Youtube daily report May 28 2018

witches photography, watermarks and levitations

today we're going to be discussing how this photo was made

how popular it got and the consequence of

going viral in the digital age, as a photographer

my original intention with this video was to make a simple tutorial on how to

actually accomplish this in post-processing but I slowly realized

that this was much more of an interesting story than just a simple

editing tutorial

the beginning started a lot earlier than I thought and after the

photo was featured, the ending it got a lot more complicated

so let's start at the very beginning

I only started shooting in 2013 and in my first year

just like all our first years

we're very creative we shoot everything until we

find out what we're good at but the only way to find out how is

through experience and lots of trial and error

I've always had a passion for witches and wizards

you know, being a magician, I had been familiar with a lot of the material in

old texts and images

I was really drawn to the classical interpretation of witches

you know before Hollywood took over and made them green and ugly

I wanted to recreate the original atmosphere from the old paintings

my true goal was to make this photo look like it was taken a hundred years ago

so within only a few months of starting photography I put out a casting call on

a site called model mayhem

I even mentioned flying naked witches to a few

the models on there so one by one all of the models flaked it required nudity and

no one else could see my vision so I just gave up on the idea

it was eerie

going through those old messages the vision was so clear it's almost as if my

current self went back in time to my old self and tried to describe the concept

of this photo to these other models but they had no idea what I was talking

about back then

fast forward a few years and I had built

up a decent reputation and portfolio

it wasn't until there was a shoot with

smoke grenades with Lady katastrophic, that the vision suddenly came back I've

always been obsessed with thick fog but it's impossible to predict natural fog

is quite elusive so it's hard to organize a shoot that requires it

not to mention finding five models willing to get naked in the woods

and get up at 5 in the morning

so after the initial richness of the purple fog the smoke started to dissipate

and then it became this hazy like atmosphere and I knew then

it was possible to create fog

I let her take care of the casting because previously I

had failed convincing five girls to get naked in the woods

I wonder why

the casting went great we attracted about a dozen models but my issue was a lot of

them were alternative models

the thing is modern witches tend to be more gothic

or alternative and that's fine for right now but back in the day you wouldn't see

any tattoos or piercings or colored hair

so as alluring as that "alt" look is that

it's it's just not what I wanted for this photo and the whole goal of this

photo was to make it look like it was taken a hundred years ago which would be

kind of impossible if everyone had tattoos

we had about six that fit the bill and when it came down to the day of the

shoot we were down to four Navi Kat Melissa and Jana and of course

we had our security which was a bodybuilder kori

I also had Photoshop on

my side so I knew I could clone anybody if I needed an extra body

now it came time to the actual photo shoot

the main focus of the shot was obviously the

floating witch in the middle or the floating virgin sacrifice in the middle

but first the problem with levitation photos

let me talk about this for a second

so how do we make sure that levitation doesn't look bad being a

magician certainly helped but there's a lot of levitation photos out there that

are just not not very good

the problem with a lot of levitation pictures out

there is that instead of a levitation picture it seems more like an invisible

chair picture all they do is they put their model on a chair or table and then

just remove it in Photoshop

it just looks bad it looks cheesy

and it just makes levitation photos in general and magic look bad and being a

magician it just irks me it's just it's just so easy to fix maybe we'll do a

separate video on how to do a levitation photo properly so there were only two

options to make sure she didn't look like she was just laying on an invisible

aquarium

option one was to dangle the model from a harness to make sure that

her body would fall into place

instead of just being flat like it was on a table

so option two would be to hold the model between her armpit and her knee to

make sure her butt is free of any constraints and it's not flat at the

bottom which is the problem with a lot of levitation photos out there since the

trees were too high to dangle rope from and that just the logistics of it were

too dangerous we went with option two

once we got the floating shot we were

ready for the other girls and the smoke grenades

I was going to combine many pictures into one picture kind of like a double

exposure except time 5

in this video I won't go into the specifics of exactly

how to play with layers to combine multiple images into one so go watch

that video after this video make sure you watch this one first though

I only had two smoke grenades left so I knew the window of opportunity

was very low

we only had 90 seconds

so I had to simultaneously move the grenades

around and with the other hand take pictures with a remote app on my phone

multitasking just a little

I directed the models to sit-stand go in a circle

I needed many options and during this whole time Cory and I were circling the

girls as I was also triggering the camera to snap the photos

I was lucky

enough that the photos were in focus

but the smoke did get overwhelming in the

end and a lot of the photos at the end didn't make it

few of them did

so I had enough to work with for what I had in mind

I chose my

best images that work together and using layers in Photoshop I combined them into

a final image

once again see the multiplicity video to get the exact

details of how this was done

now here is something you never would have guessed

the smoke was not white look how colorful they are a totally different

mood no

photo was released on October 31st 2016

now I submitted it to a dark Beauty magazine soon after that but it didn't

get featured until way later

I like dark Beauty magazine because previously one

of my photos had gotten 10,000 likes and 500 fans overnight so I thought if that

photo did so well this photo should do really well

it finally got featured on

July 2017 Facebook Instagram website and even tumblr

it received 6666 shares and

it was so popular that it even became their cover photo

keep in mind dark Beauty magazine has over 1 million Facebook fans we were all

thrilled with the amount of attention and exposure this photo was getting

but then came the darkness of the digital age

every few days one of my

followers would find the floating witches photo online somewhere on a

featured account or a blog or web site

now sometimes they kept all the credits

from the dark Beauty they just reblogged it which was fine although they didn't

keep the actual tagging feature and other times they remove the credits

entirely or even worse

put a cringy color filter on top

now the smaller accounts are harmless and are bound to happen

but then the bigger accounts

started featuring them netting

ten thousand twenty thousand likes and

credits were removed

some were nice and cooperative and fixed their errors while

others just played dumb and just ignored the problem altogether or even at worst

blocked me so I couldn't complain about it

the worst part about seeing your

photo with twenty thousand likes and credits removed is the genuine interest

in the comments

who is this photographer? where can I buy a print?

and then after

me commenting having the photo completely removed losing access to

twenty thousand potential fans so even if one out of 1,000 actually bought

something that's money out of my own pocket

shit its a deer

so many missed opportunities all the fame without any of the benefits

after commenting fruitlessly on their comment section

I realized a lot of these big

accounts don't have time to check the comments don't have time to see every

message that gets sent to them

because there's so much spam so I started doing

something a little bit different

at the time Instagram stories was a new thing

so I would put up a story and tag them and then say something like forgot to

add credits

a lot of times they would just reply and be like oops sorry I

didn't see that you weren't tagged here let me fix that and other times it got a

lot worse

in one of these cases my Instagram story direct message method

actually worked

one of these accounts took a screenshot of my story all my

story said was it's a good time to be an artist and she took a screenshot of this

and posted it to her 250,000 fans trying to call me out for standing up for

myself

so apparently in the comment section it went something like this

I found it

online so therefore it's in the public domain I am free to use it as I will

the commenters who were backing me up were sort of like

that's akin to saying that

people who got raped deserve to be because of the way they were dressed

just because you found something and you have access to it doesn't mean you're

entitled to it

and she was all like

it's all ....

(laughs) I can't do this

a few photographers in the industry had a lot of insightful things to say

and one photographer in

particular even bought a photo himself

after posting about it I ended up

getting 1,200 fans in one hour

reverse image set did not yield a photographer's

name so don't tell me to do that thanks mysterymanphoto

if you wanted to be credited why didn't you just put a watermark on it?

think of a time that you picked up a magazine National Geographic or or anything any

sort of publication that you remember seeing a giant watermark of the

photographer

that's right it doesn't happen because part of any publication

standard is that watermarks must be removed

this was very much the case in

this scenario as I submitted to dark beauty magazines and they asked for the

watermark to be removed

so once I brought up this issue to the would-be

offender here we just cleared it up we just realized it was a giant

misunderstanding on her part and

she apologized and we were friends right

after that

until she blocked me five minutes later

the gist of it was

to many living in the digital age they don't know the difference between what's

in the public domain and searchable by Google

they assume that because an image

is so easily searchable it's theirs

because they did the digging so now we

have all these feature accounts out there they're kind of like a mixtape a

collection of the best of a niche they're great for bringing exposure to

small artists if used properly

but luckily not everyone is a dick who's out

to get you there are honest misunderstandings sometimes and

sometimes all you need is just a conversation

artists and feature account

should be a perfect match

they bring the original content and they bring the

audience

it's a mutual beneficial relationship

so is our online photo safe

out there in a world of accessibility and entitlement?

is a watermark even good enough?

how would you handled the situation?

do you watermark every single thing you do?

is there even a point?

leave a comment below and share your

watermarking stories

if you want to see more behind the scenes and the stories

behind certain photographs

comment below on which ones you'd like to see we'll do

more behind the photo stories like this if you guys like that kind of stuff

if you'd like to purchase your own copy of The Witches photo there will be a

link below as well as any other photo that might strike your fancy so don't

forget to subscribe like and share with your photographer friends

thanks mystery man photo

Crooked Hillary In Huge Trouble After Pres Trump Just EXPOSED What Will Finally Bring Her Down - Duration: 3:31.

Crooked Hillary In Huge Trouble After Pres Trump Just EXPOSED What Will Finally Bring

Her Down.

President Trump came out swinging Sunday morning, slamming former Obama officials, the '13

Angry Democrats' and Crooked Hillary Clinton in an explosive tweet.

The President knows the 'Art of the Deal,' furthermore, he knows how to trigger the media

and his haters without holding back.

President Trump isn't afraid to call it like he see's it, which is one of the reasons

many American's stood up and voted for him.

With that being said, it's been two years into the phony 'witch hunt' investigation

and while there is absolutely no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and

Russia, Mueller's investigation still lingers on.

Conveniently, what has been brought to light is the wrong doing's of the Obama administration,

Crooked Hillary, the FBI, CIA, and DOJ.

There was proven collusion, and now a SPY.

President Trump slammed Robert Mueller's 'witch hunt', referring to the "13 Angry

Democrats" on his phony probe declaring that they should have been working to investigate

Hillary Clinton controversies.

The President refers to the "13 angry Democrats" to the people on Mueller's probe who he

believes are biased and in the tank for Crooked Hillary.

Trump tweeted, "Why didn't the 13 Angry Democrats investigate the campaign of Crooked

Hillary Clinton, many crimes, much Collusion with Russia?

Why didn't the FBI take the Server from the DNC?

Rigged Investigation!

Additionally, the president sent out a series of three explosive tweets Saturday blasting

those members and shaming Mueller's witch hunt into the phony collusion.

He questioned why the FBI and DOJ did not inform him that there were FBI informantsin

his 2016 presidential campaign.

The President tweeted, "With Spies, or "Informants" as the Democrats like to call them because

it sounds less sinister (but it's not), all over my campaign, even from a very early

date, why didn't the crooked highest levels of the FBI or "Justice" contact me to

tell me of the phony Russia problem?"

President Trump also called the Russia investigation "rigged" and mentioned that there were

conflicts of interest between the FBI informants under the Obama administration and their role

in the Trump campaign.

"This whole Russia Probe is Rigged.

Just an excuse as to why the Dems and Crooked Hillary lost the Election and States that

haven't been lost in decades.

13 Angry Democrats, and all Dems if you include the people who worked for Obama for 8 years.

#SPYGATE & CONFLICTS OF INTEREST!"

"When will the 13 Angry Democrats (& those who worked for President ), reveal their disqualifying

Conflicts of Interest?

It's been a long time now!

Will they be indelibly written into the Report along with the fact that the only Collusion

is with the Dems, Justice, FBI & Russia?"

President Trump has been angry over the news that there was an FBI spy snooping around

in his campaign during the 2016 presidential election cycle and has called it "SPYGATE."

And, rightfully so, he should be MAD.

Furthermore, it's time Crooked Hillary crimes are looked into without the cover-ups.

what do you think about this?

A Revealing Statue of Washington Arrives, but Not Its Champion - Duration: 12:17.

A Revealing Statue of Washington Arrives, but Not Its Champion

Naked George arrived in New York on schedule.

The Italian woman who played a big role in arranging for Naked George to look stately and noble on this side of the Atlantic — specifically, in the Frick Collection, on Fifth Avenue — did not.

Naked George — though that is not its official name — is a 200-year-old plaster statue of the first president in the buff.

The woman is Franca Coin, the president of a small museum in Italy that owns the statue.

Xavier F.

Salomon, the Frick's chief curator, declared flatly: "This never would have happened without her.".

"This" is an exhibition that opened at the Frick last week, a case study of how the sculptor Antonio Canova worked.

"Naked George," a term coined by a friend of Ms.

Coin's, was one of four smallish plaster models that Canova made in preparation for a larger-than-life marble statue.

But Ms.

Coin remained in Italy, missing the opening of the exhibition, which brought the four models and a larger plaster version to the United States for the first time, even though the commission that put Canova to work came from North Carolina in 1816.

"I had the tickets," Ms.

Coin said by phone from Rome.

"I should have been in New York on the fourth of May.

I am the godmother" of the exhibition at the Frick.

But she said that orthopedic problems and a possible knee replacement stopped her.

Mr Salomon called her "a force of nature." Not only is she the president of the Canova museum in tiny Possagno, 350 miles from Rome, she is the president of Friends of Venice Italy, a New York-based group that raises money to support the Venice International Foundation.

She is the president of that group, too.

Under the Venice International Foundation's umbrella is the Civic Museums Foundation of Venice, which runs the museums there.

She and her husband, Piergiorgio Coin — who has produced wine and olive oil since selling his family's department stores — live in a famous Palladian villa on the Grand Canal, Palazzo Barbaro.

Henry James stayed there from time to time, and it inspired the setting for his novel "The Wings of the Dove." (The character Mrs.

Gareth was a reworking of the Boston art collector and museum donor Isabella Stewart Gardner.) James was not the only well-known visitor.

Others included the poet Robert Browning, the painters Claude Monet and William Merritt Chase and the novelist Edith Wharton.

Coin's New York, when she makes the trip, seems to center on the Upper East Side, not far from the Frick.

The choreographer Susan Stroman, a friend from the Friends of Venice board, said one compass point is Sant Ambroeus, a restaurant just up Madison Avenue from the Carlyle Hotel, where Ms.

Coin usually stays.

"I take her to the theater and the ballet, but before we do anything, we have to have that espresso at Saint Ambroeus," Ms.

Stroman said.

"We can't do anything until we have that espresso.".

"She has unbelievable energy," Ms.

Stroman said. "Maybe it's the espresso.".

Another Friends of Venice board member, Jonathan Marder, said that Ms.

Coin "always talks about smoking.".

"She says Venice is a small city and she clearly loves it," he said, "but if she has a cigarette outside, someone calls her husband.

In New York, she says she can smoke all the way from the Carlyle to Uniqlo, which she loves.".

"She says New York is unbelievably free," Mr Marder continued.

"In Europe, there is a desire to cling to the ideas of aristocracy.

That's not her.

She is the least snobbish person I know, and in a way, I think of her as an American.

She believes in artists and accomplishment.

She believes in the superiority of great talent like Canova.

It's as if she's perfectly matched to appreciate George Washington.".

And Ms.

Coin is passionate about the first president.

"I was there" — in Venice, visiting — "when she was trying to make this happen," Ms.

Stroman said, referring to the Frick exhibition.

"She was all excited to tell me about it and wanted it to come to America.

She knew of the excitement about the Revolution because of 'Hamilton' and how Americans seem to have been tapping into it.

The idea that Thomas Jefferson would have been involved with this sculpture of George Washington" — it was Jefferson who suggested Canova for the commission — "seemed to her so exciting that she felt the Americans needed to see it.".

Coin said that when she discovered the Canova museum had the Washington models, she wondered how she could "connect our treasure in Italy with the United States.".

That was before she met Mr Salomon, who already knew the story, including its devastating finale.

Canova's statue — the final, marble version — lasted only 10 years before it was destroyed in a fire in the state house in Raleigh.

The ceiling fell in, smashing the statue into pieces.

"I loved the story" Mr Salomon said.

"I had gone to North Carolina.

I had seen the fragments.

I knew the story and I knew the objects.

I always thought this would be a wonderful story to tell at the Frick.".

A curator is like that.

A writer has a story that sooner or later becomes a novel or a play.

A curator dreams of an exhibition to stage.

So when Mr Salomon met Ms.

Coin and she said she had become the president of the Canova museum, they hit it off.

"She said, 'Why don't we do something together?'" he recalled.

"I said, 'Why don't we do Washington?'".

Canova's Washington looks younger than the wigged statesman of the famous Gilbert Stuart portrait.

In the exhibition, the Frick's own Gilbert Stuart, acquired by Henry Clay Frick in 1918, the year before he died, is across the room from a portrait of Canova.

It was painted, in London, during the time Canova was working on the Washington statue.

But Canova and Washington never met — Washington had been dead for 17 years before Canova received the commission (and, obviously, the body for the statue in the buff was someone else's).

Canova worked from a bust owned by an American diplomat who shipped it to Canova's studio in Rome.

The bust was by Giuseppe Ceracchi, who had visited America and had done busts of Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin.

Ceracchi also considered making a Statue of Liberty, nearly a century before France sent one over, but never got around to it.

He did not have time.

He was guillotined in 1801 after he was implicated in an assassination plot against Napoleon Bonaparte.

"People wrote at the time that Ceracchi's Washington was the most lifelike of all," Mr Salomon said.

So what about the Canova? What would Washington have said about it?.

"Washington was shy about images," Mr Salomon said.

"I don't think he'd have been thrilled by this.".

Bloody but forgotten WWII battle still haunts soldiers - Duration: 9:25.

Bloody but forgotten WWII battle still haunts soldiers

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — William Roy Dovers memory of the World War II battle is as sharp as it was 75 years ago, even though its been long forgotten by most everyone else.

His first sergeant rousted him from his pup tent around 2 a.m.

when word came the Japanese were attacking and had maybe even gotten behind the American front line, on a desolate, unforgiving slab of an occupied island in the North Pacific.

He was shouting, Get up! Get out! Dover said.

Dover and most of the American soldiers rushed to an embankment on what became known as Engineer Hill, the last gasp of the Japanese during the Battle of Attu , fought 75 years ago this month on Attu Island in Alaskas Aleutian chain.

I had two friends that were too slow to get out, the 95-year-old Alabama farmer recalled.

They both got bayonetted in their pup tents..

Joseph Sasser, then a skinny 20-year-old from Cartharge, Mississippi, also found himself perched against the berm on Engineer Hill when a captain with a rifle took up a position about 10 feet (3 meters) away.

I noticed about after 30 minutes or so, he was awfully quiet, Sasser said.

We checked to see if he had a pulse and if he was alive, and he was not.

We didnt even know he had been shot, said Sasser, also 95.

American forces reclaimed remote Attu Island on May 30, 1943, after a 19-day campaign that is known as World War IIs forgotten battle.

Much of the fighting was hand-to-hand, waged in dense fog and winds of up to 120 mph (193 kph).

The battle for the Aleutian island was one of the deadliest in the Pacific in terms of the percentage of troops killed.

Nearly all the Japanese forces, estimated at about 2,500 soldiers, died with only 28 survivors.

About 550 or so U.S.

soldiers were killed.

American forces, many poorly outfitted for Alaska weather and trained in California for desert combat, recaptured Attu 11 months after the Japanese took it and a nearby island, Kiska.

It was the only WWII battle fought on North American soil.

The Japanese staged a last-ditch, desperate offensive May 29 at Engineer Hill.

Japanese soldiers surprise American forces on Attu with a fanatical charge out of the mountains, recounts an Associated Press chronology of WWII events in 1943.

Savage fighting rages throughout the day and into the following night.

About 200 Japanese soldiers died in the assault, and the remaining 500 or so held grenades to their bellies and pulled the pins.

It was the first official case of gyokusai, a Japanese euphemism for annihilation or mass suicide in the name of Emperor Hirohito, which increasingly occurred in other Japanese battlefields.

Tomimatsu Takahashi told Japanese public television network NHK in 2010 he was being treated for a bullet wound when the order for the final charge came.

I was going to die, I thought, he said.

But as he headed out to fight, he collapsed, likely because he hadnt eaten in days.

He was captured and sent to several mainland POW camps — including in Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago — before he returned home to Japans Iwate prefecture in 1947.

His family already had a funeral and grave for him.

I felt so relieved to be home, he said.

But I never thought I was lucky to be alive.

I thought I survived because I was not lucky.

I felt I was not supposed to come back, because those who went to war were not supposed to come back, and thats what we were taught..

After the battle, Dover said things went back to normal for the American soldiers — except one thing: Somebody had to bury those Japanese.

During the war, the U.S.

Army buried the Japanese soldiers bodies with care, built a memorial, set up a grave post and paid respects to the spirits, said Nobuyuki Yamazaki, whose grandfather died on Attu.

Yamazaki was among a delegation of Japanese soldiers descendants who attended a 75th anniversary celebration this month in Anchorage.

The families have formally petitioned the Japanese government to have the remains returned, Anchorage television station KTVA reported.

Japanese people find great comfort when the remains of the Japanese are buried in our homeland, Yamazaki said.

The Aleut people living on Attu Island also suffered losses, becoming the only North American community to be imprisoned in Japan during the war, according to the book Attu: The Forgotten Battle, by John Haile Cloe.

While Kiska was unpopulated, about 45 Aleuts lived on Attu Island.

When Japanese forces invaded, the Aleuts were captured and sent to Japans Hokkaido Island, where about half died, most from malnutrition or starvation.

The survivors never returned to Attu.

The Army said it would be too expensive to rebuild their village, and they were relocated after the war.

The battle over Attu proved to be unimportant to the rest of the war, possibly why its forgotten today.

However, American planes did use the island to bomb the northernmost reaches of Japan.

And author and historian Cloe, who died in 2016, told the AP in 1993 that the Army learned much about amphibious landings and Japanese tactics from the battle.

The U.S.

Fish and Wildlife Service now owns Attu Island, which is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.

Seventy-five years later, 102-year-old Allan Seroll of Massachusetts, who worked in communications including Morse code for the Army Signal Corps, still carries the burden of the Battle of Attu.

I wake up in the middle of the night, and I cant go back to sleep, Seroll told KTVA.

Thats what this has done to me.

Thats how much it affected me and still does..

'I'll be killed if I go back': Undocumented immigrant refuses to board flight at JFK

The van pulled up to John F.

Kennedy International Airport on a recent Thursday evening.

Around it, passengers poured out of taxis and headed toward their gates.

Inside the van, Prince Gbohoutou gripped his seat belt in fear.

The government was about to put the 26-year-old tattoo artist from Maryland on a flight to his native country in Africa.

A month earlier, Gbohoutou, a recently married asylum seeker from the Central African Republic, had gone to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement appointment in Baltimore hoping to get a work permit.

Instead, the New Carrollton resident was detained in front of his American wife and told he was being deported.

Now, ICE agents opened the van's door and ordered him out.

But Gbohoutou, with shackled hands, said he held fast to the seat.

He was afraid to return to the Central African Republic, where he said his mother had been killed.

As suitcase-toting bystanders looked on, Gbohoutou said, an ICE agent struck him on the legs with a baton while others tried to yank him out of the van.

Eventually, the ICE agents cut the seat belt with a knife — nicking Gbohoutou's hand — before handcuffing him to a wheelchair and taking him to his flight, he claimed.

But the airline refused to take an unwilling passenger, Gbohoutou said, and ICE was forced to return him — at least temporarily — to his cell.

Justine W.

Whelan, an ICE spokeswoman, said in a statement that "all allegations of physical abuse and mistreatment by ICE officers in this case are patently false." She said an immigration judge ordered Gbohoutou deported seven years ago, his appeal was denied and it was the agency's "duty to execute that final order.".

But Gbohoutou's story, including the dramatic airport scene on May 24, has sparked a new campaign to allow him to remain in the United States, where he came legally as a child and spent much of his life.

Sen.

Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) has become an advocate for Gbohoutou, saying he is "part of our community" and could be in "imminent danger" if deported.

Van Hollen said he has contacted officials at ICE and the Department of Homeland Security, warning them that his removal would be "unjust.".

"I'll be killed if I go back," Gbohoutou said Saturday in a telephone interview from an ICE detention center in Frederick, Md.

"I'm just hoping some people find it in their hearts to [let me stay].".

Similar, if less dramatic, encounters have played out with increasing frequency across the country as the Trump administration cracks down on illegal immigration.

Undocumented immigrants without criminal records, like Gbohoutou, who were generally off-limits under the Obama administration, are now fair game, officials say.

Gbohoutou came to the United States legally in 2006, when he was 14, to join his father, who worked for their country's ambassador in Washington.

His mother stayed behind in the Central African Republic, one of the world's poorest countries long wracked by religious and civil conflict.

When the situation there worsened, his father applied for asylum, including his son as a dependent.

But the application was rejected.

When their appeal was also denied, his father thought it better to remain in the United States illegally than return.

"The fact that he was brought here as a kid means he's really blameless," said Adam Crandell, Gbohoutou's immigration attorney, noting that he graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville, Md.

, and was eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an Obama-era program to protect undocumented immigrants brought to this country as children.

Gbohoutou was still in high school when he met the woman who would become his wife.

He was on a D.C.

bus when on stepped Shaniece.

"He was cute, I was cute," she said.

"We exchanged words, and then we exchanged numbers.".

For their first date, he took her to her favorite restaurant, TGI Friday's.

For their second, she went to his senior prom.

But as they dated, Gbohoutou's life began to fall apart.

Shortly after his family's asylum application was denied, his mother was kidnapped in the Central Africa Republic by political rivals, he said.

"I guess they wanted my dad to go back," Gbohoutou said.

"They tortured her.

And they beat her to death.".

His father died a few weeks later — a "physical manifestation of grief," Crandell said — leaving Gbohoutou to navigate life in the United States as an undocumented immigrant.

That life was not without incident.

Gbohoutou was arrested in 2011, when he was 19, for allegedly shoplifting from a mall, Crandell said, but the charges were dropped.

His only other criminal charge, for failure to present identification to police during a traffic stop in 2016, was also dropped.

In 2014, Gbohoutou was detained by ICE for about six months.

Crandell said it was unclear why his client was held, but it might have been connected with the shoplifting charge.

Since then, Gbohoutou has been required to check in with ICE periodically.

Despite worries over the new administration, his first few check-ins under President Trump went without a hitch.

The last one, on Shaniece's birthday, seemed to be a sign that his hard luck had ended.

The couple wed last May, and had recently begun the process to get him a green card.

This spring they vacationed in Florida.

When they returned, there was an envelope from ICE waiting.

The agency asked Gbohoutou to come in on April 19 but didn't say why.

The couple hoped it was so he could receive a work permit.

"We didn't have any fear," Shaniece said.

"We thought, what could go wrong?".

At the Baltimore office, Gbohoutou's name was called while Shaniece was in the bathroom.

When an ICE agent asked him if he had a relative to take his things, his stomach dropped.

When his wife returned, Gbohoutou told her to be strong.

"I put my head down and started crying," she said.

When she looked up, he was gone.

With the help of immigrants' rights group Sanctuary DMV, Shaniece hired Crandell and began a campaign to free her husband.

On May 16, Crandell filed a motion to reopen Gbohoutou's case.

But on Thursday, after missing a call from Gbohoutou, Shaniece rang his detention center only to be told he was being transferred to New York to be deported.

Crandell says he thinks his client was spared Thursday only because no ICE agent was scheduled to accompany him to Africa.

But he hopes the airport incident has bought him enough time to convince the Board of Immigration Appeals to reopen Gbohoutou's case.

Crandell said ICE was within its rights, but sending his client back to the Central African Republic would be "hamfisted and cruel.

Gbohoutou said he hopes to remain in the United States, become an architect and start a family.

"I'm not a bad person," he said, but added that if ICE tries to deport him again, "I'm still not going to get on the plane.

Among the Krakow printers who laid the foundations for the development of Polish printing,

today we will talk about Florian Ungler, because there is an opportunity for that.

Well, 505 years ago, on May 28, 1513.

he appeared - considered the first book printed in Polish

- "Soul's paradise" in the translation of Biernat from Lublin.

It was a work - a prayer book - typical of that period.

Ungler, one of the most important printers of his time, collaborated, among others

with other representatives of his profession with Lern, Heller or Szarfenberg.

The famous book by Ungler was a treatise on the Polish orthography of Stanisław Zaborowski (1514).

Thanks to establishing the graphic design of polish letters, the lack of which was an obstacle to the development of the Polish printed book,

this work was a key element allowing the development of Polish printing.

Ungler has published many well-known printed books of that era, including e.g.

Herbarist Stefan Falimirz "About herbs and their strength" (from 1534).

This publishing house is also considered to be

one of the first to provide a read and practical book to Polish readers.

This is illustrated by an interesting publication presenting the output of another publishing house that issued this time -

Maciej Szarfenberg's printing house.

Notebook "Polonia Typographica Saeculi Sedecimi [Polish stamping of the sixteenth century],

Monographs and reproductions of printing resources ",

includes a biography and a scientific study of the printing activity of Maciej Szarfenberg,

along with tables illustrating his achievements.

Does The Future Exist? - Duration: 7:58.

This episode was made possible by generous supporters on Patreon.

Hey Crazies.

We've been doing a lot with space-time diagrams lately.

Figuring out how different observers measure the passage of time.

But that got several of you asking:

Does that mean the future is predetermined and we don't have freewill?

Well, maybe, maybe not.

Deep questions like this require careful scrutiny.

All we know for sure from diagrams like this is that time exists.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the future or even the past exist.

Hmm.

Maybe we should define these words first.

The past is the time, or period of time, before the present.

The future is the time, or period of time, following the present.

So both of these are defined in terms of the current moment.

That kind of makes sense.

The present, the "now" is what we're experiencing.

But it feels like the past exists.

We remember the past happening.

Well, none of us remember that.

Or that.

But I certainly remember all of these moments, whether I want to or not.

But does that exist? or is that just a memory we're experiencing now?

The future also feels like it's going to happen

even if we don't know what it'll be.

Does that exist? or is it just a prediction we're making now?

Hmm.

Let's see what this looks like on a space-time diagram.

You are here.

This event represents your present. Your now.

Whether you're stationary, moving at a steady speed, constantly accelerating,

or doing something completely random, you can't go any faster than light.

Light travels along these diagonal paths, so your path is stuck inside those lines.

This half happened before your present.

It's your past.

All the events that might have influenced you.

This half will happen after your present.

It's your future.

All the events you might influence.

Your entire life is contained inside these regions,

no matter what you might have done or what you might decide to do.

Those two regions are called your past and future light-cones.

Cones? How are those cones?

Oh, right right right. Let me explain.

Only having a single space axis makes these look like triangles,

but if you include a second space axis, you can see they're really cones.

You just have to consider light traveling in any direction.

Actually, there are three space axes.

Yeah yeah, but our axis limit is three and one of them has to be time.

Besides, most motion happens in two dimensions anyway.

Let's not over-complicate this.

Anyway, this still leaves some things open.

I said the word "might" a lot during that space-time diagram.

So are we predetermined to travel our space-time paths or not?

This comes down to an idea called causality or "cause and effect."

And relativity rule number 6 says it must be maintained, no matter what.

That means, if one event causes another, then everyone agrees they happen in that order.

Cause before effect.

Let's say you are the cause and you want to affect me at particular time.

I must be somewhere in your future light-cone.

Maybe I'm directly on the path you're taking, so you'll be able to touch me.

Maybe I'm not on your path, but I'm close enough to throw a rock at.

Maybe I'm so far away from you, the only way you can affect me is with light.

In all cases, from all points of view, the cause comes before the effect.

So is all of time just a string of cause and effect?

Eh, not so fast.

If an event happens outside your influence, the distinction between past and future kind

of melts away.

Say there's an event outside your future light-cone, outside your influence.

You might still think it happens in the future because, on your timeline, it happens at a

later time.

But someone else might say it happened in the past

because, on their timeline, it happened at an earlier time.

Wait wait, something can happen in one person's future, but another person's past?

Yep.

So the future and the past are very personal concepts.

They belong to an observer.

But an observer is only in the present, which reminds of something.

There's one property of the universe we haven't considered: Locality.

or in local-ity.

We've discussed this in previous videos, but it could bear some repeating.

Whether we're talking basic mechanics, electromagnetism, space-time curvature,

or even quantum fields; the universe is inherently local.

The idea is that a physical thing can only be influenced by its immediate surroundings.

In other words, in order for a thing over there to affect

me here, it has to either come here or send something here.

Which brings us to another relevant question:

How big is here?

It's really small.

Local for a person might look like this.

This is pretty small for me.

OK, I have to admit, this is a little uncomfortable.

Anyway, this is my space, my here.

And it works for anything the size of me.

If that local box is too small, like it would be for my space station,

then it's a little overkill, but it's fine.

If it's way too big, like it would be for particles,

then it simply won't work.

So smaller is better.

Ideally, it would have exactly zero size, but that poses a few problems.

The main problem being that we can't divide by zero.

It just doesn't work.

Luckily, we've got a trick that gets us around this problem.

Let's start with two points separated by this much space.

Say this point is at 5 and this point is at 6, or 5 plus 1,

because they're separated by one unit.

Maybe it's inches, maybe it's centimeters.

Whatever. It doesn't matter.

If we make the space a little smaller, maybe the second point might be at 5 plus one half,

or 5 plus one tenth, or 5 plus one hundredth, or 5 plus one thousandth.

The points keep getting closer together.

They're almost the same point, but not quite.

We can keep this up, we can get closer and closer

and closer.

Until the points are at 5 and 5 plus an unimaginably tiny number.

So tiny, it's not even useful to label it as a number anymore.

We call it an infinitesimal and label it dx.

Welcome to calculus!

I know my calculus.

You plus me equals us.

Anyway, an infinitesimal is an amount of space that is as close to zero as we can get

without actually being zero.

It's as local as our math can get.

Of course, dx is just one dimension.

dx and dy make two dimensions.

Include a dz and you've got three dimensions, also known as space.

Include a dt and you've got a four-dimensional space-time.

The volume dx dy dz is the local here and the dt is the local now.

That's all that really exists.

There is no universal reference frame because there is no universe

at least in the way that people usually understand it.

This space-time diagram is only a map of predictions about a non-existent future.

and predictions about a non-existent past.

It's attached to you as you move through space-time.

Space-time doesn't deny you freewill because the future doesn't exist.

All that exists for anyone is their local here and their local now.

You might not have control over much in your life.

But you always have a choice about what kind of person you are here and now.

Make that choice a good one.

Please share your thoughts in the comments.

Thanks for liking and sharing this video.

Don't forget to subscribe if you'd like to keep up with us.

And until next time, remember, it's OK to be a little crazy.

Why is the speed of light that specific number?

Well, we know it can't go at infinite speed, because that would violate causality.

It has to be finite.

But the exact value is kind of an accident, as far as we can tell.

It could just as easily be a different value in a different universe.

That universe just might not have humans in it.

Anyway, thanks for watching!

Fast Fast!
