Told from the perspective of a central pup, Bailey, "A Dog's Purpose" explores the meaning of life over the course of several canine reincarnations.
Bailey, who's given doggone delightful voice by "Frozen" snowman Josh Gad, lives out roles as a boy's (K.J. Apa) red retriever, a lonely cop's (John Ortiz) German Shepherd partner, a student's tubby corgi and a lost mutt whose reunion with his owner (Dennis Quaid) brings the story sweetly full circle.
Like W. Bruce Cameron's novel it's based on, the film he co-wrote depicts dogs as loyal and affectionate teachers who show people the way, ease troubles and fetch joy.

In the meantime, Bailey and company make their own discoveries. "Might there," says the pooch, "be more bacon?"
The film is both heartwarming and soul-shattering. Its theme of an unbreakable bond between man and his best friend is reminiscent of "My Dog Skip," "Homeward Bound" and "Old Yeller."
With each new family for each puppy reincarnation, there's an emotional issue at play that is alleviated by the simple presence of a dog and a lesson learned because of the animal.

It's upsetting, then, to know that one of these intelligent and trusting animals was forced into a scary spot during the filming of one stunt. Some members of the audience might have a bone to pick with that decision.
Nonetheless, anyone who's ever suffered the loss of a pet will know the on-screen heartache is real and be comforted by this afterlife theory. Because, who knows? And maybe Bailey's right when the mutt says that "trying to make sense of life is a waste of time."
