If you are looking for ten quick actuary exam tips then you have come to the
right place... for five of them. Stop the presses!
Big news! Michelle has made an actuary YouTube friend! This is a collab
video. I teamed up with Brea from Etched Actuarial to come up with ten actuary exam
tips for you. Be sure to head over to the Etched actuarial YouTube channel and check out
her five tips if I've said it once I've said it a million times
not every study tip is gonna work for every person and I think that getting
perspective from a lot of different people is gonna be helpful for you to
just choose what works what doesn't and curate the perfect study method for you
which just makes me even more excited about this YouTube collab be sure to
send her some love let her know that you came from me maybe you subscribe to her
or maybe subscribe to me maybe thumbs it up maybe thumbs me up I don't know
okay done with the YouTube stuff let's get on with that tips. Tip number one
is to find a study environment that you work well in I know some people who do
this as simply is just sitting on the opposite side of the kitchen table when
they study when I sit here I'm in study mode when I sit here I'm in food mode I
know some people who like to go to libraries some people who like to study
at home now I'm not personally recommending this but the majority of my
study hours were spent sitting on the couch under a blanket wearing pajamas
with a cup of tea I wanted to be super comfy when studying when I tell people
this they often tell me that they would have fallen asleep find what works for
you in my later exams I tended to print less and use my computer more to try to
save trees I don't know help the planet but instead of sitting on the couch I
would sit at a desk and what I found key there was having two monitors if you're
gonna be studying with the screen you want to be able to look at multiple
screens at the same time so you're not constantly switching tabs and like
remembering what was there remembering what was there having two screens I
found really helpful I also use study music to keep me in the study
environment but I made a whole video about that so you can watch that if you
want it tip number two is to break your studying down into smaller more
manageable goals or what I like to call my study iterations I talked about how I
track these iterations in my study tracker video but basically I would
break it down into things like read all the material do the odd numbered
questions do the even questions make flashcards little
bite-sized pieces that I can iterate through the entire material tip number
three is to make and use your formula sheet early on in the process I cannot
tell you how many times I've gone through the entirety of the material
without making a formula sheet the first time and then the second time I go
through it I'm like why didn't I do this already like it would have been so much
easier if I had made my formula sheet the first time around so that I could
use it when studying the second time around first time you make the formula
sheet you're just making it just jot down your formulas the second time
you're actually using it so you can see where there are deficiencies where
you're missing formulas, where formulas confuse you and then you can add little
annotations or notes or circles to try to identify those problem spots tip
number four is to use all available study material I'd highly recommend
buying at least one study manual maybe buy adapt which is great for practice
exams but there are tons of free study resources too
people post their study notes to actuarial outpost some study manuals
will make free sections of their manual available online use it friends and
classmates who are also studying are a great resource ask them questions
use them to pace yourself if you got it use it. My fifth tip is to schedule in
guilt-free time off from studying with actuary exams you have to study for
months independently which is so different from studying at school and
honestly I think that a huge part of the battle is just staying in a good mental
state for some of my actuarial exams I didn't schedule in time off into my
study planning every time that I would take time off I would just feel guilty
about it when I started consciously saying tonight is not a study night I'm
not gonna feel guilty about it I just was able to relax I'd feel better and
that I'd be more motivated the next day for the next five out of the ten tips be
sure to head over to Bria's channel and check out her video thumbs up subscribe
