Endnotes Spelling Bee: When 'ch' says 'sh' - Duration: 4:14.Welcome to the Endnotes Spelling Bee!
In this miniseries I'm following up on the question I asked in my video about Spelling:
what are your spelling pet peeves?
Viewer Mr Peapolop brought up the problem of ch-words, particularly when ch sounds like
sh.
For this we'll have to return to the letter c.
As we saw in the main video, the soft-C/hard-C rule in English came about because that hard
/k/ sound represented by the letter c in Latin eventually became an /s/ sound in French when
it appeared before front vowels.
But this didn't happen evenly or all at once.
Initially c became palatalized to /tʃ before a front vowel, and that's still how it's
pronounced in modern Italian.
In French that /tʃ continued to change becoming a /s/ sound, leading to our soft-C/hard-C
rule in English.
But there were other situations in which that Latin /k/ sound changed to /tʃ in French
and stayed that way, as for instance when coming before the back vowel /a/.
So Latin cantare became Old French chanter and eventually English chant.
Old English, by the way had undergone a similar palatalization, so their letter c could represent
both the /k/ sound or the /tʃ sound as in the word cicen, but the Norman scribes respelled
that second sound with the letter combination ch to avoid confusion, as they were already
using the ch spelling to indicate the /tʃ sound.
The ch digraph by the way was initially invented by the Romans to represent a Greek sound that
didn't exist in Latin.
In eastern dialects of Greece the letter chi made an aspirated /kh/ sound, but in western
dialects it make a /ks/ sound, and that's what was borrowed into the Etruscan alphabet
and eventually into Latin as the letter x.
But when the Romans needed to represent that eastern Greek sound in loanwords, since they
were already using x they had to invent a letter combination to represent Greek chi,
and we still see that spelling in Greek-derived words in English.
Eventually the ch digraph was used to represent the new /tʃ sound in French.
And though as we've seen /k/ before the back vowel a became /tʃ, this was only in
the central French dialect, while in Norman French it remained as /k/, so English occasionally
has pairs of words coming from two different dialects with different pronunciations, such
as cattle and chattel, both coming through different dialects of French from the same
Latin word.
And in later French ch further developed from the /tʃ sound into a /ʃ sound, so whereas
in French loanwords that entered English in the Middle English period the ch is pronounced
/tʃ, in later French borrowings the ch spelling indicates a /ʃ sound as in chef.
So to sum all of this up you can tell when and from what dialect a Latin word made it
into English through French, depending on whether the c became a /k/, /tʃ, or /ʃ.
As a side note, the hard-G/soft-G rule shows a similar trajectory.
So the hard /g/ sound in Latin palatalized into the /dʒ sound before front vowels in
French, which we see in French loanwords like gesture.
That French /dʒ sound then continued to evolve into its current modern French sound /ʒ as
in the second g in the French loanword garage, but that change didn't happen until after
the Middle English period, when Anglo-Norman French was adding all those words to English.
So although the letter g in French loanwords can represent different sounds, /dʒ and /ʒ,
it's again a useful way of telling when the word came into English, magic in the Middle
English period and garage later on.
I'll be continuing to respond to your comments and suggestions in more Spelling Bee videos
intermittently for the next while, in between other main videos.
Thanks for all the responses!

Air Fryer Salmon Recipe - How To Cook Fish In An Air Fryer - Duration: 6:41.what's up everybody this is Lyle with No BBQ what I be doing today is going to be
a salmon filet in our air fryer the air fryer that I'm using today is a new air
fryer that was sent to me by Mikayla at new air my new air is a sister company
to Avalon Bay and they have a new air fryer out called the Magic Chef so I'm
going to be testing that out and not only did she send the air fryer she's
sending a nice little note as well saying that she was excited to see what
I could come up with in their new Magic Chef air fryer so Mikayla this is for
you anyway this is going to be a pretty basic salmon recipe we're just to be
working with our salmon fillets some butter some lemon and another company
that I bought some product from while back called miners mix we're going to be
using this in this salmon recipe as well I'm gonna leave links to both of those
companies in the description below this miners mix they sent me a few different
flavors this stuff is good right here anyway I was supposed to be doing a
marinated salmon out on the grill but we got a little bit of rain so instead of
using this salmon marinade by miners mix we're just gonna go ahead and knock that
grill recipe out later and work on this here for our recipe now anyway very
simple recipe come on in take a look we're gonna hook up some compound butter
and get it knocked out this recipe is gonna be as simple as knocking out our
compound butter spreading it around our salmon and getting it in the airfryer
like I said I'm using some of this miners mix I've used this on a couple
other recipes I happen to be using this garlic 1 which is the only bottle I've
opened so far and this stuff is awesome so we're just gonna go ahead and add
this to our butter I have some fresh dill that I have chopped up gonna go
ahead and get that in now we're just gonna take a fork and combine this up
now I know a lot of airfryer recipes tout the use of no oil or low oil things
like that you know what we're throwing that out the window on this one we're
getting plenty of buttery goodness on this so I just have a glove on here
we're just gonna go ahead and rub this in so that's good to go right there now
we're just gonna go ahead and just add some lemons on top just for some lemony
goodness optional of course you could rock this without the lemons you know
what I'm gonna go ahead and slice another little piece of lemon to put it
over there then we'll get it in the airfryer I can get the salmon in now
like the size of this this is a little bit bigger than the other air fryer that
I have so I really kind of like that now let's go ahead and get it on now there's
a bunch of different presets that you can use but I'm just gonna go ahead and
rock this manually so I'm going to go ahead and go the good thing about salmon
is you can cook like at higher temperatures there's enough fat in this
to where you're not gonna have to worry about overcooking it I'm gonna go it
360 degrees and we're gonna go for about 10 minutes we'll check it at that point
about 10 minutes and it looks like we are just about there the one good thing
about having these lemons on top as it does kind of protect the salmon from
that direct heat so I'm thinking I'm gonna go ahead and do it at another five
minutes you know let's just go with the same three in there 60 degrees
we'll go for five minutes and that should be a wrap right there it would
normally take your stove about this long just to come up to temperature so that's
one of the good things about having an air fryer we've gone this additional
five minutes this salmon is done one thing I'm going to tell you is this
lemon I'm gonna go ahead and pull this off did protect this salmon during the
cook so that's other than flavor that's probably a good reason why you would
want to go ahead and add that anyway if you're gonna be cooking at a higher
temperature like this this was a quick and easy salmon right here I'm going to
go ahead and plate this up and then we're gonna go ahead and taste it and
see if it tastes as good as it looks and smells
all right so that's a wrap that's what it looks like it looks good to me let me
remove some of this shrubbery from here and see we're looking like as far as the
taste goes I'm gonna grab something this thin part first
it's good I mean when you got a little bit of this garlic coming through on
this list ingredients got a little bit of garlic sugar slope chili powder black
pepper parsley thyme oregano get you some of this take a look at what else
they have this stuff is really good I'm gonna go for this thick part here right
quick
you know what you know
for the most part anything you do in the airfryer you do in the oven things like
that I'm gonna tell you right now this right here made now that came out any
better in the oven could have probably tasted the same but this stuff was
cooked probably in the same amount of time they were taking me just to preheat
the oven and anyway nice quick easy cleanup tastes delicious
anyway instead of running my mouth a minute say goodbye to everybody
thanks for somebody to hit me barbecue I appreciate it comment subscribe and I'm

Whatever Happened To Barbara Walters - Duration: 5:42.Barbara Walters, the esteemed American broadcast journalist, best-selling author, and iconic
TV personality, spent 25 years conducting interviews for 20/20.
After retiring from primetime, she made her way to daytime television with The View.
But then in 2014, Walters made the difficult decision to leave the show behind.
It was hard for audiences to imagine that actually happening.
Would there really come a day when you'd turn on your television and not see Walters' face?
As it turns out, yes, that's exactly what happened.
Here's what she's been up to.
On the Friday of her final week on The View,
Walters awoke extra early for an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America to discuss her
retirement plans.
The following Monday, she'd finally get to fully experience her sweet new lifestyle.
She told ABC News: "I'm going to lounge in bed until 3 in the
afternoon.
[...] I have always had a schedule.
I've always had deadlines.
I've always had things to do."
She went on to say how she was greatly looking forward to having "nothing" going on.
As a woman who worked so hard for so long, her days of lounging around and keeping her
schedule empty naturally didn't last forever.
You may not see Walters very much these days,
but she's still only partially retired.
Just as she continued to star on The View after stepping away from 20/20, Walters' career
is simply on the back burner, and she remained under contract with ABC post-retirement.
In a 2014 interview with the New York Post, Walters said:
"I'm not looking for another job, but there are other things I might want to do.
Maybe not necessarily at all.
But I like that process of creating."
While Walters wasn't planning a full retirement, she did announce that she would be stepping
away from ABC's 10 Most Fascinating People.
Fast-forward to 2015 and it became obvious that her decision didn't stick.
She said in an announcement: "I know we said last year was our last, but
there are just too many fascinating people out there [...] and you never pass up the
opportunity to interview Oprah, Neil [Patrick Harris], Chelsea [Handler], or Scarlett [Johansson]."
And of course, who could possibly do the job better than Barbara Walters?
"Be so good…just work so hard that whatever it is you become invaluable."
In November 2016, Radar Online reported that
Walters hadn't been photographed in public for over 130 days, since the premier of Woody
Allen's movie Cafe Society on July 13.
While 130 days sounds like a long time, that number has grown exponentially.
As of the making of this video, Walters still hasn't been seen, or photographed, in public.
She's also been abnormally quiet.
In October 2017, a video of Walters interviewing Corey Feldman on a 2013 episode of The View
resurfaced.
Feldman was detailing abuse experienced at the hands of powerful men in Hollywood.
Knowing what we now know about Harvey Weinstein and other members of Hollywood's elite, the
interview is painful to watch.
Walters rebuts Feldman's claims and even tells him:
"You're damaging an entire industry - I'm sorry to interrupt you, but it's a very important
serious topic."
Some felt Walters should publicly apologize to Feldman, but Walters was silent on social
media even before the clip made its rounds.
Walters generally isn't one to publicize her health struggles.
When speaking at the Breast Cancer Research Symposium and Awards luncheon in October 2014,
the then-85-year-old opened up about her personal connection to the disease.
"I discovered a small lump in my own breast… and under the expert care of Dr. Larry Norton
I had a lumpectomy."
Walters said she hadn't discussed it publicly, up until this point, as she felt there was
no reason to.
"I told few people and I am fine and no recurrence."
In 2010, Walters also underwent heart surgery.
Although she did announce her upcoming surgery plans on The View, she kept her condition
private for quite some time.
So in September 2017, when TMZ reported that Walters had become forgetful, fearful of falling,
and isolated, people were concerned.
But according to Walters' PR rep Cindi Berger, it isn't true.
When speaking with Fox News, Berger said: "I see Barbara every 2-3 weeks and she's fine.
I'm actually seeing her next week for tea."
Perhaps Walters is simply enjoying her down time, and after a lifetime of making public
appearances, just isn't feeling it anymore.
Berger didn't provide any explanation regarding what Walters has been up to, but she definitely
made one thing crystal clear: Barbara Walters is alive and well.
Despite her recent reclusiveness, Waters is
still very much a part of a big project.
After donating a generous $15 million for the building of a campus center at her alma
mater Sarah Lawrence College, the students, faculty, and staff wanted a way to thank her
properly for the donation.
"We have only words but with your gift our thanks will be shown in action.
.Your legacy will live In manifold memories and experiences."
At the outset of 2018, Sarah Lawrence College began building the $35 million "Barbara Walters
Campus Center."
Not only will the center bear her name, but it will also feature the "Barbara Walters
Gallery" of fine art, as well as "the Barbara Walters Archives and Reading Room."
Although Walters was unable to attend the groundbreaking ceremony, the 34,800 square
foot center is expected to open in fall 2019.
Hopefully Walters will make an appearance for the ribbon cutting.

(AVOID TRADITIONAL STEREOTYPES)
(AND REDEFINE THE NEW CANADA ON AN INTERNATIONAL STAGE)
(KNOWN FOR A LOCALLY INSPIRED SEA-TO-SKY COLOUR PALETTE)
(TRANSFORMATIONAL DESIGN ELEMENTS)
(AND ORGANIC NATURAL CURVES)
(DESIGN FOCUS)
When the athlete walks onto the field of play
you want them to feel like they've arrived
at the Olympic Games, and the look of the Games
communicates that.
For Vancouver 2010 it was all about trying
to define a new Canada.
You know, I think on an international stage,
there's very much, for better or worse, a kind of
stereotype of Canadians as lumberjacks,
as beaver pelts slinging, you know,
like we just drink maple syrup
and, I mean, we do, but we wanted to redefine
what the new Canada was.
So, for us the colour palette reflected that rather than
the traditional colours that you'd associate
with Canada, with red and white.
It was six designers who were pretty young,
including myself, we'd never built anything
anywhere near this scope.
Early on we were really trying to hard to show
ourselves off as being modern and progressive,
but in so doing I think things were starting to feel
a little cold and the opposite of what we were trying
to say about our country's national character, being warm.
It kind of came to a little bit of a head for us
when we took a field trip in North Vancouver.
We were all taking photos of textures around us,
and being a coastal city there's a remarkable amount
of different weather patterns that hit us at all times.
There's kind of this constant, what we ended up
calling, transformation.
And we just felt like that's Vancouver and that is Canada.
This is a place where everything's
constantly changing.
So, we started to hand draw a lot and to work with curves
and that ended up being, if you look at anything
whether it was the podiums, the torch, the medals,
they had curves and lines that connect back
to the idea of the sea and mountains that surround us.
Working from those foundational colours
we really then began to add a lot more element into it.
There was these layers of texture and then there's
these little, what Leo our design director called, spice,
where there's icons from around Vancouver
that are kind of transforming into a bizarre thing.
There is that dragonfly in the flow plane,
that combination of nature and technology coming together.
That look and that feel was the result of six or seven
minds just kind of coming together and building on top of
each other, and for better, for worse
that's kind of what it looks like.
We were always inspired by the athletes,
I think we made a real point of thinking about them
every time we went to design something.
Hopefully if we do our job right we will inspire
the athletes to try to achieve their best.
We want it to be memorable, we want you to be able to
close your eyes and remember what Vancouver looked like.
Even if you can't remember the details, just the colour
or generally how it made you feel.
When design works, it makes you feel, it creates
an emotional connection, and ultimately that's our goal.
There is absolutely something about when the torch
really arrives, everything just ignites full force.
Before I went to the Calgary '88 Games,
my brother and sister and I used to run fake torch relays
around our block in Kelowna, a small town
in British Columbia here.
So, even before I went to the Olympic Games I had this
magic sense of the torch relay, and so when I became
a lead designer on the torch relay, and the torch,
that was definitely a time and a moment where I felt like,
"Yeah, this is, I've arrived."
So, the torch relay identity is where we started.
Ultimately it came out one evening when Leo,
the design director and myself were staying late
at the office, jamming through these different
sketches and different explorations.
I had one where there was this white pathway that had
our sea-to-sky colours on either side.
And I had this flame coming off the top as if it was a flame
at the end of this snow-covered pathway.
And Leo said, "Well, what if this pathway was curved?"
And so it became a pathway with a flame at the end of it,
but it also became a torch as well,
a silhouette of a white torch.
And so, when we went to brief the industrial designers
we were collaborating with, Bombardier,
we had this foundation in place.
One of the things that we loved was the Lillehammer
torch had this flag flame where the flame exit hole
is more vertical, I thought, "Wow, isn't that beautiful
"when the torch is lit and there's a runner?"
Our design director Leo would always bring us back
to the DNA of the identity that we had created.
I can remember him talking about the bottom of the torch,
he was saying, "This should feel like a Canadian ore
"that's been worn down over time,
"like the bottom of a canoe oar"
and you can see the bottom of the torch,
it's not a straight cut, so we looked at how we can
bring the dynamic expression
that was in our identity system,
how could we bring this into a dimensional form?
We wanted people to feel like it was a piece
of the new Canada, of the new voice, of the new generation.
We knew it had to help inspire, hopefully a nation.
It's less about the thing, it's more about
what that points towards.
What does a torch point towards? It points towards
the Olympic Games.
What do the Games point towards?
For a lot of us, it's about doing our very best
at whatever we do.
It was probably the greatest feeling of my life
when I was randomly selected out of 1,600 employees
to be one of the torch-bearers.
Leo had come up to me and he put his hand on my shoulder,
and in his Spanish accent, he said, "Congratulations,
"you deserve this more than anyone," and I said,
"Thank you."
And that was the last time I ever spoke to him.
We unfortunately lost Leo just months before the Games,
very unexpectedly and tragically,
and that was the biggest blow
and test of our emotions and ability to keep going on.
It was unimaginable, to be honest, but we also obviously
felt "We have to finish this job for him,"
at the level of perfection that he demanded of everything,
which was very high, and try to be inspired by
what he had brought to the project.
Leo was a great leader because he was passionate,
he had the energy, but most importantly he was a friend.
You know, on a human level,
design is about human connections,
it's about human connections with your audience
it's about human connections as a design team,
and Leo was more of a friend than a boss,
and I think that's what allowed our team to be successful,
was that we had that camaraderie.
And his passion and his determination for excellence
was contagious, like, it's not about a meal voucher,
this has to be the best meal voucher we can make it.
And that is something I've carried with me in my life,
It's not about just running the torch, it's everything
around you, you have one moment, you have one chance,
you have to make the most of it, so for me
running that torch was all about
running the torch with Leo.
