[INTRO ♪]

You may know that animals like bats and dolphins

can use sound to 'see' their surroundings.

It's called echolocation, and it's kind of like sonar.

They make noises that travel around them and bounce off nearby objects.

Their brains are actually able to translate the reflections of those sounds

into a kind of three dimensional picture of their surroundings.

Which is a pretty neat trick.

And, as it turns out, it's one your brain can perform, too.

That's right—humans can echolocate, thanks to our big, flexible brains.

It's just that we usually don't, because most of us can rely on our vision.

Most of the people who echolocate are blind,

and it helps them navigate what they can't see.

By making clicking noises that last a few milliseconds

and then listening to the reflected sound waves,

they're able to obtain information about the size, shape and texture of objects

as well as their distance from them.

And that allows them to build a mental map of their surroundings—

detailed enough for some that they can go hiking or even ride a bicycle.

The clicks can vary in volume and number as needed,

and are higher in frequency than normal speech.

Other echolocating animals use higher frequency sounds, too,

probably because they provide greater resolution,

even though they don't travel as far.

And human echolocators emit their sonar-like sound

in a focused, 60-degree 'cone of perception'.

Practice makes the clicks faster and sharper

than the clucking sounds you might make,

so they're more directed and the returning sounds are less muddled.

These clicks only detail what's in front of the echolocator, though.

When researchers prevent head turning, human echolocators have trouble

understanding their surroundings and are more easily disoriented.

And that's different from bats, which have rotating ears

to allow them to hear sound reflections from all around.

Echolocation in dolphins is a whole other thing,

as they use specialized fat deposits to focus their sounds

and basically hear with their whole heads.

And, of course, they just echolocate naturally—we don't.

Some blind people do sort of stumble into echolocation.

But relatively few navigate this way, even though it can be taught.

We don't know exactly why that is,

but experts suspect it's because most don't realize it's an option.

Even people who aren't blind can learn to echolocate,

though it takes time and not everyone who's tried is great at it.

Those that are may actually rewire their brains to quote "see" sounds.

A 2011 study used functional magnetic resonance imaging—

a technique which monitors blood flow to see brain activity in real time—

to compare the brains of two people with normal vision

to two blind echolocators: one who was blind from infancy,

and one who lost their sight as a teenager.

In both blind subjects, parts of the brain normally used for visual processing

were active during echolocation.

That suggests that those parts of the brain can get rewired

to "visualize" the world using sound instead.

But the study was small and it didn't compare sighted echolocators to blind ones,

so we don't know if similar changes can occur for everyone who learns the skill.

And unfortunately, most of the few studies examining human echolocation

have been similarly tiny, so our understanding of it is very limited.

Still, the fact that any people can echolocate at all

shows just how adaptable our brains really are.

And you're watching SciShow so I bet you like to

teach your adaptable brain new things.

Real Madrid 1-3 Liverpool: Karius' nightmare denies Reds the Champions League - Duration: 5:02.

Real Madrid 1-3 Liverpool: Karius' nightmare denies Reds the Champions League

Two glaring errors from Loris Karius sent Real Madrid on their way to a 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday.

The long road to the Champions League final brought the Reds to Kyiv, and Jurgen Klopps side faced off against reigning champions Real Madrid.

Klopp pulled no surprises with his starting lineup, with Mohamed Salah leading the line on his last opportunity to surpass Ian Rushs record for the most goals in a single season for Liverpool.

That wasnt his focus, however, with a sixth European Cup the target for Klopps side in Ukraine, taking on a Real side unchanged from last seasons triumph over Juventus.

Presented with a difficult challenge in the Liga giants, the Reds ultimately crumbled.

Klopp names strongest side as Can returns to bench.

Salah forced off with shoulder injury after Ramos tussle.

Karius error hands Benzema opener, Mane cancels out straight after.

Bale wondergoal restores Real lead minutes after coming on.

Karius drops Bale shot behind the line to ensure defeat.

The Reds began on the front foot, with the Salah and Sadio Mane particularly dangerous with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson providing width on the overlap.

The tide did turn on the quarter-hour mark, however, with Cristiano Ronaldo blazing over from a tight angle following a Real break.

Liverpool continued to press and put a shaky Madrid back line under pressure, and both Roberto Firmino and Alexander-Arnold had fine opportunities blocked in quick succession.

Salah sparked major concerns from the dugout as he went down clutching his shoulder after a tangle with Sergio Ramos, and after attempting to play on he was forced off, in tears, on 30 minutes.

Real lost a player shortly after, too, with Dani Carvajals departure prompting Klopp to call his entire side over for an impromptu team talk.

The Spaniards had the ball in the back of the net after Karius parry fell into the path of Karim Benzema, but the Frenchman was flagged for offside to end the half at 0-0.

Real almost had the perfect start to the second half after Adam Lallanas bundled clearance fell into the path of Isco, but the midfielders lofted effort crashed back off the crossbar.

But they were handed a gift of an opener by an abysmal error from Karius soon after, with the Germans attempt at rolling the ball out deflecting off Benzemas trailing foot and in.

This could have shaken Liverpool into submission, but they grabbed their equaliser just four minutes later, as James Milners floated corner was headed into Manes path by Dejan Lovren to touch home.

Zidane made his first tactical change in the aftermath, introducing Gareth Bale in place of Isco to serve as a reminder of the wealth of quality at his disposal.

The Welshman rewarded his manager with one of the greatest goals in the history of the Champions League final, sending a sensational overhead kick into the top corner to make it 2-1.

Klopp made a late roll of the dice, sending on Emre Can in place of Milner, but seconds later another howler from Karius gave Bale his second and the winner for Real.

10 foods that fight breast cancer - Duration: 4:54.

10 foods that fight breast cancer.

Mushrooms.

A study published in Nutrition and Cancer in 2010 found that higher mushroom intake

is associated with a lower risk of breast cancer among women who are premenopausal.

Cremini, oyster and shiitake mushrooms, among others, contain antioxidants such as L-ergothioneine

that may confer cancer protection.

Broccoli sprouts.

These peppery sprouts are high in sulforaphane, an antioxidant that University of Michigan

scientists found may target and destroy cells that fuel tumour growth.

Pomegranates.

The crunchy seeds of a pomegranate (also referred to as arils) are well endowed with ellagic

acid, a potent antioxidant that may inhibit an enzyme that plays a role in breast cancer

development, according to U.S. scientists from the City of Hope's Beckman Research

Institute.

Pomegranates, a rich source of antioxidants, have also been linked to improved heart health.

You can get the same antioxidants from pure pomegranate juice, but drink only one cup

(250 mL) a day to keep sugar intake in check, or have half of a fruit.

Lentils.

A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2009 analyzed the

dietary patterns of more than 3,500 Asian-American women and found that a higher intake of legumes,

which include lentils and beans, was associated with lower breast cancer risk.

Though often overlooked, budget-friendly lentils are brimming with folate, fibre and a host

of other nutrients that may help keep breast cancer at bay.

Walnuts.

Preliminary data suggests that snacking on up to two ounces (60 g) of walnuts a day could

halt the development of breast cancer tumours.

Researchers from West Virginia's Marshall University School of Medicine surmise that

walnuts' omega-3s, antioxidants and phytosterols may help slow the growth of cancerous cells.

Blueberries.

Research suggests that pterostilbene, a phytonutrient in blueberries, can halt the growth of breast

cancer tumours by causing cancerous cells to self-destruct, a process called apoptosis.

And frozen wild blueberries are just as antioxidant- and nutrient-packed as fresh.

Spinach.

Premenopausal women with the highest average intakes of dietary folate (a good source is

spinach) had a 40 percent lower risk of breast cancer, according to a study in the American

Journal of Epidemiology in 2011.

The B vitamin is necessary for proper cell division, and stymies changes to DNA that

may lead to breast cancer.

Eggs.

Choline, an essential nutrient abundant in eggs, is associated with a 24 percent reduced

risk of breast cancer, according to a U.S. study involving more than 3,000 women.

This essential nutrient, found in the yolk, is necessary to ensure proper cell functioning.

The U.S. Institute of Medicine says women should aim for 425 milligrams per day; there

are 126 milligrams in a large egg.

Other sources of choline include fish, poultry, pork, beef, broccoli and wheat germ.

Salmon.

Salmon is one of the few foods to contain vitamin D in significant amounts.

Researchers at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital determined that increased intakes of the "sunshine

vitamin" were associated with a 24 percent reduction in the risk of developing breast

cancer.

Vitamin D may prevent cells from becoming cancerous.

Also, eating fresh or canned salmon provides docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a supercharged

omega-3 fat that may kill off breast cancer cells and help stop the spread of the disease

to other parts of the body.

Rye bread.

After reviewing the published research, Finnish scientists determined that consuming whole-grain

rye can help slash breast cancer risk.

A synergy between fibre, lignans, vitamins, minerals and the phytonutrient phytic acid

make rye bread a breast cancer fighter.

When buying, check the ingredient list to ensure that the first item is whole rye flour

and not wheat flour.

Poor People's Campaign Is The Angry Response To Inequality America Needs - Duration: 7:09.

Poor People's Campaign Is The Angry Response To Inequality America Needs

For the past half century, Americans have allowed the wealthy to get away with economic murder. Income inequality has risen to pre-Great Depression levels.

Compensation for CEOs skyrocketed while wages for the rest stagnated.

The wealthy received fat tax breaks even as workers got a pittance.

Just this month, America's high rollers bought dozens of paintings at prices tens of millions higher than anticipated during auctions at hoity-toity Christie's and Sotheby's.

And all of this has occurred with barely more than a peep of protest from the populace, no more than a few here today, gone tomorrow Occupy Wall Street sit-ins.

This month is not, however, business as usual.

Two Mondays ago, a bunch of dedicated rabble-rousers launched a new Poor People's Campaign.

Thousands demonstrated in Washington, D.C., including members of the union I lead, the United Steelworkers.

The group, led by the Rev.

William Barber II and the Rev.

Liz Theoharis, plans actions in 30 states over 40 days.

This past week, dozens of Poor People's Campaign activists were again arrested in Washington, D.C., as they demanded restoration of the Voting Rights Act.

The campaign is dedicated to the idea that "people should not live in or die from poverty in the richest nation ever to exist.

" Its revival could not be more urgent or timely.

The original Poor People's Campaign was the vision of Dr.

Martin Luther King, who wanted to expand the fight for civil rights to include a movement against the indignities of poverty across all racial lines.

King was assassinated before he formally launched the campaign, but his supporters took up the cause beginning with an encampment in Washington, D.C., in 1968.

Fifty years later, income inequality is worse.

The poverty rate declined from 1968 through 1975 then remained fairly steady since, though it is higher now than in 1975.

Deep poverty has increased.

According to the U.S.

Census, 43 million Americans live in poverty.

The Institute for Policy Studies, a progressive think tank, estimates that there are 140 million Americans who are either impoverished or so low-income that they are unable to routinely afford food, clothing and utilities.

King would be appalled.

The United Way tracks this latter group, which they refer to as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed).

These are Americans who work hard and are above the formal poverty line but who live paycheck to paycheck and experience a major financial crisis when a car breaks down or a child falls ill.

NPR found such a couple in Kansas City, Missouri.

Terrance Wise works for $10.25 an hour at McDonald's.

His fiancé gets $12 an hour as a home health care worker.

Still, Wise told the NPR reporter, he skips meals as the couple struggles to support their three daughters.

Full-time workers suffering from hunger can be explained by this: The portion of national income that goes to workers has declined.

It was 64.5 percent in 1973.

Now, it's 56.8 percent.

For the bottom half of all earners, their share of income declined from 20 percent in 1980 to 12 percent in 2014.

Meanwhile, the numbers are great for the richest.

The top 1 percent got 12 percent of income in 1980.

They took 20 percent in 2014.

For the richest of the rich, the top .001 percent, the boost is staggering.

Their incomes rose 636 percent in that same period.

This is reflected in the CEO-to-worker pay ratios that federal legislation required corporations to disclose beginning this year.

The worst so far is Mattel, where the CEO took home $31.3 million, or 4,987 times the corporation's median worker's pay.

That suggests that if 4,986 Mattel workers got together, they couldn't do as good a job as Margo Georgiadis did, even though toy sales continued to slump under her leadership, and the board of directors dumped her earlier this year.

STUDIES SHOW HOW ALTERNATIVE BIRTHING POSITIONS CAN REDUCE PAIN - Duration: 6:15.

STUDIES SHOW HOW ALTERNATIVE BIRTHING POSITIONS CAN REDUCE PAIN & MAKE ORGASM POSSIBLE

BY JOE MARTINO

When the topic of child birth comes up we might first think of new life and a beautiful

miracle, but after that we might think of the agonizing pain that is experienced by

most mothers who give birth to a child.

Could it be possible that the body was meant to experience birth in a different way?

First lets understand a bit more about a modern birth.

Advances in modern medicine are often believed to create a higher quality of life and said

to be a big step forward.

Is this true in every case though?

When we examine the current process of child birth, which modern medicine has put millions

of women through, some would say that many aspects of the process are quite unnatural.

jcanal J shape of birth canal.

One example; today in the US, 65.9% of vaginal births use the lithomy position during the

second stage of labor.

This is the typical position you would see a mother in when you imagine birth or watch

movies with a birth scene in it etc.

The mother lies on her back, legs pulled to either side while semi-sitting.

This position is also called the C-position as the body is resting on the tailbone and

curled in the shape of a C.[1] This position is believed to actually be one of the hardest

and most illogical positions due to the fact the birth canal is shaped like a J.

This means the mother is working against gravity and in the end pushing the baby UP the bottom

loop of the J to birth the child.

The convenience factor for the doctor is undeniable here.

There is easy and quick access to the birthing woman, but at a cost of detrimental effects

to the woman birthing.

[2] One effect being the fact that the pelvic region is reduced by 30% which forces the

woman to put direct pressure on her sacrum (tailbone).

This forces it to flex upward, taking it into a curved position that restricts the diameter

of the pelvic outlet.

This can inhibit the babys movement through the maternal pelvis.

Research has shown that effective positioning can speed labor and reduce discomfort by aligning

the baby properly.

This is achieved because alternate positions reduce area-specific pressure and unnecessary

muscular effort.

This actually allows the baby to be re-positioned during labor if need be.

One study demonstrated that mothers who changed positions frequently during labor and birth

saw a 50% reduction in time progressing from 3cm to 10cm dilatation.

Research also demonstrates that birthing in a non-supine position can lead to lower levels

of back pain, pain during pushing and fewer perineal tears, which also reduces the need

for suturing or surgical repair of the pelvic floor.[3]

Ineffective birth positions dont just affect the mother but also pose risks to the child

as well.

The lithotomy position can compress major blood vessels which interferes with circulation

and lowers maternal blood pressure, this can then lower fetal transcutaneous oxygen saturation

by as much as 91%.

[4] Further, this position can decrease fetal heart rate and contribute to other forms of

fetal distress, including cord compression, which may lead to continuous or internal fetal

monitoring, increased risk of shoulder dystocia/problems with fetal presentation or a prolonged pushing

phase.

Alternative Birth Positions So what are the alternatives to the standard

birthing positions?

The following is stated by Giving Birth Naturally[5] and outlines brief details about alternative

birthing positions.

For expecting mothers or planning mothers, I would suggest looking into alternative birthing

positions via the internet or some books.

Alternatively, you can look in your area for mid-wives who are open and experienced with

alternative practices.

Some hospitals cater to alternative births as well, but this is still a bit rare.

Hands and Knees Positions Quadruped childbirth positions, which include

the crawl and the full moon, are beneficial for back labor, turning a posterior

baby, and are often the best birth positions for birthing a large baby.

Sitting positions

Sitting positions combine the helpful force of gravity with relaxation.

A birth ball, rocking, or toilet sitting can be utilized to rest while gravity helps labor

progress.

Squatting Positions

Squatting positions are helpful in opening the pelvis to allow a baby to find the optimal

position for birth.

Squatting can be performed through use of a birth companion or a tool such as a squatting

bar.

Side-lying Positions

Lateral or Side-lying positions are beneficial for resting during a long labour, promoting

body-wide relaxation, and minimizing extra muscular effort.

They are best used in the later stages of labor since gravity isnt able to speed

the process.

Upright or Standing Positions

Upright positions for childbirth use gravity to the mothers advantage.

They help the baby drop into the pelvis and prevent pressure from being concentrated in

a particular spot.

They also allow the birth companions to apply other comfort measures easily.

They represent the most under-used birth positions.

Another notable birthing option is known as a water birth.

To visualize what this might look like, I have included a video below looking at various

case studies of water birthing.

It was true that these women were not only able to reduce pain involved with the birth

process but they were also able to have an orgasm during the process.

Whatever Happened To Guys Who Sang Who Let The Dogs Out? - Duration: 4:05.

Performed by the Bahamas-based group the Baha Men, the insanely catchy ear-worm "Who Let

the Dogs Out?"

echoed from every minor league baseball stadium and major league hockey arena in the year

2000, propelling the song into the top 10.

And yes, their name is really pronounced that way.

"Yo!

What's up, we're Baha Men!"

The song had every hint of "one hit wonder" all over it - and it was.

But since people are still wondering who, exactly, let those dogs out, here's a look

at whatever happened to the Baha Men.

"I'm glad to still be representing my country.

Um, I'm sure, all the members of Baha Men feel the same way too."

High Voltage

They may not have hit the big time in America until the year 2000, but the Baha Men actually

formed way back in 1977 under the name High Voltage.

They changed their name in 1991, landing an American record deal and making a appearance

in the 1994 Katherine Heigl movie My Father the Hero.

The group reportedly built a following in the Caribbean and Japan, and hopped around

multiple labels both before and after "Who Let the Dogs Out," releasing roughly a dozen

albums by 2018.

Sue let the dogs out?

According to TMZ, in 2007 the Baha Men filed a lawsuit against a company called Activate

Entertainment, alleging they were owed a half million dollars, since Activate failed to

provide for the Baha Men's recording costs.

The Baha Men ended up spending so much money out of their own accounts that the bank took

lead singer Isaiah Taylor's home; he reportedly spent his money on making music instead of

making his mortgage payments.

Weirdest music feud of all time

In February, 2001, "Who Let the Dogs Out?" won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording, beating

out "Natural Blues" by Moby.

That led to a backhanded diss by Moby, who said,

"I think it's quite a catchy little pop song, and my feeling is, if I'm going to lose an

award, I'd rather lose to a novelty act than a serious act.

It feels like less of a slight."

Considering the Baha Men had been around for over two decades at that point, calling them

a novelty act seemed pretty harsh.

Remember Moby?

Probably not.

They're kind of sick of those dogs

You probably got tired of "Who Let the Dogs Out?" years ago, so just imagine how the Baha

Men feel about performing it at every concert.

In 2015, Baha Men singer Dyson Knight told Vice that it's fine live, but rehearsing it

is a huge drag.

"I'm very tired of playing that song in rehearsal.

I mean, we've been playing it for almost as long as I've been alive.

But on stage, it's different.

The fans really give life to that song."

One issue with rehearsing the song is that the band members don't actually know the words.

Shockingly, "Who Let the Dogs Out?" is actually a cover of a tune by musician Anslem Douglas.

Former Baha Men member Marvin Prosper added the rap breakdown, though, and is the only

one who knows what the lyrics to the rap portion of the song actually are.

Knight told Vice that bandmate Leroy Butler, who currently performs the rap,

"[He] sings what he thinks it is, but I know that what he's singing doesn't make sense."

Return to greatness

The Baha Men made their American debut on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, so it's only

fitting that they made their triumphant return to the show - now called Live with Kelly and

Ryan - in 2018 to debut their first single in seven years, "Bumpa."

Watch out, world, they're back!

"Every time we perform 'Who Let the Dogs Out?' it's always the same kind of energy, people

just go nuts."

"People love it!"

"Even to this day."

We now know who let the dogs out, for real

So... who let the dogs out?

In 2016, the song's writer, Anslem Douglas, told Time to Break that his uncle inspired

the song.

His older relative would witness guys catcalling women on the street, and he'd say to Douglas,

appalled, "Who let the dogs out?"

He was using "dogs" in the sense that "men are dogs," asking rhetorically why these men

were allowed to harass women without consequence.

This is reflected in the lyric,

"The party was nice, the party was bumping, until the fellas start the name calling."

Later in the song, though, the women respond and shut the men down.

Pow!

Who would have guessed that in today's social climate, "Who Let the Dogs Out?" would be

more relevant than ever?
