What's a smartphone made of? - Kim Preshoff - Duration: 4:56.
As of 2018, there are around 2.5 billion smartphone users in the world.
If we broke open all their newest phones,
which are just a fraction of the total that've been built,
and split them into their component parts,
that would produce around 85,000 kilograms of gold,
875,000 of silver,
and 40 million kilograms of copper.
How did this precious cache get into our phones,
and can we reclaim it?
Gold, silver, and copper are actually just a few
of the 70 or so chemical elements that make up the average smartphone.
These can be divided into different groups,
two of the most critical being rare earth elements
and precious metals.
Rare earths are a selection of 17 elements that are actually common in Earth's crust
and are found in many areas across the world in low concentrations.
These elements have a huge range of magnetic,
phosphorescent,
and conductive properties
that make them crucial to modern technologies.
In fact, of the 17 types of rare earth metals,
phones and other electronics may contain up to 16.
In smartphones, these create the screen and color display,
aid conductivity,
and produce the signature vibrations,
amongst other things.
And yet, crucial as they are,
extracting these elements from the earth
is linked to some disturbing environmental impacts.
Rare earth elements can often be found,
but in many areas,
it's not economically feasible to extract them due to low concentrations.
Much of the time,
extracting them requires a method called open pit mining
that exposes vast areas of land.
This form of mining destroys huge swaths of natural habitats,
and causes air and water pollution,
threatening the health of nearby communities.
Another group of ingredients in smartphones
comes with similar environmental risks:
these are metals such as copper,
silver,
palladium,
aluminum,
platinum,
tungsten,
tin,
lead,
and gold.
We also mine magnesium,
lithium,
silica,
and potassium to make phones,
and all of it is associated with vast habitat destruction,
as well as air and water pollution.
Mining comes with worrying social problems, too,
like large-scale human and animal displacement
to make way for industrial operations,
and frequently, poor working conditions for laborers.
Lastly, phone production also requires petroleum,
one of the main drivers of climate change.
That entwines our smartphones inextricably with this growing planetary conundrum.
And, what's more,
the ingredients we mine to make our phones aren't infinite.
One day, they'll simply run out,
and we haven't yet discovered effective replacements for some.
Despite this,
the number of smartphones is on a steady increase;
by 2019 it's predicted that there'll be close to 3 billion in use.
This means that reclaiming the bounty within our phones
is swiftly becoming a necessity.
So, if you have an old phone,
you might want to consider your options before throwing it away.
To minimize waste, you could donate it to a charity for reuse,
take it to an e-waste recycling facility,
or look for a company that refurbishes old models.
However, even recycling companies need our scrutiny.
Just as the production of smartphones
comes with social and environmental problems,
dismantling them does too.
E-waste is sometimes intentionally exported to countries
where labor is cheap but working conditions are poor.
Vast workforces, often made up of women and children,
may be underpaid,
lack the training to safely disassemble phones,
and be exposed to elements like lead and mercury,
which can permanently damage their nervous systems.
Phone waste can also end up in huge dump sites,
leaching toxic chemicals into the soil and water,
mirroring the problems of the mines where the elements originated.
A phone is much more than it appears to be on the surface.
It's an assemblage of elements from multiple countries,
linked to impacts that are unfolding on a global scale.
So, until someone invents a completely sustainable smartphone,
we'll need to come to terms
with how this technology affects widespread places and people.

I'm your host TheReportOfTheWeek.
So welcome to another food review. Happy October!
Let's hope this will be a wonderful month for all of us! And to start off
the new month is a review for an item that's been out for a couple months already, but forget about that, right?
McDonald's is everywhere!
Today's review is for the
bacon smokehouse
chicken well actually, it's, it's an artisan chicken. It's the bacon smokehouse
Let me just find the name of this thing.
The Bacon Smokehouse
Buttermilk
Crispy Chicken Sandwich. What a name I tell you.
Oh gosh, alright, what does it have on? Because we have the title, you know what it is, comes with applewood smoked bacon,
bacon onion sauce,
real white cheddar cheese,
also comes with a sweet mustard and
onion strings. I wrote them down
on a piece of paper so I can
keep track of them, but it's certainly a sandwich that has quite a lot.
You might say, you know that name sounds somewhat familiar. Did you review
anything of similar nature
perhaps
days of
old?
And the honest answer to that is yes indeed. I have indeed. I actually reviewed the burger version of it.
Of course, it's an artisan sandwich.
So, you know they try to, they try to just make it a little bit more fancy. They try to,
you know, have the presentation make it more restaurant-esque. You know, you want your Big Macs and all that. That's fine, too!
But if you want to kick it up a notch,
so to speak, you want to get what some would deem to be a higher quality product
that's where this artisan line of sandwiches comes from. And
of course they are available in three variants:
burger form,
also available in
buttermilk crispy chicken form, and then in grilled chicken form.
So, you know, I figure I may as well give the chicken one a try. I've been craving
McDonald's lately, I didn't really have a problem with the burger one
so I thought well sometimes changing it to chicken can do it a lot of good or a lot of bad and

Okay, here is my sandwich you can see right now we have a bit of a mustard,
mustard, I don't want to call it a landslide but...
mustard avalanche I suppose? Or is it is it the sweet mustard?
That's a sweet mustard
avalanche. So, my apologies. I want to make sure I get the vernacular as on point as can be.
And we also seem to have
you know, some drippings, but it's contained but here's what the sandwich looks like. It actually does look as advertised.
You know, this is what it looks like. This is what they this is what they show on the website.
You can certainly see.
Gosh, I don't know why my memory's bad today.
I'm just gonna take this piece of paper and I'm just gonna put it up right here, so I'm forced to look at this silly thing.

Ugh so yeah, so these are...okay. There's the bacon onion sauce
right here.
That's the sweet mustard on the top in between that is the real, and they had to call it "real" white cheddar cheese.
Onion strings and bacon are kind of up there. I'll de-bun it in a second. Then you can see the chicken patty.
So.

Then,
proceeding downward, is
kind of everything else right? You can see there's that chicken patty.
The
bacon onion sauce.
Bacon on the top, the real the real cheese, and then the chicken. All right. Well, we know what's on it.
Sorry that my memories kind of giving out on me today. But I
tell you my
one complaint just is that this sandwich is such a mouthful of words in regards to its actual name,
let alone the ingredients. So...
That's my only complaint so far, but you know what?
Forget about all that! As long as it tastes good, it doesn't matter what they call it! You know? They can,
They can make a 500-word long name
And if it's really good, a committed few will get it. But, most people will say it's still too long! Onto the review...
Let's try this thing out!
I'll let you know what it tastes like. So it's the chicken variant of this - The Bacon Smokehouse Buttermilk
Crispy Chicken Sandwich. I gotta just write that on the board a hundred times to remember the name. Going in!
Want to hear the most dramatic thing you've ever heard in your life? Get ready! So...
It's Monday morning, the first of October.
Your stomach is growling and grumbling! And...
there is this
insatiable hunger
that is just it cannot be satisfied! You're trying everything: doughnuts,
pancakes.
Let's not even talked about the pizza!
But then you see it on the horizon -
a glimmer of hope,
a beacon of light,
the golden arches from McDonald's!!
You know right then and there this is where I need to be.
And...You go there. You're crawling in on your hands and knees!
And you look at the menu board. And...
You're looking at what they have.
And you say,
(Because I forgot the name already!), "I want to get the artisan
chicken sandwich
smokehouse one!"
They serve it up, it's hot it's fresh.
This is gonna be it!
You bite in.
The chicken is on point - tastes good. It's juicy!
It has that thickness to it. There's substance.
It's not overcooked. It's not overly crispy, but it has a nice crunch to it -
delicious!
You made it over the first hurdle.
Now come the toppings:
Applewood smoked bacon, a couple pieces on there. I could definitely taste that bacon!
Awesome!
That white cheddar cheese blends in great with the chicken. And I can tell you that that is, indeed,
Real! (as they said on the website)
None of that fake white cheddar cheese.
But is this still gonna cure your hunger? You keep devouring the sandwich. Onion strings dead ahead!
They're crunchy. They're flavorful. Blends together good. No problems. Then the bacon onion sauce comes.
Not a single issue with that either - has this just nice honey barbecue-esque flavor.
It just blends everything together. It's a delicious sandwich. You can't stop yourself!
And then you hit a wall!
Sweet mustard!!
You had such high hopes.
You thought this was gonna be the one thing that
cures your Monday morning hunger!
And as you ate this sandwich,
one ingredient after the next, after the next, after the next,
seemed to prove
and validate that point.
And right now you're sitting there in disbelief.
Tears are streaming down your face and you don't know what to do next with your day and with your life!!
Because you put all your hope, all your faith, in this sandwich!
And it rose your spirits so high that you thought was gonna be the one!
This is going to be the sandwich that finally does it: The Perfect Sandwich - that has that blend of both the,
just the flavor of the chicken, the bacon,
and heck even the onion!
The bacon onion sauce - that sweetness - so delicious, so wonderful!
And it's just crashing down in flames and it is just crashing and burning
because of the sweet mustard sauce!! That cancels out everything and doesn't belong there!
AND that's the review really!
I told you it's gonna be the most dramatic thing you've ever heard. The sandwich is great. You saw me,
I probably took more bites from this one than normal.
And it's a great sandwich just completely goes in line with my viewers for the burger as well.
But the one thing, it's a wonderful sandwich,
tastes great.
My recommendation: Get it without the sweet mustard because that tanginess that the mustard has is so off-putting.
It just doesn't...
There's there's no rationale as to why it's there.
It's all that I can tell you. The price for the sandwich is it's about five dollars.
The rating for this sandwich, therefore, is going to be a 7.2 out of 10.
It's a great sandwich. If it didn't have that sweet mustard, I would have given this probably a 9.7.
Get it without the sweet mustard. You will be very pleased with that decision
because it's an excellent sandwich. Otherwise, I highly recommend you get it,
but without the sweet mustard! The same goes through the burger variant.
The chicken variant is wonderful.
But please hold the sweet mustard, my recommendation, if you want to have a most pleasant eating experience!

ever last night at Wembley Arena.
Oli, El Fakidor and myself had a great time at the event, and then we went out for drinks
with some members of the Swafnation!
I probably had one too many, missed my last tube home, and then somehow had to get a taxi
from Bond Street which cost me sixty bloody quid.
Sixty.
Bloody.
Quid.
Still, that Walter vs. Tyler Bate match was incredible!
Maybe what I need to feel better is an unnecessarily long WWE show.
No, wait that's not right at all.
Headline: WWE Super Show Down Will Be Long
WWE Super Show Down is coming this Saturday from Melbourne, Australia with a stacked card
that includes AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe, The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan, Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte
Flair, The Bellas & Ronda Rousey vs. The Riott Squad - and a supposed "last time ever"
encounter between Triple H and The Undertaker.
And Wrestling Inc have noted that the released schedule for the WWE Network this week has
revealed Super Show Down will be five hours long.
Using the tried and tested method of measuring time, that's the same runtime as two and
a bit Star Wars films.
Not only that but the Network schedule doesn't list a pre-show for Super Show Down, which
means both New Day and the Cruiserweight Championship match will be on the main show for a change.
Headline: WWE Tease Rumoured Crown Jewel Match?
Perhaps the biggest match on the Super Show Down card is that apparently final time ever
battle between Triple H and The Undertaker.
However, there may be a caveat to that "last time ever" tag line in that it's the last
ever singles match between the two.
It was reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer that WWE were working on getting
Shawn Michaels out of his 2010 retirement for a tag team match between DX and The Brothers
of Destruction at WWE Crown Jewel in Riyadh next month.
WrestleVotes have also reported this, and added last week that Michaels and Taker could
have another match at either Survivor Series in November or at the Royal Rumble in January.
This rumour gained some ground when Undertaker announced on Raw that HBK will be in Triple
H's corner, while Mayor Glenn Jacobs will be in his - sparking speculation that an angle
will take place to set up the tag match in Saudi Arabia.
And now WWE themselves are starting to tease this tag team match themselves - posting a
picture of the two teams on Instagram asking "who would win this fantasy warfare?"
Headline: Batista WWE Return Revealed
Maybe the Crown Prince also wanted a WWE return for Batista - as he's finally coming back
to Smackdown Live for Smackdown 1000 later this month.
Like Raw 25 earlier this year, Smackdown 1000 will be a celebration of the show's history
- with WWE announcing that Undertaker will return to the blue brand for the first time
since Smackdown's 900th episode, there's rumours that former World Heavyweight Champion
Edge will also be on the show, and there will likely be other surprises to mark 1000 episodes
of Smackdown Live.
And now WWE have confirmed Raw exclusive stable Evolution will be on the show… wait what?
WWE's Twitter account announced that Evolution will be getting back together for one night
at Smackdown 1000 - making it the first time ever the group have been on the show.
But more importantly it sees the WWE return of Batista - who was last seen in the company
back in 2014 during Evolution's feud with The Shield.
Batista has been very open about a possible WWE return, confirming Dave Meltzer's report
on a radio show back in April that he was talking with the company about teaming with
Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania.
He added in that interview that he wanted to do it, but only if they teased a singles
match between Batista and Triple H for Mania next year.
According to Batista, however, WWE "just stopped talking" to him about the match
- which eventually saw Kurt Angle team with Rousey to take on The Authority [24].
Batista also said on Twitter in response to a fan asking if he'll be at the show, "Surprise
surprise!!
I wasn't invited!
And it's in my hometown.!
😳.. guess by now I shouldn't be shocked anymore."
However Rajah are reporting that this was done "just to throw off fans", which could
also be the case for Edge who said he won't be at Smackdown 1000 either.
