Welcome you made it to the last episode of the Brazil series super excited to
share some reflection points on the culture and what it was like while we
were down there the first thing is however you can close the language
barrier if you don't know the local language that is key this would have
been impossible without technology I've mentioned here that Skinner used to have
to literally write something it would go across the ocean we live in a world that
is so different than the times of say Skinner when he was looking to plan
something right he would write a letter with a pen and paper he would lick that
thing up and put it in the mail it would go over the sea what are these filled with
water it would go over someone I don't know if those horse I don't know if it
was carriage I don't this horse or carriage or train or car at that point
but it got to whoever it was intended to be they did the same thing licked it up
and sent it back on their way it went all the way back across the damn ocean
just for them to be able to have one correspondence I can do that with social
media today at a scale that is completely unfathomable it would take up
to a year and a half to plan just one trip overseas meanwhile how amazing the
google translator app wasn't just like it's kind of your technology cusp and
just open up so many possible conversations that we were we're unable
to have with people prior but it was also really interesting to see how
little communication you actually needed to share so one of the days we jumped
into a workout routine that was on the beach just as something to kind of keep
the you know keep the blood flow and get a little bit of movement and stuff and
we didn't have to communicate with the guy that was leading the instruction at
all he was able to just point Daniela and her husband Carlos were able to
teach us when it comes to dancing and how we kind of do some of the local
things around there and again there was no shared words out of a little bit
there something like Carlos and I developed
this sort of bromance without having any actual shared common languages but you
felt like someone became your brother in an instant because of the shared values
the things that we all wanted to accomplish together and just being on
the same page of just looking to try to make the world in the leave a better
place some other things that we noticed it's not as Americanized which is great
that is you're not finding the same food chains all over the place you could find
those sort of things if you wanted to but it was it was easy to not run into
those things the most one of the most similar things were able to find was a
craft beer set up on one of the streets randomly a lot of people really admired
the American culture and I think for many reasons we have an extremely strong
system set up here and it's very different which I'll get into in a
minute but Megan I also told him that we're not the typical folks they're like
we always take a skeptical critical eye of things I think the large theme was
like we aren't and shouldn't be thought of as the best country ever like we are
a human race we happen to be separated by these different countries we all have
our strengths and weakness is it's more so how can we learn from each other and
build something that's even better in our local communities. Now I may be taking
that a little bit for granted I think I'm humble enough to realize that but I
don't know correct me if I'm wrong down below. Safety was very interesting
there it's a whole different level concern than where I've been in most
areas of the world in my neck of the woods particularly that I'm just used to
in the United States not that you can't point those sort of things but a good
example is the day that we landed there was a prison break for some hundred and
eighty inmates that then went on a spree jumping from from police station a
police station a police station until everything was shut down some of the
criminals were picked up and a lot just remain on the streets. After 11:00 p.m.
there is no stopping at this stop lights being like the red lights and the stop signs
you just kind of go in this like flashing kind of communication with
other people's and time it correctly because it is too dangerous to stop and
you will encounter most likely some sort of problems if you stop on the streets
this is in particular areas I think remember I have a very limited scope
here where we're at but just some things that I am comfortable
sharing the day happened. Another interesting thing that I'm not used to
is I was the one in the center of the groups (at times) usually since I had the camera
gear in my backpack very atypical just from what I'm used to when you're
walking with a group of folks late at night it was very easy to get around
with the right knowledge and it was very safe to walk around with the right
people in the right places I had no real concerns during the daytime whatsoever
one thing for Americans to take away here is there's a very different level of
social issues that you can see on that in that country from the prison break to
the drug corruption stories to the children that actually came up to us
begging for money that had some sort of clear addiction going on I'm talking
about like eight nine years old - the living arrangements not being what many
of us the u.s. experience but despite all of that it is amazing how much these
people care how in the vibe and the knowledge and just the passion that they
were able to share with us it home with me makes me appreciative of what I have
it makes me just want to work that much harder to bring whatever I can to the world to make it that much better.
So Brazil on a whole I would go back - two thumbs up amazing experience that people made it
what it was finding the right people is always key when you're doing these sort of
things Daniela, Carlos, Roni, Megan it's not
