Last week I ch-ch-challenged you to create a pattern artwork for an all over tshirt print!
And Guess what?
You guys handed in some awesome patterns.
Let's take a look at some of them now!
SharkaSplat created this cute black and white canine pattern which looks great on RedBubble
phone cases!
KasiaDesigns created this intricate fractal horn repeating pattern design.
The different colours are a simple but effective approach to a pattern design!
Elee created this beautiful pink rose pattern that utilizes a few different shapes and plays
with alternate sizes– I think this design feels really classic!
MidniteCreatha created this cute and creepy black and white pattern design that looks
amazing on RedBubble graphic T's!
And from last week's Nyki Way challenge, BillyArt created this artwork with an awesome
blue and purple gradient.

Now let's get onto creating some more art inspiration!
Let's boot up the Segment machine!
In this episode of A Show About Art, we'll be collaborating with Australian artist, Dominic
Taranto.
Dominic's artwork is very diverse in it's applications – but one thing remains consistent;
his amazing free flowing line work which curves and glides as smooth as clouds on a windy
day.
Dominic is also able to reign in his free forming line work into precise geometrical
lines anytime he pleases.
Dominic will be running a little art experiment today, so over to you Dom!
Hi artistic badasses, It's Dominic here.
I'm a fellow artist in Melbourne, I've been practicing here for over ten years.
And today I'm going to be trying something new, something I've never done before.
It's called Automatism, or inspired by Automatism which is a technique the surrealists used
to use.
But without all the jargon, it's really simple.
It's just about trying to switch off your brain and focus on accessing your sub-conscious
and just drawing without worrying too much about what the final piece is going to look
like.
So if you're free and you're brave like I'm trying to be today, get your stuff together
and we're going to try and draw some automatism art.
So what is automatism?
Automatism was a style of, or process of art that the surrealists used to use back in the
day.
Painters, writers, musicians, people, all sorts of creatives used this technique.
And the purpose of it was to challenge the artist to leave all their expectations and
preconceptions of what art should be behind, and just give over totally to the process.
Some people would do it with their eyes shut, some people would even use drugs.
That's not what we're doing today – I wouldn't recommend it.
But for them it was about forgetting what they thought art should look like, what was
pretty, and just accessing a raw part of their sub-conscious and letting that show through
in their work.
So today, I started with a grey lead pencil and I've also set up my laptop with some
really inspirational, favourite music of mine at the moment.
So I played that in the background just to get my mind a little bit open and in a mood.
And so I start with the pencil, and I close my eyes and I start from one side of the paper
and finish on the other side.
And I have no idea what it's going to look like, I try and just let my hands wonder,
let the music sort of move through me a little bit and forget about what I think art should
look like.
And just get a line down on the paper.
And this only takes a few seconds, so so you don't need to worry too much about how long
you spend doing it, I only spend a few seconds drawing my first line.
Once that that base line is down, the rest of it is just up to you – how much you want
to rework the line.
I like to spend a lot of time going back over and and adding thickness, different thickness
pens, embellishing some of the different curves, adding different colours or highlights and
really just sort of exploring and opening up the original line I put down.
Obviously this is not what every automatism artist used to do, but to me, it's just
that's what I like and what I find the prettiest enough, and the fact that you're not, moving
away from the original line means that you're not ruining or you're not losing any of
that raw style or feel of what the honest line was that you first put down.
So I used different thickness pens, I used three for this piece and then I also use a
white posca.
I start with the thickest and go over the base line and then I just use the next thickest
to add some further curves and then obviously a really fine fine line just to add some detail.
And the white posca on the colour paper just adds some some extra dimension and shape to
it and makes it pop off the page a little more.
For my next show I'm actually going to be doing a whole series of these lines where
I use people, friends, family, to go through this process and do their own lifeline and
I'll be combining them together to make one final piece.
So they'll be over lapping lines which will be quite interesting and the way the automatism
technique will come into play is that they won't know what I'm actually doing with
the final piece.
They'll just be asked to do this activity as an individual and then I will go back and
rework the lines and overlap them to make them look like a perfect piece of art that
represents their relationship.
So this is my final piece, I hope you enjoyed it.

After you have your line-work, then you have creative freedom to use whatever paints, pens
or things you want to add on to your line-work!
So get creative, get inventive and get crazy!
I'm going to participate in this challenge as well.
I'm going to pick a song from Royalty Free artist, Teknoaxe and then I'm going to listen
to it and draw my base line work with my eyes closed.
Let's Start!
So right now I have my eyes closed.
I made sure my pencil was on the paper before I closed them though.
And I'm just trying to kind of draw whatever comes to mind.
I kind of had a picture of clouds in my head so kind of like the wind symbolisation so
that explains this kind of windy thing there.
Now I have my eyes open.
I'm not sure how much influence the music I had in my head was, or that I was playing,
was like having over what I was painting, or drawing.
I guess it's not really painting, it's line work right now.
But Yeah.
It just..
I gave over to this experiment which was don't think about it, just draw on what you're
feeling and don't worry if it looks good or bad.
Just..
Just artistically vomit all over the paper which I did in this artwork and I'm happy
that I did it.
Because I think it was very interesting and I would never draw something like this if
it wasn't for this experiment.
Just having that kind of shape, having that kind of linework, it would, it would turn
out into something different.
Its hard to escribe – escribe?
It's hard to describe.
But this experiment really really pushed me in that way of just creating something new
that my art hasn't really looked like before.
Sure, there's like similarities between my style and this piece like the little pattern
work that I'm doing inside the lines right now, but compared to everything else, it really
isn't my art style.
And it did push me to do, to try new things like the little branch kind of things and
keep my linework really organic and not too perfect which most of my artwork I want to
make all the linework exactly perfect.
I couldn't really do this with this experiment.
I'm using a copic pen here, just to colour in the inside of the linework.
I wasn't planning on doing this, but when I just saw it, I just did it straight away
without thinking and I used three similar kind of colours to link it all together.
And at the end of course, I had add a few dots to make it look more organic.
And now I'm scanning it and turning it into a print.
I'm basically using the same method as in the second episode tutorial on how to turn
t-shirts.. artworks into t-shirt designs.
I'll leave a link to that in the description below.
And I used kind of digital colours to replace the copics I that did.
I wasn't too happy with with them and then this is it!
I'm going to upload them to Instagram and Redbubble with the hashtag a show about art.
It looks very interesting on these RedBubble products.

Preview Levante UD vs Real Madrid - Duration: 2:28.
After their disappointment in the King's Cup, Real Madrid have rallied in LaLiga.
And they're finally putting the ball in the back of the net.
They've scored 11 goals in their last two league matches and they're now a stone's throw from getting back in contention.
They do, after all, have a game in hand and the two teams above them, Atletico and Valencia will be facing each other.
They confront a Levante team who are well aware of what they're up against...
"It's Real Madrid and they can change their dynamic from one day to another.
We're taking it as just another game, we'll fight to the end and try and at least come away with a point"
In fact, having gone nine games without a win, the three points are absolutely vital to the well-being of Lopez Muñiz's team.
If that wasn't enough Levante will be missing two key players for this vital clash:
Jose Campaña and Chema are suspended.
On the other hand, they will have Sergio Postigo back after serving a ban and
we could see the long-awaited debut of the so-called Saudi-Arabian pearl: Fahad Al-Muwallad.
Zidane will probably have Isco available for selection,
though just a week ago the 'BBC' trio showed what they are capable of.
United once again in the Mestalla, a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo meant the deadly
trio have now scored 400 goals since they began playing together in 2013.
Real Madrid will be looking to avenge the draw in the Santiago Bernabeu, their first slip up of the year.
Levante are not as freewheeling as they were then, but another great performance against
los Merengues would do a lot to lift their hopes for what remains of a tough season.

Two teams battle for a European place at the Ipurua. Eibar are eighth in the table with 29 points and within
reach of their opponents Sevilla.
Only four points separate the two teams. The Basque team will be hoping to close that gap by winning
for the first time ever in the top flight against the Andalusian side.
Montella's Sevilla have recently shown great improvement in LaLiga and are also semifinalists
in the King's Cup.
They will, however, be without Gabriel Mercado who will be serving a suspension.

Preview Real Sociedad vs RC Ceportivo - Duration: 1:08.
Real Sociedad hope to break their poor run of form against another struggling side, Deportivo de La Coruña.
The team from San Sebastian lost to Villarreal 4-2 last weekend and have still not won in 2018.
"We've got to keep working, working hard day after day, and hope our efforts get results. We've got to focus on
Friday's game against Deportivo and really try and change things round"
The Galician team, managed a 2-2 draw with Levante last time out.
They're now third from bottom in the relegation zone with 17 points and desperately need to start winning.
To add to their woes, Cristobal Parralo is without two key players: Florin Andone and Celso Borges who are
both suspended.
Deportivo now have an ex- Celta player in their squad, Michael Krohn-Dehli.

Preview UD Las Palmas vs Málaga CF - Duration: 1:13.
Las Palmas went down 3-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano.
And this week face Malaga in a relegation zone showdown.
They're the two bottom clubs in the league, with the Andalusian side now firmly entrenched at the foot of the table.
"The match against Malaga is a six-pointer, because if we win we get three points and they lose three.
With the help of our amazing fans we'll be going all out. If we can get those
three points at home then we'll be on our way to climbing back up the table"
Good news for the Canarians is the possible return from injury of Alen Halilovic.
Malaga will be without Chory Castro, who received two yellow cards in his last game.
They do, however, have Samuel Garcia back, and the Nigerian Brown Ideye is also available for selection.

Preview Deportivo Alaves vs RC Celta - Duration: 0:45.
Mendizorrotza awaits a fired-up Celta. The side managed by Unzue have won their last three games
and are unbeaten in five. They've only drawn one of those matches, and that was against Real Madrid.
Alaves haven't lost any of their last seven home games.
They'll be looking to keep up the form they showed at Camp Nou, where, for a while, they had the indisputable
leaders of the league on the ropes.
However, Ruben Duarte and Wakaso saw their fifth yellow and will miss the match.

Preview Atletico Madrid vs Valencia CF - Duration: 2:21.
For the third time in a row Atletico Madrid are at home in the Wanda Metropolitano.
Neither Girona, who came away with a point or Las Palmas, gave them an easy ride.
But the real test will be the visit of the team directly behind them in the league table: Valencia.
Marcelino's side, however, are going through the worst patch of their season.
They've lost three consecutive games in LaLiga, the last at the Mestalla against the other team from
the Spanish capital. They might well lose their grip on third place if they fail to come away with the three points
from the Metropolitano.
If they do manage a victory, they'll be the first team to beat Atletico in the short history of the new stadium.
"It's important we win at home, it puts our fans at ease and gives us the confidence to beat anyone.
Valencia are next up, they're a direct rival to us in this competition. Getting three points in that match and
widening the distance between us and them will be very important when it comes to the end of the season"
Atletico seem to have waved goodbye to their problems in front of goal.
Griezmann has scored in his last three outings,
Fernando Torres was back on target with a cracking goal last weekend,
and Diego Costa could well be in the line-up against Valencia.
As well as that Filipe Luis might have recovered from injury and Vrsaljko, will once again be available to
Simeone having served his ban for five yellows.
The Ches defence will be strengthened by the return of Ruben Vezo, who was suspended for the game
against Real Madrid.
Atletico – Valencia, Simeone against Marcelino: It's a crucial top of the table clash
at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Montilivi hosts a fascinating middle of the table tie.
Pablo Machin's team are undefeated in their last three outings and look close to keeping their spot in the top flight.
Los Leones, are one place and one point behind them.
After their draw with Eibar they're undefeated in ten, although they've only won three of those matches.
Ziganda's side will be hoping Aduriz and Williams, make the difference and live up to their potential.

Loïc Remy is the man to watch at Getafe. He's on loan from Las Palmas until the end of the season and could
well make his debut in the Madrid derby against Leganes.
It's a very evenly matched encounter with both teams enjoying a good run of form.
The home side are undefeated in three and have the same number of points as their rivals, 28.
The visitors are riding high having beaten Espanyol last time out, and they've also qualified for the semi-finals of
the King's Cup.

After the hiccup at Balaidos, Quique Setien's Real Betis will not want to lose sight of a European place.
It's a fight to the bitter end and one of their principal rivals are the team
that visits the Benito Villamarin stadium this week: Villarreal.
"We're going to Benito Villamarín, a ground with a real atmosphere, they're a great
team with great fans. We're going to have to fight very hard to get the three points"
The yellow submarine's aim is not simply Europe but a place in the Champions League,
and they're only a point away from their dreams.
The local hero, Joaquin, will miss the game due to suspension.

Match of the Weekend: RCD Espanyol vs FC Barcelona - Duration: 4:26.
Ernesto Valverde's Fetbol Club Barcelona carried on their triumphant season with a win against Deportivo Alaves.
It wasn't so straightforward for Barça, they had to come from behind, but once again Luis Suarez and Leo Messi
were there when it mattered.
The Uruguayan-Argentinian combination continue to decimate defences; between the two of them they've
scored 19 times in their last 8 games in LaLiga.
"We want to keep enjoying ourselves together on the pitch, and improve certain areas. There's still a way to go.
We've got to treat each game as it if it were the last, and work as hard as we can. We're now in the most important
and difficult phase of the season."
This weekend Barça are facing an Espanyol team who are far from their best.
They've started the second half of the season with two defeats against Sevilla and Leganes and their European
dreams are fading fast.
Their coach, Quique Sanchez Flores, couldn't hide his dissatisfaction after his side's defeat at the Butarque.
"In certain positions we need players that can lead the line and take responsibility. We looked like orphans out
there today. We lacked the defensive qualities that gave us so much confidence and security last year.
We lacked the level-headedness that was there last season"
This Sunday will see the third Barcelona derby of the season, as the two teams also met up in the Cup.
A two-legged encounter, in which Barcelona came out on top though Espanyol made it as difficult as possible and
indeed won the first leg, their first ever derby victory at Cornella.
Barça have visited the RCDE stadium eight times in LaLiga, winning five and drawing three.
Luis Suarez got a brace in their 3-0 win last year.
Espanyol, will be looking to repeat that cup performance when Barcelona suffered a setback for the first time
in months, and hoping that they can once again spring a surprise on the league leaders.
"We've got to perform well again, stay focussed from the first minute 'til the last. We'll be looking to do what we
did in the first leg of the cup but first we've got to believe in ourselves and work really hard"
Barcelona, are still without the injured Dembele and Vermaelen.
The only change from the side that played against Alaves is the possible return of Sergio Busquets.
The home side for their part will have everyone available except for Pablo Piatti, who is still nursing an injury
It looks like it's going to be a cracking Catalan derby in the RCDE Stadium this Sunday.
Barça will be going all out to further their dominance of the league.
Espanyol want to give hope to their fans by overcoming the strongest possible opponent.
It's the big game of the matchday weekend in LaLiga Santander.

Hello, today, my story is called: Yvan and the wolves
One Friday evening, in December 1982, in a Russian village, Ivan was walking
to a communist political meeting in order to make a speech.
He had to get to the next village at 8 o'clock.
Apart from two young people, who were having fun ice-skating on the frozen lake, at the end of the village,
Ivan met few people. Night was falling.
He walked with a determined step, remembering about his speech in order not to forget anything.
And he plunged deeper into the forest.
After some steps under the firs, he has to switch on his torch
Realizing he could see almost nothing
And, by lighting it up, he thought he heard a noise behind him! He overturned and illuminated the way
into the direction where he thought he had heard the noise.
He couldn't see anything.
But just after he overturned, he heard the cry of the wolves that were following his footprints.
"It's too late to go back now." He thought"
And he started to run as fast as possible
But the wolves rapidly caught him! I am lost! he finally said
And I don't have time to ask if God exists or not…"
He fell on his knees, breathless
"Oh God ! Save me from the wolves!
If you help me, I will be your servant!"
At this tight moment, as he could smell
The breath of the wolves around him, he saw them back off.
He stood up, and tried to leave slowly, without any abrupt gesture
But the wolves turned to him again, and started growling showing their fangs…
Once again, he fell to his knees and prayed. "My God, I have fought against you until now,
But today, I give you my life…"
And all night long, Ivan remains on his knees to pray.
The wolves lay down next to him.
Early the next morning, the wolves got up and left him alone.
So, alone, and face to face with himself, Ivan admitted that God had answered his prayer…
He decided to go to the the nearest headquarters of the communist party.
As soon as he arrived, he told his friends what had happened to him the night before.
But nobody believed him, and they all laughed, thinking he had invented this story
As an excuse for not having been to the meeting of the day before.
But Ivan remained immovable, gave up saying : "Go to the forest by yourselves
And the wolves will teach you: God exists!"
After a short time, Ivan walked into the snow and prayed God,
Quoting a prayer made many centuries before by the King David,
"Then, they cried to the Lord in their trouble and he delivered them from all their distress."

Being here at ESO has been great for my career because ESO encourages a proactive mindset.
Being a student at ESO is definitely a good launching point for a career in astronomy
I feel like I've been challenged and been given the opportunity to really push myself to develop
The studentship at ESO exposes me to a large variety of ideas
ESO studentships give PhD students the chance to work on their doctoral project for one to two years at ESO
They remain under the formal supervision of their home university
but also have the co-supervision of an ESO staff astronomer and the mentorship of an ESO Fellow.
Studentships are available both at ESO's Headquarters in Garching near Munich, Germany, and at ESO's astronomy centre in Santiago, Chile.
ESO Headquarters is situated in one of the most active research centres in Europe,
boasting one of the highest concentrations of astronomers in the world.
Leading scientists, instrument experts and other professionals are within easy reach.
They provide students with many training opportunities which will prove very valuable for their future careers.
I think what I most enjoy about the studentship is all the people
and it's not just because they are astronomers but a lot of them are engineers or people from outreach
so yet again I learn so much about astronomy outside what I do most of the time.
I enjoy the most the possibility to explore things and to talk to a lot of people.
What I enjoy the most about being a student at ESO is that it puts you at the centre
of the thriving astronomy community
and it also gives you the opportunity to network.
In addition to the studentships at ESO's Headquarters, ESO offers a similar programme in Chile.
Here, in Chile, it's a great opportunity to speak to the experts in instrumentation
and to really get to grips with the instruments that you're using.
One can get a hands-on view and a practical experience of how the observations are taken.
Wherever they are based, students at ESO research a wide range of cutting-edge astronomical topics...
I study the evolution of galaxies.
My primary research is in supermassive black holes.
Here at ESO I work on how stars and star clusters are formed.
ESO is a place to challenge yourself and get the opportunity to learn new things
and better yourself as an astronomer and as a researcher.
ESO also puts strong emphasis on supporting and nurturing students in their personal development,
as well as encouraging a wider atmosphere of collaboration, friendship and respect...
ESO is a unique place.
I enjoy the most the non-hierarchical, friendly and stimulating atmosphere.
I enjoy most the opportunity to speak with astronomers, to speak with fellows and staff,
and to get new ideas, and to learn something new everyday.
I like the fact that there is a very strong social support at ESO.
If you would like to become one of our students and enjoy the benefits of spending some of your PhD at ESO
apply to our programmes in Chile or Germany.
Don't forget to take into account the advice from our current or past students!
Advice I'd give to prospective fellows and students would be
— whatever area you're interested in, you should really throw yourself at it.

and always be on the lookout for that one new piece of information that could revolutionise your project.
I would firmly encourage you to apply.

So my advice to students is: do it!
I never regret that I actually applied because it turnout is amazing
