Self-portrait in watercolor - progress - Duration: 14:52.

Hello everyone and welcome on De Papier et de Rêves' channel

I'm Ursula an today i'll be painting with you a self-portrait

I've already made a video on the same subject no too long ago

But since i've made some progress so i think it's time to make another video !

So i can show you my progress and what I've learned

In order to ease my work a little i start this painting by taking a picture of myself

It's easier to work with something that doesn't move !

With this reference image, I'm sketching a lot

And you can have a look at some of them on the blog post

The link is in the description box below

I'm drawing at least two sketches

The first one on tone paper which allows me to identified the shadows and light with a white pencil

And then i draw another sketch at the size i want my painting to be

it'll be a guide for the drawing i'll make on watercolor paper

This second sketch is done on a very basic paper

so that i can erase correct and draw as much as i need

Once i'm satisfied with the sketch i can transfer it on my watercolor paper

with for example a light box which will allow me to re-draw the sketch on watercolor paper by transparency

or by using a window as a light box. It's working just as well !

Once i have my drawing on my watercolor paper i can start to paint !

I always start with a layer of skin tone color

And for that i'm using some yellow ochre mixed with a red

here i've started with permanent alizarine crimson

But i can also use winsor red which will gave a slightly warmer tone to the skin

And with this first layer i already identified the shadows areas by adding lavender with the wet in wet technique

This colors is a lot colder than the skin so it's perfect for shadows

And it's already time for the second layer !

The first layer is all about blocking the color and have a first idea of the painting

And now all my work is about giving life to this face and add volume

So i start by deepening the shadows while following the first marks of lavender

I'm using a skin tone color but deeper

It's a mix of yellow ochre, winsor red and sometimes a bit of Burnt sienna

And i also use all the "dirt" in my palette to tone this color down and create a shadow color

I'm adding color slowly, i'm building this image quite slowly

In order to be able to correct things if i need it

and avoid "big" mistakes

Maybe i could be bolder and add darker color right away

But it's not my way of doing things, i like to take my time to build the image

So that i can have a better control of what i'm doing

A tip when painting eyes in a face :

I add a first layer of color on the eyes

even if it darken a bit the eyes, the contrast will be less dominant and it will be more natural

So here i've added a tiny bit of Verona gold ochre on the eyes

a very light amount, just a veil so that it's not as white as the paper

When i'm adding colors to parts of the face

I do not try to have perfect gradient and perfect blending

I like to have some irregularities or sharper edges to gave more character to the painting

It adds texture and personnality

And with this idea of texture and character in mind

i've used warm colors in the face

and cooler colors for the rest of my body and some parts of the hair

In order to create contraste and focus the attention on the face more on everything else

While i'm building my painting slowly

Bare with me, this video is quite long just because it take me some times to paint it....

so while i paint i'll talk about how i improve myself at drawing and painting portrait

There's no secrets here, it's by practicing and exercising, it's as simple as that

I didn't believe in this before, but yes it's true !

don't be frustrated over a bad drawing, simply draw it again

And you'll progress necessarily

So i train a lot with my own face, so that nobody's feelings are hurt but mine :)

If i failed, well it's just my fault !

So i take picture of myself and draw them. It's easier as the picture won't move.

But my goal is to be able to draw a face directly

and see how i manage it

To make progress in drawing you just have to draw. The subject doesn't matter

and observing things before drawing it's the key to make progress

For a long time i was drawing without thinking

and now i take time to observe the picture before starting drawing

for a portrait for example i'll look how the eyes are placed

i'll identified the guidelines in the face

all this studies will help me in my drawing

This phase of observation is applicable to everything, not only portrait

it could be used for architectural drawing, still life

To be able to see the guidelines in a picture will definitely help you

For some subject in watercolor it's not needed to know how to draw

for flowers and nature for example

If you paint in a very expressive way, you don't need to know a lot about drawing

And it's why i've started watercolor with flowers

But for things like pets or portraits

I thinks it helps to know more about drawing

But careful ! A good drawing it's not a perfect drawing you can frame

It's just a drawing with good proportions. Just that.

Good proportions, shadows and lights.

And now i'll add a little bit of music for this part of the video

I keep building my image. I take my time and don't rush.

I think it's the best to work for me

And we'll see each other a bit later for the supplies list and a self critic !

It's no time to talk about supplies. So i've used an Escoda brush Aquario nº18

And a Raphaël brush 803 nº2

For the colors i've used Winsor red

Permanent alizarine crimson

Burnt Sienna

Neutral tint

Lavander

White gouache

Verona gold ochre

Ultramarine blue

And for the paper i've used Canson héritage rough

And now that i've paint most of my painting i just have to add some small details

I've found a trick to paint my glasse and i should have thought about it before

I just have to imagine my glasses in a rectangle shape

i just have to put the rectangle in the good perspective and paint the glasses in it

I've used that trick this time and it's working great : my glasses are almost perfect !

And now it's time for a bit of self criticism

Overall i find that this image is way more successful than the previous one

And i think it's the best portrait i've made so far

The pose is interesting

It's a bit harder to draw than a regular facing portrait but it's more interesting to look at

I love the colors in my hair with this lavender thrown here and there

and i love the contrast warm cool i've created

And for once this portrait is quite looking like me. way more than the other one !

i like the way certain details are just suggested and not totally paint

like my hand. I don't have any finger tips, but it doesn't bother me at all

i like also the texture in my hair

The negative point i see right away is the way i paint the eyes

i have almost eyes like in comics

i don't really know how to explain it, but there's something not totally natural in my eyes

It may be because i've used too much dark shade in this area

And it's lacking some blending and softness on the lids

And I'm not resenting him, thinking, I'm stuck with his way of living. It's made our relationship better," she says

Marriage isn't on the horizon yet for the two yet. "I'm not bringing up marriage like I was last year, you know, kinda pumping the break a little on that," Jacobs says, with a laugh

But is she worried Ravenel won't commit, considering that he has been married before and has children? "With any relationship, who knows where it's going to go," she says

"I'm certainly not going to waste my time with someone I don't see a future with

If we aren't in the same place in five years, I don't get this time back. And I want those things that he's had before, marriage, kids …" "Here's the way I look at it: I have all the time in the world to wait for the right person, but I don't have all the time in the world to waste on the wrong one," she says

Erika Chavolla, 24, was working at a Las Vegas McDonalds when she got into a dispute with the 24-year-old customer after she allegedly tried to fill up a water cup with free soda

and has posted screen grabs from the shocking video and links to DailyMail.com's original story

She has claimed on social media she was charged with battery over the incident

Chavolla said on Thursday that she has kept her job at McDonald's following the incident

She also showed off a scratch on her hand, from where she 'hit her in the teeth.''It's crazy, people think just 'cause you're working

' she said in a video posted on Thursday. 'She was trying to smack for a long time

'I wasn't even going to hit her. When there's a big girl coming towards her, she started freaking out

'Dont talk about my momma!' she added, laughing. Chavolla said she was stunned the video had become such a viral hit

'That s**t was crazy, it went everywhere,' she said, adding that she had also seen some of the negative comments about her size

'I seen all the mean stuff they posting.' McDonald's said it is investigating the incident and 'do not condone the behavior depicted in this video

' Dayag's video shows the two women arguing before the fight breaks out.While the audio is difficult to hear, the row appears to be over money

Self-portrait in watercolor - progress - Duration: 14:52.

Hello everyone and welcome on De Papier et de Rêves' channel

I'm Ursula an today i'll be painting with you a self-portrait

I've already made a video on the same subject no too long ago

But since i've made some progress so i think it's time to make another video !

So i can show you my progress and what I've learned

In order to ease my work a little i start this painting by taking a picture of myself

It's easier to work with something that doesn't move !

With this reference image, I'm sketching a lot

And you can have a look at some of them on the blog post

The link is in the description box below

I'm drawing at least two sketches

The first one on tone paper which allows me to identified the shadows and light with a white pencil

And then i draw another sketch at the size i want my painting to be

it'll be a guide for the drawing i'll make on watercolor paper

This second sketch is done on a very basic paper

so that i can erase correct and draw as much as i need

Once i'm satisfied with the sketch i can transfer it on my watercolor paper

with for example a light box which will allow me to re-draw the sketch on watercolor paper by transparency

or by using a window as a light box. It's working just as well !

Once i have my drawing on my watercolor paper i can start to paint !

I always start with a layer of skin tone color

And for that i'm using some yellow ochre mixed with a red

here i've started with permanent alizarine crimson

But i can also use winsor red which will gave a slightly warmer tone to the skin

And with this first layer i already identified the shadows areas by adding lavender with the wet in wet technique

This colors is a lot colder than the skin so it's perfect for shadows

And it's already time for the second layer !

The first layer is all about blocking the color and have a first idea of the painting

And now all my work is about giving life to this face and add volume

So i start by deepening the shadows while following the first marks of lavender

I'm using a skin tone color but deeper

It's a mix of yellow ochre, winsor red and sometimes a bit of Burnt sienna

And i also use all the "dirt" in my palette to tone this color down and create a shadow color

I'm adding color slowly, i'm building this image quite slowly

In order to be able to correct things if i need it

and avoid "big" mistakes

Maybe i could be bolder and add darker color right away

But it's not my way of doing things, i like to take my time to build the image

So that i can have a better control of what i'm doing

A tip when painting eyes in a face :

I add a first layer of color on the eyes

even if it darken a bit the eyes, the contrast will be less dominant and it will be more natural

So here i've added a tiny bit of Verona gold ochre on the eyes

a very light amount, just a veil so that it's not as white as the paper

When i'm adding colors to parts of the face

I do not try to have perfect gradient and perfect blending

I like to have some irregularities or sharper edges to gave more character to the painting

It adds texture and personnality

And with this idea of texture and character in mind

i've used warm colors in the face

and cooler colors for the rest of my body and some parts of the hair

In order to create contraste and focus the attention on the face more on everything else

While i'm building my painting slowly

Bare with me, this video is quite long just because it take me some times to paint it....

so while i paint i'll talk about how i improve myself at drawing and painting portrait

There's no secrets here, it's by practicing and exercising, it's as simple as that

I didn't believe in this before, but yes it's true !

don't be frustrated over a bad drawing, simply draw it again

And you'll progress necessarily

So i train a lot with my own face, so that nobody's feelings are hurt but mine :)

If i failed, well it's just my fault !

So i take picture of myself and draw them. It's easier as the picture won't move.

But my goal is to be able to draw a face directly

and see how i manage it

To make progress in drawing you just have to draw. The subject doesn't matter

and observing things before drawing it's the key to make progress

For a long time i was drawing without thinking

and now i take time to observe the picture before starting drawing

for a portrait for example i'll look how the eyes are placed

i'll identified the guidelines in the face

all this studies will help me in my drawing

This phase of observation is applicable to everything, not only portrait

it could be used for architectural drawing, still life

To be able to see the guidelines in a picture will definitely help you

For some subject in watercolor it's not needed to know how to draw

for flowers and nature for example

If you paint in a very expressive way, you don't need to know a lot about drawing

And it's why i've started watercolor with flowers

But for things like pets or portraits

I thinks it helps to know more about drawing

But careful ! A good drawing it's not a perfect drawing you can frame

It's just a drawing with good proportions. Just that.

Good proportions, shadows and lights.

And now i'll add a little bit of music for this part of the video

I keep building my image. I take my time and don't rush.

I think it's the best to work for me

And we'll see each other a bit later for the supplies list and a self critic !

It's no time to talk about supplies. So i've used an Escoda brush Aquario nº18

And a Raphaël brush 803 nº2

For the colors i've used Winsor red

Permanent alizarine crimson

Burnt Sienna

Neutral tint

Lavander

White gouache

Verona gold ochre

Ultramarine blue

And for the paper i've used Canson héritage rough

And now that i've paint most of my painting i just have to add some small details

I've found a trick to paint my glasse and i should have thought about it before

I just have to imagine my glasses in a rectangle shape

i just have to put the rectangle in the good perspective and paint the glasses in it

I've used that trick this time and it's working great : my glasses are almost perfect !

And now it's time for a bit of self criticism

Overall i find that this image is way more successful than the previous one

And i think it's the best portrait i've made so far

The pose is interesting

It's a bit harder to draw than a regular facing portrait but it's more interesting to look at

I love the colors in my hair with this lavender thrown here and there

and i love the contrast warm cool i've created

And for once this portrait is quite looking like me. way more than the other one !

i like the way certain details are just suggested and not totally paint

like my hand. I don't have any finger tips, but it doesn't bother me at all

i like also the texture in my hair

The negative point i see right away is the way i paint the eyes

i have almost eyes like in comics

i don't really know how to explain it, but there's something not totally natural in my eyes

It may be because i've used too much dark shade in this area

And it's lacking some blending and softness on the lids
