123 and I'm a testing...
It's begining to feel like I need some sleep....
*Bells Tolling*
Hi guys I'm Shelly, welcome back to my channel and 12 Gays of Christmas.
It's not even Christmas anymore, it's probably New Year's.
You're probably all had quite enough of my face.
But I am doing a series where I celebrate 12 wonderful, influential, just downright freaking amazing lgbtqia+ people.
So today, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, non-binary and for those of you who have yet to decide.
May I introduce to you Lily & Lana Wachowski.
I really hope I'm saying Wachowski right......because if I'm not
The effect that these women have had on my life, it's just downright marvelous.
Born in 1965 and 1967, the Wachowski's are American film, and TV producers.
writers, directors, creators, the reason I'm still sain, my heroes. All of those things basically.
They are transgender sisters
And they achieved great acclaim for their film series, that you may have heard of.
I don't know it's just, just a little, little film series called The Matrix
For me they changed my life when they created the series Sense8 in 2012.
Which was a groundbreaking series, dealing with homophobia, transphobia.
Having actual trans actors play the trans characters, and a group awareness.
And the most bloody., mind-blowingly brilliant series I've watched.
Born up in Chicago, they separated when they went to college.
Lana went to New York, and Lily went to Boston. But both dropped out before they graduated.
After they dropped out, they started working and writing for Marvel comics.
And in the mid-90s they branched out and started writing for films as well.
Their first solo film together was "Bound" in 1996. The film was very well received,
and was noted to be one of the first mainstream films, to feature a gay relationship.
Taking advantage of the big buzz around them, the Wachowski asked to direct their next film.
Which was something. something just small called The Matrix,
And in 1999 of course, they did just that. The film won 4 Academy Awards, and was a massive box-office success.
(and bloody brilliant)
While making The Matrix ,and it's then follow on two films, they were known as the Wachowski Brothers.
But Lana started transitioning from male to female in the early 2000s.
By December 2010 she had started to call herself Lana.
She's been very, very private about her transition, But when in October 2012 she received the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award,
and gave a beautiful, moving acceptance speech about her feelings over gender and confusion in her youth.
The sisters are usually very, very shy and guarded about news and media coverage.....
who can blame them?
Lily's transition came later in 2016, and she gave an interview, in which she said.
"I am one of the lucky ones, having the support of my family, and the means to afford the doctors."
"Has given me a chance to actually survive this process.Transgender people without support, means and privilege"
"Do not have this luxury, many do not survive...."
Although both of them have been very shy, and quiet about their transitions.
When they do speak about it, they speak about their privilege, and the fact that they have been able to survive this.
And so many people do not.....
Their TV series Sense8 means a lot to me. It is a celebration of humanity in every form.
Whatever it looks like, and a celebration of love again in every single form.
It breaks so many barriers, and is quite honestly just......
It got me through a really, really bad time and I loved it.
So I'm very, very grateful to Lily and Lana for one making that.
Making The Matrix, which just made my teen years bloody brilliant.
Making the film version of V for Vendetta, I can't even....
I know that Alan Moore didn't like it, and I understand why, I understand the issues with it. It's not exactly like the book.
But if you see them as two separate entities. The movie for V for Vendetta is also brilliant, and beautiful.
And is the flip and reason that got me into reading the book.
I just I cannot tell you how much I love The Wachowsk.
Not only for their work, but the love they bring to everything that they do.
And I am slightly in love with both of them, as you can probably tell.
So that is The Wachowskis, I will leave links down below to everything I talked about.
Such as The Matrix and Sense8 if you haven't seen it,
All of Sense8 is on Netflix. So if you get a chance to watch it. Please please do.
It is truly a beautiful, loving, just squishy piece of television. that I, that I just...yeah.
I hope you guys are good, and enjoying the new year.
I will see you guys tomorrow for more Gaynesss... Byeeeee
excuse me while I daydream about Sense8... just wanna squish them all
Has given me *BANG*
