China to unleash AI nuclear submarine able to destroy continents without HUMAN control - DAILY NEWS - Duration: 4:09.

China to unleash AI nuclear submarine able to 'destroy continents' without HUMAN control

AN ARTIFICALLY intelligent nuclear submarine

that has "its own thoughts" and could launch attacks without human oversight is being developed

by China.

China is working on a revolutionary new submarine that is expected to blaze a trail for the

use of AI technology for military purposes, a researcher close to the project has revealed.

Nuclear submarines with "enormous power of destruction" are being installed with

AI systems with their "own thoughts", the researcher, who did not wish to be named,

said.

The AI will allow Chinese submarines "with enough nuclear arsenals to destroy a continent"

to think and make decisions independently of human commanders.

The researcher said the "brain" of current submarines "is actually quite small",

but with the power of AI, warfare could be waged with machine-like precision.

Commanding naval officers and the 100 to 300-strong crew would be required to do minimal work

during deployments at sea, the researcher said.

The project would give China's large navy an extraordinary advantage over enemies, rendering

most of Donald Trump's submarines redundant in comparison.

Nuclear submarines built with AI technology – a landmark innovation – have never before

been developed by China's military.

The AI system, which mimics the human brain, can crunch large amounts of data to acquire

knowledge, improve skills and develop new strategy without human intervention.

The AI could detect threats from enemy submarines more quickly than human operators.

"What the military cares most about is not fancy features," the researcher said, describing

the project.

"What they care most is the thing does not screw up amid the heat of a battle."

The race to create submarines with advanced AI technology was commented on by a US military

researcher last year.

Joe Marino, CEO of Rite-Solutions, a defence firm supporting the US Navy, said China's

AI submarine programme could seriously undermine US military power.

"Without matching other countries' advances in AI submarine technology] our CO (commanding

officers) would be fighting an opponent who could make faster, more informed and better

decisions," he wrote in an article on the subject.

"Combined with undersea technology advancements by near-peer competitors such as Russia and

China in areas such as stealth, sensors, weapons, this 'cognitive advantage' could threaten

US undersea dominance."

Zhu Min, a leading scientist of China's deep water exploration programme, said "a

lot of progress has been achieved" recently in the field of AI.

"There seems to be hope around the corner," said Zhu, a researcher at the Institute of

Acoustics with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Older submarine computers have needed "step-by-step" guidance from humans, but AI has the potential

to "change the game under the sea", Zhu said.

However, he said equipping a nuclear submarine with a powerful AI system would not be without

its dangers.

If an AI submarine was to go rogue, "we may have a runaway submarine with enough nuclear

arsenals to destroy a continent," he said.

"This is definitely a risk the authorities should consider when introducing AI to a sub,"

he said, in a warning that wouldn't be out of place in Terminator: Rise of the Machines.
