Hi how are you?
Today is BSL Grammar
Please don't flick off, grammar is an important part of learning a language and your knowledge and understanding will improve.
The topic is Phonology.
What does it mean?
Phonology means the research or study of basic sign or spoken language units.
Language unit is a phoneme.
They don't have any meaning on their own.
The root word in phonology is "phon", which is Greek for sound.
Maybe your thinking why use a word for sound when sign language is quiet.
Previously by sign language linguistics it was known as cherology.
The root word "cher" means hands.
Sign language linguistics changed
Sign language is on the same level as a spoken language.
BSL is a real language, not just a language filled with just gestures and hand waving
It's a real language with a structure.
Phonemes can be split into parameters.
Altogether there are five but I will teach them in another video.
Thank you for watching me
Do you remember what phonology means?
Research or study in basic language units.
Thank you. Bye
