It took almost 15 years of planning,
but late 2015,
the construction of a new bridge for walking and cycling...
finally started in Utrecht.
The bridge will take you over railroad tracks, a tram track,
two roads and two bus stations.
Construction started with cranes placing the bridge's legs.
These V-shaped legs...
were placed strategically...
on the station's platforms.
The bridge deck parts were shipped to this location
and huge cranes placed them on the legs.
Most of that work was done in the night
to disturb train traffic as little as possible.
That meant that on any given morning,
the bridge could be much longer...
than the day before.
Special about this bridge, is the fact...
that trees stand on it.
These trees were specifically grown...
for this bridge in shallow boxes.
That means they can survive and thrive on the bridge.
On the first half of the bridge,
the trees were placed when the bridge was already at its final location.
On that half, the trees were already in place and in leaves...
in the summer of 2016.
Not interfering with traffic,
glass panels were placed in the bridge's railings...
during the day.
The second half of the bridge still had to be finished.
Train traffic was stopped for that on some weekends
in the second half of 2016.
The trees on those final bridge decks were already planted...
before they were in their final location.
With these deck parts placed in late October,
the bridge could be finished quickly.
And it was opened on the 16th of December 2016.
