one more aspect you can pay attention to:
stay nicely above the pitch but also nicely under the pitch.
In this way, we will perceive that the right pitch, in the middle, is still your real pitch.
Next exercise! Pick any note of a B-flat major chord. So, B-flat, D or F in any octave.
We set the metronome again to 50 beats per minute.
We will play a long note and have some vibrato waves in it as follows:
1st beat: plain - 2nd beat: 2 waves of vibrato,
then plain again - 3 waves of vibrato...
Every time we add one more until we get
to six waves of vibrato in one beat.
Then one more beat plain and then we stop!
We show you exactly how it works:
In the next round, choose a different pitch within the chord.
It is really important to feel how you should adjust your air pressure in different registers.
Also, change instrument and you will see how different it feels!
Based on these principles, you can create tons of different exercises
in different tonalities, different registers, passing on different rhythms through the ensemble...
Use your imagination and you'll have lots of fun!
A general rule for us in music...When half-tone steps appear in your melody, it is vibrato alert time!
Because with these chromatic steps the music conveys emotions or affects
where it is proper to have a 'personal' colouring on your notes.
To conclude today's exercises,
we have a descending chromatic motif.
We are going to color every second note in this motif
with four waves of vibrato, regular, within the time of the metronome.
However, we do have freedom to choose the amplitude
of each of those vibrato waves.
It can be that you stay very close to the central pitch,
with a narrow amplitude,
or you may go farther away both up and down,
and then you have a completely different expression.
The second player plays the following counterpoint,
without any vibrato except for the final A,
because this is where you end in unison with player one
and the goal is to understand the amplitude
that player 1 chooses for this last A,
so that the note melts together as if you are one player.
You can repeat this exercise two-by-two, going through the ensemble in a chain.
We had now Player 1 and Player 2, then I can be player 1 and the person next to me Player 2
and so you can go through the circle until it's closed.
Change the tonality, change the tone with which you start the exercise
and try it on different instruments so that you have more and more control over all your vibratos.
Or... repeat this exercise, but instead of varying the amplitude,
vary the amount of waves. Add more or less waves to the note but keeping the same amplitude.
Or... Total freedom! Vary the amplitude and vary the speed as you like. Be an artist!
With this exercise we are getting into music-making, because this is a beautiful chromatic line...
Next week, if you stay with us, we will tell you more
about the musical use of the vibrato techniques we just learnt.
To sum up, a basic vibrato has two factors you can vary: the amplitude and the speed.
With these two factors you can create the most beautiful and personal colouring of your notes.
I'm sure you know lots of recorder players who have a very characteristic vibrato when they play.
If you know some of those – recorder players, singers or players of other instruments
who you immediately recognise, and their vibrato, their colouring touches your soul...
Let us know who they are! We want to listen to them.
See you next week, bye-bye!

Ký ức tuổi học trò : Nơi ấy bình yên - Trà My Vũ - Mùa hoa bách hợp - Duration: 4:42.When I was a student, I had two very good boyfriends.
The first one was a young man, named Cuong,
and his father was a famous official.
In front of the crowd, he smiled a lot. He wanted to show off that he was Cuong and he had a strong house.
The second one was Nam, who was gentle, quiet and whose parents were farmers.
Over time, the friendship between us became more and more intimate, making our classmates envy us.
One time, our school organized a contest with the theme "peaceful".
My friends got the top scores,
so the judge needed to come up with additional questions to choose the best contestant.
In a large and crowded hall, the judge asked Cuong:
Why did you choose the context of sitting alone in the lake fishing in the painting?"
Yeah, I was born in a big city so it was noisy, so only when I went to suburbs to go fishing alone at the lake did I see the peace.
The judge nodded approvingly. The whole hall applauded.
Then he turned to ask Nam:
- Same question with you, please explain to me.
Yes, I chose the context of the picture which was a river on a day of big wave and wind,
, I and my girlfriend hold hands to overcome the waves.
- Yes, because for me, peace is not to live in a peaceful place
, it is that I and my girlfriend can hold hands to overcome all the challenges.
The hall applauded, and Nam blushed.
I approached Nam, held his hands and felt so touched:
- Thank you, I really want to be beside you and hold your hands to overcome the hardest challenges
because being with you, I feel so peaceful.
Nam put his hands on my hands, and held them tight, speechless.
He was in tears but his face was filled with happiness.
I turned to Cuong who was also red with tears because of a reason opposite Nam's.

Joseph the Dreamer: A Dysfunctional Family? - Duration: 4:32.Hey friends!
Are you familiar with the account of Joseph
in the Bible?
I want you to picture a 17 year old
who is the 11th
of 12 boys in the family.
And if you're thinking, "Wow,
"12 boys.
"That's a lot of work for one woman."
(Laughs)
There's some family dynamics that you need to be aware of
as we get into the story of Joseph.
So, Joseph's dad is named Jacob.
And Jacob had, actually, 13 children.
One daughter named Dina.
But all 13 children by four different women.
He had one favorite woman whose name was Rachel.
But Rachel couldn't have any kids.
Not for a very, very long time, but he wanted to have kids
and so he ended up having kids by
three other women before finally,
God opened Rachel's womb and she gave birth to a young boy named Joseph.
And, Joseph, because Joseph came from Rachel,
Joseph became dad's favorite.
Rachel ended up having another son after Joseph and his name was Benjamin.
And as we go through the story of Joseph over these next couple of weeks,
you'll need to keep that in mind.
That Rachel had two boys: Joseph and Benjamin.
But Joseph and Benjamin were dad's favorites.
And that really irked the brothers.
If you've ever had a relationship in the family
where there's an obvious favorite to mom and dad,
you know that doesn't always go very well
when dad likes one over the other.
And the boys, the boys didn't like it.
So, there was some jealousy going on in the family already,
but then
Joseph had dreams.
He was a dreamer.
So, God gave him some eally incredible dreams
that he was not shy about sharing with his brothers.
And two dreams in particular.
He came to his brothers one day
as they were all working in the field.
And they were working with some grain
and he said to his brothers,
"Guys, I had a dream
"that we were all working in the field with some grain
"and my sheaf of grain
"stood in the middle while all of yours bowed down to me."
And that didn't sit well with them at all.
And then he said, "Oh, and I had another dream.
"I had a dream that there were stars
"and there was the sun and the moon and every
"one of those things was bowing down to me.
"And guess how many stars there were in the dream?
Eleven.
And he had eleven brothers.
And they didn't like that.
And so there was some more jealousy.
And then there was something that dad did
that didn't help at all.
He gave Joseph
a richly ornamented coat.
You may have seen, there's a Broadway play about Joseph.
And, in the Broadway play, he has this
multi-colored, multi-faceted coat that just is lavish and
we aren't told if he wore it all over the place or
if he flaunted it in front of his brothers.
But, knowing a 17-year-old boy
who knew his brothers were jealous of him,
and who knew he had dad's love and affection,
I'm guessing he maybe did.
But his brothers didn't like it.
But dad treated him as a very special boy.
It's a fascinating story
that we're going to go through over the next couple of weeks.
You might be asking, what in the world does this have to do with you?
Well, a couple of things.
First of all, if you're in a family where there's some rough family dynamics,
it's not the first time in the history of the world where God's seen that.
If you're in a family where there's some rough relationships
between siblings, or between parents,
yours isn't the first time that God's seen anything like that.
We're going to see over the next couple of weeks
that God knows how to deal with those kinds of things.
And he gives us some good guidance on
how to stand tall
when our relationships get really broken
and kind of knock our feet out from underneath us.
And secondly, another thing.
What does this have to do with you?
Remember how Jacob, the dad,
treated Joseph?
How he treated him so special, unique.
He showered him with his affection and his love.
He gave him the unique, richly ornamented coat.
Well, that's a picture of how God treats you.
That's a picture of how God loves you.
That's something else that's also going to come through
as we go through the life of
Joseph over these next couple of weeks.
We'll, uh, we'll get to see a picture of how God feels
about you.
About how he sees you as someone who's so unique
and so special.
And somebody that He cares about and can't stop thinking about.

ISLAM ITU DAMAI - CREATORS FOR CHANGE - Duration: 4:22.Good evening, viewers.
Not long ago a bomb detonated in the city of Surabaya.
The bombing was carried out by a family.
A man took his wife and children with him in a suicide bombing/What are you watching?
The news. The recent news is just...
What is it about?
About terrorists, and
suicide bombings. A man did one with his entire family,
all in the name of religion.
Religion?
As far as I know, religion doesn't teach violence.
All religions teach love and peace, not violence and war.
The problem is how they think.
They did these things because they think they are jihad.
Why do some people think the only way to do jihad is through war?
There are many more ways to do jihad.
Did you know the real meaning of jihad is "giving your best effort",
and we can do this by being kind,
not by going to war,
or worse: suicide bombing, terrorism, and destruction.
Even learning and working are considered jihad.
But... those people believe they will get to heaven by doing those things.
That's why he brought his wife and kids to the suicide bombing.
Heaven? Even Allah hates people who kill themselves in bombing.
Even crazier, he brought his family with him.
Allah said in surah An-Nisa: 29
"And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful"
Instead of taking your family to commit acts of terrorism,
wouldn't it be better to work to bring them closer to Allah?
By praying together, worshipping God, and doing good deeds.
These are also jihad.
Why would they kill themselves in this suicide bombing?
Because they thought God ordered it.
Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahiim.
They thought they killed in the name of religion, but remember: Allah created humans and gave us life.
I hope there will be no more incidents like this.
It is our duty to remind our brothers and sisters about these things
so that they don't fall into terrorist acts.
It reminds me of the words by Habib Ali Zainal Abidin Abdurrahman Al Jufri.
He said, "We often hear about dying in Allah's way,
but what about life in Allah's way?"
Life in Allah's way is a more difficult jihad and a harder test.
Especially in this age of slander.
Whoever lives in Allah's way will eventually die in Allah's way too.
Adzan,
It's time to pray, let's go pray.
Come on!
Jihad... it doesn't mean courage to die, but the courage to live.
Diligent in playing our own roles, sincere yet modest as creations of God.
