finishing up some stain while actually doing tomorrow staining we're not

finished with that project yet and we have a really cool opportunity this

afternoon to go on a management hunt for a seka hind so Taylor and I are gonna

have some crossbows and we're gonna both see if we can shoot a/c Kehinde yeah

Harmonizing the major scale

Hi ! Let's see together what harmonizing a scale means

it's something super useful : it helps understanding chords, composing, improvising, understanding chord/scale relations...

so what's "harmonizing the major scale" ?

let's start by explaining what is the major scale

the major scale is a group of 7 notes separated by distinct intervals : WWHWWWH (W = whole step, H = half step)

if the first note is C, the others will be D E F G A B C (here they are on a single string)

this famous "C D E F G A B C" is often how major scale is intoduced

with this group of 7 notes we can do lots of things : play melodies, but also... build chords !

the most common way to build chords is to play "triads" (groups of 3 notes)

let's start with the first note : C. We go up 2 notes : E. Again : G. So we'll play C E G at the same time

C E G is called "C major chord" and is simply written "C"

if we go from D : D F A, the "D minor chord" written Dm

for every note of the C major scale we can build a chord : we'll then have 7 chords containing only notes of the C major scale

THIS is harmonizing a scale : creating chords with its notes

chords can be major or minor, it depends on the structure of the scale

as the major scale has a defined structure, every degree of the scale has a defined quality (M or m)

the first chord of a major scale (the first degree) will always be major

the second degree will always be minor (Dm here)

degree III is minor / IV is M / V is M / VI is m / VII is diminished

the other is the quality (M/m/dim) of each degree of the scale

the next chord (II) is minor and a whole step above : let's go up 2 frets and play a minor chord shape !

it's a Bbm chord. You don't have to know it to play it, but it's better if you do

then a minor chord a whole step above (Cm the III)

then a major chord a half step above (Db the IV)

a whole step, major chord (Eb the V)

a whole step, minor chord (Fm the VI)

a whole step, diminished chord (G° the VII)

you have to be able to know if the VI chord in a major scale is major or minor
