Hello everyone !
You do not know me yet so let me introduce myself
I'm Lia, your new columnist for Little Point Geek!
Great fan of fantasy novels, bit-bed
and anything that can gravitate around
not to mention science fiction
I will try to show you the works I liked
at my favorite publisher: Bragelonne.
So, yes, I know
you are telling you that the news has cracked a little So, yes, I know
because all she has in her library is Milady
but as Milady is a Bragelonne label
I'm fine, I still have a bit of room left before losing my mind.
But enough about me, let's talk about the book
that I will introduce you today, 2 small seconds
Sianim: The imprint of Patricia Briggs' demon
Patricia Briggs wanted to be a horse when she was small
and when she realized that it was not really possible,
she drowned her disappointment in all the books she found on the horses.
Then, thanks to her sister, she quickly passed
to the novels of André Norton, writer of fantasy and SF
then to almost everything that fell into his hands.
It's thanks to her college colleague that she understood that
even the common man could write a novel
which literally changed his life.
Literally, literary ... You have it?
Yeah, well, sorry, let's go back.
When her husband was transferred to Chicago
and that his baby finally understood the power
enchanting nap
his first novel: Masks is born.
It was in 1993
Great year in passing!
And today, it is, I believe, its 25th novel.
So let's talk about the demon fingerprint of the Sianim series
I read once that read the first page
of a novel was a very good way
to be aware of the style of the author and the mood of the novel.
Since I've applied this rule, I've never been disappointed.
So, let's get right to the point!
"Sitting on a low wall, in the shadow of an alley,
Sham was busy putting on his boots.
Around her,
the darkness was so deep that the brightness of the moon
could not pierce them.
A sea breeze stroked her hair
and she took a deep breath of fresh air.
Here, on the heights of the Finisterre hills,
even the sea had a different smell.
Like the nobles of Southern Woods before them,
the Cybellian conquerors had chosen to settle far from the docks.
In Purgatory, the slum district where she lived,
in the western part of the city,
the winds from the ocean carried the smell of dead fish,
garbage and despair.
She stood up
and smoothed with a light hand the silk of his messenger's tunic,
to make sure that his black and gray outfit
would fall properly.
She had to go twice to fluff her sleeves
opaque of his costume,
in order to hide the suspicious bumps
who could have revealed the presence of the instruments of his profession.
It was early in the season,
and winter had not yet settled.
The silk would be hot enough,
if it does not stay still for too long,
but she was still happy that her pants
cut into a slightly thicker fabric.
After tightly rolling her other clothes,
she hid them between the low branches of a tree
which adorned the ornamental garden
located at the back of the residence of a rich merchant. "
I like and I admire a lot
the faculty of some authors
to immerse yourself in their universe
in a few paragraphs,
to give you a nice amount of information
without really looking.
This is for me the proof that a universe is really worked
and that there is a good chance that the book is good.
Here it is clearly the case!
In a few lines, we learn
the name of the main character, a specific place,
a global place, the time of the year
and even the political situation of the country.
All this just having the impression of
follow the thoughts of the heroine.
The pitch is nice, although we have
not enough information on the 4th cover
"When a mysterious assassin attacks
the nobility of the Southern Woods, Lord Kerim
uses the services of Sham, thief and witch,
to unmask him.
Pretending to be the mistress of Kerim,
the magician leads the investigation behind
the high walls of Finisterre Castle.
But his opponent shows demonic skill ...
To defeat, Sham needs allies,
but how to distinguish false friends from true traitors? "
Below the synopsis, a criticism.
Well, you saw, there are 2
but I'm not here to read you the whole book
I leave you this pleasure!
This review is from the Midwest Book Review
(excuse the accent)
and says, "Patricia Briggs is a born storyteller"
Yeah, clearly!
I'm almost sad to have waited
so many years before putting his nose in his works.
The universe is simple, without being simplistic,
and there is an explanation for many things.
We learn for example how magic works in this universe,
it does not appear that way when the characters need it.
It has its codes, its limits, its uses
and that's exactly what makes a good fantasy book for me.
Everything is fluid in this novel,
the twists are not really predictable,
and I had a disconcerting ease
to slip into the skin of the characters.
I had that constant feeling of being in Sham's mind.
By the way I put at least 3 or 4 chapters
to realize that it was written in the 3rd person!
The only little complaint I could make,
it's the slight lack of character background
Be careful, I'm not saying that they have none,
I just think they miss a little bit of depth.
But it's really quibble!
I have not read the other books in the Sianim series yet,
so it is possible that it is corrected in the others.
Yes, I know, I do not have the right to complain
if I do not start from the beginning but what do you want
I like to moan!
To conclude, I have only one thing to say to you:
read it,
and let yourself be carried away by Patricia Briggs.
If you have already read it,
tell me what you thought about it in the comments
and if you have not read it,
Bah ... read it!
And tell me what you thought about it in the comments!
Believe me it's worth it!
I'm done for today
and waiting to see you again for a new column,
you can find me on my Youtube channel Lia Cause
where I speak absolutely no books.
But I promise you, without any objectivity,
it's interesting and sometimes a little funny.
But it's up to you to judge!
With that, I make you kisses and tell you very quickly!
Chao!
