Unlike much of the rest of Hawaii,
East Island in French Frigate Shoals isn't much of a tourist hotspot.
Even locals weren't super familiar with this small, 4.5-hectare strip of sand 890 kilometres north-west of Honolulu.
That is, until it disappeared overnight.
The island was almost completely submerged underwater
when Hurricane Walaka hit the first week of October.
And Hawaiian scientists confirmed it had been washed away on October 23,
a disaster which could affect endangered wildlife for years to come.
Hurricane Walaka peaked as a Category 5 storm,
the highest on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale,
though it had somewhat weakened to a Category 3 storm by the time it hit the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
Still, anything in its path faced sustained winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour
and a storm surge a few meters high, since seawater is being pushed on shore by such strong winds.
Though East Island was the second largest in the area,
it maxed out at about 1.8 metres in elevation and its loose sands were held in place by vegetation.
It didn't stand a chance.
Thankfully, the seven researchers working at French Frigate Shoals were evacuated before the storm hit.
That doesn't mean that weren't any casualties though.
The cluster of small islands that comprise French Frigate Shoals are important breeding grounds for Hawaiian monk seals.
16 percent of the population lives there, and before the storm,
30 percent of seal pups were born on East Island specifically.
There are around 1400 Hawaiian monk seals left in the entire world
so a hit to one of their main breeding grounds could spell disaster for the species.
Conservation biologists say they won't know the effect of the storm on the population until they do surveys next year,
but they're staying optimistic.
It's likely many of the seals had migrated away from the island before Walaka hit.
But the seals weren't the only ones affected.
East Island is also the nesting ground for more than half of Hawaii's green sea turtles,
a species that's threatened with extinction.
The turtles, too, had moved on since their breeding season ended before the storm passed through,
but losing the island is a big deal
because lack of suitable nesting sites is one of the major reasons for the turtles' low numbers in the first place.
Conservationists hope they'll find other places to nest when they return.
And the island was frequented by seabirds, too, including blackfooted and Laysan albatrosses.
How the loss of land will affect them remains to be seen.
What shocked those familiar with the island isn't so much that it disappeared
but how quickly it happened.
Another island in the same archipelago, called Whale-Skate, eroded away back in the 1990s,
but that took several years.
Environmental scientists knew East island would eventually succumb to rising sea levels,
but thought its disappearance would take decades, not hours.
Although we can't blame climate change directly for the loss of East Island,
the increasing severity of storms is a direct consequence of global climate change according to
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
That's because warmer waters feed these storms.
What happened to East Island is a sobering reminder of just how vulnerable many habitats are,
particularly islands.
In other island related news, scientists have dispelled a commonly held belief when it comes to tortoise evolution on islands
in a paper published in August in the journal Cladistics.
Island gigantism is a theory that explains how small animals that live on islands become massive over time through evolution,
either because of the lack of predators or some other ecological quirk of island life.
And this appeared to explain the size of tortoises, as most of the giant species,
the ones which can be more than one meter across, are now found on the Galapagos islands.
But by completely reconstructing the family tree of the tortoise family, Testudinidae,
scientists have shown that massive tortoises likely evolved on the mainland and only later spread to nearby islands.
The researchers looked at a total of 72 groups of tortoises from all over the world,
both living and extinct, as well as outgroups,
groups of animals that aren't related to ones being investigated.
They used descriptions of the tortoises' physical features, bone fragments, fossils, and mitochondrial and nuclear DNA
to figure out how the groups were related to one another.
And their new evolutionary tree showed that giant tortoises popped up several times during Earth's history
in mainland Asia, Africa, Europe, North and South America,
before dispersing into nearby islands.
It's not certain why the bigger species ended up offshore,
but it could be that their size helped them survive the long swim and especially the lack of food on that journey.
Then, during the Pleistocene ice age, the ones on the mainland disappeared,
making it look like island gigantism was at play.
But it's not completely case closed for the tortoises.
Biologists still want to understand why giant tortoises evolved on the mainland,
and what wiped them out.
Climate change and predation from humans may have been to blame,
but they're still looking for evidence for those in the fossil record.
But, if there's one thing that's clear, it's that islands are very important,
and not just for vacationing.

So you have patients that come from all over the place.
When you travel to get breast augmentation surgery, how soon after that can you go home?
Well surgery is less than an hour, although patients need to count on about six hours
from the time they arrive at the hospital to the time they go home.
So for example, if you're scheduled first of the day at 7:30, the hospital wants you
there at 6, ready to go home at noon.
And if they want to wear a seat belt going home they can.
I have patients who come from upstate New York, Connecticut, Ohio, Cape May, from Philadelphia.
It's quite a distance, several hours, no problem.
I actually had a patient who flew from Philadelphia to Utah the next day.
Wow! for a breast augmentation and lift.
I don't recommend traveling the next day, but they did it - and no problem.
Okay, so we've covered the land and the air travel.
I doubt anyone's going to travel by boat, unless they live in Venice, of course.
Well the good news about that is if they did travel home by boat, and if they fell out,
then the implants might help them float.

And The Award For Strangest Business Goes to… - Duration: 11:38.
Here are a few of the strangest businesses all over the world!
9 - Neuticles Every year, hundreds of dogs escape their
homes following some female scent.
Only a percentage of those dogs return home, and their owners are left grieving.
This is why vets all over advise neutering dogs.
Unfortunately, many owners don't follow this advice, as many owners don't want to
see their dogs as eunuchs.
So Greg Miller, an entrepreneur formerly in the sweets business, came up with an amazing
idea: testicular implants for pets!
Yes, we're talking dog balls.
Neuticles are silicone implants for male dogs and other animals after neutering.
The point is that the dogs' appearance between his legs remains pretty much the same.
Miller says that dogs actually do care about their personal image and that they could get
traumatized after neutering!
To avoid this possible shock, Miller offers Neuticles for about $400 bucks.
To be honest, that's actually less expensive than we expected over here at Pablito's
Way!
The silicone is designed to prevent scar tissue from forming, and the balls come in 11 different
sizes in order to fit any dog!
On top of that, Neuticles also has created custom-made testicles for other animals.
Miller once made a $2800 pair for an elephant in a zoo!
Yeah, we're wondering how much silicone it took to make those! Miller says Neuticles
also have had some pretty famous clients over the years.
The Kardashians, for example, bought a pair for their dog Rocky a few years ago!
8 - Glitter Surprises In 2015, an Australian created what's probably
the pettiest way to get some revenge: glitter bombs.
Yep, for as low as $9.99 you could send an anonymous package full of glitter to someone
you disliked.
As an annoying tactic, it's pretty effective: glitter is undoubtedly the messiest craft
supply ever.
Sure, it's sparkly and pretty, but it gets just about anywhere and it's practically
impossible to remove entirely.
Imagine glitter forever stuck in the corners of your enemy's keyboard.
Aside from the glitter, you COULD also send a note included in the envelope, although
that may give your identity away.
In its first two weeks, the website became so popular its founder started begging people
to stop placing orders for glitter bombs.
He later sold his website for only $85,000 bucks.
Glitter Bombs were sent to all kinds of people, such as by political activists on their opponents.
Glitter bombs were also sent to reporters and other public personas.
Nowadays, website Ruindays.com has many other pranks other than just glitter, such as you're
a dirtbag, which is essentially a bag of dirt, and grow a pair, which is a package of well….you
guys know what it is!
7 - Falsa Boda The wedding might be fake, but the celebration
is very much real!
"Fake marriage" or "Falsa Boda" in Spanish, is the latest trend in Argentina.
Millennials are less and less prone to get married, and those that do get married, keep
pushing it off.
Many young people are simply starting to live together instead of doing the whole ceremony.
So, if you're in your thirties and want to party, where do you go?
This is the question the creators of Falsa Boda asked themselves.
They wanted a wedding reception, but where do they go if none of their friends were getting
married?
And that's how they came up with the Falsa Boda project!
Falsa Boda hires actresses and actors to play bride and groom, the parents of each side,
as well as best men and maids of honor.
A Falsa Boda usually goes like this: the guests arrive and the wedding starts.
They say their vows, and then a sudden plot twist happens for the sake of soap-opera-style
drama.
After a few laughs, and the real fun starts.
You guys know the usual: an open bar, a good DJ and, of course, the bride throwing the
bouquet.
Every invitation costs about $50, and Falsa Boda has been having a fake wedding every
month for around 5 years now!
6 - Paparazzi for Rent Not many people will deny that kids growing
up in the facebook and instagram era have grown up in a culture of self-promotion.
In a society where many people feel that their personal worth is equal to the number of likes
their pictures get, a lot of people want to be Instagram famous.
So having Paparazzi for rent as a business totally makes sense right?!
From getting your groceries and walking your dog, to fights in the pool with your significant
other for the moment, these paparazzi are here to make you feel like a celebrity for
a bit!
There are many paparazzi for rent businesses out there.
For example, the official website of Paparazzi in Denver states that their goal is to create
a scene and capture memories.
In fact, they advertise that their service will allow you to quote "release your inner-celeb"
and make anyone's dream of a red carpet a reality.
But that's not all.
For a small fee, their users can get their faces photoshopped onto the cover of a magazine
with a drama-fueled, eye-catcher headline.
This is in addition to their different packages that range from 400 bucks for half an hour
of a full paparazzi scene to custom packages that go in the thousands!
5 - Rent a boyfriend You guys ever been friendzoned before by a
girl that's just looking for emotional support?
Well, imagine doing it professionally!
Kushal Prakash, an Indian entrepreneur, developed an app in order to help out girls who've
run out of guys to friend zone!
Rent a BoyFriend is a service that will provide girls with a platonic relationship for a day.
Prakash has insisted several times that the app is only for platonic relationships.
There won't be any funny business between the two parties, and the dates arranged will
always happen in public places.
Rent a BoyFriend is an app that aims to diminish depression in India, as it provides company
and friendship.
Maybe having the company of a hot person next to someone for a few hours will make them
happier, we don't know the actual research behind this.
At the very least this app gives its users practice in social situations, an actual important
skill.
Apparently there are three categories on the Rent a BoyFriend app: celebrity boyfriends
at $40 dollars per hour, Model boyfriends at $27 dollars per hour, annnnnd the average
boyfriend, at $6 dollars per hour.
This app just launched in August of 2018, so we'll see how it pans out!
4 - The Ultimate Fan If you ever watched a movie called Austenland,
then you know what we're talking about.
A fandom is basically a subculture conformed by people who love the same thing as the other
members of the fandom.
Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Game of Thrones... the list goes on
and on.
For many people, being in a fandom gives them a sense of community.
This is why Fandoms often gather at conventions and themed-events like parties.
It's like having a huge family gathering where you can share your interests and discuss
your craziest theories.
So it's no wonder people are willing to spend their free time and money on a themed
vacation.
For many years now, New Zealand has welcomed a bunch of people who want to go to The Shire,
the movie set of The Lord of The Rings.
Now, companies are offering fandom-related tours and activities.
One of the most popular themed vacation is the Harry Potter themed tour: fans can visit
Hogwarts, or the castle the films were shot at, anyway.
They can visit Diagon Alley and buy all kinds of souvenirs: wands, cloaks, you name it.
If you're not so much into fantasy and rather have adventures, you can also book a day or
two in a Resident Evil-Zombie-infested area, where you'll be trained in survival skills
and then be left to your own devices to survive a horde of zombie-actors.
How many of you guys would be up to do something like this, or have actually done something
like this?!
Let us know in the comments!
3 - Favela Fun Whether you call it a barrio, a favela, a
ghetto, a shantytown, or whatever other words there are for impoverished areas, visiting
these places is nothing revolutionary or new.
Middle and upper-class people have been visiting poor areas since the 19th century.
In fact, at that time it was such a usual occurrence among Londoners that the Oxford
English Dictionary actually included the colloquial term "slumming" in its 1884 edition.
But what would drive a tourist to go to the slums instead of enjoying the good 'ol museum
or local restaurants?
Some slum tourists have explained that this kind of tourism gives them the opportunity
to really understand how other people live.
It's the curiosity in seeing how certain people have to live that drives some tourists
to go to "dangerous" areas.
Other tourists claim they do it for the thrill of going to a supposed dangerous area represents.
Being in an area knowing you can get out after just a few hours or even a couple of days
is, for some people, an experience worth having.
Slum-tour organizers say that many times, the main interest of the tourists is photography.
Slum photos have that kind of exotic feel to them that drives photographers to take
a trip or two to developing countries in the hopes of capturing some National-Geographic-worthy
photos.
2 - Bagel head Injections You know the times when you do a double take
at someone no matter who it is and where it happens?
That's basically exactly what this strange trend will do for anyone that gets a bagel
head injection.
They'll easily be getting stares from anyone anywhere.
So what exactly is the bagel head injection?
Essentially, it's a temporary swelling of the forehead that's created by injecting
saline into the forehead.
Then, whoever's doing the injection presses their thumb to the center of the swollen tissue,
leaving a very clear indentation.
This way a bagel shape is created.
And Voilá!
A Bagel head to impress all their friends!
So why on earth would anyone want to do this?
Saline body modifications only last between 6 to 24 hours after the procedure, so it's
not permanent.
This means a person who wants a wild look for a weekend can get it and can then still
go to work on Monday as if nothing happened.
The first bagel head injection was done in Canada back in 1999, and then it was introduced
to Japan in 2007, where it became sort of popular in the underground scene.
Bagel heads are pretty much that, a saline infusion in the forehead that creates a lump
as big as….yes….a bagel.
1 - Pirate Joes There are pirates in the twenty-first century,
but they don't all sail the seas!
Pirate Joe's was essentially a shop in Vancouver that illegally resells products of the extremely
popular American grocery chain Trader Joe's.
Owned by Michael Hallatt, Pirate Joe's started as an underground business at the back of
a bakery.
Pirate Joe's started simply out of the fact that Trader Joe's doesn't have any locations
in Canada.
So when residents found out Hallatt was reselling Trader Joe's goods, they bought them.
Sure, Hallatt resold the items at a higher price, because come on, who wants to have
to go all the way to another country just for some groceries, no matter how awesome
it is?!
Of course, when Trader Joe's found out what Hallatt was doing, they weren't happy.
They filed a lawsuit against Hallatt, although Hallatt decided to fight back.
A judge ruled that Hallatt couldn't be convicted under US trademark law because the infringements
weren't occurring in the country.
Unfortunately for Canadians, Hallatt decided to shut down the stores anyways because of
the mounting legal fees.
Here's what's next!

Eric Hung | Chief's Gala 2018 for Victim Services Toronto - Duration: 7:29.
Chief Commissioner, honoured guests, ladies and gentlemen... about a year and a half
ago my mom asked me if I would speak to all of you about something very hard for
me to talk about at first I hesitated but only for a moment because I
understood and have witnessed firsthand the importance of supporting victims of
crime I came to this gala last year as volunteer and realized that this was one
way of making something good come out of something horrible besides when you're
young you feel if you don't have a voice so I guess I should say thank you for
giving me the chance to share mine and speak for all the young people who like
me have been affected by crime
the truth is some of you are very intimidating not just because I'm 15
because I know you the power you have to make a difference if only idea ability
to improve the lives of someone else just by coming to an event like this on
January 1st 2008 when I was just six years old I got the worst news of my
life my mom came into my room she had been crying I was doing her best not to
she sounded edge of my bed and somehow I was trying to tell me that my older
sister had gone to heaven because she'd been attacked by someone with a knife
and I died I couldn't believe it and I didn't understand how could this be
I had just here a couple hours before she went to a friend's house I had so
many unanswered questions but I knew one thing life was different and nothing
would ever be the same my mom did her best to answer my
questions and to reassure me that I was safe and loved and nothing will change
that it had changed and when I went back to bed that night I was both very sad
and terrified I felt somehow as though I were free falling into a bottomless pit
for a long time my nights were full of nightmares but mom had promised to keep
me safe but she hadn't kept my sister safe so what's that actually mean when I
eventually asked her I knew somehow that I just made things worse and even harder
for her even though if she tried to hide it I knew she was heartbroken but I
didn't know what to do or say that's of our responsibility for six-year-olds as
the days went by I saw the struggle to normalize their lives I remember going
to school and seeing the other parents not speaking to my mom the usual morning
conversations as we learned of her kindergarten weren't happening even
though my mom tried to smile a lot naturally I felt really angry about that
I also felt different than other kids at school and found myself pulling back
into her shell my mom tried to explain to me that people weren't trying to be
mean to us they just didn't know what to say they were really scared that they
would say or do something and make it all worse and will make us cry or get
angry a few years later my mum was taking a
course from moving from post-traumatic stress into post-traumatic growth and
one of the things she had to do was write an e-book on something to do with
her experiences as a victim she decided to write a book of advice to friends and
families of people who are grieving she explained to people that they didn't
need to say anything they just needed to be there and gave losted what of advice
and how to help in practical ways that really made life easier for the victim
I've often been told that I'm a grown-up in a kid's body sometimes I want to
scream back and tell people that my childhood was told for me and I had to
grow up too fast but what good would it do as the months and then years went by
I had a better understanding of what had happened and the effort it took my
parents to support us in their young lives
I had a 12 year old and a two and a half year brother at the time my older
brother had some very dark times one day at school he had a psychotic breakdown
which terrified everyone he saw things that weren't real and thought that he
was going to die and physically acted them out without
being conscious of it his teacher didn't know what to do I needed to my mom she
also didn't hang with his friends anymore he said there were childish we
turned into it as a family and maybe that was a good thing a good thing
excited a good family one day when the front page of a newspaper had a picture
of my sister and the girl who killed her someone brought it to school apparently
their parents thought I might want to see it well I hadn't seen it on the bus
ride home everyone was asking my brother and I
that happened and for some reason they seem to think the whole thing was funny
and that really hurt I didn't want my mom to know because I felt like I needed
to protect her she was she was protecting us from the media and when
she found out they made her really angry things like this would happen too often
and each time it made to hurt worse just when things were starting to get better
it also brought back the fear it was bad for me but so much worse for my older
brother a few months ago three of my friends were robbed at knifepoint I
think it affected me worse than them I so easily could have been with them that
afternoon and I don't know how I would have reacted I thought about that a
thousand times thank goodness I could go home and talk to my parents I was so
lucky to be born to the family that I have they taught us not to be afraid to
ask for help and they knew where to go for that help and so we learned how to
look forward instead of living in the past
there are families who are less fortunate maybe there are marginalized
or lacking the skills and support to get through each day trauma takes over your
brain and your ability to thing properly victim services Toronto is a lifeline
but there are how we can get through each day and eventually those days turn
into months and then years they support families and then the parents have more
strength to help the kids if my parents had fallen apart or split up I don't
know how I'd be today
did you know that when a child is a victim of homicide many times those
parents end up living apart I know that parents put up I fall often these days
and most kids are fine as long as his head as well at the time I think would
have made my brothers and I feel really really helpless and scared they're our
kids I know we're lost they've had bad stuff happens and can't seem to get it
together I worry about them and them and I care about the impact their actions
have on others if they don't get the help they will just keep getting worse
but something will get hurt what if that hurts someone else I'd love you have the
power to make a difference you're so lucky
not only will others listen to you but they will take what you have to say
seriously I know everybody has their own problems you're so smart successful kind
and generous people and I know that because you're here please stretch
beyond their comfort level and give as much as you can to help kids like me the
thing is you never know when you or someone you might you know might need
help most my parents were police officers I never ever thought that their
daughter would be murdered I support my family my family received has given us
all the strength to pay it forward this is my first step on behalf of my sister
Stephanie and all the other victims thank you for allowing me to feel as if
I'm making a difference through you and Ty the mean to do it myself thank you
