Youtube daily report Feb 5 2018

- So what are we saying,

Haydn is the best,

basically.

(laughs)

Yeah.

- Haydn is King.

- And his quartet writing in particular,

and these quartets even in particular.

- So we were hoping to,

you know,

get audience members to come away from this going,

"Wow I want to discover more Opus 20 and more Haydn".

We're hoping that the students here at U of M

are going to be the same like,

"I wanna learn Haydn and perform Haydn and study Haydn",

because it speaks and opens up all these channels

through the other composers that follow.

For us,

Opus 20 is such a seminal moment in music history.

Right?

- Oh for sure,

yeah.

- It's so underappreciated,

it's unknown,

both for audiences and players alike.

I think it works as a set of six,

for a number of reasons,

mostly because the music is so remarkable.

But it's so varied.

Emotionally varied,

gesturally varied.

We have three that end in full four-part fugues,

which was totally groundbreaking.

We have three that end in rondos,

already that breaks up the vibe.

And the emotional scope,

the landscape,

is so varied.

I think it works really well as a listening

and performance experience in a whole.

(string quartet playing)

Imagine,

I'm sure a lot of people who are going to come.

don't know these works intimately

and are going to be discovering some of this music

for the first time.

It's a tremendous experience to hear some of this stuff.

Things that you didn't really know existed

that were so powerful and so similar and so inventive.

- It's so true,

what you just said,

that didn't know existed.

I mean,

how many people will come to this concert

not having heard a large portion of the Opus 20s.

There were at least two of the Opus 20s

that I didn't know at all until we learned them

in the last few years.

It's really hard to keep up with all this stuff.

And it's so interesting and creative.

If the audience is bored hearing six Opus 20s,

it's not Haydn's fault.

It will be our fault.

So we have to make sure that we bring this music

to life and keep it interesting,

because the interest is there.

The variety is certainly there.

- That's the thing you forget.

You know, you think about Classical Period music being,

well,

it's all sort of the same vibe,

and the raised pinky finger,

and you know.

You play at weddings and the rank.

But this is such,

I mean,

you go from Opus 20 number one,

which is that really beautiful pastoral opening movement.

- I know.

- But the devastatingly emotional,

simple,

but powerful,

slow movement.

And then for instance,

f minor 20 number five is this stormy,

dramatic,

Beethovenian,

dark,

brooding.

The first two movements are devastating,

so you know,

the emotional journey is much more than you may guess

from a set of quartets written in 1771.

- Right.

- And that's I think,

one of the reasons it makes for a really interesting

evening of musical journey,

so to speak.

So I hope,

you're going to laugh,

you're going to cry,

you're going to be shocked,

hopefully will no doze off.

- No,

no.

- But I think,

I mean the balance,

I was practicing today,

you know I love Beethoven,

but he tends to ramble.

You know some of these quartets,

they go on for 50 minutes.

- Oh yeah.

- The balance of time,

he always spends exactly the right amount of time

on a thing,

or a movement,

or an idea before he moves on.

So I think it's very modern in some sense,

it doesn't test the focus of the audience and the player.

Alternative Learning Center's J-term - Duration: 1:41.

The Alternative Learning Center

at the Alta Vista Campus strives to enhance

the alternative classroom setting for our students.

And its J-Term is helping support that environment.

Giving students a break from their usual

academic schedule, J-Term immerses students

in two intensive courses during the month of January.

It's important that the ALC has this opportunity,

because we are the alternative program for the district.

This is one of the experiences

that are unique to the ALC

that help differentiate us

from the traditional school experience.

Students have the opportunity to participate

in interesting subjects

and engage in project-based learning.

We're gonna need two bags.

Whether it's to grow and sell microgreens,

assemble programmable robots,

or designing wooden projects for clients,

J-Term leads students to a higher level

of exploration and experimentation.

I heard that there was a robotics class here.

And I was like, "Oh, okay. I'm gonna try that out,"

because I like to do a little bit of everything,

try out something new.

Well, I'm taking woodworking.

We're building projects and doing more work and stuff.

We're building a stool.

After that we're gonna build a cabinet for the school.

It's fun.

By the end of the month,

our students will have further developed skills

of problem solving and collaborative learning

while creating a finished product

that embodies their studies.

These robotic students, they spent almost four hours

trying to get their robots to go around the track

that's on the floor.

No other class would I be able to devote four hours

to do one activity like that.

So that's why J-Term's pretty awesome.

J-Term provides an additional

alternative classroom experience

that's helping foster growth

in our Alternative Learning Center student's

academic achievement.

BTS THEORIES: Does a potato mean something too? - Duration: 12:26.

I'm back with the new video with YOUR OWN BTS theories!

Based on the comments from the Highlight Reel theory videos, Love Yourself and so on

I hope that you enjoyed the previous part and you also had fun reading the theories with me

And you got to know a lot more

Thank you for all the comments and thank you for watching but let's move to the topic!

My mind cannot take it anymore

Me and my friend think that Big Hit has everything planned since their debut, including the end of BTS' career

I talked about it lately with Ann and we agree with you

Another complicated theory from me:

Yellow color relates to V's suicide in Prologue

Moving to Highlight Reel: Jin meets a girl who lost her notebook

she gets hit by a car

Jin recalls Jungkook's car accident

I totally agree!

And he probably caused this car accident

I also agree with this one! Especially because in Run we saw Jungkook looking at the driver

and Jin was the driver

The girl gets hit by a car and at that moment and a quote appears: what if we turn back time?

Jin turnes back time and holds the flowers (6 of them)

It can symbolize the rest of the members

and Jin wants to protect them

Question for you: are you interested in the time traveller theory?

Let me know!

What happened at the sea?

V told his friend what he did during this trip

His friends are loyal, they don't say anything but this secret has a bad impact on them

They used to have a lot of problems before but now everything got worse

Crazy parties, too much alcohol, drugs, medicine, vandalism, suicide...

And the distance between them grew bigger

In fact, it's everything we saw in INU and other

V gets arrested and calls Rap Mon but he doesn't pick up because he doesn't believe he can help him

This is also what we can tell by watching Highlight Reel

Namjoon didn't know how to help V

American Ballet Theatre dancers visit Southeast MI schools ahead of Feb. performances | UMS Presents - Duration: 1:53.

(piano music)

- [Woman] Side, side left, back.

Hi, I'm Erica Lall, I'm a professional ballet dancer

with American Ballet Theater.

We're here working with schools

in Detroit, Jackson and Ann Arbor.

We've been teaching master classes around the cities.

And we're gonna be here February 8th to 11th

performing "Romeo and Juliet" at the Detroit Opera House.

It's one of my favorite ballets, all the drama,

the costumes are amazing, the score is beautiful.

- Hi Erica.

- Hello, how are you?

- Oh I had a question for you.

- Yeah?

- How old did you have to be to do that dance, whatever,

how old did you had to be?

- To start dancing?

- Yeah.

- You can start dancing at any age.

- Oh really?

- It can be two, or it can be 90.

You can start dancing at any--

- You want to keep this as isolated and as still as possible

and engaged right in your stomach here.

Ballet you know is usually about fairy tales,

and this sort of mystique of romance, but there's,

there is violence and hatred and sort of mass fighting

between the Capulets and the Montagues.

And then in the midst of all this there's deep seeded love

between Romeo and Juliet.

It's a tragic tale, as everybody knows,

with Romeo and Juliet, but the dancing is sublime,

the dancers are from core to principal are pushed

to their limits, as far as their emotional capacity,

and their dedication to each of their characters.

So you absolutely can't miss it.

It's a treat for everybody and all ages.

I loved watching you on stage,

and when I got to see

Underground Railroad- - What I was going to say.

- Okay,

we're just going to say the same thing about each other.

(opera singing)

(hip hop music)

- I think we're getting access to maybe a lot of what

white people feel about race, as opposed to people of color,

and I thought what you guys did with that show was

really exciting, and I was gonna ask you more about

how did you guys make it?

Did you go to Scott, did Scott go to you?

- Well it was a mutual coming to but in different ways.

We were still in school, and he wanted to make a

one-person show out of this experience that he had had.

But meanwhile, he and I had been assigned to

choreograph a dance together from our dance teacher.

We tried to make this dance and the dance, it was very bad.

(laughter)

It was really tragically bad.

So while we're futzing through this thing,

he was like well instead of doing this dance, how bout we

turn this one-person show into like a two-person show?

("Misty" by Sarah Vaughan)

(face slap)

I didn't hurt you, did I?

- Yes.

(laughter)

- How did Schmerm come to be?

- Schmerm came to be because everyone kept telling me

that I needed to make my own show because I was never seeing

bodies like mine on stage or people like me.

I always say I saw Queen Latifah in Set It Off,

and I was like oh my god, there

(laughter)

I wouldn't say there I am, but there is-

- I think they go by Dana Owens.

(laughter)

I'm just kidding, don't get me started about that.

- I know. Well, I think that was what was heartbreaking,

is that she never played that person again.

Be totally honest.

Still got it.

It seems like a lot of people are interested

in a lot of dialogue and- - That's exciting.

- It's really exciting that people are

actively wanting to talk about things

and engage- - And think.

The spirit of wanting to talk about things

and people wanting to be pushed or people asking,

that's pretty rare, would be nice.

Martin Katz on, What's in a Song? | UMS presents - Duration: 1:40.

Hello everybody I'm Martin Katz and for more than three decades I've been chair

of the program here at the University of Michigan which is about accompanying and

chamber music. We call it, collaborative piano.

To speak a little bit about the concert specifically; there are songs in French,

German, Italian, English, Greek, Russian, Czech, and one song with no words at all.

I really have tried to use the contrast, so to push the contrast envelope as much

as I can in terms of not only what the four soloists are performing but in what

order they're performing in. So it doesn't go in chronological order or any

very accepted traditional order. It's it's kind of bang bang bang

bang a little a little bit a little of that.

You're really lucky to have donors who are devoted to song

and all vocal music actually. And that's Mr. and Mrs. Binkow, Maurice and Linda Binkow.

I guess the answer to the question, "What's in a song?" would be, "Everything."

It would be easier to say, "What's not in a song?" "Nothing." (laughs)

Haydn Mega-Concert with St. Lawrence String Quartet | UMS presents - Duration: 3:38.

- So what are we saying,

Haydn is the best,

basically.

(laughs)

Yeah.

- Haydn is King.

- And his quartet writing in particular,

and these quartets even in particular.

- So we were hoping to,

you know,

get audience members to come away from this going,

"Wow I want to discover more Opus 20 and more Haydn".

We're hoping that the students here at U of M

are going to be the same like,

"I wanna learn Haydn and perform Haydn and study Haydn",

because it speaks and opens up all these channels

through the other composers that follow.

For us,

Opus 20 is such a seminal moment in music history.

Right?

- Oh for sure,

yeah.

- It's so underappreciated,

it's unknown,

both for audiences and players alike.

I think it works as a set of six,

for a number of reasons,

mostly because the music is so remarkable.

But it's so varied.

Emotionally varied,

gesturally varied.

We have three that end in full four-part fugues,

which was totally groundbreaking.

We have three that end in rondos,

already that breaks up the vibe.

And the emotional scope,

the landscape,

is so varied.

I think it works really well as a listening

and performance experience in a whole.

(string quartet playing)

Imagine,

I'm sure a lot of people who are going to come.

don't know these works intimately

and are going to be discovering some of this music

for the first time.

It's a tremendous experience to hear some of this stuff.

Things that you didn't really know existed

that were so powerful and so similar and so inventive.

- It's so true,

what you just said,

that didn't know existed.

I mean,

how many people will come to this concert

not having heard a large portion of the Opus 20s.

There were at least two of the Opus 20s

that I didn't know at all until we learned them

in the last few years.

It's really hard to keep up with all this stuff.

And it's so interesting and creative.

If the audience is bored hearing six Opus 20s,

it's not Haydn's fault.

It will be our fault.

So we have to make sure that we bring this music

to life and keep it interesting,

because the interest is there.

The variety is certainly there.

- That's the thing you forget.

You know, you think about Classical Period music being,

well,

it's all sort of the same vibe,

and the raised pinky finger,

and you know.

You play at weddings and the rank.

But this is such,

I mean,

you go from Opus 20 number one,

which is that really beautiful pastoral opening movement.

- I know.

- But the devastatingly emotional,

simple,

but powerful,

slow movement.

And then for instance,

f minor 20 number five is this stormy,

dramatic,

Beethovenian,

dark,

brooding.

The first two movements are devastating,

so you know,

the emotional journey is much more than you may guess

from a set of quartets written in 1771.

- Right.

- And that's I think,

one of the reasons it makes for a really interesting

evening of musical journey,

so to speak.

So I hope,

you're going to laugh,

you're going to cry,

you're going to be shocked,

hopefully will no doze off.

- No,

no.

- But I think,

I mean the balance,

I was practicing today,

you know I love Beethoven,

but he tends to ramble.

You know some of these quartets,

they go on for 50 minutes.

- Oh yeah.

- The balance of time,

he always spends exactly the right amount of time

on a thing,

or a movement,

or an idea before he moves on.

So I think it's very modern in some sense,

it doesn't test the focus of the audience and the player.
