- So you're all set.
You know what your next big thing is.
You know how you're going to unleash
your badassery on the world.
But there's this one small problem:
you're terrified.
Today I want to talk to you about my seven easy steps
for thinking your way through whatever fear
you're experiencing right now so that you can
actually make that next big thing happen
as soon as humanly possible.
Step number one: name that fear.
I know, not the sexiest thing in the whole wide world.
Not even the most original, but it matters.
You need to bust out a pen and paper
and write down what are you actually afraid of.
Maybe it's the fear of failure.
Oh my God, you might fail.
Or you're afraid of success.
Lot of people are afraid not of actually succeeding
but what comes with that,
Are my friends going to think I'm a douchebag?
and all that kind of stuff.
Or maybe you're afraid of embarrassing yourself.
If you actually go out into the world
and start telling people,
"This is what I'm going to do next,"
and you don't follow through, like you didn't last time,
you're going to make an ass out of yourself,
and you don't want to do that.
Maybe you're just afraid of the unknown, like
I don't know what I don't know yet,
so that terrifies me,
so I'm not even going to start.
Or maybe you're afraid you just going to disappoint
yourself yet again.
Whatever it is, I want you to name that fear.
Write it down in a complete sentence.
"I am afraid of blank."
There's power in stating what it is.
Step number two.
Now that you know what the heck you're afraid of,
we need to go ahead and let your imagination run wild.
You see, you're already feeling all this doom and gloom
about the tact that that fear could possibly happen,
so let's go there.
If you have in your mind this next big thing,
this big goal, this dream that you want to do,
this piece of badassery that you're ready to tackle,
and you have this fear,
what's the worst case scenario if that fear comes true?
Really allow your imagination to go there.
Oh my gosh, if I do this, if I tackle this next thing,
like I take on YouTube for example,
and I'm a failure at it,
then I'm going to be living under a bridge.
Allow your imagination to go as far as
it's going to go and then look at it realistically.
If I fail at YouTube I will not be living under a bridge,
but what will it mean?
What's the worst case scenario?
Allow yourself to go there and jot it down.
Step number three.
That's one side of the coin,
time for the other side, people.
What is the best case scenario?
You know what this next big thing is.
You know what this badass thing is that you want.
What if everything goes your way?
Nobody does this.
They allow their imagine to go
to that negative horrible place
but they don't allow themselves to think,
what if everything goes my way?
What if this works?
What if my dream happens?
What would that mean?
What would that look like?
What could be that best possible scenario?
Jot that down.
Alright, step number four.
Now that we've looked at both sides of the coin
of the best case and worst case scenario,
now I want to look at, in these next three steps,
your role in it where you have responsibility.
Steps four, five, and six
are control, influence, and no control.
Where in this situation, where in this goal,
do you have complete control?
You have complete control over a heck of a lot
more than you think you do, my friend.
Think about it.
You have complete control over how much effort
you put into this.
You have complete control over your attitude about it.
You have complete control over the resources
that you put in place, things like that.
You want to think through the things
you have complete control over.
It's going to give you a huge amount of confidence.
Step five is all about influence.
Sure, you can't control absolutely everything.
You don't have complete control over everything,
but you have a heck of a lot more influence
than you usually give yourself credit for.
See, my clients do this all the time.
They think, I have complete control of these three things
and no control over anything else.
BS, my friends.
You have a lot of influence.
Using the YouTube example, you might not
know all of the grand influencers
but you have a lot of influence
over whether or not you make those connections
by how you show up and reach out and support them.
What are the different ways that you can exude
some influence over your badassery
even if you don't have complete control
over that particular aspect?
Step six, six
is where do you have no control?
Let's go there.
Let's go ahead and get that piece of information,
because really this is all about collecting data
for these fears that you were feeling
a little earlier.
Now we're going to go ahead and allow yourself to note
where do I have no control?
For example, you have no control over
what happens in world events,
and you have no control of what
somebody else is going to think.
Let's be real,
although you might have influence.
Yeah, I argue you have influence.
But there are some areas
where you're going to be able to identify
this next big thing that I want
and that I'm going after.
There are some things that I just have zero control over,
zero influence over.
Jot them down.
Because again, that's a piece of data
that you want to know about.
Step number seven.
Now that you've gone through
and you've thought this through from every angle,
you've looked at the worst case scenario of this fear,
the best case scenario of this fear,
you've decided here's where I have complete control,
here's where I have influence,
and here's where I have no control,
looking at all that data,
number seven is: what are you going to do about it?
Now instantly you're going to be able to say,
"Huh, the very next thing,
"the next priority, the next step toward
"this piece of badassery is what?"
You're going to be able to figure that out
right now in the moment
because you've laid out all the data.
Now pop quiz, little bonus question.
How scary is that fear anymore?
Most of the people that have gone through this experience
find that that fear diminishes by at least 63%
Did I make up that number?
Absolutely.
But here's the thing.
By just analyzing your fear
and putting pen to paper,
looking at it from every frickin' angle,
you realize that that fear
is that voice in the back of your head,
that chick I call Hilda.
Hilda is making you afraid of it.
She's making you feel really big and scary
because she's putting into your brain these thoughts
that this piece of badassery,
this next big thing that you know
want to do, that you know you want to have
can't be yours because you're scared.
The fact that you're scared means one thing:
this matters to you.
You wouldn't be afraid if it didn't matter.
I mean it.
I'm never afraid to go to the grocery store,
though I really hate it,
but that's because it doesn't really matter.
But I am afraid of the things, the big things,
the big exciting tasks and goals that are ahead of me.
Those scare the crap out of me because they matter.
It's your body's way of saying,
"Hello, wake up stupid, this matters to you."
You could let the fear win
by not actually thinking it all the way through
and just feeling it and sitting with it,
and allow that to sabotage you.
Hilda wins, she hangs out with you with bon bon,
she's so happy.
Or you could do something about it.
Step seven: do something about it.
I want to hear from you.
What is keeping you up at night?
What fear are you feeling?
Fill out this worksheet, these seven steps,
and tell me what are the seven steps for you?
I can't wait to hear from each and every one of you.
I promise I will respond to every single comment.

Okay, let's do this again.
Hey, badasses.
Today I want to talk to you about (clearing throat),
that's just boring.
I will get my nerves together.
I don't know what I'm saying.
Okay, (clapping) (clearing throat).
I can do this, I can do this (popping noises).
Today I want to share with you a incredibly
foolprooth, foolproof technique.
Try this again.
