Youtube daily report Jul 26 2018

Film is definitely not dead. Today on the slanted lens, we're gonna take a look at transparency film versus print film

When would you use it? Why would you choose it? So let's get started soon

We can do we've got a roll here that we actually shot earlier. Let's preview it

I'm not seeing anything. No, we must have something wrong. We will shoot some more

Hi, this is JP Morgan hi, and I'm mayor mayor's here to help me today to compare transparency film to print film

No, you cannot preview your transparency film by unrolling it that exposes it and ruins it. So don't do that

What is transparency film? How does it compare to c41 or print film?

And then really why would you choose to use transparency film? What are the situations you would like to use it in?

What is the dynamic range of transparency and how does it compare to print film because they are very very different

But there are some situations you're going to want to use transparency and if you love film and it's gonna look fabulous

So let's get started. See we can do

Hey

We're back from Canada. So let's start was our over and under test

Portrait has a great latitude for being over and under Pro via and Velvia. Do not so there's our first exposure

It's interesting looking at the skin on these. The portrait does not have as prettiest skin color

I don't think as a pro via I like the color of the probe yet on the skin

I think the Velvia is a little warm on the skin, but that's our normal exposure - one stop the

Portrait still looks about the same Pro via and the Velvia both looked about the same. They don't look bad at all

Now we go to - two stops, you see the transparency film the pro via and the Velveeta

They just start to fall apart. The Velvia is starting to lose shadow detail completely

We just have a pasty look in the pro via

So now if we go to - three stops, this is where we really start to see it

We almost have nothing with the Velvia. I mean, we don't have I mean the blacks had just blocked up completely

We're extremely blocked up with the pro via but the portress still not so terrible

I mean it could it's really it's holding its own so - reporters not bad Pro via is really pasty

And Velvia is just gone. Now we go. Plus it's really interesting to see what happens

So here's the three of them portrait is looking fine Pro via already is blocking up in the highlights same with Velvia

We're blocking up in the highlights completely

We've lost the shadow to any detail in the building on the left both in the pro via in the Velvia

So when we go to plus two that's when I think this gets really interesting. It's kind of funny actually

Portraits still looks great. We've got detail in the highlights. We're holding a highlight detail in the building on the Left hand-side

We still see some of the brick there, but look at the pro via the highlights are gone. There is nothing in the building

There's almost nothing in her dress. The Velvia is even worse

I mean, there's just nothing we're starting to just see the blackness in there

We can see all of our black detail and nothing else when we go to plus three it gets even worse

Almost we almost only see her eyes in the Velvia and the pro via

I mean we still have a usable image there

We still have detail in

The building bricks on the left-hand side and the highlights her dress still has detail but the pro via Velvia are gone

They're like dong. I don't know where they've gone, but they're gone. They're gone gone gone

that's why for wedding running gun kind of situations that portrait just makes so much more sense because

You can miss your exposure by a stopper. So there are two stops and you're still gonna be okay?

So let's take a look at how these three different films look with skin. Here's all three of them and it's interesting

I don't love the portrait as much as I do the pro via

I like Pro via I think Pro via is the best transparency film out there because

It gives you great shadow detail and it holds the highlight detail and it has a nice warmish tone in the skins

Which I really like now that warmer tone when you underexpose or overexpose

It starts to build becomes more magenta

But when you're on with your exposure you get a really beautiful skin tone with this and now Velvia

I don't like val vias with skin because it's a punchy punchy film

There are times though when Velvia really makes a lot of sense because it's so punchy because it has so much contrast

when you're in a really shadow situation that

Velvia looks great because it takes whatever highlights are there and it is going to amplify them and it looks fabulous

But as far as skin goes, I think that pro-v looks incredible. Just a great look

So let's look at the stuff we shot in Banff National Park. That was a lot of fun

This is where transparency really is ideal because it gives you vivid color

Most people that are shooting transparency film. These days are shooting Scenic's

Because you have the time to make sure exposures right you have the and then you get great color

So let's look at this all I did on this I get a negative 0.75

exposure

Adjustment because they were all a little bit bright. So the portrait is still a little flat

It's not very contrasting. You. Don't get great blacks

It just feels a little pasty overall easily corrected though. The pro via has a little stronger color. The greens are nice

they're much nicer than the portrait but

And the Blues are nice get a great color. You get a little see that little magenta in the sand

It's easy to see that starting to build and then we go to Velvia in this image

Which is brightly lit direct Sun on this is really not a high dynamic range here

You're not looking at deep shadows or bright whites

that Velvia looks fabulous because the greens are nice and the Blues are beautiful and you just

There's a little bit of green in that color

But it's just a great look now if I take these and I just give them a little bit of contrast and I go into

D haze and I'll give about a plus 50 D haze

Which I love what that does to an image like this. Then this is what we get much nicer in that portrait

It's just now starting to look like an image, but look how the pro via sings

I mean the pro via is giving you sharp beautiful colors. The greens are nice

The blue is wonderful saying with the Velvia and again though that Velvia is a little darker a little deeper in the shadows

You see more contrast so you can see the difference in those two, but just beautiful scenic there

so let's go on and take a look at a high dynamic range situation and this is when you've got

deep shadows and you've got white White's I've got clouds and I've got deep shadow and this is a tough situation for

Any film but as you would expect the portrait really is is holding all of the detail in the whites

It's opened up in the shadows. So you see detail in the shadows. The pro via is actually pretty nice. It's looking pretty good

I can get

Detail in the clouds I can get detail in the shadows now I did anything

I could to recover these to make him look right so I like the probe

I like to look at the pro via better than the then I do the portrait

I should have taken the yellow out of that damage. It was a mistake on my part

All I need to do is add about five points of magenta or some cyan and I could have cleaned that up very nicely

Look at the the Velvia

This is where Velvia really struggles because that Velvia

There is no detail in the shadows and there is no detail in the whites

It's so contrasting to begin with when you get into a high dynamic range situation

It doesn't have the range to hold it at all and it just falls apart

that's why Pro via for me is kind of the go-to transparency film because if you're in a high contrast situation,

It's going to hold the shadows and the highlights much better. I like the color better than what you get with portrait

I just feel like it gives you more vivid color. So here's an image. We took a peyto lake again

I've now a couple of Corrections here

I've got a minus

1.25 exposure and I've got a plus 50 D haze on each one of these and it's just interesting to see we get a good

Image with the portrait, but I don't like the color

I don't think you can get the to really be as vivid as you wanted

It has that kind of pasty look some people love that because it has that vintage kind of the flaw of the film

Look, you know but look at the pro via the pro via is a much stronger color again

You see a little bit of that magenta in there and also Velvia Velveeta has a beautiful strong color great contrast

Look at the blue of the lake in that Velveeta when you're in a full sunlight situation with Velveeta. It looks really good

It looks fabulous

We're gonna jump back to Pasadena now and just take a look at some of these films shooting mayor and I shot too much of

This stuff I just had such a good time. There's the three in hard direct Sun. I was shocked at how the portrait

Reacted to that. I expected the shadows to be more open, you know, but you see the whites they're holding in that portrait

They're starting to lose it in the pro via and they're really losing it in the Velvia now

This is where that Velvia really does. Well, look at this. This is open shade. There's really no Sun on her whatsoever

It's just a little bit of highlight from the top

And so the portrait is really pasty, but it has that vintage look that is so beautiful

When you look at the probe you look at that probe

Eeeh, that's a beautiful skin tone beautiful color

and even the Velvia the Velveeta is great because it takes whatever little highlight is there and kind of

Amplifies it and it looks wonderful. I thought these were really fun fun images to shoot. Here's the same thing

we're in that open shade portrait is

Great film but it's just kind of pasty I could work on these and make that look a lot better

But look at that Pro via out of the box just it has a great color

I'm just used to that look because I shot transparency my entire career that Pro via is a beautiful film. It's open. She looks fabulous

Velvia in this situation because we're in direct shade looks great as well. The skin tone isn't as great on here

I love this next one

This next one is one of my favorite cuz you got the background flying way out of focus you got highlights from overhead

But she's in the shade, but look at that portrait really does well here because it's holding all of those highlights

The shadows are not blocking up

The pro via is also doing quite well

But her shoulders blowing out her hair starting to blow out and in the Velvia, her hair is just gone

But this just has such a transparency. Look it has that old vintage transparency. Look, I love this

Look a lot theirs back out on the street again

We just get such richer color what the to transparency films versus the portrait of the neg film and the last one here

Just beautiful color in the shade. The dress pops are so much red in that dress and that's just straight out of the gate

I'm not doing anything to these. So there's the last one that open shade looks great same result

We get a little pasty with the portrait Pro via has beautiful color

We start to block up and lose our highlights

But it's hard with transparency film when you're shooting people and scenes to keep your exposure

Correct, not miss your exposure and secondly do not have your highlights or shadows block up

That's why strobes are so important when you're using

transparency film because you've got to have the ability to overpower the Sun and to open up the shadows and to get everything so that

You are in a very very narrow dynamic range

That's the only way you can make transparency film look good

But when you do it looks fabulous it has that great transparency vintage look

So there's a look at those three film stocks portrait 160 the pro via 100 and the Velvia 100

My favorite transparency film. The one that I think is the best for most situations is Pro via

I mean the the color is good you're holding more of the dynamic range. You're holding the highlights better

It's not as contrasted as well via the portrait. I think you can get a great look out of it

It has more of a painterly kind of a soft look, which is very nice

You can correct that and make that look really good

So it's not a bad film

But the advantage of that is that you can miss your exposure by so far and still be okay. I mean really?

Okay, whereas with Pro B or Velvia?

you've got to be right on with your exposure a stop and it's starting to hurt a lot and

You've got to be right on with regards to the way the scene is set up

You can't have it be too bright or too dark. You really got to control the lighting

So when I shot all of this transparency film for years

We control the lighting we put up huge silks to soften the light out

We would have strobe heads to be able to bring up the shadows, you know

You did all kinds of things to make sure that your dynamic range was very narrow and that transparency film would look fabulous

But when it's fabulous, it's beautiful. It truly is so I hope you found that interesting, but we found it useful

Get out there and shoot some film. Shoot some transparency post it on our Facebook group

Ted: Ah. There you are son.

Fred: Oh um. Hello Daddy.

Ted: Hello. Yes I suddenly realize I never taught you about online safety.

Fred: Online safety?

Ted: Yes it's just important as personal... as real life safety I mean.

Fred: Oh no don't you worry Daddy I'm very safe when I'm online

Fred: When I go online and I'm very careful and and I make sure I don't go anywhere that's dangerous

Fred: And um yeah especially so I don't look at things like volcanoes

Ted: Um yes that's good yes.

Fred: Yes and um what else would you not want me to do?

Fred: Oh yes I definitely never ever ever ever look at like fail videos or anything

Fred: like that no no

Ted: That's good son but I'll need to access your browser settings to make sure you can't access them even if you wanted to.

Fred: oh no don't you worry about that Daddy I've already enabled parental controls anyway

Fred: yeah because I'm such a good boy

Ted: Yes well good boy son

Fred: Yes you don't need to worry whatsoever and you better not look at my browser history.

Ted: What about social media?

Ted: I hope you're not on Facebook or anything like that.

Fred: Oh you already know I am on Facebook daddy remember? Because Kevin Spacey invited me to his gentleman's group.

Ted: Oh god I completely forgot about that.

Fred: Yes I've been on Facebook for a very long time actually.

Fred: Since well at least a couple of years now.

Ted: What!?

Fred: Yes and I've got thousands of friends

Ted: What!

Fred: yeah and they're all really great well

Fred: Although weirdly easy most of them seems to be like forty year old men

Ted: What!

Fred: Yeah yeah but they're all really nice to me. They talk to me about things and are like

Fred: "Hey little boy. How are you?"

Fred: "Would you like to come over to my house?"

Ted: No!

Fred: Do you want some sweeties again? Ted: No!

Fred: But I have learnt about that yeah and I say no thank you mr. man I don't want any sweeties.

Fred: But then they are like "could you send me a picture?"

Fred: And I'm like "Oh I'm great at taking pictures" Ted: What!

Fred: So sometimes I send them like nice pictures like I'm smiling

Fred: sometimes they...

Fred: One man wanted to know what the bath was like he was like

Fred: "Can you take a picture in the bath?"

Fred: And I was like "well I guess so" Ted: What!

Fred: No don't worry Daddy. I just sent him a picture of the bath and then he was a bit confused

Ted: Oh.

Fred: But then I sent him a picture of me in the bath and he was very happy

Ted: What! No!

Fred: Sometimes but they're very nice about it.

Fred: Sometimes they send me money.

Ted: Money!?

Fred: Sometimes they are like

Fred: Little boy. Can you take some pictures of yourself and then I'll give you some money?

Fred: And that's why I have lots of money now

Ted: No No No No son.

Ted: I'm getting you off Facebook immediately.

Fred: One man paid me a pound for 20 photos of me.

Ted: What?

Fred: Yes so much money daddy. You think of all the things I could buy with a pound.

Fred: I could buy like some sweeties or I could buy some crayons

Ted: No son! bang bang

Ted: I'm going to... I am banning you immediately from Facebook

Ted: I'm afraid you have no idea what you're doing here.

Fred: Oh no don't you worry daddy. All those people are fine.

Fred: They're really good friends. Sometimes they were talking about having like a meet-up in real life

Fred: and about 20 of the men wanted to meet with me at one time.

Fred: Just me and then 20 of these forty year old men.

Fred: And they said something about like like cottaging or something

Fred: and then like I think that's where we all go and stay in the cottage

Fred: and then something about like glory holes

Ted: WHAT!

Fred: They said I would be inside the glory hole Ted: No!

Fred: But that sounds amazing because I really like glory.

Fred: I wonder if it's a bit like um you know like when you win a war

Fred: Or something like that. Ted: No! No! Freddy!

Ted: Freddy! Freddy! Fred: So I think we're going to be doing something where I'm gonna be celebrated by twenty men who are all

Ted: Freddy? Fred: Yes?

Ted: This is not good. They want to exploit you.

Fred: No no no Daddy. They're not gonna exploit me. What are you talking about?

Fred: They just said something about um er.

Fred: Yes they said something about...

Fred: Giving me a golden shower or something.

Ted: What!

Fred: But that sounds like they want to give me lots of money or something. I'm so excited. Ted: NO!

Fred: It sounds like I won something or something.

Ted: NO Freddy. Come here.

Fred: Ooh! And one man offered me a facial

Ted: WHAT!

Fred: Yeah a facial daddy. He said I could go round to his house and he give me a facial.

Fred: And I'm like look I'm getting all sorts of free treatments and like beauty treatments and stuff

Fred: All offered to me by these lovely 40 year old men.

Ted: No! Freddy! Stop!

Ted: These men are grooming you

Fred: Oh yes yes. They're really nice. I quite like grooming Ted: NO!

Ted: Grooming is not good in this context.

Fred: What do you mean? I need all of my fur groomed.

Fred: Look at me. You never comb me

Ted: You don't need to be combed.

Fred: Yes I do. To keep my hair nice and lovely and that's what the men say. They say

Fred: Ooh you have really lovely fur little boy and I'm like

Fred: Oh thank you so much and they're like oh I'd like to groom you and I'm like

Fred: Well you can. You can groom me as much as you like if we make my furrow nice

Fred: And then you can send me more compliments

Ted: No no!

Fred: And they give me lots of compliments so now I just take pictures of myself and put it on Instagram

Fred: and then all of the forty year old men send me likes.

Ted: No Freddy!

Ted: I'm getting you off right now! I'm gonna go and...

Fred: Oh you're getting me off!

Fred: Actually one of the men said that he wanted to get me off

Ted: NOOOOO!

Fred: Yes but I was like why would I want to get off on Facebook? That would be weird so I didn't.

Ted: Well good. No this is not good.

Ted: I'm deleting your Facebook account right now.

Fred: Oh well I don't think you can do that because you haven't got the password

Ted: Well I I'm contacting Facebook immediately and getting this sorted.

Fred: [Fred] Good luck with that. Yeah

Fred: Good luck to speaking to anyone at Facebook

Fred: That'll be the day. Ted: You are violating their terms of service.

Fred: Oh yes I'm sure they will. I'm sure they'll really listen to you.

Fred: They don't listen to the bloody American government but they're still gonna listen to you aren't they daddy? Oh I'm scared.

Ted: Yes they are.

Ted: You're too young to use Facebook. You're meant to be 13 or older but you're not 13.

Ted: You're like five.

Fred: They don't know that. I said I was 13. [Laughs]

Ted: I will show Facebook you are not.

Ted: I'm gonna go and contact them right now. This is ridiculous.

Fred: No! Daddy. Please don't delete my Facebook!

Fred: Oh but then I can't speak to Harvey Weinstein anymore. Ohh!

Fred: I love Harvey Weinstein so much and I love Kevin Spacey.

Meghan Markle Channels Pippa Middleton, Using Same $70 Clutch Kate's Sister Took to Wimbledon - Duration: 3:02.

Talk about coming in clutch!  Meghan Markle has recently been embracing the clutch, which is also Kate Middleton's handbag of choice

But she didn't need to look far for purse inspiration while stepping out with husband Prince Harry at the Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup on Thursday

The 36-year-old paired her midi-length denim dress by Carolina Herrera with a basket clutch by J

Crew, a perfect choice for the sporty summer event.  Royal fans have seen this adorable (and affordable — it's currently on sale for just $60!) accessory before

Kate's younger sister Pippa Middleton carried the clutch last month at Wimbledon

In fact, the 34-year-old mom-to-be — who is pregnant with her first child, due in October — chose the purse not once, but twice while attending the tennis tournament

On July 5, Pippa carried the bag while sporting a white eyelet Anna Mason dress with ruffle sleeves

She used it again while attending Wimbledon a week later, where she wore a boho-chic dress with billowing sleeves and changed up her usual simple, no-fuss hairstyle with a fun new updo — a low ponytail with two French braids running along each side

It's unclear if they've been swapping style tips recently, but Meghan and Pippa have definitely crossed paths before

Although she skipped Pippa's May 2017 wedding ceremony, Harry brought his then-girlfriend to the evening reception at the Middleton family's home in nearby Buckleberry

A source told PEOPLE that Markle stayed in London (about and hour-and-a-half away from the ceremony in Englefield) during the church service and was going to be picked up by Harry after the morning service

Just one day before Pippa and her husband, James Matthews, celebrated their one-year anniversary, they attended Meghan and Harry's nuptials at St

George's Chapel.  The world's most famous bridesmaid wore a mint green and pink floral "Hepburn" silk dress by The Fold

Though the outfit drew comparisons to a can of Arizona green tea with ginseng and honey online, it was certainly coordinated with the color of the day: green was chosen for Queen Elizabeth and mother-of-the-bride Doria Ragland's wedding ensembles as well

Life at the Lab: Zoom Without the BOOM! - Duration: 1:49.

>> We've had supersonic airplanes in the past, like the Concorde,

but they had some problems with sonic boom.

[ SONIC BOOM ]

Any airplane that goes faster than sound makes a sonic boom.

It's a really loud sound that you hear on the ground

when a supersonic airplane flies overhead.

[ SONIC BOOM ]

But it's just so loud that it's really just not

acceptable for people to hear on a regular basis.

Supersonic flight over land is actually prohibited in the United States.

[ SONIC BOOM ]

What we need is, we need airplanes that are quieter for one thing.

But we also need to work with the FAA to figure out what

level of noise is actually going to be acceptable to people.

What's the range of how people respond?

So we're working with the FAA, essentially, to come up with a standard.

Essentially a certification standard that says,

'The airplane has to be <this> quiet, and then it's allowed to fly over land.'

So we said, 'Can we build an experimental aircraft that can do this job?'

And eventually we came down to the Low Boom Flight Demonstrator aircraft.

>> This shape is really designed to generate a certain sonic boom

that we believe should be acceptable to the general public.

And what we have to do is actually build it, fly it and

take that data and prove that that's actually true.

It's a partnership between NASA and Lockheed.

It involves not just Langley, but all the Aero centers.

So Glenn, Ames and Armstrong have important parts of this as well.

So it's really a combined NASA Aeronautics effort with our prime contractor,

Lockheed, and our engine provider, General Electric, to make sure

this aircraft comes together on schedule and meets our requirements.

>> We're always looking for ways to make it better for people to fly,

and one of the things that we really want to do is

make it so it takes less time, make us go faster.

#AskIvo: Most Underestimated Global Issue? - Duration: 1:40.

Hi, I'm Ivo Daalder, the president of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs,

and this is Ask Ivo, a new series where you

get to ask me questions about global issues

that are of primary concern to you.

Today, Rudy Altergott asks this question:

"What global issues do you think may be among the most underestimated?"

One issue that is really not getting the attention that

it probably deserves is the growth in population,

particularly in Africa.

Between now and 2050, the population in Africa

is going to double, and 1 billion

of the people in 2050 are going to be under the age of 18.

That's both a challenge, and an opportunity.

Think about it: How many new consumers?

How many new producers of goods and services are going to emerge in Africa?

What we need to do between now and then is to pay

attention to what is happening there.

To make sure there's enough economic opportunity;

there's enough investment; there's enough productivity.

So that a growing population can eat,

can produce, can find a way to consume, and to become

part of a global structure in which all of us are better off.

If we don't get that right, we will have lots of people

who will be hungry, who won't have jobs,

and are going to look for other places to live.

That's why this is one of the most

underestimated challenges that we have.

Thanks for tuning in! Want to ask me a question?

Shoot me a tweet with #AskIvo.

Why Pregnancy Makes You Forgetful... but Helps Your Baby - Duration: 4:48.

[INTRO ♪]

How good is your memory?

Like, try to remember this list of words:

weather, snacks, cousin, cherry, floor, boats.

[silently mouths words]

Okay, can you repeat that back to me?

Whether you're generally good at memorizing things or not, if you're pregnant or recently had a baby, this task might be a little trickier.

That's because many pregnant people experience a foggy memory that can last for years after the pregnancy ends.

This phenomenon has a number of names: "momnesia," "mom brain," "baby brain," "pregnancy brain."

And memory loss only scratches the surface of what's going on.

Turns out, to prepare for a baby, pregnancy actually remodels the human brain.

Pregnancy brain is best known for causing memory loss, but studies show that it can also involve sleepiness or fatigue, dips in attention, and slower processing speeds.

Pinning down the symptoms has been a challenge, partly because pregnancy can vary so much between people.

For instance, those behavioral symptoms of pregnancy brain can start as early as the second trimester and last as long as two years after the baby's born.

Or they can start as late as the third trimester and end just a few days after childbirth.

Or there might be no symptoms at all!

These variations can make it hard to get consistent experimental results.

But a 2012 study compared 19 years of research and found that pregnancy brain is a real, measurable phenomenon that affects memory in a very specific way.

With other kinds of memory loss, like amnesia, people have a complete inability to form new memories.

But with pregnancy brain, it's harder to form certain types of memories.

Specifically, memories that require effortful processing—like when you're actively trying to memorize information.

So this includes memory tasks like free recall, where you remember a list of items or words, one at a time.

There's also delayed free recall, where you can remember information after some time or after a distraction.

Like whether you can remember the list from the beginning of this video—I know I can't!

None of them. Boats? Was boat one of them?

And then there's prospective memory, where you remember to do something in the future—

like deciding to make mashed potatoes for dinner, and then you remember to stop at the store on the way home from work.

It's unclear why these specific types of memory are affected,

but we have some ideas as to how memory loss can happen, because there are measurable changes in the brain.

During pregnancy, brain changes are ultimately driven by sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin.

These hormone levels rise to super high concentrations during pregnancy, and fluctuate a lot during the third trimester.

As this happens, the amount of some neurotransmitters also changes—

including a decrease in serotonin and dopamine, and an increase in norepinephrine.

That norepinephrine boost, which signals the fight-or-flight response, is also linked to an increased memory loss.

And all these chemical brain changes play a role in physical changes during pregnancy—

although scientists aren't entirely sure how everything's connected.

See, researchers have found that pregnancy causes significant changes in gray matter—

the regions where most neurons connect and talk to each other.

An increase in gray matter volume can mean that an area needs to make more connections,

while a decrease can mean there's some fine-tuning going on, or a loss of information processing.

But basically, changes in volume generally mean a shift in how the brain handles information.

A 2016 study published in Nature Neuroscience looked at the brains of 25 women who got pregnant for the first time, before and after they gave birth.

And they compared this MRI data to some scans of the brains of their male partners, and the brains of women and men who didn't become new parents as controls.

The researchers found that, during pregnancy, the cortical midline, hippocampus, and areas of the prefrontal and temporal cortices had a significant loss of gray matter.

And this decrease in volume had a correlation with memory loss.

But it was also linked to an increase in sensitivity to emotional cues from the baby and emotional attachment.

Specifically, there was a correlation between gray matter loss and higher marks on the Maternal Postnatal Attachment Scale—

a 19-point questionnaire used to measure how well a biological mother bonds with her child.

They also did a follow-up MRI scan on 11 of those new mothers, and found that those brain changes can last at least two years after childbirth.

And we're not sure how long it takes to get back to pre-pregnancy volumes of gray matter.

But overall, pregnancy brain seems to be an evolutionary thing that helps the baby survive—

kind of like how morning sickness is annoying but it can offer protection from toxins.

So meeting the demands of parenthood requires energy, time, patience, luck… and a little bit of brain remodeling.

Thanks for watching this episode of SciShow Psych!
