Song: Synesthesia Ghost

Translations: Psychiet

My eyes spinned on the right and wrong, lining up at equal intervals

Expressed emotions that I've learned through synesthesia like a string figure, they spin round and round

so that mistakes can be erased and smashed

Secretly, quietly sink those "expressions of love" deep down inside you always

As if crying, as if laughing, I make my attitude apparent, with strings of words

Doesn't it fit right? It'd be nice if it did.

[Sakoonthai] when YOU enjoy authentic THAI flavors in a CUTE little cafe - Duration: 11:10.

Wow look at that with all the shrimp and rice noodles, fresh out of the wok!

Thank you so much!

You're welcome!

Yay!

Sa-wa-dee-ka!

This time, Sakoonthai, time for some Thai food!

Let's meet chef Vith here, he's the master behind Sakoonthai restaurant,

authentic Thai food.

He came from Thailand.

Is that right?

How long have you been in the U.S.?

I came here

19...

87

1987?

Yup.

Oh my gosh!

Before I was born!

We're so excited to check out how Pad Thai is made!

The shrimp Pad Thai right here, fresh out of the wok, and it smells so good.

I can't wait to just dig in!

Let's go!

Woo look at this, chewy rice noodles.

The rice noodle is super spongy.

I love how it's a little bit sour, but not too salty.

I need to mix it actually, some peanuts too.

Some peanut crusts.

Mmm I love the peanuts that just added crunchiness to this dish.

And of course, the shrimp right here.

It's so perfectly grilled.

Mmm let me mix in some beansprouts too.

It's interesting because they actually, when they were cooking it, they cooked in

together with some beansprouts,

but then they also serve you with some raw beansprouts on the side.

Mmm look at this.

I like that the beansprouts really added some freshness

and crispness because normally this

is just smooth, chewy, everything is cooked, but then the side of peanuts and the side

of raw beansprouts really added extra texture to this dish.

Crunchiness, some fresh and crispness from the beansprouts.

This is awesome, guys!

Make sure you try this Pad Thai out when you come to Sakoonthai!

As soon as we sat down, Chatchai brought us one iced tea and one iced coffee.

I really have to point out that their iced tea is made from a Thai tea leaf.

And you can't find it in any other coffee shops locally.

So let me take my first sip.

Mmm ooh super milky.

Obviously there's milk mixed into it.

And you don't really find a lot of iced tea or just

general tea that's so in orange color.

It's pretty sweet, but it is different.

Like I don't really taste other tea out there that has a similar flavor to this.

Pretty special!

The second dish we got here is the Prik Gleur.

Prik Gleur is basically any kind of meat of your choice,

and then battered,

and then deep-fried,

and then they stir fry with hot chili pepper and chef's special garlic sauce.

We got the pork version here.

So it's the pork Prik Gleur that we got here.

And look at the presentation.

It looks so pretty

with the green onions, big lettuce leaf on the bottom.

Mmm.

The outside is really crispy.

Inside is chewy.

Ooh spicy, yeah!

A little bit, not so much.

A little bit spicier than mild.

Maybe because it has this green chili pepper too.

Oh and this dish comes with a side of rice too.

How cute is that rice bowl.

Let me try it with a little bit of their side onions and red bell pepper.

Mmm.

I love the combination of the texture that we have here.

There's crispiness, there's chewy.

Just all kinds of flavors mixed together.

A bit spicy, a bit salty, a bit sweet.

This makes a perfect meal, guys!

Mmm let me take my first sip of the iced milk coffee.

Mmm.

It's pretty sweet.

It tastes almost a little bit like Vietnamese coffee,

but Vietnamese coffee is a lot darker

and it's more bitter.

This one is more on the sweeter and milkier side.

Yeah pretty good!

I really have to point out, look at how cute their pitchers are!

The third dish we got here, which is one of the most popularly ordered dishes, it is the

drunken noodles with chicken.

And how different it is, this noodle,

from their Pad Thai, is that this is really big

fat wide rice noodles.

We got the chicken here, so you can also pick another kind of meat.

Or if you're a vegetarian, you can choose tofu or just veggies on the side.

So let me take my first bite.

Mmm.

It's

spicy.

I don't know if it was because of the noodle I got that was laying right to a green chili

pepper, but this is hot!

But it's very flavorful.

Salty, like soy sauce kind of saltiness.

Different from Pad Thai where it's a bit sour, like vinegary.

This is more on the salty side.

And it's definitely spicier than the pork Prik Gleur.

I'll try a little bite of their chicken.

Nice and tender.

Let me take another bite of their drunken noodles.

Actually what an interesting name, right?

And the noodle is so wide and so fat, and so spongy, look at this!

Mmm.

I don't know if it's the sauce, I think it's some kind of herb that they use in

their cooking, in their seasoning.

It's good though.

And I love how they garnish it with caramelized tomatoes,

green peppers,

red bell peppers,

carrots.

Very sweet.

Bell pepper is very sweet.

Mmm.

Let's meet one of the owners of Sakoonthai, Chatchai right here.

The other owner is actually Andrew, but unfortunately he cannot be here today.

So I saw on the internet that there was a different restaurant before Sakoonthai existence.

So can you tell us a little bit about the background of how all this came together and

what happened in the transition?

I started working in Sakoontra as a delivery guy.

Ohh.

Yeah and after that, we got some customers around this area.

The owner said they were gonna shut down their business.

Oh.

That's why I think that

our customers are still here, still need Thai food from Sakoontra.

Right.

That's why we were thinking to open the new location.

Oh so the employees are also the same as from Sakoontra?

They came here too?

Oh wow.

The chef too?

Yes.

The two chefs.

When did Sakoontra open and when did Sakoonthai open?

Sakoontra, they opened, I guess it's 2000.

We opened here, June 20, 2015.

June of 2015?

Yeah.

Ok.

How does Sakoonthai stand out from other Thai restaurants around here?

First thing is we came from Sakoontra.

We saw the kids, they grew up, they married, and they still come back.

They bring their kids here.

Yeah.

They bring their kids here, and tell them you know.

This is what dad and mom ate here before.

Yeah.

That's why we want to keep everything like a loyal family.

From generation to generation, they still keep coming back.

Exactly, you know.

The second thing is the taste of the food.

Yeah that's why that's our top priority, of the food quality.

The food quality and the taste.

Yeah.

And you can see the decoration.

Yeah we want balance of the American and Thai.

American style, but the Thai food.

To make it come together.

Ohh gotcha.

Sort of like a fusion from the traditional Thai food with like the Americanized decoration.

Exactly.

So it's not too foreign to Americans to come here to eat.

Yes.

Thank you so much for your time today.

Thank you so much.

Thank you for the amazing food.

Yeah no problem.

When I talked to Chatchai earlier, he mentioned to me about the design of this restaurant.

So the designer meant to represent four parts of a house in this restaurant.

So it's actually divided into four sections.

So behind me is basically the living room where you see the big bookshelf.

And then the area that we're sitting, you can see this couch, the design is sort of

like your bedroom, like your bedroom headboard.

And then where the grass is, represents the deck.

And then the other corner, it represents the dinning area.

So it just makes you feel very comfortable.

It's like you're eating at home.

Look at their menu right now.

It's so cutely designed.

Just like their store right here.

Thank you so much!

What is this?

Green tea sauce?

Yes it's green tea sauce.

OK.

Pour all over.

And then the bottom is the roti bread?

Yes.

OK got it.

OK thank you so much!

Just look at the presentation right here.

Oh am I covered with smoke?

I just don't know where to start right now.

It's so pretty looking.

Let me just dig in to my first green tea ice cream bite.

Ooh look at this.

Mmm.

Another bite of their green tea ice cream.

This thing you have to eat it really quickly because the bottom plate is so hot that it

just sort of melts everything down.

So you need to eat this pretty quickly!

Mmm let me dig in to this roti bread in the bottom.

I guess this is the highlight of this.

Look at this right here.

Mmm.

I love this roti bread.

It's super fluffy, and airy, and chewy.

It's a little bit salty and then the berry just added some citrus-ness to this bread.

Oh my gosh this is so interesting!

Mmm.

Wow.

This is just so fun to eat!

We had so much fun eating here at Sakoonthai.

Really big shout out to chef Vith.

Too bad we didn't have enough time to talk with him today because he was so busy cooking.

But we really want to thank him for showing us how to make Pad Thai today.

Not only does your tongue can enjoy their authentic and delicious Thai food, your eyes

can also be satisfied with their cute decorations on the wall and just their environment.

Also, look at this cute little table out in front of the restaurant.

I think when the weather is nice, people would eat outside.

So you guys out there, if you're in the Clifton, VA area, make sure you check this

place out.

This is only about a mile away from Centreville.

So yeah why not check this place out if you're in the area!

3 KEY Tips for Fat Loss and Muscle Gain - Duration: 11:40.

I got three tips for fat loss and muscle gain I want everybody to be able to use.

These these are some of the biggest mistakes I see, and they need to be

corrected. It can not only help you, you can use it yourself, with your client,s with

your athletes! I break it all down, it's gonna be super simple anybody can do

this and everybody SHOULD be doing this, so let's jump right in! I'm David Barr

[CSCS, CISSN, TSAC-F, NSCACPT, RSCC] and if you're looking to get bigger faster stronger, get leaner, go longer,

hit that Subscribe, and then the little bell so you don't miss the latest

updates. And I'm going to 1-UP it for this video, because if you think that

objective evidence is a better way of establishing beliefs than subjective

feelings, or special feelings, then you can help advance the conversation by sharing

the info in this video. A quick shout out to Dr. Todd Miller [PhD, CSCS, TSAC-F] who runs the metabolic

lab at GW University. I watched a great talk of his at one of the recent NSCA

Personal Trainers conferences and it was fantastic. It inspired me to do this

video, so I think this is really going to help, and we'll look at things in a

slightly different way. If you want specific videos for muscle growth tips I'll link

to that inthe top once I do those, I'll also do one for fat loss tips.

Once again I'll link to that up above, and in the Description, so be sure to

check for those in the near future. TIP NUMBER ONE: focus on strength training.

Probably the biggest, most fundamental mistake I see people make, is waay too

much focus on cardio. I don't know where this came from, but I have an idea and it

comes back to the idea, the mythology, behind fasted cardio. This idea that

we're going to be burning more fat during exercise, and that's going to be

stripped from our adipose tissue -that fat from under our skin, like our love

handles- that we want to get rid of. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way,

and there's two main reasons for this. ONE is that the fat actually comes from

both of our muscle AND adipose tissue. We actually store fat in our muscle. If

you've ever seen a steak, or you've ever seen tuna or salmon, you see the fat -the

marbling in that meat. That is muscle! We store fat there, and it's great for

liberation during exercise, so that's where a lot of our fat storage is going

to come from when we're talking about burning fat during exercise, okay? It's not

necessarily all our love handles. Now the second part is that you really can't

have a high intensity workout and when you are consuming zero food. When you

are fasting, right? So we'll get to that in a bit, but keep that one in mind

because that's an important one. And the other key to this is going to be that

the fat that we're burning, okay great we have this transient short-lived fat

burning during the fasted cardio workout. But who cares?

It's not what we're after. We're not after an hour's worth of fat burning, right?

We want 24-hour fat burning, and this is why we need to focus more on strength

training. We need to increase the muscle mass -I'm not talking about getting

"jacked and swole" per se. Women don't have to worry about gaining too much muscle.

It's one of those things that we can work around, you're not going to get too

big. But we want to focus on preserving that lean muscle mass. That's our engine

that's going to burn our fat and it's going to do it 24 hours a day.

Our biggest calorie sink is our muscle tissue but it's also going to burn fat

the longest and it's called RMR, Resting Metabolic Rate, and what we [undertake a calorie-restricted] diet

our body starts to shut down to preserve calories for survival, our RMR starts to

drop. Lean muscle mass is going to help keep

that elevated. How do we keep that? Well, in part, by focusing on strength training.

Now if you're working with clients who are concerned about getting "too big",

"putting on too much muscle", there's ways around that. You can convince them that

they're just not going to get too big like it's NOT going to happen. I'm sure

most of you watching this know that, but it's a really simple hurdle to get over.

Now as far as strength training, it can actually boost RMR for up to 36 hours

after a training bout, okay? So we're not even talking a boost of 24 hours -24 hour

fat burning or calorie burning, right? We're talking about 36 hours! And there's

another key in there: the focus is NOT on short-term fat loss, it's on overall

caloric expenditure. How much are we burning, compared to how much are we

bringing in, okay? So with fasted cardio you're not burning very much at all. "Great"

you're burning a little bit, but who cares, because it's a short period of

time, and a lot of it comes from muscle. So if you love fasted cardio, then by all means

keep doing it, it's not really harmful, it's just one of those things it's not

really going to make a big difference. Again, the focus should be on strength

training. Preserve that lean muscle mass that your body's going to want to start

breaking down. Keep in mind, muscle doesn't just take a lot of energy to

build and preserve, it takes a lot of energy just sitting there. It's a very

metabolically active tissue, okay? We want that! But the rest of our cells don't want

that for [the sake of] survival. The cells want to preserve calories, so they shut down

metabolic rate (RMR), in part by losing lean muscle mass, and we want to fight against

that if we're trying to build muscle and lose fat. LAST

point on this, if you're working with somebody new, and they're new to strength

training, and they want to build muscle, lose fat, the strength gain can be very very

motivating, especially during those first eight weeks when the strength gains are

pretty incredible. That can be very very motivating to prospective clients

especially if they've never done this before, especially if they're trying to

lose weight, at the same time trying to lose body fat, this is the perfect way to

keep them motivated, keep them going. Tip number two: you're going to be dropping

calories, no question, but you have to INCREASE relative protein intake. A lot

of people may be afraid of this, they still fear that protein get hurt their

kidneys, I mean I had somebody called me out during a talk, asking me why I'm

"recommending protein intakes that are harmful to kidneys", like this is not the

1960's, we know that for healthy people higher protein intakes are not harmful,

in fact they're great for helping to preserve

lean body mass. Remember, our body's going to want to be breaking down that tissue

and we're going to be dropping calories, so we're only exacerbating that process

so if we're dropping calories from fats and carbs, we need to increase relative

protein intake, and this could be about 1 to 1.4 grams per pound of Lean Body Mass,

okay? Not TOTAL body mass. It's one of those things, you can figure out your

body fat percentage, to figure out your lean body mass, and then do the

calculation, 1 to 1.4, and that's your grams of protein per day. Now for a lot of

people, this is going to be increasing protein intake, taking in more calories

from protein, so don't forget that you have to drop your fat and your

carb calories, to a slightly greater degree. This is part of a semi novel

concept in nutrition, even RD's are getting on board, this and that's an

ACCEPTABLE Macronutrient Distribution Range, or AMDR. It's a relatively new concept but

means that we're not just going to lock in to a specific percent of a macro,

we're going to have it flexible, we're going to adjust that based on the needs

of the client or the athlete. So in this case that means increasing protein

intake when needed, and dropping it back when we don't need as much. TIP number

three: big mistake I see people make FUEL your workout! [The mistake lies in trying to perform when under-fueled] So if you're

you're dropping carbs to try to lose body fat, that's fine, you might even like it,

that's GREAT, that's exciting! But you gotta fuel the workout. This goes back

to the flaw with fasted cardio, you really want to fuel your workout, so you can

have a higher intensity workout. Because the workout is going to be the

stimulus -it's going to be the trigger that's going to help you preserve that

lean muscle mass, keep your RMR elevated and it's going to

keep you burning that calorie source for 36 hours at a time. Fueling your

workout by using carbohydrates before you train, is going to let you have a higher

intensity workout, and the workout is the stimulus, it's the trigger that's going

to help fuel your RMR keep going for that 36 hours afterwards. You're going to

be burning calories from your much longer, right? That is exactly what we are

after, to keep that metabolic fire stoked, we don't want to lose the muscle, so how

do we do that? Well, we've already talked about keeping the protein high, focus on

strength training, and FUEL the workout! So if you're low carb and you go into a

workout, what does your body want to burn during the workout? It wants to burn carbs,

right? So you're not going to have as high intensity of a workout, you're not

going to perform, as well, so it's one of those things you need to focus on the

training, and then once you're out of the gym you can focus more on the diet,

and that's why, I mean we're covering three tips here, how many tips could we cover?

100 tips, for muscle building, fat loss, athletic performance? I mean this could just

go on forever, I'm right now focusing on the three biggest mistakes I see people

make, three simple fixes that people can make and dramatically change their

muscle growth and fat loss. So these should be the highest impact tips.

So what does fueling your workout look like? Well, it could be as simple as having 30 to

50 grams of carbohydrates before your workout, and don't forget, you have to

take that calorie content into account. You're adding calories before your

workout -they are very purposeful calories, these are very important

calories, but don't forget to pull them out of the rest of your diet. So say drop

50 grams of carbs from elsewhere in your diet,

just get that powerful workout stimulus, and that's what fueling your workout is

going to do. I am certainly NOT recommending caffeine, but there could be a

synergistic effect, combining the carbohydrates and the caffeine, help

improve performance, especially in a caloric deficit situation. I'm not

talking a rigorous science here, this is just subjective perception, typically

it's something I stay away from, but I don't think this is too far of a stretch

to say you're going to feel a lot better if you have caffeine an hour before and

then some fast carbs before the workout. Not rocket surgery here, I don't think. So

again these are quick and simple tips, I want everybody to be able to apply these,

nothing too crazy or complex here, we're going to go into more detail, more

science in other videos, but for this one, I really just wanted this to be a

simple, quick, take home that everybody can use.

So just to recap three tips: 1 skip the fasted cardio unless you really love it,

focus on strength training, okay? You're not going to get too big, you're going to

help preserve that lean muscle mass and keep your RMR, your Resting Metabolic Rate,

elevated. Tip number two: increase relative protein intake 1 to1.4 grams per

pound of lean body mass. This is again going to help preserve your fire, your

metabolic fire, keep it burning for over 36 hours, and

keep that lean muscle mass. Tip number 3: fuel your workout. Make sure you can push

hard when you need to (and that's going to be during the workout). So some carbs,

maybe a little caffeine, if you want to an hour before, the carbs say 30 minutes

before or 45 minutes before, depending on what you're consuming. It's going to help

push you through that workout, let you push harder to get that stimulus that

you're after that -fat-burning stimulus, that's going to last 36 hours, stoking

that Resting Metabolic Rate! If you found this video helpful, you probably know

someone else who can use it, share it with them and they just might owe you a

protein shake. Thanks for watching, I'm David Barr and until next time, Raise The Barr.

BREAKING News From ALABAMA!!! FELONY CHARGES FILED!!! - Duration: 44:15.

BREAKING News From ALABAMA!!!

FELONY CHARGES FILED!!!

And in another case of Democrats being Democrats….

It's now being reported that the former Alabama Secretary of State Nancy Worley has

turned herself into the Montgomery County Jail early Thursday morning and has now been

released on bond.

Her surrender comes as a grand jury indicted Worley on charges stemming from her unsuccessful

campaign for re-election last year.

All through her four years in office, she faced a battery of complaints which ranged

from criticism of her selection of a gas-guzzling SUV that the state paid for, to the number

of employees who were unhappy working under her.

The indictment states that Worley broke that law when she wrote a letter to her employees

with the words underlined saying, "I want to ask for your support and your vote in the

June 2006 Democratic Primary Election."

For those who aren't aware of it, it's considered ethical for an elected Secretary

of State to ask the people who work under her for their vote.

If she was a good candidate, and a good Secretary of State she wouldn't need to ask her own

employees for their vote.

At least you would think that would be the case.

Now we know the Democrats are a corrupt bunch, this is not news, and this hack is no different.

But I really honestly believe she has no other choice than to get a gas guzzling SUV for

obvious reasons I really don't need to get into.

That being said, what in the world is going on in the state of Alabama?

I know many thought Roy Moore was creepy but is this lady any better?

And who really cares if they are creepy or not, all I know is that Alabama picked a Senator

who is pro-choice up until the day of birth.

That doesn't seem to fit Alabama values very well!

Via Al.com:

Abortion clearly a 'difficult issue' for Alabama Democrats as Doug Jones pushes pro-choice

stance

After Josh Crowley listened to Doug Jones' interview with NBC's Chuck Todd late last

month, he took to Facebook and urged his friends to ignore the Senate hopeful's pro-choice

stance on abortion.

"Too many Christians look at just the issue of abortion in making their political decisions,

but there is so much more that has the potential for legislation at the national level,"

said Crowley, 27, a University of South Alabama student who describes himself as pro-life,

and a Jones supporter.

"I think it's obvious that the abortion issue can really get in the way for any liberal

candidates."

Jones, the Democratic opponent of strongly conservative Roy Moore in the Dec. 12 Senate

election, raised some eyebrows among political observers in Alabama and elsewhere after he

said during the Todd interview that he would not support legislation to ban abortion after

20 weeks of pregnancy.

The U.S. House approved a similar measure, largely along partisan lines, which would make the

practice illegal.

The Jones campaign, last week, doubled-down on the candidate's pro-choice platform:

"I support a woman's right and freedom to choose what to do with her body.

This is a decision between a woman, her doctor and her Lord.

Who am I to tell a woman what to do with her body?"

Jones, in a statement, added, "I also support Planned Parenthood because they provide cancer

screening, breast exams, contraceptives, prenatal care, and other vital, sometimes life-saving,

services to hundreds of thousands of women.

These are my beliefs."

'Liberal view'

Jones' statement underscores a vexing cultural issue conundrum for Democrats in Alabama,

who haven't won a statewide race in nearly a decade and haven't occupied one of the

state's two Senate seats since 1992.

But with Jones, many Democrats believe, they have a good opportunity of pulling an electoral

upset over Moore, who is a far-right ex-judge twice booted from the bench for violating

federal orders.

"Republicans have to make this election be about abortion and the national Democratic

Party because they know that if his election is about their candidate, they stand a good

chance at losing," said state Rep. Craig Ford, D-Gadsden, the former minority leader

of the Alabama House.

"They see abortion as a way to keep moderate Republicans who are turned off by Roy Moore

from voting for a Democrat."

Abortion politics in Alabama seem to weigh heavily in the Republican Party's favor.

Alabama is one of the top states in the U.S. for voters who identify as Christians.

Nearly half identify as evangelical Protestants – a group that largely consists of white

and conservative-leaning voters.

According to the most recent Pew Research Center's study, 58 percent of Alabama residents

believe abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, while only 37 percent believe

it should be legal.

Only Arkansas (at 60 percent) and Mississippi (at 59 percent) have a higher percentage of

residents who want to criminalize abortions.

Alabama's statistics contrast with the national split over the issue, according to a Gallup

poll taken in early May.

But the same poll showed that 71 percent of Democrats call themselves "pro-choice,"

the highest that statistic has been in at least 17 years.

Republicans, including Moore – the former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice who won

last month's GOP runoff against Senator Luther Strange, for the right to face off

against Jones – are on the attack.

A Moore campaign spokeswoman, last week, said Jones' comments are "the most liberal,

extremist view" on abortion.

"Doug Jones' views on abortion are way out of line on how a larger majority of Alabamians

feel on the issue," said Brent Buchanan, a Montgomery-based Republican strategist.

"There is a strong contingent of people in our state which this is a make or break

issue for them."

Democratic supporters, however, are countering with appreciation toward Jones' stance,

which they believe is a "genuine response.

Zac McCrary, a Democratic pollster based in Montgomery, said he believes most Alabamians

are "sort of the middle" of the issue, and while they support some abortion restrictions,

they do not want government interfering in someone's personal choices.

'Difficult' issue

Ford, though, acknowledges the difficulty the issue poses for Democrats not only in

Alabama, but elsewhere.

He noted the differences between national Democratic leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck

Schumer, who support inclusion of pro-life Democrats into the party fold, and the National

Democratic Party led by Chairman Tom Perez, who said in April that pro-choice is "non-negotiable"

and shouldn't vary by geography.

The abortion debate for Democrats comes ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, when the party

defends a number of Senate seats in traditionally red states.

"The National Democratic Party has made it difficult for pro-life people to feel welcome

in the party," said Ford.

"Most of the elected officials who have switched parties in Alabama over the last

six or seven years have cited abortion as a key reason for leaving.

It's definitely a problem for Democrats in conservative states."

Thomas Groome, a professor of theology and religious studies at Boston University, addressed

the issue in a New York Times piece in March, when he blamed Democrat Hillary Clinton's

struggles nationally to the abortion issue.

"It's almost like the Democrats have made it a litmus test to support Roe v. Wade,"

Groome said, referring to the landmark 1973 Supreme Court case which gave women the right

to choose whether to have an abortion during the first trimester.

"To say 'I'm supporting Roe v. Wade,' that opinion is so dated now.

Eighty percent of people don't want to criminalize abortion, but a majority favors some sort

of time limit (before receiving one).

Matthew Tyson, a marketing strategist and a member of the Calhoun County Democratic

Committee, is a pro-life Democrat who has done research with Democrats for Life of America.

But he, too, has faced backlash from other liberals and progressives who have told him

that he has no place within the Democratic Party.

"The fact that Democrats put so much emphasis on abortion has to be one of the worst branding

mistakes in the last 50 years," he said.

He said a main reasons why groups he supports continue to work with Democrats is because

of their platform – living wages, health care, better sex education, child care support,

etc. – "goes a long way to address those 'root causes'" which leads to women seeking

an abortion.

"Outlawing abortion won't make abortions go away, nor will it do anything to help women

in a crisis pregnancy," he said.

"I believe we need to first attack the social pressures that would require a woman to abort

in the first place."

Tyson and Groome both believe that the issue could hinder Jones' prospects at winning

the Senate seat.

Polls show that Moore has a 6 to 8 percent lead over his Democratic rival, representing

a much tighter race than Moore had against his GOP rival, Strange.

Most pre-election polls showed Moore with a commanding lead over Strange ahead of the

Sept. 26 runoff.

"I can't for the life of me figure out why Jones would put such a clear pro-choice

stance at the forefront of his campaign," Tyson said.

"I think perhaps he's putting too much faith in the 'kitchen table issues' approach,

and hoping that Alabamians will put aside their differences on abortion to come together

for jobs, education, etc."

He added, "Most of the people Jones needs to win … for them, it's a make or break

issue, so you cannot come out with the traditional Democratic stance, especially in Alabama.

His stance may not drive Republicans to vote for Moore, but it could encourage them to

just stay home.

He can't afford that."

Groome said Jones should focus more on effective social services that lead to a reduction in

abortions, such as easier access to birth control.

He noted that abortion rates continue to decline, reaching historic lows in 2013 and 2014, and

researchers believe it's due to improved contraception use.

Unintended pregnancies declined from 2008-2011,after experiencing an increase from 2001-2008.

"When you deny people social services, the abortion rate skyrockets," Groome said.

"The Republican policies cause abortions and it is too bad Mr. Jones didn't say that."

'Political damage'

Longtime political observers in Alabama believe that Jones has waded into a difficult political

position in Alabama, where hot-button cultural issues can swamp economic messages during

a campaign.

Steve Flowers, a former Republican member of the Alabama House who now writes a political

column that appears in more than 60 newspapers around the state, said Alabama voters historically

tend to be "driven by race and religion" whereas "most states in the country are

driven by economic issues."

Indeed, Jones' platform has focused more on economic issues, the environment, and civil

rights.

Jones, in the early 2000s, led the successful prosecution of two Ku Klux Klan members for

their role in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham.

Jess Brown, a retired political science professor at Athens State University, said that Jones

needs to maintain focus on economics.

If social issues – such as abortion, same-sex marriage and gun rights – dominate the campaign,

"then the Dems lose in Bama."

William Stewart, a professor emeritus of political sciences at the University of Alabama, said

that despite the recent massacre in Las Vegas, gun rights are likely not to rise to the top

of social concerns during the Senate campaign.

Instead, he said, abortion is likely to become a more discussed topic following the addition

of conservative Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"With more Trump appointees on the Supreme Court, Roe v. Wade could be reversed or at

least modified to allow states to put more restrictions on abortions," Stewart said.

"No matter what bread and butter issues (Jones) discusses, Alabamians will not be

persuaded if they are reminded of Mr. Jones' position on abortion."

Quin Hillyer, a conservative columnist based in Mobile, said that Jones' position on

abortion is a problem for his candidacy.

"Because he has stated his position so openly, there is almost nothing he can say now that

would lessen the political damage his stance causes him," Hillyer said.

Flowers said he wouldn't be surprised to see Moore ads targeting the issue, especially

if the race tightens between the two around Thanksgiving.

"You have to respect his position," Flowers said about Jones.

"But I don't think he's in the mainstream of Alabama."
