Oscar De La Hoya was the biggest pay-per-view star during his time as a professional boxer
with his career running from 1992 to 2008.
The Mexican-American athlete wrapped up his career with a 39-6 record and he had 30 knockouts
under his belt.
In 2014, De La Hoya was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, but despite
his outstanding accomplishments, his knockout loss to Manny Pacquiao back in 2008 would
send him into retirement shortly after.
Now, De La Hoya is apparently more than ready to bounce back into the ring, and he's calling
on Conor McGregor to face him in his comeback fight.
De La Hoya was a featured guest on the three-hour daily digital radio show, "Golden Boy Radio
with Tattoo and the Crew", and this is what he had to say:
"You know I'm competitive.
I still have it in me.
I've been secretly training, secretly training.
I'm faster than ever and stronger than ever.
I know I can take out Conor McGregor in two rounds.
I'll come back for that fight.
Two rounds.
Just one more [fight].
I'm calling him out.
Two rounds, that's all I need.
That's all I'm going to say."
Obviously boxers really want to take a stab at McGregor.
De La Hoya's fantasy fight comes on the heels of Floyd Mayweather coming out of a
two-year retirement to take on Conor McGregor, where the mixed martial arts fighter lost
in a 10th-round knockout on August 26th in Las Vegas.
Ironically, when the Mayweather-McGregor fight was in the works, De La Hoya, now CEO of Golden
Boy Promotions, penned an open letter to boxing fans calling the matchup a "circus" and
that if the fight actually went down the "sport might not ever recover."
De La Hoya went further to belittle the fight saying that it would be nothing more than
a money grab, which obviously would be the same thing if both he and McGregor stepped
into the ring to challenge one another.
Conor McGregor is still currently under contract with the UFC, and even though he took an "L"
from Mayweather, he said he would still weigh his options to fight both in the boxing ring
and the Octagon.
De La Hoya said that if McGregor does end up accepting his offer it could only go down
in the ring:
"Let's get it straight: In the cage, he would freaking destroy me.
He would freaking destroy me.
Only in the ring.
I've been working out for the last five months.
[My confidence] is how I feel now from my training.
I don't know what it is, but I'll tell you now that I've never felt so good before in
my life."
De La Hoya is currently facing charges due to a DUI arrest earlier this year, but despite
minor setbacks, the 44-year-old says he's back to fighting shape.
"Every day just keeps getting better.
Life is good.
Life is a struggle; life is hard.
It's not all peaches and cream, but life is life and you have to think about the solution
of what you have to do to keep walking."
De La Hoya talking about coming out of retirement is nothing new.
Back in June 2015, the former boxer spoke with ESPN during the time he wanted to take
on either Goloykin or have a rematch with Mayweather:
"It's got to be worth my while, but this is very serious.
I have to make sure I am fighting the very best.
I don't have to come back for financial reasons or the lights or the glamour.
The only reason I would come back is because I miss the competition of fighting the very
best."
Soon after that statement, De La Hoya said he would stay retired, so it's going to
be very interesting to see if his request to fight McGregor is all talk, or if he's
really up for the challenge.
