Alien fossils could be hidden in ancient rocks

An ancient bed of rock near a dried-out Martian lake could contain alien fossils which prove

life once existed on the Red Planet.

Scientists said the iron-rich sediments are the likeliest place to find fossilised microbes

dating back three to four billion years.

A new study by the University of Edinburgh has pointed out a key location NASA's next

rover Mars 2020 should concentrate on when it arrives on the planet.

The next-generation robot will carry a sophisticated mobile geology lab designed to search for

signs of tiny dead Martians.

Primitive algae and bacteria are the most likely ancient inhabitants of the Red Planet

that was once covered in water.

Study leader Dr Sean McMahon, of the School of Physics and Astronomy, and colleagues found

rocks made of compacted mud or clay are the best bet.

This is because they are rich in iron and a mineral called silica, which helps preserve

fossils.

Mudstones rich in silica and iron-bearing clays formed in the ancient lakes and rivers

of Mars.

This was during the Noachian and Hesperian Periods of Martian history between three and

four billion years ago.

At that time the planet's surface was abundant in water, which could have supported life.

Microbial life could also have been preserved in silica or calcite-rich hot spring deposits

– although these have yet to be found on Mars – and possibly in salt rocks.

The 'field guide' published in the Journal of Geophysical Research will also assist a

similar planned mission by the European Space Agency.

Dr McMahon explained: 'There are many interesting rock and mineral outcrops on Mars where we

would like to search for fossils.

'But since we can't send rovers to all of them we have tried to prioritise the most

promising deposits based on the best available information.'

The researchers say the rocks are much better preserved than those of the same age on Earth.

Mars is not subject to plate tectonics – the movement of huge rocky slabs that form the

crust of some planets – which over time can destroy rocks and fossils inside them.

The analysis published in the Journal of Geophysical Research reviewed studies of fossils on Earth

and assessed the results of lab experiments replicating Martian conditions.

This identified the most promising places on the planet to explore for traces of ancient

life.

The findings could inform NASA's next mission to the Red Planet two years from now which

will focus on searching for evidence of past life.

The US space agency's Mars 2020 rover will collect rock samples to be returned to Earth

for analysis by a future mission.

A similar mission led by the European Space Agency is also planned in the near future.

The latest study of Mars rocks led by the University of Edinburgh could aid in the selection

of landing sites for both.

It could also help identify the best places to gather rock samples.

Most of us associate fossils on Earth with the hard remains of shellfish or even bones.

But any evolution on Mars most likely stopped with microbial organisms – and did not advance

to complex life forms.

Finding the right environmental conditions for preserving soft bodies is much more difficult.

Habitable conditions are thought to have existed on the Red Planet billions of years ago.

Scientists have suggested early Mars was cold and wet – not unlike Antarctica today.

Dissolved salts in Martian oceans would have kept water liquid even at sub zero temperatures.

Another theory proposes the planet was once wetter and warmer than previously thought

– similar to the sizzling Mojave Desert of Nevada.

Either way, enough liquid water should have been present for microbial life to have gained

a foothold.

And once that happened, life probably was pervasive in Martian water bodies early in

the planet's history.

The Defense Department wants small rockets that can launch satellites at a moment's notice

For decades, the Defense Department has relied on school bus-sized satellites launched high above the Earth for national security missions.

But those satellites can take years to build and launch.

And as nations gain the ability to shoot down or disable them - and electronics become smaller and more powerful - thats ramped up interest in developing the ability to launch tiny satellites quickly and with relatively little notice.

Thats the centerpiece of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agencys new launch challenge.

In late 2019, several small-satellite launch teams will be given a license from the Federal Aviation Administration to hoist payloads, with just 14 days notice, to specific orbits from a location they will only learn a month ahead of time.

A successful launch will win a team $2 million.

Two weeks later, theyll have to do it again with a new payload, orbit and launch site.

After competitors are ranked based on factors such as accuracy, the winner will get an additional $10 million.

Second- and third-place teams will also receive cash prizes.

For a really long time, weve enjoyed and benefited from space being a sanctuary, said Todd Master, program manager at DARPAs Tactical Technology Office, during a Wednesday information session in Los Angeles.

But that environment is changing..

The Defense Department has been interested in small satellites for many years.

But until recently, tiny spacecraft werent useful or cost-effective enough to make them worthwhile, said Doug Loverro, former deputy assistant secretary of Defense for space policy.

Technological improvements and commercial mass production of small satellites for broadband and communications constellations are piquing government interest once again, though.

In 2007, the Chinese military shot down one of its own satellites in a ground-based ballistic missile test, and had previously illuminated at least one U.S.

satellite with a laser on the ground.

In the 1980s, the U.S.

and Soviet Union conducted anti-satellite weapons tests, but stopped after they led to fields of space junk that threatened other satellites.

With small satellites, the Defense Department could quickly replenish satellites that have been destroyed by adversaries or set up a constellation for targeted reconnaissance efforts, Loverro said.

Last August, for instance, SpaceX launched a Kestrel Eye satellite for the U.S.

Army.

The dorm-fridge sized spacecraft is designed to launch quickly and provide real-time imaging information to troops on the ground.

Being able to launch from anywhere - whether thats a commercial spaceport, a U.S.

Air Force launch pad, or an aircraft runway - would allow for even more flexibility, Master said.

We dont want to have single points of failure, he said.

Launch-site flexibility is a key strategy for several emerging small-satellite launch firms, such as Seattle-based Stratolaunch.

The company is developing a plane with a wingspan of 385 feet that will launch satellites from a rocket attached to the planes belly.

To launch, Stratolaunch only needs a runway.

The company is aiming to conduct its first test flight in August, with commercial service beginning in 2020.

That current timeline wouldnt fit with DARPAs launch challenge, but the company plans to continue preparations for the competition anyway, said Mark Bitterman, director of customer engagement.

Another company whose commercial plans seem to be aligned with those of the DARPA challege is Tucson-based Vector, which last year test-launched from a country road in Georgia.

Vector has a mobile launch platform and station to blast tiny satellites to orbit from just about anywhere.

[DARPAs] seeing the same scenarios or requirements that a lot of us are seeing - the need for more responsive access, said John Garvey, president of launch services.

Theyre going to be able to leverage the fact that theres already a lot of momentum building..

Though traditionally known for building engines that power larger launch vehicles such as the space shuttle, manufacturer Aerojet Rocketdyne is also developing a family of engines geared toward the small-satellite launch market.

The company has already conducted hot fire tests of its Bantam engines, which are manufactured with 3D printing technology, said Tom Martin, senior manager of strategy and business development.

McCain pleaded guilty Friday to dereliction of duty when the destroyer collided with a commercial tanker, killing 10 sailors and injuring five in the Straits of Singapore last August.

Cmdr.

Alfredo Sanchez, who has served in the Navy for more than 20 years, testified during a special court-martial at the Washington Navy Yard, Stars and Stripes reported.

"I am ultimately responsible and stand accountable," Sanchez said.

"I will forever question my decisions that contributed to this tragic event.".

Per disciplinary proceedings, Sanchez agreed to retire from service, forfeit $6,000 in wages, and was issued a letter of reprimand.

Sanchez claimed responsibility for the deadly collision.

He said had failed to put a well-rested, well-trained crew in place to steer the destroyer into the Straits.

The former commander, who was immediately reassigned after the collision, initially faced negligent homicide charges, CBS News reported.

According to Sanchez, an 18-year-old undertrained helmsman had been navigating the destroyer, known as Big Bad John, leading up to the collision.

The Navy judge, Cmdr.

Charles Purnell, who presided over Friday's court-martial, singled out the failure to navigate the console as the "overarching failure.".

Sanchez acknowledged his failure to provide a more rigorous training.

More than a dozen relatives of the fallen crewmembers attended Friday's hearings, reading impact statements, and calling out the Navy for negligence, Stars and Stripes reported.

"I am haunted by it every day," said Karen Doyon, mother of Petty Officer 3rd Class Dustin Doyon, 26, of Connecticut.

"This is a tragedy that should have never happened.".
