Youtube daily report Dec 2 2018

Trump at the G-20 summit to NOT sign statement supporting commitment to fight climate change

President Donald Trump was the only leader at the Group of 20 Summit in Argentina who refused to sign a statement reiterating a pledge to combat climate change.

At the conclusion of the Buenos Aires conference, leaders of the forum which consists of 19 countries and the European Union agreed to fix the world trading system - but only 19 of them agreed to support the Paris accord on fighting climate change.

Applause rose up in the hall Saturday as the leaders, including Trump, signed off on a final statement at the end of a two-day summit. The statement acknowledges flaws in the world trading system and calls for reforming the World Trade Organization.

It doesn't mention protectionism however, because negotiators said the U.S. The statement says 19 of the members reiterated their commitment to the Paris climate accord but the U.S. reiterates its decision to withdraw.

The non-binding agreement was reached after difficult all-night talks by diplomats. A copy was obtained by The Associated Press.

Trump remains a skeptic of climate change. In an interview Tuesday with The Washington Post, the President said he doubted the scientific consensus that the planet is getting warmer because of man-made pollutants that are being released into the air.

'One of the problems that a lot of people like myself, we have very high levels of intelligence but we're not necessarily such believers,' the President said.

'You look at our air and our water and it's right now at a record clean.

When asked whether climate change is caused by humans, Trump said: 'As to whether or not it's man-made and whether or not the effects that you're talking about are there, I don't see it - not nearly like it is.

Last week, the federal government released a wide-ranging report which found that climate change will cost the U.S. economy hundreds of billions of dollars by the end of the century, damaging everything from human health to infrastructure and agricultural production.

The report came out on Black Friday, a holiday for most Americans and one of the busiest shopping days of the year, leading critics to charge Trump with trying to bury the findings.

The Congressionally-mandated report, written with the help of more than a dozen U.S.

government agencies and departments, outlined the projected impacts of global warming in every corner of American society, in a dire warning at odds with the Trump administration's pro-fossil fuels agenda.

Trump on Monday stuck to his position, saying he did not believe the findings reached by his own administration. 'I don't believe it,' he told reporters at the White House before he left for campaign rallies in Mississippi.

'I've seen it, I've read some of it, and it's fine,' he added.

Pregnant Meghan Markle snubs Kate Middleton's hospital: Duchess may break royal tradition at birth - Duration: 11:31.

Pregnant Meghan Markle snubs Kate Middleton's hospital: Duchess may break royal tradition at birth.

When Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, gives birth to her first child with Prince Harry next year, don't expect it to be at the Lindo Wing at London's St Mary's Hospital, the traditional hospital of the royal family.

The Duchess of Sussex reportedly has been looking at other birthing "options", sources have told Vanity Fair, suggesting that she might deviate from tradition and not have their baby at the private maternity wing where Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to all three of her children and where Prince William and Harry were both born.

The hospital, which costs upwards of £7,500 ($A13,000) to give birth in, also welcomed George and Amal Clooney's twins in 2017.

One of the birthing options could also include a home birth, the publication reports, or choosing a hospital close to their new home Frogmore Cottage, on the Windsor estate.

Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, is also reportedly encouraging her daughter to have a natural birth.

"[Doria] wants to be on hand to help Meghan and Harry with the baby. Doria will be involved and if she's involved she will be encouraging Meg to go for a natural birth".

Meghan has been reading up on natural-birthing techniques, including hypnobirthing, which Kate is said to have used during her three labours.

The exact due date of the royal baby remains a closely guarded secret but Kensington Palace has said the baby is due in the UK spring.

The Duchess of Sussex's birthing plan isn't the only way the former actress plans to break with tradition when it comes to having a royal child.

She also doesn't want her child to be forced to wear shorts.. "She's determined her child won't be paraded around in little shorts like Prince George," a source told UK entertainment magazine, Heat.

The reason Prince George is rarely seen in trousers is because it's a silent British class marker, an etiquette expert told The Sun.

William Hanson told the publication that trousers are deemed too "suburban" for a royal.

He said while he doubts there "would have been a memo sent around Kensington Palace telling George to wear shorts", Kate would be aware of clothing protocol.

"I don't think that the sartorial rule of shorts for young boys would be a new one for Catherine," Mr Hanson said.

"Not only does The Duchess of Cambridge have to worry about dressing herself but she has to dress her own children appropriately.

"She has to find a balance between royal tradition, heritage and more proletariat customs, such as the 'suburban' habit of making young boys wear trousers".

Heat has also reported that Meghan is said to want to "help normalise" breastfeeding by doing so in public and is keen for Harry, 34, to be seen carrying their baby.

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton's feud explained.. The Duchess of Sussex, formerly known as Meghan Markle, and the Duchess of Cambridge, formerly known as Kate Middleton, don't particularly like each other

There, I said it.. This week many royal correspondents and commentators — the vast majority in the pocket of the PR teams for the royal households — tap-danced and tiptoed around the thorny issue, The Sun's Dan Wootton writes.

But, as loyal readers know, I prefer to tell it straight and simply report the facts as they are, which is why I was the first to reveal this very royal feud.

On November 9, in an exclusive that was much discussed by royal watchers internationally, I reported that the fed up Queen (God bless her) warned Prince Harry over Meghan's behaviour before their wedding.

The awkward conversation had been sparked by a dust up about which tiara Meghan wanted to wear on her big day

It prompted the monarch to tell her beloved grandson: "Meghan cannot have whatever she wants".

The second revelation in the story was about a row between Meghan and Kate over an issue close to the heart of most royals: The treatment of their staff.

An impeccable royal insider told me: "Meghan can be difficult. She has very high standards and is used to working in a Hollywood environment.

"However, there's a different degree of respect in the royal household and Kate has always been very careful about how she has acted around staff".

In further conversations … I've learned Kate was particularly furious about the way Meghan had specifically spoken to members of the Cambridge's staff.

The source explained: "Her and Kate fell out when she b*****ked Kate's staff. Kate said, "That's unacceptable, they're my staff and I speak to them'".

In that context you can understand why the revelation that Meghan's assistant Melissa Touabti, who had previously worked for Robbie Williams and Ayda Field, had quit after just six months was a touch awkward.

But the further revelation this week in the royal-friendly Daily Telegraph UK that Meghan made Kate cry during Princess Charlotte's bridesmaid dress fitting was monumentally bad PR.

All that said, are you meant to adore your sister-in-law? Not really. Does this row mean I am pointing the finger at Meghan for being a diva? Absolutely not.

In fact, there's something exciting about a bold American newcomer to the family being anything other than shy and retiring

If any family needs shaking up, it's the Windsor's.. Just look at the impact of Princess Diana — who was also branded a diva and difficult — in the Eighties

She reinvented the royals for ever.. The disagreement over staff tells us everything we need to know about why Meghan and Kate don't get on — their backgrounds and how they ended up as princesses could not be more different.

Kate was devoted to Wills from the moment they met at St Andrew's uni and wanted more than anything to be accepted into the royal family, even though she wasn't from blue blood.

Her family supported her — there were no messy feuds and few embarrassing incidents.

Besides the time Kate went out in a slightly risqué outfit during her brief break from William, it's been close to a royal fairytale on the surface.

And Kate never lived an adult life as anything other than a likely future royal. The same cannot be said for Meghan, whose journey into British royalty would have seemed farcical if it had been penned by a Hollywood writer.

A highly ambitious young actress with a messy family background, who posed in skimpy dresses on the American version of Deal or No Deal and shared her intimate thoughts in a secret Hollywood blog, is set up with her British prince who falls head over heels.

By contrast, Meghan was 36 by the time she officially became a royal — unfathomably the same age that Diana died.

She was a star in her own right. She had lived through one failed marriage. She worked on her own charity projects

And her eccentric family were not going to shut up and fall into line.. Meghan was never going to be the compliant princess like her sister-in-law and nor should she be

But somewhat obviously, the pair were never bosom buddies and their relationship hardened as Meghan expected Hollywood standards from the relatively down-to-Earth royal household.

Meghan soon realised she didn't want to follow the benchmark set by Kate in terms of her duties and life, contributing to the decision to set-up their first family home at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, rather than next door to the Cambridge's.

Let's not let the women take all the heat in this situation because Wills and Harry themselves have engaged in their own behind-the-scenes battle.

Particularly telling was the revelation by Prince Charles' biographer Robert Jobson that William had purposely shown off his new buzz cut in order to push Harry and Meghan off the front page during their high profile first visit to Wales earlier this year

It worked.. Does this friction mean the royal Fab Four is forever over? No. This family is the best at papering over cracks in very awkward relationships to put their best foot forward in public — just look at Prince Charles and his prickly brother Prince Edward.

But have no doubt Meghan and Harry have ambitions to change the world — and don't want to be limited by the constraints William has as the second-in-line to throne.

The drama over the next few years will be better than any episode of Suits.. 'Glossy' Meghan Markle and 'dutiful' Kate issues echo another bitter royal feud.

Rumours of tension between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have been swirling for the last few weeks, as multiple sources claim the Duchesses don't get on.

"They are not natural chums," a royal aide has now "cautiously" admitted to the Daily Mail.

The two Duchesses are undoubtedly very different characters from different backgrounds, with Kate having aristocratic ties and Meghan being a former Hollywood actress.

Now royal experts are saying that the sisters-in-laws' differences mirror a previous royal feud, between the Queen Mother and Wallis Simpson - which, it seems, was a far more dramatic row.

Like Meghan, Wallis was an American divorcee. She captured King Edward VIII's heart, and he decided to abdicate, choosing love over his duty, and gave up his spot on the throne in 1936.

The Queen Mother's husband, the younger brother of Edward, then reluctantly took the throne as George VI, and was said to have felt very unprepared for the role.

The Queen mum blamed Wallis for her husband's early death when he died in 1952, aged just 56.

Elizabeth never married again, remaining a widow for the next 50 years until she died in 2002, aged 101.

Although nothing remotely as dramatic as this has happened between Meghan and Kate, people have observed some similarities - and it's mostly down to their difference in character.

Royal experts Richard Kay and Geoffrey Levy write that there are also parallels in the way Harry and Edward chose to distance themselves from royal life.

"There are uneasy similarities in the frosty relationship between Meghan and the Duchess of Cambridge as there were between Wallis and the then Duchess of York, later the Queen Mother," they wrote in the Daily Mail.

They describe Kate as "reminiscent of the young Queen Mother, dutiful, committed and cautious" and Meghan as "a glossy American".

But not everyone sees the parallels, Andrew Morton, the author of the biography, Wallis In Love, told MailOnline that Meghan is much more selfless than Wallis.

He said: "Meghan seems to have a sense of wanting to give back, whereas Wallis only ever wanted to take".

Another key difference is that Meghan is adored by the public, whereas Wallis was not very popular.

A source told the Mirror's royal correspondent that although they aren't close, there hasn't been a big fall out.

They said: "It's obvious the two women are pretty different and while they haven't been involved in a soap opera-style falling out, they aren't exactly the best of friends".

These comments follow recent claims that Meghan and Kate fell out over Meghan's treatment of the Duchess of Cambridge's staff.

The claims, denied by the Palace, allegedly took place before Meghan and Harry's wedding in May, the source told The Sun.

They said: "Her and Kate fell out when she b*****ked Kate's staff".. Kate reportedly told the former Hollywood actress: "That's unacceptable, they're my staff and I speak to them".

The source said to the Sun: 'It's a tricky situation, but it was a one-off and they are determined to maintain a positive relationship even though they are obviously very different in their approach".

A Kensington Palace spokesperson said of the row rumour: "This never happened".. Thank you for watching! Please Like or Dislike to help me to improve the quality of the next videos

Decorating an Advent calendar| VLOGMAS DAY 1 - Duration: 21:00.

Hello all you sonsy folks and welcome to the first day of vlogmas

{Jingle bells}

I asked you guys over on Twitter what you wanted to see me do for the first vlogmas video

and the majority of you said that you would like to see me decorate

An advent calendar

so

That is what we're going to do today

I am just gonna roll my sleeves up before we get into this by the way

So that I don't get anything on this really cute doggy reindeer jumper

So I've got a bunch of stuff that I bought from Hobbycraft. Pretty much

Yeah everything's from Hobbycraft, this included.

If you're in the UK, this was 15 pounds in Hobbycraft.

They have a bunch of different ones

originally, it was gonna get the

Train set one

but they didn't have it in store when I went to buy it.

Funnily enough I was in Hobbycraft today and they had it.

They also have like light-up ones, Christmas tree ones

presents piled kind of ones

A bunch of different ones, basically.

And funny story

I actually had this advent calendar before

and I decorated it and it looked so pretty and I absolutely loved it

and then I put two candles in front of it

And at one point the candles must have tilted

And yup

I set fire to my advent calendar.

I suppose it's better than setting fire to my Christmas tree or something like that

But that one was pretty much ruined so I was really glad to see that they had the same ones in stock this year

Thank goodness. So now I can

Redo it, make it look all beautiful and keep it the hell away from candles

So the other stuff that I've got is just very basic kind of Christmasy fun stuff. I have these

paint brushes which are like a pound I think. They're in the kids section at Hobbycraft

By the way, I'm not sure if there's a Hobbycraft in the US or in other countries

I think it's just a UK thing, but I'm sure you can pick these stuff up in like

normal kind of and

erm art shops, or hobby shops, I guess.

I also have this which is the closest I could get to rose gold in paint from Hobbycraft

It is "metallic, acrylic high viscosity"

Don't quote that word have no idea if that's what it is

And it doesn't actually say but it's like a coppery kind of color

Then the reason I got this paint was because the stickers that I got for the numbers on the doors

Are these wee rose gold stickers.

I find things like stickers and stencils much easier for me when it comes to decorating stuff because

of my tremor. If you don't know about that then you can check it out in the video on my channel

I'll put in the description box below in case you want to find out more about that.

But, basically, trying to like freehand stuff

no

that does not work with me

it winds up looking

atrocious

so

Yeah, I bought two of these because when I first had this calendar and decorated it

I only bought the one and then I didn't have enough the numbers to do the double digits

and I had to go back and buy more.

So I figured- I mean definitely enough to do them in that but I figured better safe than sorry

Yup

Other stickers we have these little erm

Christmas trees. Wow forget the word for "Christmas trees" on the first day of vlogmas. That's really good work there.

Um and little stars and the trees are like different designs

Don't worry. I'll show a close-up of this.

And

Yeah, basically the plans for these is to like stick them along

like the bottom bit and stuff like that

I'm not entirely sure what my plan is for this yet. I've got a rough idea of what i want to do but

we shall see.

And then I have to use which are already open

but these are little like

Christmas trees on a little gold block thing

Just tiny wee ones

And I'm thinking about putting a couple of these in this little bit here.

That made a horrible noise. Hopefully you didn't pick that up in the camera.

And then

That is it.

That's basically all I have. Everything's just quick and simple with this because I feel like if I go over the top

then either: it will turn out awful

or

It will turn out great and I'll accidentally set it on fire again.

So we're keeping it simple.

I also have a little plate. This is just a little paper plate for putting the

paint in to.

I'm going to do the paint last which is possibly risky but

I feel like, if i do it first, I'm just gonna get paint everywhere

So

let's do this!

Just a quick disclaimer by the way guys

I am doing this straight on the table surface. If you're going to be painting and stuff

you might want to put something down

I'm not too bothered if this table gets paint on it because it's quite easy to wipe off on this table

Plus I'm planning on getting a new table next year so

not hugely fussy about that

But if you are you are in your parent's house or something like that and you feel like doing something like this

I recommend putting something down so you don't end up grounded for life

Let's just get started. So I'm gonna start with the numbers

And try and get them

as straight

as my trembling little hands with allow

oh my gosh

You know if I can ever get the thing open anyway

there we go

Toodles. I'll pick that up later.

so

I'm just gonna do them in

order. You can obviously do them

in like

any kind of order you like. I'm just gonna do like

1,2,3,4,5 blegh. I'm being dull, basically.

I'm gonna keep the top one as number- I don't know if it's number 24 or 25

{tapping}

I think it's- Oh no. There's only four on the bottom one

Oh i'm confused now

I should have done this before we started

Two seconds

There's 25!

all good

So yeah, I'm gonna do the top one. This big door

as number 25 and then start

one across to five

five across to ten so on

Um. I'm going to have to have this facing me. There's not really any other way I can do it

Actually

Let's place it down. You might be able to see that a bit better

Starting with 25. I'm just gonna

I'm just gonna go into a montage here and I'll be back in a second once I've put the numbers on.

{we wish you a merry Christmas; instrumental}

And there we have it. All numbers on the little doors

done!

So next I'm going to put these little erm

Christmas tree decorations on to certain bits. i'm not entirely sure which bits yet

I want to put some of the stars on the top one with the

25 so the trees will probably go

On this plain board bit that doesn't actually open. It's just a little bit in the middle

So yeah! Cue another montage I guess

{calendar scrapes on table}

Let's go

{we wish you a merry Christmas: instrumental}

i just went completely crazy and used all the stars

on the top part

and I'm not even sorry

Tree time

{we wish you a merry Christmas: instrumental}

And it's done

I just put three little trees on the bottom here

which I think looks really, really cute

and

fills that kind of plain white bit

It goes without saying, I think, that obviously

Decorating your own advent calendar. You can do whatever the heck you like.

You can use stencils. You can free hand

I'm using stickers, like I said, cause

tremor. Makes it easier and I didn't have number stencils that

I liked for the

the doors so

I saw these stickers and I was like

"That'll do" and I'm actually quite pleased with how they turned out

Maybe I went a bit crazy with the number 25, but

I think we can ignore that {laughs}

It's 25. It's Christmas Day. I'm allowed to be excited and cover it in stars

So now I am going to do the Christmas tree a little

The little like

wire Christmas cheese, I guess they are.

And I think I said that I'm going to put them next to the number 25

I'm just gonna try and find

some really nice pointy ones

so I'm planning on putting them

In this little bit here. Like a couple of them on each side

Possibly one in the top as well.

If I can get a nice bushy one.

That one's a bit ruined. Oh my gosh. Some of these are a bit

like yeah, they're attached to each other so

{mumbles to self}

Yup

And these don't have sticky bits on the bottom so I've got my

trusty hot glue gun charging behind me

and it's disgusting and old but

I'm just going to put some hot glue on the little wooden bit on the bottom and then place them on the

advent calendar

Oh crap that's a lot. Oh stringy glue.

Lovely. oh my gosh {chuckles}

OK that doesn't want to go away. Get off!

ew oh my god

Think it's gone. Here we go.

The glues probably dried by now

{mumbles to self}

So the first one is in and now I'm just going to do a quick montage while I do the rest.

{Jingle bells: instrumental}

Okay, so there we go. We've got the little Christmas trees on here.

I'm thinking, because I still have a couple left, that what I might actually do is put um

two on the bottom on the corners so that all the trees aren't all up the top.

And there's some down here too

But before I do that

I'm going to go in and paint the roof bit

I'm going to try and avoid the chimney and leave that white

And I'm also wanting to make sure I don't get any of the gold paint on

The rest of the advent calendar.

So I have some masking tape that I'm going to use

erm

That I inconveniently haven't put out on the table

So i'm gonna go get that and then I'll be right back and in to a

masking tape/painting montage.

{Jingle bells: instrumental}

OK so that is the paint on it.

It's probably going to need another coat of paint to be quite honest with you

so what I think I'm going to do is

leave it to dry, do another coat and then come back in the morning and

finish off with the

little Christmas trees down here

and

Then I will show you a

clip of

the finished

advent calendar

{Deck the halls: instrumental}

So good morning guys. I am back

I have done another couple of coats of the copper paint because

the one coat was definitely not enough

And I've taken the masking tape off now and

now I'm just going to do the final bit of the calendar which is to add these little Christmas trees

The same ones that are on the top just down in the bottom two corners down here.

And I have my trusty glue gun again, so

trying not to burn myself

Don't know if you can see the steam coming off that but man.

There's also

more annoying stringy bits

So one down here

And

one down here

Turning that off before I forget

And yeah

I am done

So I'm going to show you a little close-up of the calendar now. I'll just insert that.

{Deck the halls: Instrumental}

So, what do you guys think?

Am actually pleasantly surprised with how it turned out.

Considering my artistic abilities are not amazing

I expected much worse than this but

I really like it

It's definitely

one that I'll be keeping away from candles. That's for sure.

Anyway, if you guys are making your own advent calendars

then please make sure to tag me in pictures over on my social media

which will be in the description box below

Or just add me over there and come and chat and we can get excited about Christmas together.

I really need some Christmas movie recommendations so if any of you have those

pop them in the comment section below or let me know on my social media.

I hope you guys enjoyed this video. I'm back with another vlogmas video tomorrow.

And hopefully I'll see you then.

Thanks watching guys.

Bye!

It is my great honor to be speaking to you on the unbelievable Jewish channel

J-TV - a great channel, amazing channel - probably one of the greatest channels in

the history of channels that I can tell you. Let us together recount the story of

this special holiday... by the way Jared taught me this ....During the time of the

Second Temple the land of Israel was conquered and ruled by the Greeks who

everyone knew were horrible people... very bad. They robbed the Jews of their

property and set up idols in their temples.. very sad... they shouldn't have done it

... and nobody could stand up against them until one special guy and his sons rose

up and drove them from their land and that guy's name was Matisyahu -

very talented and very tough, that I can tell you - and a great guy. The Chanukah

lights serve as a reminder to the world the miraculous victory of a small band

of courageous Jews defeating the massive Greek army - an unbelievable

victory... kind of like the one I had in 2016 - and I won and won very big... and

like the Jews nobody gave them a chance. The Greeks were philosophers but also

flunkies because they accepted the Torah as a book of wisdom but not as something

holy that connects us to God. They made learning the Torah illegal and outlawed

Jewish laws like Shabbat, the Sabbath, and circumcision - what a bunch of total

losers, total idiots. The Maccabees risked their lives to keep the Torah alive and

they did an unbelievable job - beautiful job.

Greater than the miracle of defeating the Greek army was the miracle of oil

- something that we should have gotten in Afghanistan and Iraq. The horrible Greeks

made all the oil in the Temple impure and amazingly the Maccabees found one

jar one that had been overlooked - but there was only enough oil for one

day - a real problem. But their love for God was so great that they lit it anyway

and God gave them another unbelievable miracle - the oil burned for eight days

can you believe that? Eight days. Everybody could see the Divine Presence

dwelt within the Jews. With tremendous joy the Jews cleansed the temple and

began to serve God once again. Nowadays we have to remember our great history and

draw on that joy. That's why we make Hanukkah parties with dreidels and

latkes because joy has the power to overcome anything negative and break any

evil decree - and we all know there's lots of evil people in the world - just look at

crooked Hillary - horrible person, total train wreck. The light of the Hanukkah

candles is holy, like the light of the menorah in the temple and like the

lights on my Trump Tower - which by the way are beautiful. We are careful not to

use it for any other purpose because our mitzvah is just to look at the

candles and listen to the story that they tell - and Jared told me the whole

thing so I know about it. The miracle of Hanukkah occurred in a very, very dark

time - like now with the fake news - when there were wicked decrees against the

Jews. But the Maccabees, like me, had the courage and never lost hope - their

self-sacrifice turned their darkness into light. Today too our self-sacrifice

will light up the world. I am President Donald Trump and you are watching J-TV

Happy Hanukkah.

Who decides what's a "real" word? | Riley J. Dennis - Duration: 5:11.

Who decides what words are actually words?

Because you've probably at some point said a word and had someone say back to you, "That's

not a *real* word."

That might've been because you're a kid, and you're using some slang word that your

parents don't know.

Or it might be because you're in certain niche circles and using a relatively new word

that people outside those circles haven't heard very much.

Or it could've just been a dialectical difference because the person you're talking to is

from a different region and speaks a different form of English.

Whatever the reason, most of us have experienced this.

And it's hard to have a comeback for the accusation that your word isn't "real"

because how do you prove that it is?

You use the word, other people understand the word, doesn't that make it real?

Does it really need a stamp of approval from some higher power for it to be "real"?

Well, for a lot of people, they turn to dictionaries to know what real words are.

If you've been through middle school or high school, I'd bet that at some point

you started a really bad essay with a dictionary definition.

I did it too, don't worry, we all had to start somewhere.

But we do that not only to fluff out our essays to reach an arbitrary word count, but also

because we see dictionaries as authoritative tools that can help give us some order in

a language that is extremely chaotic.

I mean, there are so many words in English, and more are coming into existence every day.

Plus the words we do have are constantly changing.

I mean, have you ever tried to read Shakespeare?

That's English from only a few hundred years ago, and for many of us, it's really difficult

if not impossible to read.

And that's only Early Modern English.

Before that, Old English and Middle English were even less like our modern form of English.

And hundreds or thousands of years from now, English will have evolved so much that we

would probably struggle to understand it, if we could at all.

So we're given this thing, language, that is massive and constantly changing, and we're

told to use it as our sole method of communicating with people.

That's scary.

And it makes sense that we reach out for some structure.

It can help us feel in control to say, "These are real words that I understand and am comfortable

with, and these are not."

For a lot of people, change is scary.

Things they don't understand are scary.

Especially when that thing is the tool they rely on everyday to communicate.

But the problem with our search for structure and authority in language is that -- it doesn't really exist.

There's no Head of English who decides what is and isn't a word.

Even dictionaries don't decide what English is, they merely record it as they see it.

All of the big major dictionaries today are descriptive, not prescriptive.

That means that simply see how language is being used in the world, and they write it down.

They don't dictate what we can or can't say, which would be prescriptive.

They don't prescribe language; they just describe it.

And that's a good thing.

I don't think you want some all-powerful person or group telling you what you can or

can't say, right?

"Oh, so that means I can say all the slurs I want?"

I mean, you technically *can*, but I would advise you not to.

They're slurs for a reason.

They're mean and hurtful -- and anyway, I'm getting sidetracked.

The truth is, dictionaries don't decide what language is, they just do their best

to document it.

And sometimes they're a little slow to catch up as they ensure that a word is widespread

in its usage and has a clear definition.

So if you're looking to dictionaries to verify what is a "real" word, the only

thing you're really verifying is if a dictionary has yet become aware of its existence and

decided to document it.

Dictionaries add new words constantly, and words usually have to be in usage for a while

before they get added to the dictionary.

So for all that time before they get added, they're still "real".

I mean really, any word that is spoken is "real" in that it now exists.

But I think what we really mean by "real" isn't necessarily "does it exist?" but

it's more "is it understood by other people?"

And if that's the case, the only thing that makes a word real is if its in use.

If we stopped documenting language entirely, we would still understand each others' words

-- and those understandings would be based simply on what people are using.

If a word was widely in use a few hundred years ago but has fallen out of usage today

to the point that nobody understands it, then it wouldn't be a "real" word in that sense.

But a brand new word that was just invented last month could be "real" if enough people

understand it.

Most new words start off in one smaller community and then spread to the rest of us.

And at some point, every single word we use today was "made-up".

None of these words occur in nature, they're all artificial, they've just become "real"

by the repeated use of them over the years.

There are a bunch of really common words today that someone from the 60s or 70s wouldn't

understand at all, like "smartphone" for example.

But I don't think anyone is arguing now that "smartphone" isn't a real word.

Because every word isn't considered "real" until it is.

For years, people have been arguing over whether "Latinx", the gender-neutral alternative

to Latino or Latina, is a real word.

It's first known usage in English is from eleven years ago in 2007, but just a couple

months ago in September, it was added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

It's now used by and understood by tons and tons of people.

So it is, without a doubt, real, and it was real before it was added to the dictionary.

It's just a more recent addition to what we think of as "real" words.

So if there are any words that you're seeing around a lot that you don't think are real,

chances are that they're already real words, even if you're only hearing them for the

first time.

Language is changing constantly, and if you can't accept that, it's just going to

leave you behind.

Anyway, that's all I had for you today.
